Hello folks,
Well I recently made the switch from iPhone OS to Android , picked up a used Nexus One in pretty good shape, no scratches, like new and what not, the phone is amazing BUT I am having a hard time understanding some stuff (I thought I was getting a stock N1, and it seems it has been loaded w/ custom ROM and is rooted and unlocked. -which not bad in my opinion, but...
I still have some questions, I am trying to update to Froyo 2.2, and im not sure if I will ever get OTA since the phone has been messed around with and if i manually update to 2.2 it will cause trouble.
1) When I boot the phone it shows the "lock" to be opened, so I am assuming it is oem unlocked, the phone has working WiFi tethering (just like in 2.2)
2) also in the menu of the phone there is an app "superuser permission" which thats why assume the phone is also rooted
And finally In the "About phone" I get the following:
firmware 2.1-update1
baseband
32.36.00.28h_4.06.00.12_7
kernel
2.6.34-cyanogenmod
mod version
cyanogenmod-5.0.8-n1-test3
build
epe54b
I have reset the phone to factory settings, but the same info comes up everytime. the phone runs flawless, no lags, overall i love the phone.
And finally if anybody knows please feel free to share, I am trying to open port 80 on the N1 while it is running Wifi tethering and the only way i have found to do this is if the N1 is rooted, correct me if im wrong... i have a rovio that is refusing to connect to the N1s network...
Any positive input will be highly appreciated! thanks!
Your not very confused!
Your phone is unlocked and has root. its running cyanogenmod-5.0.8-n1-test3.
You can install a custom froyo rom without too much of a problem from recovery. Remember to nandroid-backup everything from recovery first.
Get into recovery by holding down the volume down button as you press the power button to power on the phone.
Heres an example of tethering via usb/forwarded port
http://blog.tangorangers.com/2009/02/tetherbot_android_and_slackware_how_to/
you can install 2.2 with no problem but you have to manually do it. you might get a notification for ota's but you won't be able to install them. just install it manually.
Man you guys are awesome! thanks for clearing this up for me.

Yeah man, you're money. For a used phone it is set up in possibly the best way possible for someone new to android and ready for you to throw the new CM6 ROM on there. You even have the proper radio already. You're good to go.
You can install Froyo in various ways. If you want total stock you can follow the instructions on this link and let OTA froyo install itself. If you need root you can download that from HERE
This method requires SDK installed with Fastboot on your computer with mandatory USB Drivers.
Or you can go the very easy way and use ROMs that is allready cooked, ready to flash in recovery right over your old ROM, like the link that is in my signature. It works great for me and is pretty much stock with root and a couple of extras you can delete via ADB if you don't need them..
Just download the Rom, drop it on the root of your SD Card and flash away in Recovery. all done!
What you are running is a test version of Cyanogen which is not the stable version. So it seems the previous owner didn't bother flashing it.
I'm completely stock right now with the new update H7 and new to this flashing and rooting stuff. I've been reading everything and seems yall got all this down to just clicking one button and the program does the rest.
So before i try this everyone says backup backup backup soo that leads to...
1. Is there anyway to back up my phone like it is now since i haven't rooted. Just in case something goes wrong
Or
2. is the only option i have is to do the one click root thing and back up the rom then try to flash the 2.2 ?
and
3. If something goes wrong and 2.2 doesn't flash right..could i just go into recovery mode and click reinstall packages and be back to the h7 (if i don't root to back up)? or does that recovery option get deleted/overwritten when i try to flash 2.2 with odin one click?
thanks for any help
You don't really have to back up your phone. It is up to you if you have important info, games etc that you want to keep. Lots of times games were either purchased from the market so they will be attached to your profile. Use appbrain to sync your market as well. Otherwise there really is no way to do a backup unless you are rooted.
so basically i'll have to root to back up the phone at its current state? ...i'm not really worried about having to reinstall everything i've only bought beautiful widget so far but i think froyo flash deletes everything anyways right? but i just want to be able to go back to stock in case something goes wrong and the flash doesn't work or say the phone screws up and i need the warranty.
If the flash goes wrong can i go back to recover mode and hit the reinstall and will it reinstall the h7 i have now back to the phone or will that recovery option be deleted when you try to flash the 2.2?
In rom manager you have the option to back up your phone in its current state. If you get boot loops or continuous force closes you would need to use odin to flash back and do root again to load rom manager. Then you would be able to load your backup.

ok thanks man, ...one more thing does the one click root/unroot work just fine with the 2.1-update1 right? the h7 firmware wont make a difference when trying to root?
That should have no issues with 2.1.
My experience with JH7 to 2.2 became a huge issue when I used Master Clear....
I could not for the life of me get the phone into Recovery or Download mode using the three button press or any other combo of USB battery pulls and button presses.....ended up biting the bullet and using the SDK method which turned out to work flawlessly.......after hours of searching, googling, reading and experimenting.....
I now have two Captivates in Stock froyo mode.
ok sorry guys, but I use to use my hero and i had it rooted, it was awhile ago and now ive been using a samsung moment rooted also. Just wanted to know if anyone can help me with whats new with the hero and get updated, i forgot how to flash the hero and crap -_- I've tried looking around but man its so confusing cause im use to sdx-developers.com lol so id appreciate if anyone has time to help out a bit. htc hero has the RA-heroc-v1.5.2 recovery and still on 1.5 my dad was using it. I had 2.1 before dont know what happen.
jus hit the stickies on the development board. using clockwork(rom manager in market) is the easiest way to install a recovery after rooting.
check the stickies. you can update ota to the newest sw version and root using the .7 sw method. ive done it personally and it sticks. if you can find posts by certain members...i posted links and junk to rooting the latest sw version.
Not Sure what you are trying to do with it, But... If It's still Rooted, Just Download Whatever Rom you want, Put it on your SdCards Main Directory & Reboot into Recovery!! **Make Sure Of Course that you "FIRST" Make a Nandroid Backup!! To do this go into Rom Manager and "FLASH" Wait Until It Says Flash Successful!!!!! Then Scroll to Backup Current Rom, When Done, Take Out Battery (Quickest) Put it Back In and Turn On Holding Volume Down Button, Next Press the Home Button to get into Clockwork Recovery, Then Choose Install Zip from SdCard, Go to New Rom/Select it/Reboot..... That's It, Should Be Good To Go!!

Hello,
I read most of the guide but couldn't find certain answers there nor by search, but apologies if I missed them elsewhere.
1) I'm happy with my SGS, I always used stock ROMs and am now on 2.2.1. I'd like to get root access and leave the rest as it is, however.
Is there any way to get root access with the stock 2.2.1 ROM without switching to a completely different ROM (as said, I like the stock ROM and don't feel like changing the layout, features and all that come with a new ROM)?
I saw that superoneclick thread but apparently it didn't work for everyone and questions are usually not answered there if people run into trouble so I didn't dare that yet.
2) Still a bit confused about the 2 modes. Do I need recovery mode to work? Or will download mode do to flash (if I have to) and rescue/fix my phone if something goes wrong?
My 3 combo button never worked so I bought a JIG dongle on ebay which gets my phone into download mode at least, but I still have no recovery mode yet that's why I'm asking.
Thanks!
There's an app called Quick Boot which will allow you to get into recovery mode but you need to have phone rooted.
Note though that Froyo uses 3e and I've tried to use update zips, wont take without going down to 2e recovery.

Warning etc I take no resposibility if you break something etc
First of all fix your 3 button for recovery, there should be some guides around here.
1. Try that superoneclick you posted the link to. If it wont work it wont work... But it will.
2. Recovery you need only if you want to tinker with the rom a little more and to do nice stuffs like backup. Or for a recovery
Oh and I am on stock rom + custom kernel + another modem and happy with it.
First I was rooted and the rest was as it is and I rooted with the super one click root . Dont forget USB debugging on. Once you root though I think wont be long till you start customizing a little . Good start is a nice good custom kernel
If you want to stick with stock you could try these stock roms which come pre-rooted, zip-aligned and deodexed (making them smoother and allowing the application of themes).

To fix the three button combo have a read of this thread. The OP of this one is really helpful if you're not sure what to do. I had to do this and it was the most nerve racking thing i've done to my phone as if this screws up you'll be sending it for repair.

Thanks a lot to all of you for your answers!
Had my first successful flash today (3 button combo mode) and will now take a more in depth look at rooting etc.
So far, I feel more comfortable to try a rooted stock kernel maybe instead of superoneclick.
However, if I had to unroot for any reason, how can I do that if I flashed the kernel?
The way I understood about ROMs and Kernels is that ROMs already contain kernels. So flashing a stock ROM would get me back to a stock kernel and the phone would be unrooted again?
you can also just flash a kernel and root such as cfroot or speedmod..

To un-root you can just flash a stock ROM (look in the general section to find them).
If you like stock ROMS then like the person above stated you can just flash a pure stock ROM then flash a new kernel (i.e. speedmod, voodoo etc.).
Good to hear the 3-button flash worked for you, now it is very difficult to brick your phone as you should always have the 3-button download mode which enables flashing with Odin.
Just be careful when picking a stock ROM, especially if its new, to check if it includes a new bootloader!!
Thanks all again!
and good on you for being sensible enough to get a jig.....best fiver I spent in ages. Every time I flashed back to an early stock it trashed my bootloader.
no worries about flashing now

Mate if you just want a simple to apply root access I would just use Z4root... its not used so much anymore but it works well and can be installed by just installing the app(can't be obtained from android market, internet only)..
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
otherwise you can just use Odin to flash CF-Root ( I do this all the time on stock firmware and works perfectly every time).

I used z4root on 2.2 but afaik z4root no longer works with 2.2.1.
I did flash the CF Kernel now and quite happy with it so far.
By the way, is it a bad idea trying to flash with Odin if the phone is connected via a USB hub instead of connecting it to the direct usb port? Each flashing failed on the 1st attempt (worked on the 2nd), no matter what I flashed so far. Some searching here indicates a hub is not recommended.
If that's the case, why is that not mentioned in all those read-me-first guides (or maybe I missed it somewhere)? Not every first-flash user will have a JIG at hand.
You're right you should have the USB cable plugged into a USB port on the motherboard (not a port in your pc case or a hub) for the least chance of flash failure.
Not sure why though tbh, I think it may have something to do with the Samsung USB drivers that get installed with Kies being a bit flaky.
Hi guys,
I have a I9000T on official Gingerbread. I want to root it to try some GPS fixes since my GPS cannot even give me a lock.
Anyway, I have been reading and reading these threads and I am absolutely confused! In some place I see that I should have 3-button combo fix before rooting but then when I go to the 3 button combo fix threads I read, that I need to be either superuser (which need root) or they say you have to root first.
Here is my worry, I bought my phone on amazon, it is an "international version" (not US) and thus Samsung US does not want to deal with me, so if I brick my phone I am pretty much screwed. Amazon uses some obscur warranty service but it seems it is quite restrictive, so I really would like to avoid bricking my phone since I won't have to option to ship the phone to Samsung.
So, please can someone tell me what I am supposed to do?
Also, for those who are familiar with the 3 button combo fix, I have a few questions after reading the thread:
- is Odin3 1.3 still ok to use (I see there is a 1.7 version but not a lot of people seem to use it)
- Are Odin3 and the fix file (.md5) are ok to use on 2.3.3 (this thread is rather old and people don't seem to answer it anymore)
Please any help will be so helpful.
nobody can help me? Seriously?
My friend, take it easy. I have an international version of the i9000 on puerto rico, and there is absolutely no way of anyone being able to help me, yet, I managed to customize my phone and love it.
First off, rooting is no complicated science. In fact, its incredibly simple, and pretty safe these days. Heres the best article for rooting your android. http://lifehacker.com/5789397/the-always-up+to+date-guide-to-rooting-any-android-phone
All you need to know is there. Also, is your 3 button combo damaged? You dont need to apply the fix if you can get into download mode. you do so, by pressing Volume down + Home + power while the phone is shut down. It should take you to the download mode screen.
You do not need to modify your phone much yet. If youre confused, chances are youre overwhelmed by the information. I got reckless myself with my phone and bricked it. Thankfully i got a new one, but you should be real careful. Just root, and read up. Then when you think youve learned enough I recommend you flash a new kernel, a custom one that has the fixes you need or want. but for now, rooting should get you the GPS fix and others, so just root, and look for the apps that can fix your phone. Good luck!
Hey, pretty newbish myself so hope this isn't like the blind leading the blind! Figured I could help with a couple of your questions though.
1. Odin3 v1.3 does work. I got that version and flashed speedmod to my i9000m no problemo. It did all the things it was meant to as per instruction threads/guides (ie the yellow COM box when connected in DL mode, the green Pass! when flashing complete etc)
2. I used SuperOneClick to root my phone before that and it wasn't too big a deal, but since learned that I could have just flashed the speedmod kernel and used that to root my phone by going into recovery mode and using the root option there.
so am not far ahead of you - i'm trying to currently work out which (if any) custom rom to try out.
oh - one glitch in all of this - i seem to have lost my ability to turn GPS on somewhere along the way (don't really use it so only discovered it recently - trying to find out how that happened and how to fix it!); otherwise all good!
make sure you have the 3 button combos!! wasn't sure by your post if you def did or not. assume you can
a) hold vol up/home/power to get into recovery mode;
b)hold vol down/home/power to get into DL mode?

My 3button combo does not work, like I believe a lot of the I9000(T), that is why the 3 button combo fix is around. In the Wiki they talk about rooting but they advise to fix the 3 button combo first, but when I when to one of the fix, they said I need to be root first, hence my questions.

Did you try rooting with super one click? In the link I posted you can find it. Rooting is very simple. You do not need to have the 3 button combo for it. Unless you want to flash a custom kernel or something. So read up my first post, the rooting guide and follow it. Its very safe. If your phone is not rooted with that, then look for a way to fix your 3 button combo. I suggest however to be real careful with that, since I bricked my phone doing just that, the first time.
1. BEFORE ROOT! Get to download mode. If combo doesn't work, get yourseld a JIG. REALLY!! No joke! Google it on XDA.

Australian Virgin Froyo 2.2 3BR Fix?
Hi there,
I'm currently going through the same thought process. I stumbled upon Richtofen's method for installing the 3BR fix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201
However the link to that thread no longer works - I was stumped by the updated Heimdall method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821698) when it said to check the partition for a certain string - which required root.
I wanted to go back to the Odin method, as I managed to find a user who had exactly the same phone and firmware as me:
Firmware version: 2.2
Baseband version: I9000DTJP3
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #7
Build number: FROYO.DTJP5
Anyone have success with this model/firmware setup and managed to resurrect 3BR?
Cheers,
Xav.
