Headphone jack problems - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im currently on my 3rd hero. The first one was replaced due to the headphone jack kicking the bucket, and the second was bc sprint seemed to think my 2.1 lag was a software issue. Now, being on my 3rd hero, my headphone jack seems to be cutting out AGAIN! This time its only the left channel. the left cut out on 2 sets of headphones and in my car, so its definately a phone issue and not a speaker issue.
Does anyone know a way around this to fix it? Im fairly certain its not a software issue, as i had the same problem on stock sense as well as cm6. I really have no desire to get yet another hero from sprint...

I've had a similar problem. Only on my 1st Hero, but the left channel went out randomly today. Thought it was a headphone issue, bought new ones, it wasn't. Checked the old and new headphones on other devices, they work. Definitely the 3.5mm jack on the phone.
What did you end up doing?
I'm not thrilled with getting another Hero, even though I have insurance. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? I use my music through headphones a ton, so before I go back to school, I need this fixed. Guy told me he'd order a new Hero for me, could send it to my school... ugh. Any ideas?

DIY speaker replacement?

I've had the hero for several months. Love it. All that there good stuff. Today, I was listening to Pandora while at work (like I do everyday). Then, the song started cutting in and out. I assumed it was because I was in a basement. I got outside. Same problem. I've rebooted the phone several times. No sounds through the external speaker seem to work. Speaker phone included. The ear speaker works normal for making calls and such.
Does anyone know of a place that sells replacement speakers? Or if you've had this problem. How much does Sprint charge to replace the speaker? Will they?
Should still be under warranty with sprint. Speaker has blown on several peoples phones.
Before you go to the trouble of having sprint replace your phone I would suggest you listen to music thats on your sdcard for a day. Being as it streams from the internet I have had Pandora cut out on me fairly often when it syncs data.

was the first thing i tried when it happened. music on the phone, notifications, and speaker phone. along with anything related to the external speaker. doesnt work. :-(
Just thought I'd update. They fixed it. At no charge. I don't know if it was because I have insurance or if it was warranty, but they did fix it for "free".

Same for me. Speaker blew, I reloaded 2.1 and took it in, they replaced the speaker (or replaced something) for free in about an hour. Wish they would have let me watch the procedure though.
I had a similar problem on my first hero with the headphone jack cutting out. Sprint replaced the phone with no problems

Headphone jack problem - please read and comment..

My Streak7 has sprung up a little problem where the audio cuts off when the headphone plug is wiggled slightly. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, did you get it replaced? And if so, did your replacement have the same problem?
I am trying to figure out if this is common or not, as I have two weeks left before I have to keep this thing, if this is a common issue - I will have to get a refund as the main use for this is listening to music at work. So, even if you have not had this issue, please post telling me so. For mine, when the cable is pressed towards the front of the device it cuts off, when it is pressed towards the back it does not. Obviously it is a short with the pin, perhaps it is just bent...
Thanks..

It did not happen in my case.
It should be a audio jack problem. or the headset.

Gotta be the jack, I tried three different cables same thing, it looks like one of the metal pins (looking into the jack it is the one on the screen side) is pushed in when it should be protruding slightly. I am going to get a replacement (thank goodness for root & Nandroid!) and hope it doesn't develop this problem... I really like my Streak.
Just a quick update, T-Mobile confirms that this is not a known common issue for the device, so that makes me feel better. I will swap it out on Saturday (work schedule doesn't allow me to get to a store before then) and pray the new one doesn't ever have this issue. If anyone else feels like chiming in on the subject, please do - the more responses the better..
I had a similar problem with one set of headphones. I think it might be related to the length of the pin. I tried using standard ipod headphones and worked fine (short pin). The first set I used that did not work had a microphone attached to them. I have not tried with any other since (longer pin).

Unfortunately for me, this is with numerous headphones and cables all with different styled plugs. Some with the longer plug (meant for i-whatevers), some with standard shorter plugs, and some in-between. The stock headphones, the stock headphones from my Nexus One, the stock headphones from my wife's MT3GS, the stock cable from my AKG headphones and all of the custom cables I have for my headphones... I am getting it replaced tomorrow. Thanks for sharing your experience though.
No problems using samsung vibrant headphones on my streak. Haven't tried any others yet. Think you just got a bum device.

Yeah, looking into the new device's jack you can definitely see where the old one was broken. The connector was almost shoved into the device, whereas it should protrude slightly.
Restoring my internal storage, then I will restore my Nandroid backup and hopefully be up and running like this never happened. Never tried restoring a Nandroid onto a replacement device before, hope it works out!
Restoring my Nandroid now! Can't wait to boot it up!
Booting!!! Oh my, the anxiety.
Hot ****in' damn! it worked 100%!
No this issue with my streak 7 + SHURE earphone

[Q] Very bad 3,5mm headphone port on Milestone

Hey Guys,
I just wanted to ask you if I am the only one to experience this.
I already have my second Motorola Milestone, because i sent back the first one due to a broken headphone-port. But the port of the new one ain't any better at all.
No matter how deep i plug headphones in, I just have to touch them a bit and the sound starts to rustle or the sound quality is going far down.
That already happened on the newly replaced phone. It's impossible to use it as an mp3 Player that way...
Is that a common hardware-bug on the milestone, or did they just send me back my old device??
My headphone port have the same problem with yours recently, but not so bad, I think the reason is, the port has been use too much times, new phone should not have this issue, or maybe you can try ust a different headphone to test.
same here, and it's getting worse, but i don't remember whether it was broken when i bought it
ahha....this common for milestone...i manage to reduce the impact by stuffing the gap of the outer mating surface with some soft plastic..i found it online but couldnt remember the link...i ll post it here if i find it..
You definitely not the only one. Have the same problem but proably not as much as you. Definitely irritating.
you use oem headset, i think because of your headsets not plug correctly into MS!

Headphone jack not working

Hi guys, I post this problem with a very heavy heart because I know somewhere inside that it's unfixable.
So, I sent my phone in for the unbrickable mod, all was successful, but now the headphone jack is absolutely not responding... I tried 4 roms, full format, kernel change, voodoo, nothing works... When I plug in an earphone, all sound still comes from the speaker... It's like no matter what, the earphone jack has stopped responding... Bluetooth earphones work fine, proximity sensor works fine, as it is my understanding that the headphone jack and proximity sensor connectors are linked... Everything else works perfectly.
Can somebody pls suggest a simple hardware or software solution that might help me? I could easily send it in for repairs, but I can't go without this phone for a week, again. This is currently my only smartphone, so if nothing else works, I will send it in, hopefully, by the end of November, when I get my nexus prime. In the meantime, any ideas??????
Sent from my cell phone. DUH.
It's got to be a hardware issue. I've seen something similar to this for computers, but not Smartphones. Usually whatever component the headphone jack is soldered to is the part to get replaced and then it magically starts working. I can't imagine in any way that AdamOutler would accidentally break the headphone jack. Unless maybe there is a single wire he didn't put back together and its causing only the headphone jack not to work...just potential thoughts.
Unfortunately, your best bet is going to be to give it up for another week. I lost my Smartphone the past week due to Soft Bricking it and I went insane, so I know the feeling. JIG should be in the next couple days.
Good Luck!
Yea.. Nothing on Adam, he's been a huge help.. Just wondering if there was some sort of small adjustment I could do that will help... Otherwise I will just live with it for a couple of months n send it in when my nexus comes in.

Sound only one channel for headphones

Hello,
I just used my headphone jack for the first time over vacation last week, and I was wondering if anyone else had issue with their headphone jack? I took a pair of working headphones (that I use for my computer) plugged them into the phone (on stock rom) and I only get one ear to work. Could this have been caused by unlocking the bootloader or anything? it's the first time I've had this issue, and it sucks because it makes the phone partially unusable.
Is this something I should contact motorola over? Or maybe there is a firmware fix somewhere? I'm doing a little thinking out loud.. but I want to see if anyone else is having issues?
Haven't experienced that issue. Sounds like a hardware problem.

My Bravo does that sometimes, it was caused from plugging and unplugging too way many times (2-3 times a day for 2 years). I thought had a similar situation with the AHD, but it ended up being a short in my headphones volume slider.
Try blowing dust out like an old NES game, rotating the plug while plugging/unplugging a few times, and try multiple headphones if possible -- it might just not like those particular headphones.
Unlocking the bootloader won't cause an issue like that. Could be either hardware or software failure. To test if this is a software issue, try flashing multiple roms and see if the condition persists. If it does then this is likely a hardware failure. If hardware and unlocked, contact Motorola and tell them it just quit turning on one day say "I went to bed, woke up, and it wasn't working." Do NOT mention kernel, rom, CM, bootloader, root, XDA, Linux, or anythin that makes you sound like you might know something -- trust me there. If they'll accept it for warranty with that excuse fry the board so it can't boot, which we have 2 options for -- super clocked way over volted kernel or splicing a 110v male end directly with the mini usb plug for a phone. If the don't accept it for warranty, you'll have to buy a replacement jack (maybe front housing, never looked up AHD spare parts) and fix it yourself.
Had a similar problem. Use rubbing alcohol and a one of those thin dental brushes.
The alcohol will vaporize (DONT POUR IT IN OBV). It could be an issue with dust collection over one channel connection.
For a control expt try with another pair of earphones to make sure they're not the problem
