[Q] What do I need to remove for warranty work? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I need to turn in my Hero for warranty work. I am about to RUU back to stock. My question is, do I need to remove any files or folders from the root of my SD card so they don't know I was rooted? Do they even look at the root?

They shouldn't be snooping around your SD, running the ruu should get you good to go.

Can I have apps2sd with unrooted phone?

Is it possiable to have apps2sd w/o having root? Can I use my sd card as flash memory on my unrooted g1? I dont want to root my g1 untill i know for certain they are not going to be upgrading it. Plus i tried once but i kind of messed up but got lucky and got a new phone from htc. thanks.
No, you cannot
well being worried about an update is pointless because things come out here before they come form your carrier (aka over the air). and its very hard to f up your phone unless your trying to put hero on it. but no you cant have a2sd without root sorry. if u feel brave read one of the 12 or so tutorials and try it again.

Restoring to stock ROM (N1 ATT)

I have been testing the N1 for a few days, and just making sure there aren't any hardware issues before I void the warranty (possibly) through unlocking the bootloader and flashing a ROM. I would like to know if it is possible to revert to a factory settings ROM with exactly the "out of the box" settings and OS.
Backup: Unlock, install a RA-nexus recovery, save current ROM to SD, save settings with a backup app.
Restore: Start RA-nexus, recover ROM from SD, do factory settings wipe.
Is this correct?
Currently you can't relock the bootloader, you can revert everything apart from this. It does void your warranty but apparently HTC have been decent about fixing rooted N1s with hardware defects anyhow.

As @nDrg said, you can't relock the bootloader, but you can restore the phone completely to the stock ROM... download the EPE54B stock ROM, rename it to PASSIMG.zip, copy it to the SD card, enter bootloader mode. The phone will find the zip and ask you if you want to apply the update... this will restore everything to the stock EPE54B ROM
Didn't work for me, please help...
Hello,
I tried to place the above listed file on my SD (tried the one from the link on your sig, and one from another source) and could not get it to recognize the file from bootloader, nor could I flash it from zip (via recovery).
I have been searching for a way to revert to stock ROM for days now (and I have been researching) and I can't seem to find a way that I can get to work. (I am running both cyanogenmod 5.06, and modaco's sense - switch back and forth with the RA revovery screen). I can't connect reliably to wifi on either, and want the option to go back to stock.
I'm very much new to Android (and the Nexus) thus I'm probably just missing some things that are obvious to more advanced users.
I was hoping that you might be willing to post a step by step guide to reverting to stock for newbies? (Explain each step, eg. I barely know what fastboot is). Or, do you know of a guide that you could point me (and others I'm sure) to?
One might ask why I rooted and modded my device when I did not understand enough of what I was undertaking to reverse the process. One would be absolutely correct in such a question! That being said, if anyone is willing to help, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Randy
Just curious why you'd want to go back to stock?

@prettyboy85712:
I do love both cyanogenmod and modaco's sense rom, but I haven't been able to connect via wifi on either for quite awhile (though normal network connection works fine). To be more specific, if I have been able to connect via wifi without the sim card in the phone, but not with it inserted.
As well, it seems like a good idea to be able to revert to stock if I did need to (stock updates, etc.) and I'd like to try wifi with stock, to see if it's the phone or the ROM. (My fault for not figuring out how to do this before I modded )
Thanks so much,
Randy
if u want to go completely back where u still receive ota (minus the locked bootloader that u can't change that its unlocked) u can download the signed secure nexus 1 Rom from modaco and then flash the boot, system, and recovery.img though fast boot go to nexus one forum and search rolling back to stock Rom it gives detailed instructions on how to do it I did it to make sure it works and was simple it is and u even get ota updates from Google hope this helps if u need any help just send me a pm good luck let us know how it goes

Rooting with Goldcard

Hello all,
I have been searching for a few answers on here but I seem to have come up short. Basically, I have a non sprint hero and would like to root it. I am not sure if I am ready to load a custom rom just yet. I mainly would like to have root to do some modification to the current version I have like getting rid of the junk I dont need (peep, footprints, ect). So far, I have successfully created a goldcard with no issue. But this is where I am getting lost. From what I gather, before i can root at this point it seems I must load some sort of basic or custom RUU to even be able to get root. Is this correct? I would like to avoid this if possible at least until I can do a nand backup. I have also attempted to root using the SDK and shell on both vista and ubuntu karmic with no luck. I guess what I am looking for is a way to root without getting rid of my current 1.5 if that is possible.
Thanks for your help in advance..
Try rooting one of these ways....

I did it the second way. No need to flash a ROM, but I would flash the recovery so you can backup your system in it's original state just incase you mess with something you shoudn't
AFAIK Theres is no way to root exactly what your running or return back to stock software after root on non sprint heros. You should be able to return to your carriers software if they release a 2.1 RUU update and your willing to lose root.
Next step for you is running the sprint RUU in this guide. Step 4
Worked flawlessly on my App Wireless phone. Good Luck if you decide to go for it.

Help Returning to Stock without PC (Vivid)

Hello, I got a vivid second hand and am trying to flash it back to stock so i can get the ICS OTA. I dont mind if I lose root, here is the situation. I got it with a custom rom (rumraider 2.3.7) so I suppose the bootloader is unlocked and its rooted. Bootloader still says S-ON by the way. Now I downloaded the PH39IMG for stock ATT firmware and placed it in my sd card, but when I boot in bootloader, i dint see it checking for update files like Android phones usually do. So it doesnt detect it. How can I fix this or is there something I overlooked?
Sorry for my ignorance, this is my first HTC with the whole bootloader locking fiasco so im kinda new on how things work here.
Or if there a CMW flashable stock rom I can download (could not find) or if someone is nice enough to upload a nandroid backup of a stock rom also, id really appreciate it. I dont have access to a PC ATM so I cant do the RUU method, im looking for a way to do it on the phone itself if possible. Thanks
Are you using the PH39.img from the super guide? Also did you put it on your external sd card and on the root of the card, not inside of any folders, etc.?

I figured out what the problem is, its not detecting my external sd card. I mixed it up with the phones internal memory. Im gonna have to see if i can pick up another one to test. Wish there was a CWM GB ROM floating around or some nandroid.

FXZing back to stock from ICS, questions I have

I was going to go completely back to stock again from a Gummy ICS rom. I was wondering if I'm going to run into any issues from having my google account linked to the phone under ICS when I actually get back onto Gingerbread.
And FXZing will remove everything right? Internal SD card, root, etc, etc. It takes it back to what it was when I got it out of the box or when they sent the phone replacement to me right?
And one more question, I'm planning on re-rooting, but not put any custom ROMs on the phone again. When and if the Bionic gets the official ICS upgrade, will I need to FXZ it again or will I be able to recieve the OTA update while rooted if I don't remove/freeze any of the stock apps?
Oh, also I have safestrap installed as well, do I need to remove that or will the FXZ get that gone as well?

There should be no issues.

Yes. FXZ is a complete wipe of the internal flash memory of the phone. New partitions are re-established. Any factory fresh phone will have recently been FXZ'd so as to be blank and free of traces of previous ownership. The only thing an FXZ will not touch is a MicroSD card, if inserted into the phone.
And one more question, I'm planning on re-rooting, but not put any custom ROMs on the phone again. When and if the Bionic gets the official ICS upgrade, will I need to FXZ it again or will I be able to recieve the OTA update while rooted if I don't remove/freeze any of the stock apps?

You are correct. As long as all bloat is intact and unfrozen, Motorola's Update.zip files will install properly.
Of note, however, is that an ICS upgrade will certainly break root so make sure that there's an ICS root method available before taking the OTA for it.
Oh, also I have safestrap installed as well, do I need to remove that or will the FXZ get that gone as well?

FXZ's scrub the entire contents of the phone. That will get removed.
Thanks. Just wanted to be sure before I did it so I didn't screw up the phone.
