[Q] captivate froyo 2.2 question - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do you have to root your captivate use the odin?

No. You just have to put it in download mode and flash.

how do you put it in download mode?

If you're lucky this will work:
1.OPEN ODIN FIRST
2. Turn off your phone
3. Plug in the usb cable to the computer, not the phone
4. Hold down both volume buttons and plug in the usb cable to the phone
5. If you get a yellow triangle and an android with a shovel, then click start. If you get a battery, then close odin and unplug and come back and tell me.
6. If you got the triangle in step 5, then just wait about 15 minutes after clicking start, until the box in the top left turns green and says "pass". Then you'll have froyo.

i did it all and nothing happened it just stayed on the download screen

OK Can you load Cognition over the 2.2 Beta or should we go back to JH6,,,,or from JH7
I noticed therer are a lot more "windows" in the Odin Cognition DL What do you do with them PDA/Phone etc and the corresponding files.

You can just flash it over. You click on the "pda" button and select the pda.tar file you downloaded and the same with the phone and csc and pit

Is the start button way at the bottom of the window? If it is, that one will get you the stock rom. Theres an ODIN that has options such as PDA, PHONE, CNC, etc. Thats the one you want

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797282 this is the one for Froyo. Make sure Odin is started before you plug in your phone and go into download mode. Also, are you on Stock 2.1 with no mods, if you have made modes to your phone you must flash stock first with this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989. Then flash the Odin 3 with Froyo. If you have a lagfix installed I siggest you do a master clear because Odin dosen't like lagfix's, that could be causing your issue. Bakcup everything from your internal sd before doing master clear because everything will be wiped.

That will take you back to 2.1 JF6 you'd have to use I897UCJH7 - OTA System, Kernel, Modem - Clockwork Flashable - Rooted to get back to JH7 or 2.1.1.
Or you can always use the one click to go back to JF6 and then use Kies Mini to get to KB1 which would be the newest stock.

Indeed... But either way, as long as it's not rooted, it should be acceptable I would assume.
I would just flash back to Eclair 2.1 (I897UCJF6) with Odin one click, leave it as is and hand it over to them. I don't think they are concerned about it being up to date or anything. I would just try to ensure that you don't flash to a ROM that is rooted.
I'm not sure how in-depth they inspect the devices when trading in for a newer device and what not so, which ever works I suppose.
Prior to sending back they ask what fw - I think you have to be on KB1 when you're sending back.
They just asked me today if I'm on KB1 as they assume that fixes most of the issues.
So got to odin to stock, then kies to KB1...

that's the way I understand it...but I haven't ever used Odin, I use Heimdall.
I went from the OTA Eclair update version to the package above... first boot was torture... there were a couple of glitches. Quickoffice needed a reinstall of the .apk to fix a broken Icon and my about phone said firmware unknown until after my second boot. other than that it was smooth sailing to a battery draining life of Froyo.
Hmm, heimdall or odin(3?)
basically I have a captivate, i had used ryan's oneclicklagfix (which included going into 'download mode' (3 button press) and switching the 'rom' and then rebooting and such. even with the uninstaller, i'm not sure (i likely didn't) get rid of the base rom that i changed.
so in order to put on froyo, i think i should flash back using heimdall or odin (which is easier/less likely to screw up) rather than just going with kies/minikies froyo update.
then use minikies/kies to update up to current.
any reason not to (besides a bunch of people with froyo errors?

Here's a full set of instructions on how to get it ready to go back:
***Edit, If you're running a modded ROM that has a lagfix, disable it
Flash to Stock JF6:
1. Download Odin One Click from: http://www.mediafire.com/?0w2y31maz8mdom4
2. Download your Windows Drivers (If you don't already have them)from:
Windows 64bit: http://www.mediafire.com/?3dh4d6up72me9re
Windows 32bit: http://www.mediafire.com/?0b45zo7o75rc5d5
3. Make sure your USB cable is connected directly to the back of your computer, not a USB hub or to a front connection and all of your drivers have been properly installed
4. Do not connect your USB cable yet.
5. On your phone, go to ; Settings/Applications/Development/and check “USB Debugging”
6. Turn your phone off
7. Remove your SIM card and Micro SD if you have one
8. Open Odin One Click
9. On your phone, press and hold the Volume up and the Volume down buttons. Do not touch the power button. If you have a ROM that supports a extended power menu, just press and hold the power button until the extended power menu comes up
10. While holding them, or after you select DOWNLOAD mode, insert your USB cable, wait for a couple of seconds and a yellow triangle with the Android figure will show up
11. You’ll see in Odin, that your phone has been discovered
12. Press “Start”
13. ***VERY IMPORTANT*** Do Not mess with your phone at all. If you lose your USB connection, you could brick your device, and will possibly have to make a jig
14. When it is done, your phone will reboot and Odin will display “Removed”
15. Unplug your USB cable from your phone
16. If you are proceeding to Master clear, you must close Odin BEFORE Master Clear
Master Clear:
1. Ensure you have backed up all of your information onto your Micro SD or your desktop BEFORE doing this. IT WILL ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR INTERNAL SD!!
2. Make sure to remove your SIM and Micro SD if you have one
3. With your USB cable disconnected from your phone, open Odin One Click
4. On your phone, go to: Settings/Applications/Development/and check “USB Debugging”
5. Connect your USB cable to your phone
6. You’ll see in Odin, that your phone has been discovered
7. Click “Master Clear”
8. When the Master Clear has completed, your phone will reboot.
9. The phone is now as it was when it came from the factory

I upgraded from 2.2 to 2.3. But the system seemed unstable. So I decided to downgraded it to 2.1, by using the "one click odin", but it has been unrooted. I tried everything but couldn't root the system, thus I decided to directly flash the kernel. When it freezed, I unpluged the USB and then it happened.
Do I still have the change to save it?

Michael, check the build number of your phone (look at the sticker that lives under the phone's battery). If it's anything past 1010 (and in some cases, 1008), ODIN 1-Click will not work. You'll need to find and download ODIN3 and the proper .PDA and .PIT files.
You will, however, still need ODIN 1-click to do a Master Clear of the phone, so don't get rid of it.

Well... I use this "I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0" to downgrade it, is this the odin one click?
After the captivate was unrooted, I could do nothing to root it again. Although after reinstall packages, I saw the "superxxxx"(sorry forgot the name), I still couldn't install apps from third-party.
I followed the video in this thread "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978150" completely to flash my cell, I didn't understand why he told to replace a .tar with a .zip, so I was totally lost, but it worked.

galaxy tab sgh-t849 I need professional help

I just got this tab and like every other android i get I rooted it. I used superoneclick -- worked fine. then downloaded cwm and flashed the recovery. of course when i went into recovery it was 3e so i couldnt actually use cwr without the bypass fix. Anyway -- i used some recovery fix -- which i think was for a vibrant -- wasn't thinking. Once it rebooted into recovery it showed some yellow letters then went blank. The computer still recognizes it but the tab won't boot. i can reset it by turning it off and on but it only shows tmobile splash and the yellow letters scrolling in recovery then goes blank again. please help. i've been reading everything but no one seems to have had this problem.
thank you very much

i figured there would be some manual way to reflash the recovery or maybe complete firmware with a recovery built in. it will still go into download mode -- like i said the computer still recognizes it but I just don't know where to start. ive never used odin and not a pro at adb/sdk but i can usually follow directions pretty well. i've rooted g1's, mytouch 3g fenders slides, inspires, atrix, vibrant, captivates so i'm not giving up yet. i know someone is willing to help.
from the off position, when you press and hold volume down then a moment later without letting up from volume down also hold power button until lights turn on, what does it do?
download all below zips, and unzip them
run it usb driver. say yes to everything. plug in tab to computer in download mode. let it install tab drivers
unplug tab.
open odin
Watch the first box on the left. ID:COM
plug in tab to comp in download mode.
That box should light up yellow, that means your tab in connected and ready to go.
place unzipped stock rom in PDA.
Press Start.
When done it should say all threads completed, and your tab should restart on its own.
Let it boot, and welcome back to stock Tmobile
uploads are taking a bit, be patient.
Do you want stock 2.2, or 2.3?
yes -- it goes into download mode
sounds promising -- thank you -- i will keep you updated on the progress.

I don't think so - as long as you can get to download mode and get the computer to see your phone, there aren't many things that ODIN/Heimdall can't correct.

Do I need to repartition when I flash from THS to stock 2.1?
I'm stuck in the Pone!PC thing no DL mode
I believe you do need to repartition, as the ICS builds use an MTD file scheme, and rewriting that would be part of the process.
The Phone--/!\--PC screen should work the same as download mode.
And, as b-eock mentioned above, make sure you're running Odin as an administrator.
Its setting up the connection... still doing it...OMG MAN WHATS WRONG WITH THIS THING. I cannot lose this phone, this will have been my third Cappy.

Have you tried Heimdall? Sometimes where Odin fails, Heimdall will work.

Nope. Look in the one-clicks thread in the development section for a Heimdall one-click. It will set itself up on your Windows machine and do all the same flashing stuff that Odin can do.

Found it I'm working on it now
Its giving me the error that the msvcp100 is missing even though i installed the microsoft thing it asks for
Is it safe to say that I'm pretty much screwed and take it to an ATT store and say this happened while I was upgrading to gingerbread?
I tried a GB one-click and now a puple screen? WTF is going on!
Have you rebooted the computer since running the installation? Try that first. Sometimes a reboot will pick up the changes you've made.
By the way, with Heimdall you'll need to pay attention to what USB port you have the phone plugged into. Heimdall associates itself with one port at a time (the port the phone was attached to when you ran the installer).
HOLY CRAP!!!! that GB one click gave me download mode back
But its not accepting anything, it connects to the computer but then sits at setup_connection
OK it looks like its gonna work!!!!!!!!!!!
Which heimdall package did you grab?

Heimdall saved me a couple of times but remember that, since it uses a different set of usb drivers, you may end up with some difficulty with Odin later on due to the different drivers.
If Heimdall does work and you computer has difficulty with Odin, Apex makes a Heimdall package with CWM so you can go from there. I am back on Slim ICS now.

I didnt use heimdall i couldnt get it to work and now its just got a big blue screen... i think my phone is toast now
Try Heimdall one more time, but this time, grab one of the bootloader packages. It sounds like there's a mismatch between your bootloaders and your rom (e.g. froyo bootloaders and gb rom).

Could use serious help *SOFT BRICK*

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 ATT LTE version SGH-i957
So I think I made a boo boo... My friend told me about rooting the device and getting ICS on it a long time ago, so I successfully did that and ran it for over a year... But I wanted to sell it so I did a factory reset. Everytime I reset it would be blank and I would have to choose a recovery backup from CWM. So I did that, but it kept recovering my stuff and what not. So I deleted the backups. Well now that I did that I have nothing but CWM only... And I try connecting it to the computer b/c I know if I can just get the stock image I downloaded on it I'll be good. However, it doesn't install the driver for MTP. I do see it showing as Samsung ADB Android Device but I have tried everything I know and then some to get it to recognize to the computer but I can't. I have one stock image in md5 I tried doing through Odin, then I have two others that are boot.img with the directories. Is there any other way to get the zips on the tablet so I can install through CWM? Or am I just done? thanks!

Yep, it's recognizing it. Just flash the gb or ics stock firmware, .tar.md5 file. You can get it at sammobile.com. It's a zip file. Use 7-zip to extract the.tar.md5 file

yeah I tried that and it failed. i got the md5 from sammobile and put it in the PDA slot and Started. 3 seconds later it fails. But right now I need to get the thing on again. I took the back off looking for any SD card, guess its built in. But now its not coming on. Yeah! I'll get it back on and maybe you can help me from there. Thanks!

Try different usb ports, use the ones in the back of the pc. I have an i957 too and have used odin a number of times on it. Sometimes it's taken a few tries before its worked.

Ok I will try that. I've been using the same one. Am I using Odin right? I'm using 1.85, then I mount the md5 in the PDA section and hit Start???

Yes, you're using Odin correctly. Only have auto-reboot and f.reset checked in Odin

That's not good. Have you tried to adb push a rom onto the device in recovery. I'm not sure what path to push it to as I don't have my tab with me right now
WAIT! Hold the phone... I wiggled the cable a bit and I think Odin is pushing it... ahhh! I'll let you know. Thanks so much for getting me this far.
THANK YOU! It worked. I am back to...GB yuck! No I knew that's what I was loading. Thank you sooooo much!
