I'll preface this thread by saying that I've look all over to help me remedy my problem, but I have not found anything that has resolved my issue. I've tried all the combinations of the the manual buttons to bootloader mode and download mode, and it will not work as my firmware is not the current Bell hardware burron fix (I have the old JH2 firmware, w/o the updated SPL)
What prompted this is that I was trying to reinstall the default android clock app that I deleted on accident. I had downloaded some default apps that were pulled from the Samsung Epic 4G (can't post URLs properly due to my user limitations, thread here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773142) thinking that the apks in there are the same. I tried installing but that failed. That should have been a red flag, but I wanted to have the clock app back. So what I did next is what I regret. I copied and pasted the AlarmClock.apk and AlarmClock.odex to the systems\app folder using Root Explorer. It wasn't until I rebooted my phone that this problem occurred.
I know that my phone isn't completely bricked as I can still see the battery icon when I plug it in to charge...and the phone does load the start up screen, but it won't get past that and will black out and the capacitive LED buttons (menu and back) will stay lit.
I've been diligent in backing up my information on my home computer (I'm at work now), so data loss is no problem for me. What I would really want is to fix this. My last resort is to return tot the store and get an exchange, which I really don't want to do.
Help is greatly appreciated.
you cannot install/copy (which have .odex file) apps from other firmware versions becuase the .odex is encrypted for a particular version.. if you pasted to system/app and it is a critical app from wrong version you will hang/freeze phone.. try to get into download mode and reflash the firmware..
Do you have access to the phone over adb?
Adb reboot download?

I've read about the ADB Reboot Recovery, but it mentions that my phone has to be on USB debugging mode to work, which I believe is not on =/
Is there a link where I can download to try anyways? I've searched fro it, but I'm not sure if what i searched is the right thing.
I cannot get the download mode to work as the combinations I've been using do not even register...the phone just keeps looping the Samsung Galaxy i9000M screen when I hold the buttons...like it's in perpetual reboot mode. Like I stated earlier, the hardware buttons do not seem to work. I have the old JH2 firmware that was updated from Keis that does not have the hardware button fix.

this should work if you take battery out hold down all three buttons and when you first see logo release power button for 1 sec. then repress.
also try it with and without usb plugged in.
For adb u need the android software development kit (sdk). Its available at developers.android.com. Simply run sdksetup and choose sdk tools.

I gave adb (great tool btw) a try, got it to run in command prompt, but I get an error saying device not found. Unfortunately, I did not have USB debugging mode on prior to my phone's screen blacking out on me. I should mention that I have a Bell Mobility Galaxy S I9000M, and hardware button attempts for any mode (volume up and/or down + home + power on, in a multitude of combinations, e.g. USB connected/disconnected) , be it recovery or download, have been futile as that method is not in the firmware I have one my phone. I'll have to use my last resort and get an exchange for the phone at the store I got it from. With any luck, hopefully someone who works there will have the magic touch and revive my phone. *crosses fingers*
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I'll keep them in mind to not let this happen again. Thank goodness for my constant backups instilled in me during my Windows Mobile days.
When the phone is ON firmly press volume up + home + power. It will reboot. Keep holding them! Wait a half a second after the gti9000 logo appears then let go of the power button. Keep holding volume up and home! This should boot you into recovery. Try it a few times. I found it is all in the timing of letting go of the power button.
Hope this helps!

Also, I had an i9000 in your state and even after I had it previously working with Android SDK and the Samsung USB driver (essential in Windows but not included the SDK) but after I messed up the ROM (trying to lagfix it) it stopped responding to adb commands on either OSX or Windows. Boot recovery from the aforementioned hotkey combination seemed to be the only way to fix it. But I am a n00b. I'm only passing on what I experienced.
Cheers,
Aaron

Had a similar problem after flashing a new rom, managed to egt past it by reflashing using Odin.
One of my friends has just given me his i9000 in the same state to see if I can fix it, he has been quoted $300NZ to repair!
He says he did it trying to flash a rom after successful root.
I get the galaxy splash screen but no matter how i hold and release the aforementioned keys I just dont get anything all.
ADB returns no device found and not seen by ODIN.
Tried many battery pulls, reboot + three keys and releasing/releasing-reapplying power button at various times during the splash screen. And with/without USB connected.
Pretty sure the device did have USB debugging enabled before this.
I am watching this thread closely, if I fix it I get a box of beer!
Flashed today my GT-I9000 to TO froyo I897UCJI6. I know i should not have done that now. But i really got pissed today at the gps of my phone and when i saw and update for galaxy s i just went for it, haven't checked the phone variant version. Thing is now my phone has no gps whatsoever it boots up fine but, sound only shows when i plug my headphones, accelerometer dont work correctly and so on....
So i though i`ll flash it back to stock. But the thing is once i connect the usb cable the phone just reboots and stays dead until the usb is disconnected.
I read the other threads but found no similar issues.
Here is a brief video of my problem

since i can`t post links
Anyone has any ideas how to get me back to stock?
Thanks!!
Damn i can`t even charge it!
Kinda weird indeed, try to remove the battery, wait a little, insert the battery and go to download mode (volume - / home / power) then start odin, put all files needed, and connect the usb, if it doesnt reboot hit start...
you got to enable adb debugging on your phone then open a command window and type: adb reboot download connect the usb to the phone and hit the enter key for the adb command before your phone fall asleep, then you are in download mode an can flash any rom with odin.
hope this helps, i flashed the same wrong firmware from the Vibrant.
Thanks Franklin, i tried the battery trick to no luck.
This is i cannot put my phone back to download mode because my "HOME" button is not mapped to do anything, seems like the "RETURN ARROW" button does the fuction when the system is loaded.
Any other ways to flash it back? Sd card or something?
Thanks for replies ;]
please try it my way it worked for me and i think it will work for you
I open the cmd navigate to c:\androidsdk\tools\ type in adb reboot download hit enter, it mounts daemon tools i plug in usb cable and 3 seconds later the phone goes blank and it stays unresponsive(no 3 key combination, not even the power button can turn it back on) i unplug the usb cable and the phone automaticaly shows the AT&T logo and starts up. The same happens when i plug my charger in!. Does that mean my SGS usb port is fried or something? Is there another way to flash my pnoe back to stock ROM?
I am so sorry i tried to make it better :[
Any clues?
no this is NOT a defective phone, its the result of the ROM and the 3 Button combo can´t work oh and you dont really mean deamon tools? and you musst plug the usb cable in the phone right before you hit enter or it can´t work!
I did that too. Like i said the phone turns it self off once the usb cable is attached.

dainiuxxx, this thread belongs in the Q&A section, not in development. Take a moment and read the "STOP, READ THIS BEFORE POSTING" thread at the top of both of these sections, it has clear guidelines for proper thread placement.
Sorry for that sirphukee.
Any help? Anyone?
Anyone that can help?
have you tried plugging it into another PC or Laptop?
Yup tried amothe laptop, reboot.
Wall charger, reboot.
So i`m kinda out of options?
yes, return it to the store, to get an exchange
a normal working SGS does not reboot when plugged into any USB port/charger
it's Shorted (damaged) for some reason
ok, return sounds good to me, but what will i have to say when they`ll switch on the phone and see the AT&T logo?
I`m in UK and my network is Orange UK.
Will they accept it back with no problems, i kinda doubt that....
uhh... you are in quite a pickle ...
try to remove the evidence, intentionally use a Update.zip ROM flash to kill the flash
or flash it to stock if you find a good ROM via Update.zip
use the WiFi to download the Update.zip ROM flash to the root of the internal SD to flash it.
ROM Manager can get the same results, you can WiFi install it from Market

Installed ROM manager from market, but seems it needs the phone rooted, right?
And rooting can be done only via usb cable, right?
Where do i find a Update.zip ROM via Wifi? and what are the procedures when i do find it?
OK,
so obviously the question now is HOW DO I F...k up my phone completely so no one could see what was done to it. When i`ll take it back to the shop.

you can ROOT the phone within the phone itself
by downloading Ryzaa One click lag fix from the market
instead of installing the lag fix, select the option to ROOT the phone
Same issue here. Amazing how easy it is to mess this phone up when you are really stupid. Oh well....
Tried the one click lag fix to root it, but cannot find a way to get into download or recovery mode. Tried every button combo I have seen suggested, but either gets stuck in a loop on the AT&T screen or just boots into the OS.
At the moment I feel my only option if we cannot find a way to get into download mode is to format the internal SD card and send it back to o2 (my provider), tell them it fried when Kies tried to do an update, cross my fingers and hope they send me a new one.
K so like an idiot i deleted framework-res, and now my phone turns on to a black screen. I've tried to reflash it with odin and odin 1 click, but it always gets stuck at "file analysis". I don't get why because I used odin 1 click to install froyo in the first place so I know it works.
Anyway, I have no idea what to do, as I can't get any files on or off my phone because ADP will always say the device is not connected.
if its stuck at file analysis keep fiddling until it goes past that for instance plug in into download mode with it open and then unplug and replug it in. just keep trying.
i've been trying for hours... rebooting.. reinstalling.. everything. it won't get past File Analysis...
Are you trying to use the odin 1click to flash back to jf6? That might work.

nope, still hangs at File Analysis
i have done the same and now back up i used an old odin to go back to original stock and then updated to froyo after. If you can use sdk adb reboot recovery and fromat your sd card then try odin again this worked for me
maybe try restarting computer. make sure you dont have anything adb related running. pull battery. start odin one click. put battery back in. hold vol-up and down at same time(just the vol. buttons no power) plug in usb from comp. to your phone while you still have the vol. buttons held. should be in download mode. click start.
and if you wanna try pushing a new framework, i guess you could try to boot into recovery and adb should see it then as debugging mode is auto on in recovery mode. let us know.

Are you using 64 bit Windows 7? I am and had a similar problem. On my original attempts to flash my phone with earlier versions of Cognition, I learned that if you don't disable the lagfix, you can have a problem. Assuming you used one I hope you disabled it. I also used odin 1-click at the time and it didn't work terribly well, mostly due to the voodoo lagfix ext4 filesystem.
Secondly, I've also found that it's best to go into download mode using the following method:
I do a battery pull, remove sim and sdcard (if you have one), put battery back in. Make sure your USB cable is plugged into a USB port on the motherboard, not one of those front USB ports (they sometimes don't get enough juice, you wouldn't want the device to disconnect in the middle of a flash). Hold volume up/down and plug in the USB cable. Odin one click should recognize the phone is hooked up to a COM port. At that point, you click the start button and it flashes. It should not take more than 1-2 minutes to flash. If Odin looks like it it is not working, rather it sits at Verifying or does not actually move at a brisk pace, it's not going to work. You can let it sit for hours and it will never flash. If this happens, do the battery pull and try again. My first time doing this was rather nerve wracking as i thought i bricked my phone. Had the screen with the phone/exclamation mark/computer and the computer did not detect my phone via USB. I've seen people who say reinstalling the Samsung drivers or rebooting the computer or switching USB ports might help as well.
Ever since i figured out the above, i've been able to flash my Captivate on Win 7 64bit without a hitch. Currently running the latest build of Cognition 2.2 and loving it.
I've done all of the above and Odin hangs on Verifying, ADB gives the same error message on every "ADB" command : "error: device offline: (while in recovery mode)
My computer/Odin does recognize that it's plugged in, but it won't mount and let me into the SD card or format it, etc.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yes he should.
What did you do to fix it? Do tell.
10 bucks says he succeeded once he read the directions properly.
Reading is hard, that is why so few people do it.
Same exact thing happened to to me 2 days ago. All I did was:
1)take the battery and SIM card out, wait a few seconds,
2)run Odin3 on my PC and hookup the USB cable to the phone while still off
3) hold both Volume buttons down while phone is off and connected
3)at the same time, slide in the battery with 1 finger or have someone do it
4)keep volume keys held down as the battery is installed and my phone turned on straight into download mode
5) phone pops up in Odin3 and just click Start, flashed to stock JH6
I am 80% sure I wasn't holding the power button while holding the Vol keys. If that doesn't work above ^^^ hold all 3 buttons and it should go into download mode.
so.. I fubard framework.apk trying to get teh circle battery mod on my phone (it just hung forever and *poof* black screen o' nothing after I pulled the battery)
So.. I'm following the directions but windows keeps finding the phone as some type of crazy serial device and is asking for drivers ... so I'm fux0red methinks.
Any help is appreciated - but I think I did a real number on this thing.
Ok... these are the steps I've done.
Shutdown the device.
Pulled battery, Sim, SD Card.
Popped the battery back in.... didn't power it up.
Turned on Odin3
Popped the USB cable into the phone while holding both volume buttons.
I get the lil triangle.
... then I get a windows message stating "SERIAL GADGET" and the XP wizard comes up looking for drivers. It doesnt find anything of course.
So.. I rinse and repeat and it can't find the device.
So what am I missing o wise XDA folks?

Have you searched for the drivers and installed them on your xp machine?
I'm still a noob so I'm not sure of it will help.

Get the right drivers if you havent already and find the USB port that works. Post 8 above is very good. On my netbook, only one of the three usb ports works for the captivate, i've marked it since with a happy face.
Ok.. at home now on my Win7 machine - all is good in Odin restore land...
Except - I flash using the Odin 1 Click and still boot to a black screen.
I think because I had the Voodoo lagfix on it - it won't format correctly and load the rest of the ROM onto the SDCard
So, I went to install gingerbread on my captivate, ripped from the nexus s, but I accidentally flashed the wrong thing. now my phone turns on to the att logo, then it goes away, then about 20 seconds later it comes back. I have been looking for hours on how to get to download mode, and I think that somehow I crippled my chances of using the 3 button combo. I know how to use abd to get to download mode, and my computer shows that my phone is connected when I plug it in at the att logo, but, my PC thinks its a nexus s and it can't find drivers for it. I updated my SDK but it still wont find drivers. is there anyway to install nexus s drivers or to get my phone into download mode without a jig?
Just take the battery out and plug in usb cable while holding volume up and down. (I had the same problem until someone suggested this)
that didn't do anything. if it matters, my phone wont even get to the battery charging screen with the usb cable plugged in, the spinning circle thing comes up for about 2 seconds, goes away, then comes back but its frozen the whole time, nothing else happens. My PC still sees that its plugged in, but, like I said, it thinks its a nexus s, and wont install drivers :/
PS: as to exactly what happened, I forgot to do the voodoo lagfix before trying to install the gingerbread dump from the nexus s, so I got into download mode and went back to 2.1. it was right after that when I realized that my three button combo wasnt working, so I was going to fix that by updating the bootloader, but accidentally loaded nsongs.tar instead of the tar that would fix my download mode combo, so in Odin, I had phone bootloader update checked when I flashed that

i had a successful install.....but my problem came when trying to revert to stock.
PC wouldn't recognize device and for the first time ever i couldn't get into download mode using method above or a 3 button method that worked for me (a slight variation to method stated above).
Finally the following worked:
1. open odin 1-click JF6
2. remove battery (and any external sd) from phone
3. plug phone into pc via USB (without battery in phone)
4. Hold Vol + / - toggle down simultaneously.
5. While holding the buttons down insert the battery. When i did this my phone entered DL mode almost immediately and i was able to use odin to get back to stock.
build 1007
I'd try the above method to get into DL mode.. if that doesn't work you can try the JIG and see if that works.
But a requirement before flashing was to verify that your buttons worked on your phone.
the buttons were working, but I didn't have a lagfix installed. I flashed back to stock and noticed that my buttons weren't working after that. I went to fix them but flashed nsongs.tar by accident, and I had the "phone bootloader update" box checked, so I'm thinking thats why my buttons aren't working now. I've tried that method above a couple times and nothings happened...
Hmm.. you can try and update using the Nexus S USB drivers.. if they are different from ours that is .. go to that forum and poke around to look for them.
At this point.. can't hurt trying anything.
Where would I find the nexus s drivers? I installed the samsung mobile phone drivers, but my computer still says "found new hardware - nexus s" anytime I plug in, and it shows up in device manager with a big yellow question mark.

same as the poster
when i did my install my buttons were working as well....i have the 1007 build and never had any problem getting to recovery or dl using 2-button and 3-button combo's.
After the gingerbread flash was a different story though. Luckily for me the method i posted almost like jumpstarted me into DL mode....when i did that it went into DL faster than it ever had with the normal methods....the DL screen popped up almost the instant the battery connectors hit.
yea, none of the methods I've found have gotten me into download mode. Is there anyway to get the nexus s drivers so I can do this through adb? I don't have a car so getting to radioshack to buy resistors is kinda hard :/
ok, so I updated my sdk again and it now I have the drivers installed, I can use adb now, but whenever I do, adb reboot download, it reboots, but not to download mode, i goes right back to the boot loop. I was wondering if there was anyway to push a new bootloader onto my cappy using adb. that would be awesome
Hi, I have been searching for a few days a solution to my problem, and there are solutions, but for me, they doesn't work... I mean:
1) Some forums says that I need to use the 3 buttons to enter downloader or recovery and make a wipe <- The 3 buttons are blocked on my cell phone.
2) When connecting the cell phone to the computer, Odin, Kies, ADB or any other program doesn't recognice it.
3) It isn't in debugging USB mode.
4) I have Froyo 2.2 oficial, I rooted it yesterday and I installed "Queadrant" and "Droid Wall", I set the black list and I blocked the conections of "Power AMP" (beucase I have it cracked), and also I made a LagFix ("RyanZAEXT2LagFix ALPHA 1").
Symptoms: After point (4) I shutted down the cell phone because I don't like to have calls on night, and when I tried to turn it on, it loads the Galaxy S screen and the "Movistar" logo company, but then the screen stays black and the buttons are with the white light, the phone vibrates every 10-20 seconds.
It is obviously that the solution is to get in download or recovery mode, but I can't do that... Any one knows a solution?
Thanks!
