Take a look at the Captivate Connection Issues thread. There are some things you can try in there to hopefully get you back on track.

I don't think so - as long as you can get to download mode and get the computer to see your phone, there aren't many things that ODIN/Heimdall can't correct.

Do I need to repartition when I flash from THS to stock 2.1?
I'm stuck in the Pone!PC thing no DL mode
I believe you do need to repartition, as the ICS builds use an MTD file scheme, and rewriting that would be part of the process.
The Phone--/!\--PC screen should work the same as download mode.
And, as b-eock mentioned above, make sure you're running Odin as an administrator.
Its setting up the connection... still doing it...OMG MAN WHATS WRONG WITH THIS THING. I cannot lose this phone, this will have been my third Cappy.

Nope. Look in the one-clicks thread in the development section for a Heimdall one-click. It will set itself up on your Windows machine and do all the same flashing stuff that Odin can do.

Is it safe to say that I'm pretty much screwed and take it to an ATT store and say this happened while I was upgrading to gingerbread?
I tried a GB one-click and now a puple screen? WTF is going on!
Have you rebooted the computer since running the installation? Try that first. Sometimes a reboot will pick up the changes you've made.
By the way, with Heimdall you'll need to pay attention to what USB port you have the phone plugged into. Heimdall associates itself with one port at a time (the port the phone was attached to when you ran the installer).
HOLY CRAP!!!! that GB one click gave me download mode back
But its not accepting anything, it connects to the computer but then sits at setup_connection
OK it looks like its gonna work!!!!!!!!!!!

Heimdall saved me a couple of times but remember that, since it uses a different set of usb drivers, you may end up with some difficulty with Odin later on due to the different drivers.
If Heimdall does work and you computer has difficulty with Odin, Apex makes a Heimdall package with CWM so you can go from there. I am back on Slim ICS now.

Try Heimdall one more time, but this time, grab one of the bootloader packages. It sounds like there's a mismatch between your bootloaders and your rom (e.g. froyo bootloaders and gb rom).

So I got my jig and got into download... Now what. When I connect to AIO it says I need to enable usb, really how! Odin - start... Nothing. Odin - Master Clear... Nothing
Start odin first, then connect your phone. If nothing happens, try connecting it to a different usb port (one on the motherboard, at the back of your computer). If still nothing happens, chances are you don't have the proper drivers installed.
ok slow down, first off with AIO you DONT need download mode, you use it with your phone turned on normally and USB DEBUGGING on. the instructions are in AIO. read instructions, thats what they are there for.
also you dont need a jig unless the phone is bricked, there is the button method AND AIO uses ADB commands to AUTOMATICALLY put your phone into donwload when needed. and its only needed when using ODIN, some people need to open odin first, some not, but odin is the only time you use download mode.

Wish this were the case. I've been using this LAPTOP for several months. Just flashed a new rom to my sons Cappy. No this systems all go, its my Cappy that's no show
When you plug the phone in and download mode starts, does the COM show up on Odin? If it does, you're good to go otherwise you need to get different drivers or maybe try using a different USB port or restart the laptop.

Wild.. wonder if you just have a bad cable or failing usb port or something..
I had this happened last night. Just finally worked about about 5 or more times. Just took some patience and constantly trying multiple ways with different ports. Although I have never had this problem before. Usually only took a maximum 2 tries.

I have a question about the Odin3 program used to restore phone. I have followed this thread and done all of the things it says and I can not get the application to work. I have downloaded the drivers and done this step by step and I must be doing something wrong. I have no idea what to do. I have removed the sd card and the sim card, put the phone into downliad mode by method 2. After I click start on the program, I get to the file analysis part and then the program just sits there. I have waited for 45 minutes and nothing.
Please help! I flash cognition 4.3.2 over perception build 9.5 and now my phone will not turn on. It is stuck in a loop between the cognition start up screen and then goes to recovery and then keeps cycling. What should i do? Thanks in advance!!!
odin sometimes locks up. try again. the only real Problem that can really happen with ODIN is that it doesnt see your phone.
try rebooting your computer. force closing odin didnt help the person i helped before,
When I plug the phone into the computer, it says added on the Odin program. Is this correct? I have never used the Odin program before. After added, it says Odin v3, then it goes to file analysis....... It never leaves this point. Where can I find more information on this topic. Cant get to a restore point either, think I am in trouble!!!!!

the versioning on the one click has nothing to do with the versioning on the full ODIN.....

Build code?
I have an issue, I was updating my Captivate to 2.2 with Odin3 One Click and that worked fine, then for some reason I cannot explain I tried to use Odin to upgrade to 2.3 (the blow fish one) flashed the image then got the restart with the blowfish and then used Odin to complete the process as per the instructions and got soft brick, I fixed this with the one click unbrick, then it went into a boot loop.
The loop is AT&T screen then fuzzy colours and a restart (like a graphics card has gone haywire).
I can get into the download mode by removing the battery, plugging the USB cable in holding the volume buttons then installing the battery the download mode appears but Odin is not picking up the phone.
When it is in the loop I can get Odin to identify the phone but when I try to go into download mode it won’t identify it. I have tried with adb and it does the same thing.
Any suggestions? I have looked at the forums for a long while so my apologies if this has already been covered.
Have you installed the necessary drivers on your computer?

You may want to also take a look at the "Captivate Connection Issues" thread - it has some steps to help get you connected in download mode.
Once you have it connected, you can probably safely flash a Gingerbread stock rom to get back to a clean place to start flashing from.
Hi,
Yes forgot to mention that I have installed the correct USB drivers, Odin picks up the phone during the loop so that tells me that the Cable is fine and the drivers are working. I will try to re-install them just to be safe.
Thanks I will look through the connection issues threads and see if that helps, I am at work at the moment so will be later in the day.
The garbled bootscreen happens when you try to run gingerbread with froyo bootloaders. You must have chosen a bootloader free package. Instead, for your first time flashing to GB (and first time only), use a package with bootloaders

What is this blow fish one that you speak of? Korockinout13 is correct that you are getting the garbled screen because of an incorrect bootloader. You may be having issues because the ROM you flashed might be an i9000 based ROM and you will need different drivers.
DISCLAIMER: It's still earlier early and I haven't had all my coffee yet. Please correct my logic if it is wrong.

I believe the blowfish one he's referring to is the Fugu Root method.
About One-Click UnBrick
This Software:
Will work on all Samsung devices which use Odin3
Is a single, portable executable
Is the first one-click anything for our devices on Linux
Works on Mac
Works on Windows

Is programmed in Java
Deploys and installs Heimdall for your OS

The bolded line is why ODIN no longer detects your phone. The Heimdall driver has been installed. You can either go grab a Heimdall one click from here or remove the Heimdall driver (trying another USB port may work) and then try using ODIN again.
Yes it was the Fugu Root's one and I didnt update to a Gingerbread bootloader before I flased it onto my phone.
Thank you for all your help, I will never mess around with my phone at 2am again.
I managed to get Odin to pick up the phone and was able to re-load FROYO and will start again.
Do Apex ROM Heimdall one-click flash with bootloaders enabled. Most painless process.
I have a Samsung Captivate which has been rooted and unlocked...it was running 2.3.5 uckk4

Make sure you're using a usb port that is on the motherboard (back of computer). Before you plug in your phone to flash, set up Odin first. Put all the files you are going to flash in the right places. After Odin is fully set up, plug in the usb to the back of your computer, then to you phone. Make sure you are in download mode. If the usb still isn't working, try a different USB port that is on the back of the computer. Connecting the usb to the back of the pc is very important. Odin doesn't recognize my phone when it's plugged in the front, when the phone is in download mode. Only the back usb ports.
If Odin still doesn't recognize the phone, try a different USB cable. But do everything else the exact same way as I described.
Also make sure you fully setup Odin before you plug your phone in to the usb.

You probably have mismatch kernel and bootloader loader. Maybe you can try to wipe data / factory reset in recovery.

If you continue to go into a bootloop then I recommend a USB jig for the galaxy s series. I had had that happen before, Nothing worked, couldnt get it into download mode, couldnt get into recovery, Until I got the USB jig, Fixed my problem right away, and I flashed back to stock. The USB jig is only 6 bucks on ebay. Ill link you if you are interested.

noob advice
I'm a noob, so this comment might just serve to show how little I know, but whenever I find myself in a bootloop situation, I've noticed that the problem starts with the initial attempt of installing a rom via a kernel with an older version of CWM. During the post-install boot sequence, I'll see the AT&T splash screen, a CWM screen with script running, and then a reboot. Usually, accessing the CWM (now on a higher version) and reinstalling the rom will get it working. Not quite kernel / bootloader mismatch, but close.

So I think I made a boo boo... My friend told me about rooting the device and getting ICS on it a long time ago, so I successfully did that and ran it for over a year... But I wanted to sell it so I did a factory reset. Everytime I reset it would be blank and I would have to choose a recovery backup from CWM. So I did that, but it kept recovering my stuff and what not. So I deleted the backups. Well now that I did that I have nothing but CWM only... And I try connecting it to the computer b/c I know if I can just get the stock image I downloaded on it I'll be good. However, it doesn't install the driver for MTP. I do see it showing as Samsung ADB Android Device but I have tried everything I know and then some to get it to recognize to the computer but I can't. I have one stock image in md5 I tried doing through Odin, then I have two others that are boot.img with the directories. Is there any other way to get the zips on the tablet so I can install through CWM? Or am I just done? thanks!
