[Q] Galaxy S slow while installing apps ? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
When i download any app from the market, it finishs downloading smothly, but after that when the application is being installed, it teribbly slows down and nearly the phone is not responding until the app finish installing, it takes around 5 - 7 seconds.
I have a stock 2.1 JPJG8 rooted with Autokiller, is any one experincing the same? will a lagfix resolve it?
I'm thinking about applying a lagfix (voodoo) but the phone is generally fast for me and wants to wait for froyo, but if it will fix this, then i might apply it sooner.
Thanks.

it is a known issue
installing the lag fix might kill your internal SD
just a warning.
if you still have the invoice and can send the phone in for warranty, then you are good to install the lag fix
if you don't have the invoice for the warranty, then it might be problematic when it fails

in all cases you better have your warranty, but the lag fix won't kill your sd all that quick. original fs is slow only cause it's crap.
the lagfix won't fix slowly installing apps as well btw. it will still freeze when installing.

just search the forum, there are lots of prove, look for SD, internal SD, bricked, can't mount, can't boot, etc...
the majority of those are after installing a lag fix or a rom with lag fix like voodoo, and i'm currently submitting two phones to warranty from fellow XDA members because of that
and you don't need to believe me, but time will tell for anyone using the lag fixes

Thanks for the info.
Is it a known issue for the galaxy s, or for all android phones and versions?
Is there any timeframe for a fix ?
Thanks

I was just talking with a friend about this problem this morning. He had never seen this problem with his Nexus 1. I don't believe that this is an android problem just a sgs problem.
I wonder if this is some how related to the black screen issue. It seems that something has priority over the ui thread or has exclusive access to a resource required by the ui.

In my case, when I first used the phone, apps downloaded from market installed almost instantaneously. However, now apps install noticeably slower. However, I assume me having 9 pages of apps now might be the culprit...

the lag fix was made only for the SGS
yes, it's only a SGS problem, it seems to affect more the units with 16 GB internal SD

it's not the memory wearing out, it's errors in applying the fixes/mix firmwares/etc (or bugs in the fixes themselves sometimes)
even if memory would wear out faster, its not like if lifetime would be reduced to a couple of minutes (or even days of constant write)
as i said making any such modification you should have the warranty or take your own risks (theres always a disclaimer !) but it's not the memory wearing out

To the OP: That's your big problem with the device? Man... please...
Who cares if it takes 5 seconds to install an app, that's something you do the first day only. You never saw a program in Windows taking 15 minutes to install? I have a SLC SSD on my laptop and that reduces the disk access times a lot, but if a program takes a few minutes to install, so be it. I'm not installing 100 programs every day.
The same with the SGS. Inputting the details and configuring the options of my e-mail, twitter, facebook, kindle, etc accounts takes much more time than installing the apps.

[Q] So what do the lag fixes do?

Hey all,
Sorry if i sound dumb, but i can't quite figure out what these lag fixes do, or if i should try to put one on my device. I've tried to read the threads pertaining to the lag fixes but all the ext2 ext4 stuff confuses me haha. In my mind i picture it fixing the delay on the 4 buttons (menu, home, back, search).
If anyone could break it down for me i'd very much appreciate it
Thanks
One of things it does is makes those button 2-3x faster. Also i think it makes the general experience of the phone a lot more smoother from what i have noticed.

Ahh i guess i shoulda followed my gut, or just tired it haha. Thanks for the heads up, i think i'm gonna try it right now
Ok so i just ran the one click lag fix. I can't say i notice a difference in pressing the bottom buttons but to make myself feel better i downloaded that quadrant thing, ran it and it gave me a score of 2264. Now i have no idea what that proves but at least i don't feel bad now about applying the lag fix lol
Sometimes the phone seems to lag or hesitate at times if you press a button, open an application, etc. These are the "lags" the fixes are addressing. It's literally taking the phone longer than it could to read and write files on the device.
The lag fixes move your system files into a different file system (sort of like a virtual drive on PC's, all done in software.) Samsung uses a file system called rfs, which is running very slowly on these phones. Lag fixes use different file systems from Linux, such as ext2 or ext4, which perform better.
The risk in using a lag fix (albeit small) is that your data might become corrupted if you don't shut down your phone properly; for example, say if you pulled the battery while the phone is running.
I hope that helps you understand what they do better.

This was a perfect explanation. I saw someone who was wanting to make a new guide, i suggest you send that exact post to him. If i can understand it anyone can haha.
This does raise some questions now though,
1. I know it can now be corrupted but is this on the internal or external sd card? 2. Once corrupt what exactly is stored in this location (if i remember right i had to chose a size to apply this lag fix to)?
3. Is this a corruption like i can just reflash a rom and everything is back to stock, or is that piece completely broken?
Thanks again =)

Starting with Optimus X2 needs, hints, must haves, possibilities

Hi there,
im new on the Optimus X2 and i am trying to figure out what you can do withit.
i got several questions and hope you can tell and or help me withit.
My first action on using Android was to put version 2.2.2 i think, on my HD2 Leo using clockwork and NAND. Had no experience to do stuff like that before, but great forum here helped me trough it.
so...
1.
I´ve heard about problems with the battery, that lifetime is not displayed right.
I think i may have something like that too. sometimes battery run out after only about 5-9 hours (using web and/or games)of course i am using it in that time but that seems to be a little bit too fast. In standby sometime it is turning off after 12-18 hours, of course using it with calls and sms sometimes.
2.
There normally should be an update or something, i thought the X2 is beeing delivered with android 2.3.? or will be updated soon after selling?
Are there any official information?
3.
I thought X2 will be out with 512mb ram?
when i start 3-4 apps and close them down, sometimes the advanced task killer shows before closing programs only 50-60 mb ram (is it ram?), after closing goes back up to about 180.
its not that nice when you want to take pictures or record video in F-HD is not working properly. have to close down everything before.
4.
What is this Cm7? i read alot about it, but i still dont know exactly what it is?
I`ve allready rooted my phone, whats a good app for deinstalling systemstuff and preinstalled games and apps?
5.
What are the 10 most useful and must have apps/programs to configure, style, and use youre phone?
6.
Are you guys using different roms? are there faster ones, more stable, less battery using?
7.
I got an 8gb external sd card, system only is showing , 4,9gb of 5,9gb free, maybe an sdcard bug like HD2 Leo had a time ago?
phone specification:
phone is rooted
I am using android 2.2.2
Baseband version 1035.21_20110405
Kernel version 2.6.32.9
Build number FRG83G

Battery life is a bit of an issue with the stock rom, since, on Froyo, there apparently is a problem with idle power consumption. This is much better on some of the custom roms based on Gingerbread, e.g. CM7.

The "official" rumours are, that there will definatelly be a 2.3.* update, though when is not clear, we will possibly have to wait until fall to get it.

Ideally, Android should be managin the RAM for you. The device does have 512 MB RAM, but mind that there is alot of stuff on the stock rom. You can have more available to you by
deleting or disabling widgets on the stock rom
installing a custom rom

It is called CyanogenMod7, and is a very popular custom rom, which exists for a lot of different Android devices, including the LGOS. It is also based on 2.3.4, so it basically already is a Gingerbread Rom, but I think it still has a Froyo kernel and/or userspace, so not completely native.

I'm not gonna call out 10 apps here, but living in Germany, you should definatelly check out "Öffi" (free). I also find Maverick (payware), GPS Essentials (Free) and Dropbox (free) to be quite handy.

This depends on how happy you are with modding your phone and flashing things on it. There can be quite a bit of work necessary to get a custom rom running on your phone, but it might be worth your while. I've used custom roms mainly for the fact that they can have massively lower battery consumption when the phone is idling (e.g. display off, standby). When using the phone actively, I've not found differences to be that big regarding battery life.

You are probably confusing the internal sd card with your external one. Keep in mind that the LGOS has a 6GiB internal sd card.
ok
thank you for this detailed answer.
i will take a look on the other Roms and will try it i think.
The problem with the sd card is not from confusing with the internal one.
Using the App, App 2 SD Free phone memory is showing me 1,45GB, on SD Card which must be the internal one shows me 5,51GB and on moveable which seems to be the external sd card it shows me 1,45GB again instood of my 8GB SD?

Random reboots. Software or hardware issue?

Hi guys
I got an x1 few days ago. I'm very happy with the phone and I updated it to the new firmware 14.1.G.2.257.
In the last 3 days, after the update, I got 3 random reboots. I don't know if it was happening also with the old firmware cause I used it just for few hours.
Now I'd like to understand if it is a software problem so I need just to wait for a new firmware or it is an hardware issue so I need to return the phone.
Thanks to anyone would help me.

in all honesty since having this phone i have not had one random reboot. When ever i upgrade firmware i always do a fullwipe to rule any issues out. But one thing i have seen happen is some apps can cause reboots, some apps cause wakelocks and some apps can cause battery drain. What i would do as a test is reflash firmware and dont install any other apps other than your standard google apps, see how that goes

thanks my only concern is about hardware but I don't think this is the case... maybe there is a bad memory management in this firmware? I read about other people having issues like this.

I really dont know, i keep hearing so may contrasting issues with this phone. I have not had 1 issue with the phone, but everywhere i see soo many issues, im certain theres a bad batch of z1's out there. I don't think its a hardware issue in your case, i cant really be sure about the memory management becuase this newer firmwares changelog included better memory management. i really think you should start from scratch as a test, and slowly add other apps, this way you can slowly eliminate whats causing this issue.

Note 4 T-Mobile 32GB Random Rebooting/Slow

Hello my Note 4 is randomly rebooting all the time (it occurs randomly) and is slow (sometimes) when I use apps like messages, browsing the web etc...
I'm on the 6.0.1 marshmallow
I installed the clean master and battery saver apps and things were alittle better but it still is slow and restarts plus those apps are filled with spam and virus links so they will be deleted.
What are my options here to get this note running like new again?

First of all you delete apps like clean master and battery saver cuz this app killing your processor ram and battery .android 6.0 is very well optimized and it can handle everything without any 3rd party app. Just make factory reset, disable apps you dont use ,do not install junk or ram cleaning apps or even battery saving apps, android Marshmallow allready has doze feature that save battery while you are not using phone and goes to deep sleep. go to settings/battery/detail and you will see all apps are in doze.

Any answers on the gentleman's inquiry though? I have a T-mobile Galaxy Note 4, and after having the phone for 1 year and a half, all of a sudden it started acting up last Thursday while I was running my stock 5.0.1, I had it rooted and TWRP on it since I bought it. The phone was a GREAT acquisition and I've always been an Android guy and started to learn about flashing, rooting and XDA since I had my S, S2. I thought that by simply upgrading my 910T to the new MM 6.0.1 everything was going to be taken care of and fixed, but boy was I so wrong.
Could you shed some light on this issue on this great phone?

I think he answered pretty well. You should understand that these phones are, in essence, small computers. And like a computer, the phones will become fragmented and bog down overtime. The solution is a complete format of internal storage; wipe everything, format, cache and start from scratch. Odin is the best option so learn to use it if you haven't already.

Thanks for your reply, however I asked the question to the gentleman as he only said to remove all of those junk third party apps as they were more harmful than anything else. I appreciate the lecture on what constitutes a phone, but I am very aware of it as well as being comfortable of the use of Odin and the rest of the steps. I have already done all that you suggested and the issues still occur after a week. Once again, I appreciate your reply.

True! I stand corrected sir. I appreciate your assistance.
Hey guys, so today I tried a different battery cause my was bad and overheating and I can tell this one is good because it also is charging faster than before.
Now I did delete those apps clean master and battery saver like I said I would but I'm still getting random rebooting and slowness, one example would be I was typing a text and the phone took awhile to catch up to my typing and suddenly it restarted itself.
I'm not rooted and my rom is stock. Noticed today that my water indicator underneath the battery has triggered.
So I'm still looking for options...let me know, thanks.

Laggggg on Marshmallow or is it just me?

My UI freezes for 5 - 15 seconds, particularly when the phone regains network connectivity (reconnecting wifi or mobile network going from 0 to 1 bars). It's much improved after removing FB and Insta but. My launcher is even getting closed when the phone frequently, although the phone has ~500MB free RAM.
I dropped this poor phone one too many times, so before I replace it with another z3 compact, I'm wondering if everyone else on Marshmallow is seeing poor responsiveness as well.
I did have slow downs before but not like that,I have switched to Lineage and it works very well so I don't have any plans going back to stock Marshmallow.
yeah same here, i advice you to switch to lineage, you will feel like butter on the screen.
I don't have any lags at all, no launcher refreshes or whatever on stock MM. ( I don't use the horrible Facebook application)
Until 3 weeks ago, I used to have no lags at all on my stock Marshmallow 6.0.1 Z3C. I had uptime of 50 days and more and it didn't lag. Now, it happened twice in a row that my System RAM usage grew in last 5 days to 1,3 GB! It seems like a memory leak in kernel space. It's hard to pinpoint particular process. The phone is slow, multitasking doesn't work (reloads every app), my stock launcher redraws and the phone is unable to make/receive GSM calls - probably a symptom of low on memory state. I wonder, if it's caused by bluetooth driver, because I've transfered 100MB file on both occasions. I need more time to analyze this, this time I won't turn bluetooth on, so I can see if it is the cause.
Edit: I'm confident the cause is not bluetooth. Symptoms now appear after just 65 hours of uptime - . Now I tried to get rid of ES File Explorer, let's see what this bloatware did to system performace.
Edit 2: It seems the problem is gone after uninstalling ES File Explorer. Before uninstalling it had data storage set to external SD card. I replaced this piece of bloatware by open-source explorer called Amaze.
Thanks all. I was avoiding Lineage because I wanted the stock camera / DRM and their description makes it sound very unstable... "random reboots while charging", etc. I'll try it out anyway and add the stock camera back in if it runs well.

camera works like stock in lineage, don't worry about that. you can face with other small bugs but still worth to use, it is better than stock in most cases.

there must be a reason that it is slow as hell in stock while it works with jet speed in lineage. something related to sony software, hardware is okay.
Wipe cache (Power and vol+ until 3 Vibrations) helped a little, but i don't put too much hope in it.
It's my gf's Phone so i kind of hesitate to install some unstable beta on it. Or is there any real stable release out there?
Sony haven't pushed out any updates for over a year, so not sure how you can blame it on MM build.
It'll be an app.
My money's on Facebook or Messanger.
No lags or slowdowns on my phone, had the same build on it for a year now.
Autoupdates turned OFF.
No Facebook/Messanger.

Last year Facbook deliberatly broke their app, made it run slow and heat your phone up, as an experiment, to see what people would do. They honestly don't give a sh*t about what you think of thier app.
Uninstall it and use your browser, see if it makes a difference.
Try SD Maid from the playstore, that does some good basic houskeeping

Therefore I do not have facebook or messenger installed.
But I do have these slowdowns :-/
I read in an italian forum that it's the Google app fault, you should unistall updates and disable automatic updates until it's fixed.

Now I have an uptime of 125 hours and counting, my System RAM usage is 0.90 GB and it isn't rising to 1.3 GB as it did before. So the phone is really smooth again. When I was checking my LogCat using DDMS, there seemed to be recurring message of ES File Explorer (estrong) leaking something, I don't remember if it was a window or an activity. What a piece of chinese malware it became. Interestingly, ES File Explorer's memory footprint was low (3 processes, 10MB total user space memory), even when leaking memory and this made debugging harder. Although I killed it, when the phone had problem (1.3 GB system memory), only a reboot worked. It totally seems like a memory leak to me.
GL debugging yours.
it works good with me ..
try to make clean install
I'm not going back to this crappy app. Once, it used to be outstanding, but they probably sold the app to another company in China and from there it went downhill. A lot of popups and ads for things I don't need. Their only purpose is to make your phone slower (bloatware) and optionally, to get money from you. I like simple, minimalistic apps, which do things they are designed for and do it right. Just this Linux approach and also "less is sometimes more".
It's confirmed that ES File Explorer makes network connections to China in background, no thanks!
