[Q] Force locale for a specific application - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I've installed the Amazon MP3 application today, and found that it uses your phone's locale to get you to the relevant Amazon shop. Problem is, I'm using the UK locale, but I'm shopping on Amazon France...
Hence the question, is there any way to force a locale which is not the system-wide locale to be used for a specific application? Any app that would enable me to do that? Alternatively, in bash you could just type "LC_ALL=fr_FR ./script.sh" to execute a script with a different locale... It wouldn't really be that easy on Android would it?
Am on rooted JM8 by the way, in case it's relevant.
Thanks for your insight!

Grocery Shopping

I was stood in my kitchen yesterday, using Tesco's online website, searching what I needed and adding it to the shopping list. It was a relatively simple task, but could have been easier.
It gave me a few questions -
1) Do any online grocers have apps yet? (I know Ocado have one for the iPhone)
2) How hard would it be to write an app that worked through the online website?
3) How hard would it be to make an app that used the barcode scanner as an input device? I already e-mailed Tesco asking how easy would it be to include barcode search into their search results. In theory then, you scan a product your about to throw out and it could add it to your shopping list.
I'm currently e-mailing all online grocers suggesting they could win some customers by being the first to produce an Android app, the new up and coming mobile platform etc...
Just some thoughts... Has anyone else thought similar? Does anyone have any answers?
Grocery App
There is and app out alreay that does exactly what you want , it is called Grocery King. It has a barcode scanner and will add what you scan right to ur shopping list , and also allows for user defined input of items, as well as a database with quite a few items already preset for ur shopping list, I have used a cpl diff apps for shopping and thus far this one is the best I have used.

If not, it's no use to me I'm afraid.

SOLVED - changing your android market to a different country

PROBLEM SOLVED !!!
This works on my Bell Vogue, with Myn Warn Donut RLS5 on nand, to access Canada only apps such as the TD Bank app.
Get the application "market enabler" from here. I went to one of the linked download sites the author uploaded the app to.
Look up your 6 digit network code from this long list and enter it into the market enabler custom field.
Voila !
----------------------------------------------------
I am running Myn's warm donut on my Vogue here in Canada on the Bell Mobility network.
I wanted to install thhttp://code.google.com/p/market-enabler TD bank app, which is only available through the Canadian android market. I'm guessing because my ROM is based on a US carrier's ROM that I am accessing the USA android market. I can not find the TD bank app.
I tried the locale settings but English-Canada is not even an option.
I assume this issue is not limited to warm donut.
Is there a way I can get my phone to access the Canadian android market?
Thanks in advance.
the TD Bank App isn't available yet! It was on the marketplace a few days ago but it was only for a short time as it was released accidentally. I am on Bell and I saw the app using Myn's Warm Donut rom so when it is actually released you should be able to get it!
There is actually a news piece over at MobileSyrup about the TD bank app that talks about the release!

I did read several articles on it including that one. My understanding is that the app IS available now, even TD's website claims it is. What the articles said was that TD in error released their app to the global android market. When they realised this, they quickly withdrew it from the global market, and made it available only on the Canadian android market.
That is why several non-Canadian sites became aware of it, and likely how you briefly saw it using your Myn's warm donut ROM, until it was quickly withdrawn from the global market.
Here's the scoop from androidspin. com
The mystery of the vanishing app has been solved. To refresh, yesterday’s market-fresh apps post included a pretty nice looking app for TD Bank of Canada. An astute reader pointed out the app was now missing, so I put detective Matthew Cram of corporate and public affairs of TD Bank on the case. His answer is elementary:
The TD mobile app for Android is only available via the Canadian Android Market. There was a brief (one hour) window last week where our Android mobile app was mistakenly made available globally. I assume that’s when you saw it?
We hope to have a U.S. version of the TD mobile app for Android ready by late summer.
Cheers,
Matthew Cram

So anyone north of the border should still be able to find the TD app in their market, and it looks like us Americans will have a TD app of our own in a few months. Case closed!
installed the warm espresso theme and then a lot more regions were available in local settings !?
selected english canada, but still the us market
rebooted - still the us market - no td bank app
(I am in Canada on Bell)
anyone know how to change app market country?
Looking forward to this being figured out. I have myn's warm donut rls 5, wish i could get that TD app.
boing - er bump !
You are the man!, worked like a charm in Central America, thank you very much
Ive been looking for this for months!!! works great, in canada, on vogue, bell network

Changing you country in the root code
Does anyone know how to do this, i'm trying to use the Market Enabler but it is not working. my code is listed as china and i,m in the US HELP please.
Thanks for this advice, but the linked-to list doesn't show 6-digit codes. I see a 3-digit MMC and a 2-digit MNC. What 6-digit code are you referring to here?
Thanks

We got a problem Hustom
Hi team,
I have a Galaxy S3 GT-I9300, Romanian SIM card, operator Orange.
Device is not rooted.
I Launch Market Enabler > Set Custom tab > and input the MNC and MCC for Italy, operator TIM (22201) > Set to this values
If I go to Settings List tab > long press [it]TIM > select fake this provider now, it is still showing "we got a problem Houston"
I tried with original SIM card in and out of the phone, and different combinations.
Why is it now working? what am I missing? (brains, i know.)
Thank you in advance,
Dan

[Q] Multi Touch Keyboard Stealing Personal Info?

Hi guys. This is my first post! I recently created an account with XDA becasue i LOVE the work and information i get and how everyone gives each other a hand Hope this hasn't been posted befrore!... I recently downloaded the droid x multi touch keyboard on my evo. When i installed a message came up saying that the app can store passwords and credit card numbers Has anyone had any issues with this? Is this really an issue? I currently use it for texting and convert to stock keyboard when inputing personal information. I would like to use my new keyboard comfortably. Thanks!
That happens when you install any keyboard, its a precaution in android itself, because android doesnt know whether its the well known, trusted multi touch keyboard, or a keyboard filled with virus. You could install a keyboard made by google, and it would still say that.

[Q] Help for an App Developer

Hello XDA'rs,
I work for the developer Loud Crow Interactive Inc. and we build book apps for kids.
We've recently launched into the Android Market and are having trouble with our app being installed on rooted nook colors. The issues appear to be on the licensing side.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what this could be? Also, what does a rooted nook register as (device) on the Android Market place,
Thanks in advance,
Tom
What's the error, logcat ?, what's the app?
dude u gotta give some info if need a solution.
There could be a million things that could cause problems like that.

We are all waiting for an answer. I have an outstanding request in with Google that I have had to update several times as they seem to be dancing around the question. When and if I hear I will post a response.
The App is "The Going to Bed Book" or "PopOut! The Tale of Peter Rabbit" - Our users are getting a "Invalid License" error. We're going to root one of our nooks soon to do some testing, but until then we were thinking we might be able to get something from the forums. Both users who reported the issue were running CM7, which I also run on my HTC IS, and runs our apps fine. Thus we're thinking it could have something to do with the device ID running against the licenses?
As we set up restrictions by device, We were curious what a rooted NC running CM7 would show as in terms of a device on the Android Market place?
Thanks for the help guys, and thanks for the patience. I'm not the actual Android developer on the team. He's out of the office for the week,
Cheers,
Tom
I think he means he is having trouble getting the application to install from the market in general. I looked up the applications and the NC was not a supported device.
I don't want to pay the money to download it to my phone and sideload it (I'm at work anyways). I don't know much about applications and how devices are determined to be compatible other than maybe their permissions. However, these applications (there are two on the market), don't require anything other than SD access.

That might be part of some of this. I was not aware developers were setting restrictions by device. Is this new?
model name -NookColor
product name -encore
And there is really no way to find out the problem, without looking at the logcat.

No, this feature is available to every developer since a long time. but there are 600 or so devices so not a lot of people bother with it.

Actually, questions to the market run against your account and the email info and log the following device details:
> IIILanguage: en
> IssueType: market_website
> Language: en
> android_app_name: Facebook
> android_os: gingerbread
> android_os_other:
> device_manufacturer: other
> device_manufacturer_other: Barnes & Noble
> hidden_country: US
> website_issue_select: grayed_device
device_manufacturer= bn
If u want to know more take a look at build.prop, people have uploaded it in netflix thread, which reminds me that a lot of users usually change their device and fake it to run different apps.

Those were direct quotes from what Google's filters picked up when I sent an email while logged in to the market.
Thanks guys, this will be a good start. If and when we resolve the issue I'll be sure to post an update with the details. I really wish Android Market supported promo codes; we'd love to be able to throw out some free copies for you guys to have a look at and test for these one off issues.
Thanks Again!
I assume if you sideload the .apk it will install fine?
Just want to contribute that I have the Going to Bed Book installed and running fine on my Nook. I am still running CM7 7.1RC, and have my build.prop spoofed for Netflix (no longer required, but I never changed it back and haven't flashed a new CM7 in a while). The only change I made in build.prop was setting the manufacturer to HTC.
The book runs great and is my son's new favorite app.
You may have an issue using get.DeviceID()... have one of your users use my IMEI generator and see if it fixes their problem. They can also spoof Manufacture, Device and Model with the newest version.
IMEI Generator Thread.
I have it on my CM7 (7.0.3 to lazy to update, running off sd no changes to build.prop) Nook and it works fine. My daughter loves it.
Some of the pages are kind of hard to register a turn, and it always starts upsidedown then flips itself over. But both of those things are the same on my incredible 2 as well.

[Q] Anyone using the Android Kindle app on the Touch?

I wanted to use the Kindle app on my Touch (heresy, I know), and it works well.... except for a single issue.
I can't search a book. Using the search utility on the Kindle app brings up nothing. No problems searching in Aldiko or the B&N native reader. Just wondering if I'm missing something blatantly obvious or if it's hosed to begin with.
I can confirm the issue, searching in a book doesn't return any results. :-(
cceerrtt:
I was sooooooooooooo hoping it was just me. Without the ability to search for passages, I can't use it.
No worries. Quite a few other readers.
Thanks again for the reply.
Here's a question for everyone, too: is it possible to run the native Kindle Fire application on the Nook?
There are a lot of free titles available on Kindle that are not available on Nook. Heresy is appreciated when it is practical
I am also having the search problem. I tried updating the Kindle app through Google Market, but it won't update. The latest version in the market is 3.3.2. When I uninstall the Kindle app and reinstall through the market, it seems to install version 3.2.0.35. Has anyone been able to install 3.3.2?
So apparently the latest version 3.3+ you need to have android 2.2 or higher. Since the nook is only 2.1 the latest version you can install is 3.2
I have not tried searching but it seems that scrolling through larger titles (newspapers etc) with articles does not work. It is hard to say exactly how it should work but turning pages using a right to left swipe works perfectly fine. Scrolling through a vertical list of articles using a up to down swipe does not work at all. This makes newpapers really difficult to read on the nook since you have to many skip through each article.
Dictionaries seem to work the same as anywhere else which for foreign language reading is fantastic

Similar questions came up recently in two other threads. Paraphrased answers from these threads: You could either modify the key mappings statically in /system/usr/keylayout/TWL4030_Keypad.kl and reboot. Or, for dynamic app-dependent button mappings, you could attempt porting Buttonmap over from the PRS-T1.
