Hello All,
I've just started looking into rooting my lovely new Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000, and i've stumbled upon a slight problem, being that its an Austrlian phone, (also known as continental) i remember having this problem with my HTC Dream a few years back, and i was only able to root it with continental software or it would brick, which it almost did.
I'm just asking whether anyone knows of a rooting guide, prefferably on XDA that works for 'continental' Galaxy S's, or does the whole thing not matter and i'm just being a big girl by not trying any old root.
BTW. i have looked and havent found anything that says the root will only work for continental Galaxy's. This probbaly means that all firmware works with this phone, better safe than sorry.
Thanks,
Ashley.
Hi Ashley,
I'm in Australia too, and I got my SGS from optus, I rooted it with one click lagfix, it's very safe , you can get it from the market
thx
Easy Root for Galaxy S i9000
Where do you get the "OneClick Lagfix Root" from (which "Market") and is it easy to accomplish. Everthing I have read on here scares me ****less! I cant afford to brick my phone, but it is so damn slow and freezes/crashes regularly. It has been updated to Froyo, but no better! I dont see any improvements to the phone at all!! Is there a fix that a non-technical user can actually use? Most of the language used in these forums is just jargon to most people. Why use Android at all if this the problems you get. If Rooting the phone is supposed to be so easy, why isn't there an app or a software download readily available?
Please Help.
use SuperOneClick v1.7 to root and unroot ur device.. its the safe and easy

Hey raycee63, Did you just root the device and update? or did you install a custom rom?
I just finished installing a custom rom on my GF's galaxy and its running alot smoother now. There seem to be alot of issues with the stock firmware.
Once you have rooted the device you can install "Rom Manager" by ClockworkMod in the normal app market (free or paid your choice) and then select
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery.
The next step is the tricky part sometimes.
You can find a list of custom roms in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=886000
Download the one of your choice and place onto your internal SD card.
I would suggest All In One Edition by Developer: Spike_M
I have just used that and its running very well.
Remember this will completely wipe your phone so ensure all contacts are backed up to gmail and you can use a number of apps to backup your SMS's, APNs, and Apps.
I use:
SMS Backup & Restore
APN Backup & Restore
AppAsst
Once backed up Open Clockwork recovery mod and hit Reboot into recovery.
Now I think its best to wipe first before installing the rom.
Using the volume keys to move up and down and the back arrow as enter
select Wipe data /factory reset and wipe cache partition
next select install zip from sdcard. Browse to where u copied the file and select it.
it should say completed.
Then go back and hit reboot system now.
The phone will take a long time to startup as it needs to format the cache i believe.
But once it has it should be like a new android.
Then go on the market and reinstall appasst or find the file in the files app and reinstall it then restore all your apps ect.
If the phone hangs and the boot logo and doesnt start after a long long time. (more than 10 mins) may need to wipe the cache and data again.
U can do this by holding the power button to shutdown and when u start back up enter the "recovery mode" (Hold Volume up + Home + Power) and selecting apply update.zip and you should see the same options as before just wipe and try again.
Still Fails? Try a different rom or redownloading it. you can copy it to your phone by selecting mount in the recovery mode and plugging in the usb cable.
I had no end of trouble figuring it out but I hope this makes sense.
As per normal please dont blame me if you do happen to brick your phone. I have tried this myself and it has worked perfectly.
Good Luck
So what is the issue if my phone does not boot? It's chilling at the Galaxy S screen then shuts off. I have to remove/replace the battery to get it to boot up again.
Put it into download mode and reinstall the Odin one click restore...
Will do, thank you.
This seems to be an issue with disabling the Voodoo lagfix. I'm working on it but it's a bit difficult as there's nothing to see... There's a tar version of 1.4.1 that you can flash with Odin, btw.

I had Ext4 lag fix. I had to uninstall it to put on OTA. Then the Cappy wouldn't boot after the removal of lag fix. Had to Odin it. I think I'm gonna stay away from lag fixes. I just don't know about the android system well enough to mess with system files. It's really nice for developers to improve the phone though.
Hello,
I've got a new captivate something like a week ago.
I got it with preception 10.4 rom and speed mod kernel and android 2.2.1.
The phone works very fast and I'm satisfied with the speed but the battery is draining very fast.
for example, yesterday I charged the battery and went to a friend, I pictured some photos, filmed a short video (1 minute), played a little game and after 5 hours the battery was 70%, I went to sleep and after something like 9-10 hours when I woke up the battery was 27%! Without using the phone!!
Is it normal?
And for my other questions:
1. How can I know if I have the lagfix enabled?
2. Is it good to upgrade to the official version of AT&T 2.2? Some people told that this is faster.
3. If I will change the rom should I be worried of the sim free unlock (that it will lock again)?
4. What are the best rom and kernel that will be fast and will have battery saving?
Thanks!

I'm not too familiar with the Cognition ROM's. But I might take a look at WiFi, or you may have a app thats running in the background causing the drain. Do you have wifi or gps on all the time?
1. It was probably enabled by default. A really easy way is open File Explorer, go to your "Voodoo" folder, open it if there is a folder named "disable-lagfix", then your lagfix is not enabled. If you want to enable it, delete the "disable-lagfix" folder and reboot
2. I wouldn't waste my time with stock 2.2. Most all of the modded ROM's here are going to be better
3. I'm not familiar with that issue, never had it happen for myself
4. That is a hard question to answer, most of the Captivate devices are going to respond to a ROM/Kernel, a little bit differently. For example, my device LOVES Supernova JS5, where as your device might not run quite right on it. So my advice is to try it, if it works for you, use it. Read the threads, find a ROM that you think has really great support, so if you run into issues you can find help. Zelendel has posted in the Q&A section, threads for some of the more popular ROM's for the newer folks who get stuck
Voltage control App/RC6 and 1400 Kernel
I am currently running RC6 on my captivate with the 1300 kernel. I have no issues using and adjusting voltage control app with this set up. However, as soon as I try SGS kernel flasher and flash 1344 kernel or the 1400 kernel voltage control app begins to force close. I have removed and added back in with the same result. I am very happy with my set up, but would like to benchmark the other two. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you very much!
I enabled the lag fix, not seeing a big improvement.
I will try to find a new rom because I can't continue with this battery.. draining like water!
1. Another questions, does a rom comes with a kernel or should I need to flash kernel too?
2. What mode does the phone need to be when I connecting it to computer to flash a rom?
3. What are this JXX all about?
4.If I am flashin to stock rom, how will it know to flash to 2.2 or it doesn't matter because the new rom is 2.2?
5. Does flashing to stock rom unroot my phone?
6. Do I need to disable lagfix before flashing new rom? If so how do I do it? just copying the disable-lagfix file back to the Voodo folder?
lol a lot a questions, but I'm sure you'll forgive me

Ok, here we go.
1. All of the ROM's come with modems and kernels
2. I would be flashing back to stock 2.1 and Master Clear before flashing a new ROM. After that is done, to flash to a custom ROM, you will be in Recovery Mode
3. The J** is, for lack of a better term, the build number. The farther down the alphabet you go the newer the release. The newest at this time is JS5.
4. When you flash to stock you'll use Odin which has stock 2.1 JF6 built in. You can get it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?0w2y31maz8mdom4 If you're going to a custom ROM, I wouldnt mess with the new Stock 2.2
5. Yes
6. I would. All you need to do(for Voodoo lagfix) is, open a File Explorer, go to your Voodoo folder and create a folder named disable-lagfix then reboot the phone
There is no reason to flash back to stock and master clear. It used to be a bigger deal but now they are all compatable. The only thing you might want to do is clear the dalvik cache in the advanced cmw menu in the recovery mode. I havent done any of this for about a month and after flashing over 10 roms im still seeing no problems.

Thank you, you're great.
About the mode I meant USB debugging or something like this.
How do I do this master clear?
About odin and all of this, when I will flash my rom I will use the captivate toolbox (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944418) so I think it will do it automatically. I want to do everything safe and I think this program is a great way to start.
Especially after I tried to backup my current rom using rom manager and it got me to recovery mode but the ok key button wasn't working, so I had to pull out the battery :S

I successfully installed serendipity rom with the help of kangi!
But I have a problem, when I want to enter CWM with rom manager I press "Reboot into Recovery" in the rom manager app and it reboots my phone and get me to the phone recovery (3e) and says that something was faild and I can't use the ok button because it doesn't working.
I have to pull out my battery and then turn the phone on again and then it gets me to CWM.
What is the problem? there's another way?
I don't think that pulling the battery like this is very healthy for my phone.

The captivate toolbox is an awsome program.
When you use it to flash a rom, it will push clockwork recovery onto the phone for you. just follow the instructions and you will be fine.
A few notes on the toolbox and Odin3,
you must have the samsung drivers installed on your computer, they take forever to install on my computer.
generally speaking, you will not need to use the 3button unless you flash someting like darky's extreme, and his instructions are very clear.
turn on debugging mode in settings/applications/development.
plug in the phone
click "flash to stock," use the one click and follow in the instructions.
let the phone fully reboot and go into sync mode, a minute later, the blue odin box will turn green and say "PASS."
Unplug the phone, turn debugging mode on again
plug in the phone, and when odin sees the phone (window will turn yellow) hit "master clear."
let the phone fully reboot again into sync mode
turn debugging mode on again
click root phone and follow the directions
If you want to open odin3, just click flash to stock with your phone unplugged and click which ever odin3 you want and it will open. This is very usefull if you want to use odin3 without the tool box.
After you flash the ROM, reboot in recovery and if you dig arround in the menus, you should see stuff about lagfix options and lagfix tweaks. make sure lagfix is enabled, if your not sure enable it and reboot into recovery. many roms install with lagfix not enabled, so yuo should always do this. once it changes the file system and reboots into recovery, go into tweaks and enable everything that has an (R) next to it. reboot and enjoy

lol pulling the battery isnt the greatest thing to do.. but it shouldn't hurt it as long as its at one of those type of screens. If you were to pull it say.. doing a restore - that would be a fatal no-no.
Um.. if you have ROM MANAGER on your phone already it should have an "update.zip" that has all of the recovery advanced options in it.
Especially with Serendipity if you want to get into Recovery just hit the power button and click on Recovery - it will put you into the CWM recovery mode.

With a custom ROM installed, most of the newer ones have a Extended power menu, press and hold the power button for a couple of seconds, let it go and it'll give the option for Recovery. Personally, after stock JF6, I dont have any need for ROM Manager anymore
Try to enter Recovery that way first, don't use ROM Manager, if that doesn't work, I would put the "update.zip" back on your phone, and try to re-install it again. Something may have hosed on you
Got it. Thanks everybody

ISSUE: Voltage Control app FC's on start in Paragon RC6 1400 kernel.
This is related to having previously installed the Paragon 1300 kernel (and the VC app was working there). I forgot to delete the OC/UV settings before flashing the 1400 kernel
FIXED: These steps may not ALL be necessary, but this is what I did, and it fixed the issue for me:
Uninstall Voltage Control app with TiBu
Delete /etc/init.d/S_volt_scheduler and /etc/init.d/S90scheduler (use Root Explorer or adb shell su)
Boot to CWM recovery
Delete cache and Dalvik cache
Re-flash Paragon RC6 1400 kernel ONLY (not the ROM) - paragon6-1400-100hz-0215-2245-cwm.zip
BTW I'm running Serendipity 6.2 ROM, and it's a beeautiful ride with this kernel

This was supposed to be a pm to espyel developer of paragon rom. Sorry if I misspelled name.
I can't seem to pm or post on developer section cause im new here and threes a 10 post rule. I have searched for the last month and im just stuck. I need help! I have only my captivate I internet with a barely usable weak signal so its been very frustrating. I have learned a lot from this great forum but I can't get my problem fixed still.
Here is my copy of the pm which never goes thru for some weird reason. I just need some guidance as I have probably not done this right all the way thru.
First of all I want to thank you for all your hard work on this rom. I love it! I am in need of some help and I have been researching for the past 3 weeks with no answers. Im pretty new to all this stuff but anyways let me tell you my status as of now. I rooted my phone and was able to install the 5.1 paragon rom which I like a lot. I lost some apps due to tb not able to restore my quickoffice and other important apps. My problem is I can't seem to flash back to anything other than the paragon 5.1 install date. I have the rom manager flashed to recover other dates like when the phone was still stock version but nothing else works. It always fails! I tried installing the update rc6 and something is very wrong. After installed and rebooted phone stays on for nearly 5 minutes and reboots randomly also I try restoring apps and it doesn't work. Seems very laggy and I know from all the great reviews on the rc6 that its just me having this issue. Please help!!! What can I do from here to update my 5.1? My desktop just got fixed and I have no I internet yet other than my captivate which has real weak signals at my new house. I don't use the odin program you mention because of the desktop being down for over a month. Im limited to internet providers at the new house and I need to get it going soon. My captivate has been my internet portal for the last month and it sucks compared to my desktop not to mention poor signals here. I would like to tether my captivate to my desktop as well but have no clue on how to get it to work. I don't flash back to stock like you mention in your steps but I do delete data and cache and all. Like I said I love the work that you do and would love to donate soon. What can I do to enjoy the updates and full capabilities of this rom? Please help! Thanks in advance!
I would power phone off, hold volume up and down and power. When at&t comes up let go
Wipe cache partition
Go back
Advanced clockwork
Wipe davlik cache
Go back
Install zip from sd
Choose zip
Rc6
Flash
When done go back
Wipe both cache again
Factory reset
boot
See if that fixes it. Did you have oc settings saved at boot?
Odin would be nice though

I recommend using odin to flash back to stock and also do a master clear. After this you need to re-root, install rom manager, flash clockwork, reboot to recovery, and install rc6 from scratch. This method is recommended to avoid common issues. Good choice with paragon. Killer rom.

^^^ Thanks for the replies guys.
Good news is I got my desktop internet up temporarily using a wireless card and got a weak open signal.
Bad news is I am still lost! What Odin do I need and where can I download it from?
I tried searching and only found the odin3 but I'm hesitant to proceed with anything without getting some more info. What version do I need for my windows computer? 32 or 64 bit?
I have the SDK Manager on my desktop as well but still have no clue what to do with it or how to use it. I'm still looking into that.
Also, how can I get my phone to tether my desktop and get internet signal?
Is RC6 a full rom or just an update?
If I flash back to stock and reinstall RC6 would I need RC5.1 first then the RC6 update?

Thanks! I will pm you before I use the wrong odin and brick the phone.
Rc6 should have a full rom version, I do not recall if there was a no wipe. Make sure you have the full wipe rom if flashing from stock

if you already have paragon rc 6 just simply do factory reset back-up your apps with the included titanium back-up, wipe dalvik cache and wipe battery stats from cwm recovery menu then reboot your phone. I doubt if you have tweak the over clocking/ voltage apps and not resetting it back to factory default when updating to rc 6 this may cause some issues. if you can open your oc/voltage control app in the menu simply remove boot setting, reset all the voltage slider to 0 and limit overclocking to 1000 mhz then apply, after that do tibu, factory reset, wipe dalvik cache and battery stats then reboot.

You know I did mean to mention this!!!
I did adjust my voltage and saved them. I remember running a quad test result of 1454. I never did remove the boot though! Maybe that's all that it was not able to flash to stock and rc6 not functioning right!!!
Thanks I'll give this a try.
So I used odin3 to flash back to stock 2.1 eclair.
Now I can't root my phone anymore!
Usb drivers are not picking up the device and I can't use desktop to transfer root files. I tried downloading some root zips to my phone but it doesn't except the downloads. I can't flash using clockwork because I am not rooted now.
I can't get adb to work even though I follow each step by step of the sdk download.
I'm in a worst situation now than before. Any help would be appreciated!!!

paragon rc 6 is already pre rooted you don't need to root your phone when installing paragon rc 6 just download the full room and the update zip and paste/copy it into your internal sd card. try installing samsung kies mini in your computer it will also install the corresponding driver. once your computer running odin recognizes your phone do a master clear. to do this just enable debugging mode but don't turn off your phone your phone will then reboot itself after the process. install the update zip first with cwm you have to do it twice. first the 3 button combo recovery it is a blue one the default in eclair then install update zip http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=490798&d=1295155828 once you have install it it will be back again to recovery mode and now a green color now install again the full rom of paragon rc6 http://xda.deanhatescoffee.com/roms/paragon-rc6-full.zip then wait for the phone to reboot.
I just wanted to give a BIG thanks to oxlong27.
You saved me big time from bricking my phone and loosing all data or worst.
They need a counter next to the thanks button! Haha!
I appreciate you going out the way and guiding me step by step over the phone, email, and text. I love my phone more than ever now!!! Everything works great and I'm lovin' the di11ligaf rom. Thanks a bunch bro!!! I didn't think this forum had members like you but I was wrong. Thanks to everybody else who replied with suggestions too!
Well guys....i think this problem stems from me prematurely removing the usb cord. I Understand that. But here is the other couple of predicaments. lol Ok i'm on ICS Stunna 4.3 ......well after something went wrong i'm unable to "repair" my internal storage. Everything still works smooth....but i can't add things to my internal card. Every time i hook up to the computer it says it needs to scan and fix the card.Well the problem is starts to fix it.....but never does....progress bar never finishes. Tried this on 3 different computers. Nothing. So try to install a different rom....i have some on my internal and external. Always aborts in cmw....never finishes. So on top of all this Stunna has started acting odd. Likely read errors.....but problem is i can't switch roms! lol I have tried everything. I was wondering should i format both cards? But if i do that how can i back everything up if i can't access my card? Any help would be appreciated guys. Hoping i don't have to Odin back to stock.
Cliffs- Internal storage won't repair on any computer-Can't install anything in CMW because of it
I have the exact same problem now, as you do. CWM can't install any .zip files, I can't flash Abyss kernel, so it's just stuck in that end.
I installed ICS Stunner 4.5 coming from GB with full wipe. This happened to me after I tried to copy some files over to external SD Card and it failed, seemed like the phone froze (SOD), so I figured flashing another modem would do the trick (read it in ICS Stunner thread's 1st post). Tried to transfer the file over a cable, but same thing happened. After rebooting I just grabbed it from dropbox and installed the modem successfully. I went ahead to try and fix the mounting problem, so I plug in the cable and it offers me to scan and fix both partitions (internal and external). External card finishes successfully, but not the internal one. And after that I'm in the same situation as OP.
Any ideas anyone?
Enable usb debugging(setting-appl-development)
Connect to pc
Select to copy file to fr computer from notification
You will find separate drive letter for int n ext card
Rt click on int sd card letter n format(you can backup imp data to pc b4 this)
Hope it shud b fixed

Gonna try it now. Have lots of pictures to backup first tho
EDIT: Same thing happens as with scan and fix procedure. It starts and just sits there, nothing happens. When I try to stop "USB Storage in use" it just shows the spinner and hangs in there. Only holding the power button helps solve this. My guess is something in the internal SD card partition is broken... just can't say what or how to fix it.

Same problem^^^^ Not sure what to do about all this
Short story:
Formatting didn't work.
Long story:
Okay, so following the idea to format the internal sd card's partition, I achieved it not through Windows format dialog, but through the half-broken CWM. Both my SD Cards were formated (internal and external) in the process. So since I used the external one for backing up important info I had to use [email protected] UNDELETE to get it back (after booting to ICS). In the process the native SD Card mount service seemed like broken, I had to perform a few hard resets. Hangs seemed to occur whenever I tried writing to one of the cards. I downloaded multi-mount SD card app from Play Store and transfered AbyssKernel's .zip and now when I try to install it from CWM it says
Installing: /sdcard/AbyssNotekernel42RedTouchOriginalLogo.zip

And that's it... so basically back to the start. Any more ideas?
Please help if you have any ideas on what might work. Us 2 guys are in trouble...lol
I don't know if this will help or not but give it a try.
Enter into the download mode and flash any stock firmware using PC Odin. This way you don't need to access any of the cards. After flashing stock ROM, try fixing the internal SD again and if it still doesn't fix, send in your note to Samsung for repairs.
Sounds too simple to be working though but worth a shot.

Well for now the phone works, but it's stuck on ICS Stunner. I was thinking to use PC Odin or Mobile ODIN, but what if it doesn't work because the partition is corrupted in some way (as it is now, because CWM can't flash anything).
I'd like to hear more insight before I go the odin-way

I'm downloading an old GB rom myself..
While I am, I can share a thought: I feel that ICS is not yet ready.. at least not for me. Feels nice and fast but buggy USB transfers is a big no-go for me. Also after trying AOSP derived ROM, I decided to wait for a good Samsung edition ICS because all the little tweaks add a good feeling to the experience, I tend to miss them on AOSP or AOKP or w/e

Oooh thanks! Didn't know this. So now I'm pretty confident because if flashing conventionally fails I'll just repartition and get rid of all the partition errors. What do you know, I feel like I learned something new today
SOB! Just did the whole Odin to stock thing and i am stuck in a bootloop! lol
I think my problem is used a .tar instead of .pit.....where can i get the .pit?
Ye same happened to me. Reboot to recovery (volume up + home + power) and do a data wipe/factory reset. After that it boots. Rooted and flashed CWM just fine after that, copying my old GB nandroid backup to SD card as I write

Glad it helped!
Too bad for me, since I had recovered the latest nandroid with undelete software (cus external sd was accidentally formatted) and now I'm getting a MD5 mismatch Guess I might as well start fresh now, since the last good backup is like 2 months old... Another lesson for me.. always keep your nandroids safe
So everything fine now??

Yeah. After quite a time of failed attempts we succeeded. ODIN > Stock GB ROM > ROOT + CMW > Anything you like. No re-partitioning was needed in the process
i have same problem but more complicated. iam on stock GB and its happened after flash bad kernel
the case in detail's :
i flashed wrong kernel on my device previously and now when iam trying to flash another kernel even use ODIN or CWM everything going well and completed but when check i found the old kernel still. i tried many times with same results and no error .
- system can read/write/mount the internal memory but the new pasted files deleted after restart. external card behave normal and i can preform flash using files pasted on it.
- in CWM wipe/format/flash operations running well but no effect on device even restarted to CWM only.
- device has yellow triangle. is it effected?
- the devil kernel stacked in machine is 2.6.35.7-gb4846d2 [email protected] #2 and the build no. is jpkj4
system running normal but cannot keep any changes i do if restarted.
-system rooted and no problem with root
-can access adb
- ODIN behave same CWM, operation work but no change.
can anyone help me guys?
i did repartition the memory useing PIT for note butno change also
thank you all in advance
