[Q] Possible to root device without usb functionality? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my usb is screwed ive reset the device, taken it apart and cleaned the solder connections with a brissle and rubbing alchol, etc.. I was wondering if there is a possible way to root my device if I already have GodSpeed Recovery Darchstar Edition? I would really like to customize my device but cant root it due to the lack of usb functionality. Thanks for any help guys!!

I have never tried this, but I am pretty sure I have read threads about an app called universal root....and it works on the hero....

Droid Explorer or?

Is there a better program to interface between my Captivate and my desktop or is Droid Explorer it?
Please don't recommend Kies, I've wasted enough hours on it.
I actually found a working version of Kies for the ATT Captivate running rooted stock updated rom. If you're interested in giving it one last try, I made a post in the stickied Kies thread.

Thanks but I already tried that one and I used a USB port on the back of the computer. I tried in USB debug mode and not, I checked Kies on the phone, mass storage, all of them, nothing works.
I actually think that Droid explorer (in concert with Root Explorer on the phone) is one of the most under used and underrated softwares available. It makes life a hell of a lot easier and even allows you to do a handful of things without root that otherwise require it.
jus sayin...
I personally prefer QtADB which makes ADB a million times easier to use

+1 for droid explorer, but its just a shameless plug really
Droid Commander is awesome, even signs apk's via SignAPK if you're into modding your apps.

sold my rooted hero-new owner can't activate?

hey all. so i recently sold my old sprint hero that was rooted to cm6 and the new owner says that sprint hasn't been able to activate it to their account? is this normal? when i sold it, i did a reset to clear my data but i left it rooted (at their request). can someone tell me the easiest way to tell them how to unroot the phone? from speaking to them, i get the impression that they don't know much about this type of thing.

You guys should meet back up and you should flash a sense rom for them.
Only way for them to activate.
that's what i was afraid of. i sold the phone on ebay so it isn't someone local that i can meet with. so would you say that the easiest route would be for me to create a micro sd for them to boot from (someone else rooted my phone for me, but i rooted my nook color this way)? do you know offhand where i could find instructions to do this? i searched the android development forum but didn't see anything that dealt with going back to stock.

I found this guide and found it very helpful it has a ton of stuff.. for your issue see Factory Reset not too far down.
Hero Root Guide
Just use the ruu in zip format is does it all for you in one file. Just send him the zip, tell him to put it on his sd, power the phone off, plug in the charger, hold down volume and power and 15 min later wham pure stock. No root no recovery. Just like out of the box
Yea it's me again. The one with the -Modified-Hero

Don't Quote me but, I'm Thinking the new owner should be able to Activate it by phone! At least I was able to with Mine! If not try just installing a 2.1 sense Rom and Delete the Superuser App, From my Experiences Chances are they Won't even Check for Root!!
Good Luck!

Wither way they need to reprogram the phone for his phone number, and the only way to do that is use the hash codes which only work on sense roms. Otherwise, if you know your way around qpst, you can do it from stock.

How about using a Linux USB Live system?
Won't I have to reformat the hard drive? Still need the info on it... I'm an old-school tech, so I'm not sure... plus I'd have to boot from phone, s3, no dab or any type of drivers... Hey thanx though, any info helps

No - install a Linux Live image onto a spare USB stick and just boot the laptop off that. It will give you full access to the hard-drive and you can get any data you need off it.
Take Ownership
the live cd doesn't touch your hard drive as far as formatting goes.
Another option that is something extremely helpful all the time anyway is the take ownership registry hack. I've provided the link below. all you have to do is extract, open the 'Add Take Ownership Option.reg' file and boom its in. then you right click on the folder you need access to and click 'Take Ownership'. Depending on how many files are in the folder and the processor it could take awhile. Basically it is doing the same thing you would do from the command line to take ownership but without all the fuss of having to manually do it for every single file. Hope this helps.

Risks of Rooting?

Ok so, I bought this awesome device and Im waiting for it to be delivered. I know that rooting has awesome features and great things, but Im wondering if someone has experienced any kind of issue after rooting... I read somewhere here in the forum, that the Wifi on someone's tablet stopped working and he had to return it.. Sadly, I can't be returning stuff since I live out of the states and is not that easy... Hope someone can tell me ^^ Would love to have 3 or 4 answers for me to take my decision. Thanks in advance.

If you follow instructions to a complete letter and make sure it's the correct rooting instructions for your version number, then all should be well but I do have to say that it's always done at your own risk. There's no way around that.
I have not read anyone else with rooting problems on here for the KFHD. The guy with the wifi post which I've read most likely got a dud. Mine was rooted and ran fine for me. I returned mine for other reasons.
Just be careful on what you do to your device. If you do something you shouldn't with your "extra privileges", it can be easy to brick your device. Especially when it's so young in development stages right now.
I received my fire a week ago. I intended to root it like I have all other android devices I own.
I have kept it stock and probably will for awhile. I just did not feel the need to root. I side loaded GMail and most other Google apps I wanted. I side loaded adw launcher and dolphin browser. So I feel no real reason to root since a few people have had problems.
Now when the boot loader gets unlocked and there is custom Roms now that is a different story.

I rooted yesterday. Got go ex as default launcher, play store, dolphin, etc. No problems yet. Seems faster, if anything.
There aren't many risks with it other then the average (brick). Which can occur with any device. Just make sure you follow the steps correctly step by step, and make sure your adb drivers are installed correctly.

My devices are all rooted, for my Bionic, it's so that I can use AdFree, Titanium Backup and to run AirBubble, which let's AirPlay devices see the phone and ply music to it remotely (or to whatever speakers it's plugged in to! ) It doesn't have to be used for illegal stuff, it just unlocks your phone's administrator privileges so that those that know specific use cases which require lower level code can go ahead and run. If you can already do everything you want with your phone, you don't need to root it.

Rooting is good for getting rid of bloatware too.
With rooting there is always a risk that you are going to screw something up. The easiest way to ensure that doesnt happen is to not root the device. But if you are going to anyway just don't do something you don't fully understand unless you are willing to take the risks.
For example if you do not know how to use adb then don't try at this time, play around with it on something else. If you still want root and don't know adb then use the automated root tool. All the hard stuff is done for you and there is no chance of inputting something wrong and causing problems. To avoid any conflicts with apps or settings reset the device to factory. Just one more step to take human error out of the equation.
After the device is rooted is when people tend to cause problems for themselves. IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS/DOES DON'T TOUCH IT!!! If you are messing around inside a file manager any folder outside the sdcard folder has the potential to cause problems so- IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS/DOES DON'T TOUCH IT!!!(unless you can afford the risk)
When making changes, research what you are trying to do extensively and don't rely on one source. What worked for one person will not always work for another, to many variables.
All in all just aire on the side of caution.
Thanks for all responses ^^ I've had other android devices and I had rooted them, but Im afraid with this one since I read about the wifi not working anymore... But thanks to all of you I might give it a shot. One last thing, I have 2 KFHD, do I have to install Adb for both?

I used the auto root tool without issues. I would think once you install adb on your Pc it should work for both. I had to also install the android sdk tool.

Usb unrecognized !!!!

I NOTICED A LOT OF USERS HAVE THIS BIG PROBLEM AND NOBODY DON`T GIVES A THING ABOUT IT .I want to make a call on a true developer and help us , because our phones became truly vegetables , we have tried their ROMs and now we have problems and nobody take a look at secondary efects, plz help us.
The computer doesn`t reconize the phone anymore .
host images
I had 4.2 jelly beam when i noticed that , because i wanted to downgrade to gingerbread .There i saw that in download mode the PC doesn`t reconize him .
I`ve tried: other computer , other cable , nexus drivers ,nexus toolkit and softs which can be installed by recovery mode , i`ve cleaned the micro USB slot. Result:nothing ,plz help me if any of you have a ideea
I found that very gently pushing the connector in the USB slot upwards sorted this out for me. My I9000 was virtually never recognised by Windows on loads of different ROM's, but it is found every time now. Might help you...be very careful though.
