[Q] Captivate Update; did anyone elses fail? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so i attempted to manually retrieve the update released today, can I not do that yet(as in MUST it be pushed to my phone first)? Now i have to effing wait sub-24hrs for it again Admittedly i couldnt wait...this fone is nice minus the few issues it has and that we are all aware of.
Ive never had a chance to see the update experience on an Android fone, therefore as far as im concerned it did what it was supposed to...only it failed. the "No update was installed..." screen appeared after my fone was restarted and unlocked. I didnt take out the SIM, fone is rooted, start up media scaning is (more or less) disabled with an app i use, and i have the free lagfix from the market; the One Click thingy lol. Any Ideas anyone?

mine found update downloaded then tried to install and said cannot install and when i got to resume updates it says "no firmware" i think i just need to flash to stock before trying update

mine keeps saying that it cannot connect to the att servers.

Aw id rather not...took alota time for me to find apps an methods to make this fone more usable smh

My phone is rooted and I have the same problem as ericos123. I think going back to stock would fix this problem. Sucks I have to redo everything.
What's the easiest way to go to stock? Anyone know?

will i lose all my media if i go back to stock?

Mine downloaded the file. I performed a backup prior to the update and started it. It came back and said "update failed" and when I attempted to resume it, it said no firmware. I checked the baseband and it said JH7 which is the version being pushed.
So I assume it actually passed but it failed on something minor as the phone operates just fine.
So far, that also seems to be the consensus that rooted/modified users will get errors. I modified my framework apk to put a better batter icon, and it is still there. Maybe it couldn't overwrite it...
Check your baseband and see if its already updated. (and if you couldn't get your update, use the date-forward trick (change the date forward 24hrs)).

Ok, I've tried the update 4 times and I can't get it to take. I've used Odin to go back to stock JF6 (checked re-partition). I also did the master clear thing! I compared my phone to a co-worker who has a completely stock Captivate and they appear to be identical!
The patch downloads fine, however when it restarts and begins to apply the patch, it gets to 50% and then says "Updates fail". It boots back up and says that the update was not successful!
Any ideas??

Check your "About Phone" screen. Mine failed as well, but when I checked mine this is what was different:
Baseband version: I897UCJH7
Kernel version: 2.6.29 | [email protected]sep-11 #2
I was stock + root prior to trying the update. Here is hoping this is a fix for the GPS, I will try and report back.

I don't think you do, but I'm not sure. That said, idont know how to bak to stock myself...guess it time for more XDA searching lol

my failed at 100%, rooted and got rid of the att apps. maybe the update updates some att apps?

Yea my has "7" at the end too but I can remeber if it said it befor the update r not...

I have two stock non-rooted phones and they both performed the update successfully.

Mine's rooted, and a few stock ATT apps removed. Update successful, took about 10mins total.
Yet to check for any changes/improvements.

I'm in the same boat, can anyone verify this if this means the update was done successfully?

So what's the status on those of you who have already applied the leaked JH7 through Cognition or another way? Are you all going back to stock to then get this new update? Is it possible to apply the GPS fixes to my current rom/kernal or should I do Odin and then apply it? It's not that big of a deal to do everything individually (voodoo, black bar, superuser) if I have to without Cognition. I really want the GPS fixed.

I manually moved the date up two days (Sept 24th) on my phone and checked for update. It finally started to download the OTA update. It failed after 50% installation and rebooted by itself. My phone was rooted with lag fix and removed some AT&T software. I'm wondering the reason it failed because it is trying to install QuickOffice and update other AT&T software. But I already moved some of the AT&T software and already installed QuickOffice through Android Market.

[Q] Stop Android from updating to 2.2

Is there a way to stop my Droid from updating OTA to FroYo? I have flashed my Droid over to Cricket and have Bugless Beast v0.4 installed, and now since the 2.2 OTA update has been released I get a constant notification that the update is available. The only options I get are to install now or to install later, but what if I don't want to install it all and just get rid of the pesky notification that keeps popping up every so often after I press install later. I already have 2.2 on my system with Bugless Beast so I'm not really missing out on anything. I don't want to update and have to reroot, reinstall Bugless Beast, and reflash my Droid to Cricket again. I'm happy where my system is at
If you have a custom recovery, then as soon as you reboot into the installation your phone thinks that you've accepted, but the custom recovery blocks the installation and you stay on BB.
What do you mean by reboot into installation?
I've booted into clockwork recovery and then restarted the phone, but nothing seemed to change. Is that what you meant to do?
Flash SPRecovery. Then select "install now". It will send a notification that it has been installed on your phone to the servers that send out the OTA but SPRecovery will block the installation of it onto your phone, thus stopping the notifications of an update and keeping you on BB v.04 w/ Cricket. You can flash back to CW Recovery if you want to afterwards.
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
Im also running BB.04 and got the OTA notification today. Glad I found this thread because I was starting to get worried. I clicked 'install now', rebooted and so far no notification and I am still on BB.04. Woot!
Thank you for this!
Running BB 0.4. I saw the verizon 2.2 Froyo upgrade this morning, and for a second I was psyched verizon finally pushed it out... then I was a little worried about what was going to happen to mine since it was rooted and running a 2.2 Rom I was already happy with. Just like this thread says, I clicked install, and the phone rebooted right back up to my BB 0.4 without any issues.
I'd hate to say I'm a leech, but you guys have so much information here, and I cannot stop reading lol. I commend everyone one of you Devs for all the work you do!
Thank you again,
-Dano
Yup, it worked perfectly! Thank you!
Interesting. I was able to block it the first time but it popped up again. Anyone know why? Maybe there is another update to the 2.2 OTA update?
I was having the same issue with the ota update until I came across this:
http://www.peteralfonso.com/2010/08/how-to-stop-ota-notifications-on.html#more
it says it is for Buggles rom but I am using a different rom and it worked just fine
I had received this notification about four times before it recognized that I'm updated without rebooting the phone for it to be blocked. Nothing else had to be done except for saying yes.
stephen730 said:
whatchoo mean able to block it? You mean you clicked install later? Or you let it run and it goes away?
If you let it run/fail it will just come back again a day later, a week later, next time you reboot, next time you come out of screen off, etc... Its done it to me and it sucks cause it won't go away number 1, and number 2, i hate to keep rebooting to fail and possibly missing calls/texts... especially when you first wake up and the message is there like a nagscreen or advert.

I clicked install now and my recovery image blocks the installation when rebooted. It shows the Android guy with the exclamtion point but it doesnt finish the install. Reboot then im back to the way I was. Im running BBv.4 btw. I havent got another prompt yet.

[Q] New update fails

Hopefully you guys know there is a software fix out from at&t and samsung that fixes gps problems and etc...
goes without saying you can't just straight update if you're rooted. That's where i'm stuck.
Before i touched anything, it would get to 50% and reboot, says the update was not applied.
Then I tried "unrooting" even though it said it was unrooted, and apps requiring SU backed this up saying my phone was unrooted.
Then during the update, it stops even sooner at "preparing".
So... how do we get around this without doing the master clear with odin3???
I DON'T want to lose all my data. I'm too lazy.
Mine said failed at 100%. I def got the jh7 update though. My phone was unable to reboot into recovery using the three button method. Now I can. My phone was rooted with stock rom.
Mine is rooted with the Voodoo fix and it failed during the update (I was at work so don't know at what step during the update).
Will have to do the voodoo-lag unfix - restore back to factory defaults and try it again..
Unless of course someone pops out a tweaked ROM before then!
check out this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=789546 so we can get everyone with this issue together in one thread

captivate jh7 upgrade

Got the firmware today.. when it loaded it ran the entire progress bar and later said that it failed.. however in the settings it say jh7 and additional attempts to update says no updates available. Also.. after the update the superuser app is still installed and appears that root is still there. Any thoughts?

You have to unroot before you can do a ota upgrade. Rooting is suppose to block ota upgrades because a ota upgrade would remove superuser.
I read somewhere that people have had to flash back to complete original. I've rooted and removed AT&T crapware. Also, being new to the Android platform I need some guidance on how to go back to factory orig. I've heard of odin.. but base on my limited research I haven't seen if it is available to mac. I am familiar with Unix/Linux.. they are my primary OS'.. but messing with a phone OS is just a different animal altogether.
I had to redo the phone but the update never showed up.. So what I did was just flash the update from samfirmware and it is working even though I have to redo everything...

My phone is rooted and I updated without issue.
Well i just tred to update mine this morning, i finally got past the communication errors. The download went fine, but when it was installing it went from 0 to 50% percent in about a second and then said update failed and rebooted.
I'm on the stock JF6 rom, however i used odin to get there.
My Sim card and sd were left in, however my sd is blank
And i don't know what any other info i can post to be helpful
2.1 update
just did the update with one click root loaded.went though with no problems phone is faster with less lag.also i can still use as wi fi hot spot. new Quikoffice,Media hub,Mobile Video and you tube. well this may mean no 2.2?
I also did the ota update with root installed, allowed 3rd apps, with wireless tethering, and it went through fine for me but I still have poor gps, did not seem to do anything for the gps except removed the option to enter lbs test mode. Anyone know how to get to the lbs test mode after update?
Samsung Mini-Kies Updater
If anyone is having troubles with Mini Kies (I had the problem where the application crashed, using Win 7 x64), I'd recommend using the regular Samsung Kies application. I was unable to do the JH7 update even after restoring to complete stock with Odin (50% update failed error). This was easy, and now I am fully in JH7, and so far the GPS lock is much, much faster.

Software update from ATT

So I just got a notification from ATT saying that there is a software update available. Has anyone else gotten this and installed it? Is it jelly bean or a minor update? I haven't tried it myself because I am rooted.

Can someone detail this update?
*Edit* Called AT&T the Update was released October 9th it an 13mb update so yea Minor the girl
on the phone was talking to fast for me to listen what it offers
Got it last night. Android version did not change. Couldn't tell for sure if any other numbers updated. It wouldn't kill AT&T to send out an e-mail or text message telling us what the update was for.
got the same thing i have no idea what is the update
Update has my phone stuck in a darn boot loop..any idea what it is?
Sorry bludiamond.
Since my phone is rooted, I did not want to install this update. It's quite upsetting that AT&T forces the update unconditionally.
Anyway, I had let the download to complete, but did not let it to install. The update did prompt me, whether I want it to install now, or later. I had opted for later.
Then, after some Googling, I had deleted the download (from /sdcard/Download), and had un-installed the following services: com.htc.demoflopackageinstaller and com.smithmicro.dm.
Then, I've rebooted the phone. Afterwards, the phone still had a notification, that there's an update ready to be installed. When, selecting the notification, updater did realize that the downloaded file is gone, and had prompted me whether or not I'd like to download the update again, on which, I had responded no. The notification is gone, and AT&T did not prompt me to download and install the update again, at least not yet.
My phone seems to be OK.
I was hoping for a new Radio/RIL. That's not what this is...
New Kernel & Recovery. If you are rooted and on a custom rom Do Not run the update. I'm sure the developer of the rom you are on will work to add anything useful to future updates.
The dates on these files is 7/27/12 so it took At$t over to months to test & release.
To delete it look in /cache/fota/OTAPkg.zip
Once gone you shouldn't be bothered by it anymore.
Have anyone successfuly downloaded and installed it?
What's new? Bluetooth bugs fixes? Usable Voice Dialer? Better battery life?
Sense 4.0?
Please comment.

Think the majority of users on here are rooted and running custom roms so they wouldnt' be installing this.
I forgot I was unlocked and rooted. Now I am really stuck. How do I get out of the dead Android loop?
I googled the update, and found this on the ATT Support website.
Beginning on October 9, 2012, AT&T and HTC have released an additional software update for the HTC Vivid that will be available via firmware over-the-air (FOTA). This 13MB software package updates the firmware version to 3.26.502.56_R23 and improves sensor performance.
NOTE: Customers must have a data SOC in order to obtain any FOTA updates. Customers who have a data opt-out SOC are not able to receive FOTA updates.

I had the looping issue too. I cleared the cache once and rebooted. Received a message that there was a problem with the update and to wait for the next update. Phone seems to be okay since.
I'm unlocked s/on..no custom rom..it was so early, I must have hit the wrong button, so I'm stuck in the loop and can't seem to get into recovery either..ugh
I'm stock - not rooted. I did do the download without any problems, although you do have to manually reboot after the update.
It supposedly improves the sensor. Not sure what that means, but that's what the ATT website says. Other than it changing my default ringtone, I don't see any difference.
Could not get it out of the loop. Took it to the service center and neither could they..they ended up replacing it under warranty..thank goodness. Said that another lady came in with the same issue as well.
AT&T Upgrade to Nowhere
I'm running stock on the HTC Vivid and got this upgrade pushed out by AT&T. This is the second AT&T upgrade I've done on this phone (the first was to ICS not long after I got the phone).
I ran the update yesterday, which force rebooted my phone and I watched as the upgrade downloaded and installed, then came back up.
NOTHING has changed. I don't know what AT&T supposedly upgraded, but it's certainly nothing noticeable.
I didn't even get the "3.26.502.56_R23" software designation that the AT&T help article says I was supposed to see.
It was literally an upgrade to nowhere. Not sure why I wasted time off the grid and battery power on it.
As usual-- AT&T fail.
At least no harm was done.
I was rooted, stock ROM, and got the notification yesterday. I postponed as much as I could but it finally wouldn't let me anymore and I let it try to update.
Of course, went into a boot loop. I did eventually get the boot looping to stop by reflashing the wxc recovery image and CWM-root, but then my wifi wouldn't work. I suspected some difference in the kernel version or some other borking of the update.
Long story short, I had to re-lock, go back to stock, and re-unlock and root again. Then spend the time (ongoing) to get my environment back. Thank goodness for Titanium backup pro and Dropbox. LOL.
Wish I could bill AT&T for the 18 hours I've spent. And if they push it to me again, I'll be irritated.

4.4.4 OTA update for ATT pushing out, larger mysterious update didn't install (5?)

I unexpectedly got a nice surprise this morning with a hefty 400mb update via ATT Update Server OTA. It was 4.4.4, not 5 as hoped but at least it's something.
4.4.4
Baseband: G900AUCU2A01
Kernal: 3.4.0-3116194
Build: KTu84P.G900AUCU2AOA1
The strange thing is after the update, I got an notice that it updated successfully, it said a software update was available again. Downloaded it, and it was almost 500MB but then said there wasn't room to install it. I cleared a bunch of photos and file and then the cache and when I went back, continue update was grayed out. I'm thinking I managed to delete it when I cleared the cache. Wonder if that was Lollipop. Did the date trick and checked update again and said up to date. So who knows, but there was nothing in the FOTA folder.
I called ATT and they were not even aware that it 4.4.4 was being pushed out OTA yet. Said that only 4.4.2 was the most recent, and of course knew nothing about when 5 would be out.
Not worried about it til I can have root on it.
Mine said software is up to date and i'm on 4.4.2. Can someone grab and post update file please so i can sideload by ADB..
I am on 4.4.2
when i checked update it showed getting update, but i was on Data so cancelled it.
Will try in Wifi at home and see how this goes...
Here is the update from ATT website about this update...

Really buggy update and a visual POS!
- The Gallery app has text overflowing if the album has long characters.
- The Emergency Icon was poorly implemented you can see theres an ugly bar next to it and the AT&T logo if you have a passcode.
- When you press the recently opened apps icon the background turns a solid blue instead of showing your background makes it look like Windows 95 or something.
- App drawer lags every time you scroll a page.
So i had to Odin back to 4.4.2 nc build and then Ota to ng then 2nd Ota to this 4.4.4. Whew

I was rooted on NG originally, but the OTA failed to installed. I Odin flashed to nc build (my phone shipped with NG) so I could install the OTA, but it failed. I redownloaded and tried 3 times. I even tried sideloading the NG update on SD card, but it fails every time too.
Did you have to do anything special to get NG to install? I can't for the life of me get it to work. Or were you originally on NC and in which case I'm screwed?

nope i was on NG - it was rooted like you but unrooting still left the custom logo at boot time. So I downloaded to stock NC - you must not flash the bootloader (BL) file in the 4 files in this rar at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2714455 - use the google drive download. You can't downgrade the bootloader. But as long as you don't flash the BL file in odin, flash the other 3 (AP, etc) and u should be good. (if you do flash the BL, no harm, odin will fail, pull battery and restart download mode remove BL from odin).
from there let NC load up and then OTA x 2 (advance date if needed) to the 4.4.4 build.

Hmm... that's exactly what I did, but the OTA update failed. I tried several times... wiped between installs, and it stopped at 32% or whatever it is.
I just tried installing these in odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s5/general/g900ang3stockmodem-tar-md5-t2868904
now I'm trying the OTA again... crossing my fingers!
Edit: woohoo! It's installing the OTA update after I installed the ANG3 stock modem and recovery!!! Thanks for your help!
Great! Anyone notice brightness automatic controls seem a little dimmer? Seems snappier but I just clean installed
