Hi all.
Got my SGS a couple of weeks ago, and (almost) all is great.
I spend most of my time inside the university (I live on campus) and all of the web traffic here passes through a proxy server. Problem is - some of the apps (including the Market) just can't see the connection.
I have (of course) the right Advanced Network Settings (proxy server and port), and this sorts out some of the apps (like the default browser and gmail app), but the market is unreachable, and FB app (for example) can't access the net as well.
Some more data:
I'm running 2.1.
There is no problem to access these sites using a desktop/laptop computer.
I don't use 3G, relying only on WiFi.
Proxy server has no authentication.
Everything works perfectly whenever I leave campus.
Is there anything I can do?
Would this issue be resolved in the (hopefully) forthcoming 2.2 upgrade?
Thanks!
Hey do you have to log in to go online. At my past college and my current uni all android phones where you had to log in via the browser didn't work. However my friend with a Desire with 2.2 can log in, this maybe a wild guess but maybe the updated browser allows for the log in procedures to work, im not sure what its written in, javascript, php, asp no idea but that's my guess> Ive got the same problem if you get it to work let me know and if you know someone with froyo can you ask them to try or maybe its just with newer HTC phones.
Thanks for the reply.
I don't need to log in, there's no authentication, and still there's no access.
It feels like a dodgy implementation of the proxy settings in Android, and I really hope they fix it in 2.2, because it makes my phone really crippled.
Yer I really hope so to on our network their is no pass to access
its completely open but you have to log in via the browser
A quick update.
Just installed a localized (hebrew) version of Froyo (JHJP4 if it interests someone).
I can't comment on anything else at the moment, but the proxy problems are NOT solved. Still can't access the market...

Hi All,
I've made a program supporting all originally supported wifi protocols as well as WPA/WPA2 enterprise protocols. This program can be used to set up connection with wireless networks using enterprise protocols.
What you need to do is to select proper protocol/authentification methods. Provide certification files if you have them. You can put certs files anywhere in your SD card. Then click OK.
You need to disable your wifi and re-enable it. Root is required.
Please visit my blog for more updates: http://fredzhung.blogspot.com/
** THIS IS NOT WELL TESTED, But works for Purdue University. (WPA ENTERPRISE WITH THAWTE_PREMIUM_SERVIER certs.)**
[UPDATE MAY-11] 1.0.2 RELEASE
ADDED SUPPORT FOR AD-HOC!
Added support for memorizing all configurations.
Need some test.
[EDIT] v0.2 RELEASE.
fixed a bug connecting to open network.
added support for anonymous indentity in EAP
added help/about
added input validation
changed icon
If this Wifi Helper doesn't work with your company's/school's wifi settings, please provide me your wifi setup so I can figure out what's wrong.
There seem to be a bug that first time run will hang. Close the program when the "force close" window pops up. Then run it again. Add the program to superuser list when asked.
This seem to be a bug for all applications requiring root access in android 1.5. I tested with terminal emulator and it has the same bug as well. Something is wrong with superuser program.
The app is uploaded to Market. Have fun!
Using this to access wifi on campus
Hi
I am a novice at all this root stuff so my questions is straightforward
a) If i buy a G1 (not rooted etc) and install this application from the market, i should be able to access my campus wifi? This is one reason why I am still using the iphone (unlocked on tmobile).
b) Is this likely to work even after the 1.5/cupcake transition that seems to be imminent?
Thanks
ps I am at LSU and here are some of the wifi details for the campus:
http://grok.lsu.edu/Article.aspx?articleId=8198
Hi, if you buy a g1 from store, you need to root it first before using this app. totorials for rooting your phone can be found on the sticky threads.
After you root your phone and use this app, you should be able to connect to your campus wifi. This is the purpose of this app.
May 11: 1.0.2 is released. Available in market
Hey zhang!
Great work, but i am having problems getting the ad-hoc to work.
It's been setup on my laptop and i have tried w/WPA & open to no avail.
The phone does not seem to detect the network.
I'm running 1.5 JF ADP.
Any thoughts as to what i might be doing wrong?
And thanks for the ad-hoc capability, been waiting on that one
Sean
Hi Sean,
I've been doing experiments with adhoc, I am not 100% sure adhoc will work. I will keep trying.
Great, great, great job!
I'm gonna buy the pro one, just as a "thank you"..
It seems it won't even detect my adhoc network
Hi. I use the free version (will buy it if it actually works) but I can't seem to even detect my adhoc networh. I use the ICS on XP laptop. I setup an open network with no encryption for the test but the G1 doesn't detect it (it sets it up and says it's unavailable, thus allowing me only to "forget" it). Do I have to change anything else on my device (for example the tiwlan.ini) so my device actually shows those elusive adhoc networks. Has anyone actually succeeded to setup properly an adhoc connection on G1 ever with any kind of software or is it like the UFO - we hear it exists but we've never actually seen it?
I cna't get it to work on my university's WPA2 Enterprise with a 'GTE CyberTrust Global Root' certificate (with extention cer).
I'm using a Vodafone Magic
I am also having a problem with a WPA2 enterprise setup.
It is a eduroam network.
On my computer I have entered the following setup in wicd:
encryption: PEAP with TKIP/MSCHAPv2
identity: my username
password: my password
In the wifi list (in the android system menu) the eduroam network shows as "Not in range, remembered"
I have another problem with the app itself: "Modify configurations" does not work. This makes it a hassle to try different encryption settings.
I know the network also works with PEAP with GTC, but don't know how to set that up.
Where did this go? It's no longer on the market. I can't find it anywhere!
Yeah, I was looking for this app and can't seem to find it anywhere. It disappeared. Does anyone have the apk?
Boogy
Try WiFi Buddy...free and works great.
All you had to do was go to his site...
http://fredzhung.blogspot.com/2009/05/download-for-wifi-helper.html
In need of help again, very sorry.
using froyo 2.2 on an ATT vers Nexus One.
Problem:
So with using the default browser (mozilla?), as well as Dolphin HD browser...there are a few important sites I cannot load (no matter what) via 3g or 2G data.
It tries to load at first but just quickly stops leaving me at a blank page.
However, if i switch to my wi-fi network, these same problem pages will load without issue. Not a problem.
But switch back to mobile data 2G or 3G...these sites will not load.
All other websites I visit (so far) load fine either wifi or 3g/2g, it's just some specific ones. This is a constant and consistent problem with specific websites.
The sites are
- hotmail
- ebay mobile
* but I'm sure I'd find others.
So it's strange...perhaps this is best asked in the dev section?
I have no idea what to search on this problem (here or google).
It's as if something is out of whack at the browser end, like it's reading some form data that I could fix/edit/delete and resolve this problem. Or perhaps it's some security bug/issue...
Either way, I need to get this fixed so I can check hotmail if I need to while on the road, ....problem is I don't know where or what to do here for a fix. Any suggestions?
Certain config file, or the like I can edit or del for a fix?
I've DEL the cache, form data, cookies, etc...everything. No fix.
Can the default browser on the nexus one be uninstalled/reinstalled?
I know I can uninstall/reinstall Dolphin HD, I'll try that.
I also like the default browser though...any way this can be fixed?
man, this problem is getting worse...and it's happening in other browsers too.
dolphin and opera.
it's as if there's a glitch that occurs if you once viewed a site via wifi...then when using 3G it has hang ups (blank load screen).
Is there anyone who might have an answer here?
Can the built in browser be reinstalled (froyo 2.2) to try and fix?
Works fine for me.
?
I'm sure it does, and that's great. Most pages load fine too here...but...
As mentioned it seems to be more of an odd or rare "glitch" here...like something that goes awry under special circumstances (won't load a certain page under 3g/2g data - but will load same page using my wifi).
Now it's happening with facebook in default browser and dolphin. Seems to be happening due to usage at home (wifi)...then accessing same via 3G/2G (not at home). Some hiccup...causing a no load scenario with cell data (no problems via wifi though).
Can we please only reply if this is something you also encountered or may know what's going on here?
I'm no expert but the sites you described seem to be https sites, a secured version of normal webpages. And you're trying to acces those sites through an unsecured data connection 3G/2G.
So I don't know exactly what https does but I assume it won't allow you to send/receive your data over an unencrypted network.
But as for your hotmail problem, you can configure your stock e-mail app to receive your hotmails.
This definitely is the wrong section to post this, you might get a lot of flack for posting here!
Try installing a new rom, your issues are not normal. Try Enom's newest -- it has a stable kernel, and offers perhaps an updated apn file. Short of that, you need to call your cellphone provider, and find out the apn settings from them (double check), and/or why they are restricting access...
I understand your frustration with not getting a response in the Q&A section, but the dev section is for devs and testers. Maybe look at what distribution of froyo you are running (cyanogen? enom? kang-o-rama? leo?) and post in their respective threads. and if this is just a stock updated froyo, you definitely need to call your cellphone provider.
Good luck!
Also, note the rules: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614062
verify your APN settings. Same thing happened to me & proper APN settings fixed it.
Not sure the proper ones for AT&T, however.
edit: make sure to clear anything that ought to be cleared -- an asterisk isn't the same as cleared
Delete your Proxy IP and Port under APN settings and try to reload the page.
As mentioned above, 1) this is wrong section, 2) if you're on a custom ROM - try another ROM, and if you're on stock FRF91 or any custom ROM does the same - then it's definitely a problem with your cellular provider and/or your APN settings.
It may pay to check that it's not your carrier.
Can you access those sites with your SIM in another phone?
Merged threads ... please do not create duplicate threads as it clutters up the forum and invites flamming/trolling responses.
Regards,
as ou see, the IM app seems to be very good. It has online intgration agenda and resource registration, but it seems that it only runs in verizon netowrk.
I did some research and it seems that this app trys to rise some HTTPS servers from google before to connect, however, these servers are unreachable from other network than verizon (i dont have verizon btw).
I was thinking at the beggining that problem was that google has recently changed their certificates, but after importing them into mobile, IM stil doesnt work.
Please help.
so are you making these assumptions based on urls you've trapped and if so, can you post them here?
Yes i like an integrated IM, stupid why it only works on VW network with us non VW/US early adopters.
I wonder what we can find in the deodexed impresence.apk and vzwim.apk files...

If you are referring to the HTTPS login attempts to the google login servers you may be misinterpreting GSF functionality vs Motorola IM.
I didnt get your answer. how ever, I paste my tcpdump capture. In this case i was trying to login into my AIM account, as you see (Im pretty sure there were not other apps trying to use internet cause i close all by hand usng task manager), for somereason application tries to reach a google server and after several IP tries it fails.
Hello,
I have been finding googling a lot from last 3-4 days but no luck so posting.
I want to be able to use VPN but i found the settings on droid little hard to configure.
I made account on Openvpn and then i read documentation but no mention of which port to select and server.
So can anyone help me on that one?
I am on stock GB.
BTW the main reason to run VPN is i read constantly that using VPN you mostly get free 3g speeds in BSNL(indian carrier) so wanted to give it a try.
I have a Sony camera that can FTP photos to my phone while I am shooting. Works perfectly using the IP of the phone in the FTP client when connecting the camera to it using hotspot. AWESOME!
However, the IP of the phone changes every time I enable hotspot. As far as I have been able to find out this is by design. This is an issue, since I need to go into the menu of my camera and change the IP. Not so awesome. No keyboard on camera.
I had the brilliant idea of trying to use the DNS name of the phone instead of IP. Works fine when both devices are on the same wifi, eg at home, but when the phone is the hotspot I find that there is no DNS name for the phone.
Any tips? Is there something I have not thought of?
Noone has any experience with this, please?
Interesting workflow you've got here. I use WebDav via FX File Explorer on a static IP address (within my network) to have a single shortcut on my computers to jump right into the phone without a cable. I know this is different, but I'm just sharing because I know exactly what you're going for. Unfortunately, the WAN IP on a mobile device will always be different when it's enabled.
The only thing I can think of that would manage this would be a dynamic DNS client directly on your phone. I imagine this is possible through a paid service - I run dynamic DNS on my Synology NAS out of my house since I do not have a static WAN IP. Synology provides this for free once you buy their hardware. I believe Asus provides this as well for their routers. There's gotta be a solution for Android, I've just not looked into it and I've gotta run out shortly or I would. You've got me curious so I am going to read into this later. Hope this helps a bit, I will post back.
Edit: a quick google seems to boast a lot of options for this! It should absolutely solve your problem.
Woops. looks like my reply from my phone a few days ago never saved.
I really like that the photos are available on my phone for sharing instantly when I am shooting. There is a Sony app that can perform the same, but it does not do RAW, and it compresses the JPG down to 2 MB. By using FTP I have the option of getting the full size JPG as well as the RAW straight to my phone for editing or sharing instantly.
I am considering FTPing to my home server where I run a FTP server, but then I need to find a way to make the files available on my phone again. Using OneDrive syncing the FTP destination folder or similar should do the trick. However, it requires double the data since I am uploading the photo to the server and then downloading it to my phone using OneDrive.
Is there a "local" DNS app that I can run on my phone, eg one that announces to the local network created by the hotspot? I have used no-ip and dyndns. but that is for announcing a DNS name for my public IP.
I was hoping there was a %gateway% or other variable I could use to resolve to the phone in hotspot mode.
