[Q] So I got my jig and got into download - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I got my jig and got into download... Now what. When I connect to AIO it says I need to enable usb, really how! Odin - start... Nothing. Odin - Master Clear... Nothing

Start odin first, then connect your phone. If nothing happens, try connecting it to a different usb port (one on the motherboard, at the back of your computer). If still nothing happens, chances are you don't have the proper drivers installed.

ok slow down, first off with AIO you DONT need download mode, you use it with your phone turned on normally and USB DEBUGGING on. the instructions are in AIO. read instructions, thats what they are there for.
also you dont need a jig unless the phone is bricked, there is the button method AND AIO uses ADB commands to AUTOMATICALLY put your phone into donwload when needed. and its only needed when using ODIN, some people need to open odin first, some not, but odin is the only time you use download mode.

Wish this were the case. I've been using this LAPTOP for several months. Just flashed a new rom to my sons Cappy. No this systems all go, its my Cappy that's no show

When you plug the phone in and download mode starts, does the COM show up on Odin? If it does, you're good to go otherwise you need to get different drivers or maybe try using a different USB port or restart the laptop.

Wild.. wonder if you just have a bad cable or failing usb port or something..

I had this happened last night. Just finally worked about about 5 or more times. Just took some patience and constantly trying multiple ways with different ports. Although I have never had this problem before. Usually only took a maximum 2 tries.

Remember that ODIN is made by Samsung, so it's buggy as all hell

WTF am I doing wrong?????

I am trying to flash a ROM, but I simply can't get ODIN to work properly. I've used ODIN 1-click and the other ODIN and both get stuck - the 1-Click gets stuck on file analysis and in other ODIN version got stuck on Initialization (two steps AFTER file analysis). It freezes either way... and YES, I did get the Com port assignment; all USB drivers are loaded/installed.
Needless to say, my phone now reboots with the stupid Phone + Triangle + Computer thing...
I can still get to Download Mode but I'm a bit confused as to where to go from here. Should I use a different computer or try a different method or what? Based on the research I've done, this should have just taken off and worked, no issues....
The phone was a bone stock flash (although rooted) and I was following the steps outlined in Connexion's video.
HELP!
Well, your first problem is you posted this in development instead of Q&A.
But in all seriousness, make sure you start the odin 1 click BEFORE connecting the phone. If you start it after it will get stuck in file analysis.
Hopefully this helps.
Same thing happened to me. I flash serendity and tried to update and odin was just stuck. But I did a reset with the three button fix...that seemed o work.

IIRC, It was open before starting plugging the phone in. Does it matter which ODIN I use?
You could try bay_wolf's AIO Captivate Toolbox thats linked in my signature.
Wrong section buddy! You'll get less flaming and more help in Q&A.
Have you opened Odin before putting the phone in Download? Also, this post by nbs11 might help you along a bit
Also, run odin as administrator.

Yeah, I do this along with a few other precautions: ensuring that I run 1-click as an administrator (right click, run as administrator), ensuring that the proper USB drivers are installed (the one from the 1-click thread).
If it doesn't work, try another USB port.
Sorry about the wrong area - I just panicked I think.
I just tried it again and this time it hung up on "Setup Connection".
Very odd.
I'm going to try it on my laptop and see what happens...
make sure you plug the usb cable into a usb port on the motherboard. front panel usb ports can play hell with odin.

That could also be my problem.
However, I loaded everything onto my laptop (also running Win7 64bit) and it went through with NO issues... The flash back to stock that is....
I think I'm gonna use the laptop from here on out - Both of my desktops have given me problems with Odin.

next time try this: with the phone powered off and odin running, hold both volume buttons down while plugging the cable in. again, odin can be a b*tch sometimes.
glad ta hear ya got it to flash.
Try: 1st open Odin, 2nd add pit and tar, 3rd battery out then install battery while holding both volume keys, usb to phone.

Right ...like RPICASO said.... is pretty much what I was getting at.
Holding the buttons down while plugging in the usb will start the phone up into download mode and be connected properly.

Well, after the ODIN mishap and then switching to my laptop - Everything else went very smoothly, just as outlined in the video.
I installed Andromeda 1.1 and it looks really nice!
Thanks again for the quick help/responses - I REALLY appreciate it.

Seems to be - Right out of the box I'm impressed - It just has a rock solid feel to it.
I was also VERY impressed that I walked outside and opened Maps and was INSTANTLY locked onto GPS - Whereas this afternoon I tried the same thing on the stock JH7 2.1 and didn't get a lock EVER.
WOOTTTT!!!!!
One quick general question - I backed up using Ti-Ba before I flashed. My apps are restored, but all of my settings (email, background, icons, usernames/pass) seem to be missing. In Ti-Ba I used "Restore missing apps with data". It did restore the apps, but the details seem to be missing. Should I have used a different restore option (or can I use one now)?
THANKS AGAIN!!! I'll give some feedback tomorrow; for now, time for sleep.

EDIT:
odin crashed while going back to stock then
my phone will get to download mode buuuuut.. my computer doesnt recognize my phone...
i re-downloaded drivers and the phone is recognized however odin failed the 2 times i got it in dl mode(took about an hour to get it each time)... so i have a jig ordered but with odin not working im not feeling optimistic
nothing seems to happen when its plugged into the wall no battery icon. i reinstalled drivers hoping that would help with no luck.. i just got it back in dl mode after like an hour of it not turning on for me but it doesnt do anything once i get it there.
Get odin3 one click and use it in dl mode. It will brg ur phone back to stock

definately problem of bad USB..either cable or port....try using different USB cable or different computer....Use full odin by iCezar...its with minimum risk....specially very beneficial in cases like yours....
my pc doesnt see my phone. thats the issue i cant use odin. and the only thing my phone will do is glow black or go to download mode, idk if its charging but its getting hard to get it in dl mode, multiple tries atm no luck
i have already tried reinstalling the drivers. what are they called so i can delete them and install again rather then just redownload maybe that will help?

try connecting your phone to pc when odin is already running. See whether it detects. Mine worked this way.

thats not a big deal, just get it in download mode, and flash it with odin.
EDIT: might as well us this post to say what my computer says with usb since i got in in dl mode again...
USB device not recognized
one of the usb devices attached to this computer has
malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it.
then something about for assistance in solving this issue click here
this has happened to me acouple times, the first was my fault I pull the usb before odin finished. I could get back into Download mode but Odin would not see the phone and computer would not recognize the phone either, device not recognized.
I tried rebooting, re-installing drivers etc. did not work.
but after an hour or so I finally got it to recognize and odin'd back to stock and back to flashing I was.
this is what I did hope it works for you.
1. disconnect all usb devices
2. un-install captivate drivers
3. reboot computer
4. goto device manager and verify that there is no USB device errors, if there is delete them and reboot again verify again in device manager.
5. install captivate drivers
6. reboot computer
7. start ODIN (DG or iCezars, iCezars is safer)
8. plug USB cable into the computer first (the one that came with the phone not an after market one)
9. hold both up and down volume buttons on the phone
10. plug the usb cable into the phone quickly to get into download mode (if I plugged the phone is slowly ODIN did not recognize the phone no COM, once I did it quick and it picked it up)
11. push START as soon as ODIN shows the COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4 etc (this had to be done quickly too, If i waited ODIN would show the COM but still would not start flashing back to stock)
this worked for me more than once I hope it helps you good luck
oh ok thanks, ill give that a try when i get off of work. i hope my battery doesnt die idk if its charging or not
well no luck even getting back to download mode. i bought a jig so i guess im waiting and trying while i wait.
i keep reading its possible to completely brick if odin fails... did i perma brick?
well a bump of sorts, the jig should come in the mail tomorrow. i miss my phone
jig came in the mail, im working on a few failed odin3 attempts but as i freaked out and started typing this post it seems like a great success. the jig works wonderful

I have not had to do this but I know some others had issues with Odin and had to right click on Odin and run as administrator for it to work. Also the Odin 1 click should work in almost any situation to get you back to stock. The only worry (again never had the problem) is that depending on the build version of the phone you could lose the three button recovery. Look for the Odin that DG posted.

[Q] I Killed my Captivate

So lately i have been having a ridiculous amount of issues on my phone. RAM was constantly used up it kicked me out of programs all the time, battery sucked, itd be laggy and jumpy power button stopped working etc. so last night i decided screw it i was sick of it and i was just going to start fresh so first i just did the system reset or whatever on the phone.
Now heres the problem, after the reset i turn the phone on it boots up and goes to the tutorial, when i either skip the tutorial or finish it i get an error message saying the tutorial isnt working properly and asking to force close. so i close it and then all i get is a black screen with the clock on the top. Not of the buttons on it work and it wont do anything but pull down the menu.
ive tried the odin 1 click master clear but it and my computer wont recognize the phone along with me putting it into download mode and trying to flash to stock. Odin doesnt see it and my computer says the drivers are broken and it wont recognize the device.
I re-installed all the drivers but the same results occur. I did however manage to have my computer see it when i put it in samsung keis mode (can still choose that from the drop down menu when i plug it in) however i dont know if that will help anything.
So any and all help will be greatly welcomed as i now am without a phone and need it very soon. Thanks

If Odin isn't being friendly to your phone, try using Heimdall. You can get all the same things you need from Odin, but it's a different set of drivers and a different program, which might solve your issues.
If you need one, here's a Heimdall One-click to stock Froyo that AdamOutler made. It's really easy to use - just download it, let it install, and click flash.
alright ill try it and see how it goes thanks a lot
no luck. Heimdall doesnt recognize it connected and my computer still says it wont recognize it so im guessing thats the main issue first...

If you haven't already, try turning your phone and computer off. Then reboot the computer and let it settle. Once it's all set up, move your USB cable to a port at the back of the computer (or somewhere else on the computer if it's a laptop).
Once you've done that, start up Heimdall. Once it's up and settled, start up your phone in download mode, then hook up the phone.
both have been restarted a couple times but ill try that again. i grabbed a different usb cable as well. this time it allowed heimdall to recognize the device at first but when i started it said no drivers and it i followed the instructions it said after however the options heimdall said werent available. im confused why it would so no drivers as i just reinstalled them and when i plugged the phone in for heimdall it said drivers installed.
but no at the end of trying a couple times the device is back to unrecognized and heimdall cant see it

Heimdall uses a different set of drivers (libusb) instead of the ones that samsung provides. I would suggest that you go ahead and uninstall the Heimdall drivers as well as the samsung drivers, reboot the computer, and run Heimdall again. Let it finish installing the drivers and be ready, then reboot one more time and try again.
eventually got it working and got it back to stock 2.2 however my 3g isnt working and when i try to run the update on the phone to gingerbread it wont connect to att. i thought maybe i could just flash up to gingerbread but when i put it in download mode and connect it odin still doesnt recognize it and this was after rebooting both

If you were able to get it to work with Heimdall, and you're wanting to go to stock GB, I would suggest using Adam's UCKH3 Heimdall One-click. This will flash stock AT&T Gingerbread (well.. technically that doesn't exist yet, but..) and the i897 Gingerbread bootloaders at the same time.
Just make sure you have all your important stuff backed up to something that isn't your phone before you do it, and that you have a good connection between your computer and phone.
well that one worked so thanks but still no 3g or any data connection

Just to check, make sure your IMEI matches the one on your phone.
To do this (assuming you're on AT&T), go to the dialer and type *#06#.
Write down that number, then open your battery case.
Take out the battery, and look on the sticker with the barcode. Above the first barcode should be your phone's IMEI. Double check to make sure those match.
If not, you may have some issues with the contents of your /efs folder.

Can't boot, getting a yellow triangle...

First of all, I'm sorry if the answer is somewhere, I searched, but I "only" found many threads with suggestions for JIG use... The three stickies of Q&A also don't present related information I believe...
After some stuck situation in odin, I can't boot the phone. I get a yellow triangle, between a phone and a computer icons. Even if I try to charge the Phone, I get that static screen.
There's anything I can do without using JIG? I cannot enter download mode (at least with the traditional way), I always get that screen. As fair as I know, the phone is still 2.1 with official firmware (i was trying to apple the 2.3.6)

The problem is, I cant get out of the black screen of death.. in fact, I'm not sure if this model/version can enter download mode through combo keys, yesterday when the phone was borrowed to me, I tried and I couldn't, so I was using adb reboot download shell command - but anyway, the drivers are there.

Yes. I'm wondering if my Google Nexus S drivers didn't not conflicted with the drivers I installed. I don't know.
Well, I'll try with another laptop, if that don't work, is it advisable to use a jig connector from a "trusted" seller? I'm asking because I already saw a comment or two along the about blewed (is this a word?) up phones.
Hey mate had the same issue your gonna have to get a jig as a lot of the i9000's came with corrupted boot loaders so you can't get into download without the jig and the screen your on isn't download mode I know which one your talking about with the phone the triangle and the computer

Do I risk blowing up the phone using JIG?
No the jig basicly makes it so a certain voltage signal is sent to the CPU triggering download mode no risk at all

I tried with another laptop with very well configured drivers, and didn't worked. Still didn't detected by odin. When I tried with another galaxy it works, after entering download mode...
I'm not admired, because before the brick, I was not able to enter the download mode with como keys, I shouldnt be surprised that does not happen now..

1) Uninstall your drivers, and re-install the ones following the instructions and link above.
2) Pull your battery out for a few mins and then put it back in and go into download mode (power, volume down, home button).
3) Download stock + odin from the link above, and start odin, and connect phone to pc through usb.
Your phone should be detected -- this is where you got stuck right? I'll assume if its detected, the rest you can figure out (plus its in the link above)
Good luck bro!

That would be a good suggestion if could get into download mode Tried everything, including some other solutions that I found around the Web. Looks like the bootloader was corrupted since the beginning, and now that I need it more than ever (because the black screen of death phone-!-pc), I stucked until (hopefully) i get a JIG... Already bought one, have to wait a few days to receive it. Until then, I'm going to use a old nokia.
Jig is only option then install a stock gingerbread that will fix 3 button combos

I dont know if this is the right place but I am desprate I have looked and looked for possible answers nothing worked....
Finally got it into download mode but computer did not detect unplugged phone now its stuck in cell ! computer icon and phone
turns on automatically when battery is inserted
The phone ! Computer screen is download mode. This has happened because the last time you tried to use Odin the cable was pulled to soon. Open the Odin one click your trying to use while the phone is on that screen, and plug in the USB. If Odin does not recognize it you can look here for connection issues.

Heimdall and Odin won't work on same USB port. Have you tried using a different one?
Kinda a shot in the dark but if you haven't tried it yet, put the jig in before the battery. Or try the jig a couple times (wait like 20-30sec in between) with the battery in, that worked for me before.
Odin help
Hey Guys... I am trying to see if anyone can help me figure out the problem with my phone.. i currently have the stock rom running 2.2 i897uckb2
Kernel - 2.6.32.9 - Froyo build
Now I have trying to get Odin to recognize my phone when I am in download mode but it noes not show up in the port field. I have been trying both odin 1.3 as well as Odin 1 click...
The funny thing is that Heimdall can recognize the phone on one click but i am trying to get odin to recognize so that i can switch roms... I preffer Odin to Heimdall so if anybody has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.
By the way if i am not in download mode and the phone is on and I connect it and have odin on, it actually recognizes the phone... so not sure...
Thanks for any help guys...

Have you tried another USB port? My experience with heidmall is that when you install it's own driver, Odin no longer recognizes the phone when you boot into download mode. If for some reason it still doesn't work, I suppose you could uninstall your captivate drivers and re install them.
Ok... cuz really i did feel that it was because of the one click heimdall that the driver might not be recognized... Mind pointing me to how to un install and then re install the driver on the phone...?
Thanks again for the quick response.

Heimdall installs it's own drivers to the USB port you use it on. You will have to use another USB port if you wanna use Odin (Your pc should have more than one).
You could uninstall the drivers but it is far more complicated than just using a different USB port.
location GPS antenna on i897. Well, then disassemble the phone and the antenna to be under the speaker if the speaker remove the antenna located in the top right corner of the board. Who can come up with how to enhance signal reception, write.
