WTF am I doing wrong????? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to flash a ROM, but I simply can't get ODIN to work properly. I've used ODIN 1-click and the other ODIN and both get stuck - the 1-Click gets stuck on file analysis and in other ODIN version got stuck on Initialization (two steps AFTER file analysis). It freezes either way... and YES, I did get the Com port assignment; all USB drivers are loaded/installed.
Needless to say, my phone now reboots with the stupid Phone + Triangle + Computer thing...
I can still get to Download Mode but I'm a bit confused as to where to go from here. Should I use a different computer or try a different method or what? Based on the research I've done, this should have just taken off and worked, no issues....
The phone was a bone stock flash (although rooted) and I was following the steps outlined in Connexion's video.
HELP!

Well, your first problem is you posted this in development instead of Q&A.
But in all seriousness, make sure you start the odin 1 click BEFORE connecting the phone. If you start it after it will get stuck in file analysis.
Hopefully this helps.

Same thing happened to me. I flash serendity and tried to update and odin was just stuck. But I did a reset with the three button fix...that seemed o work.

IIRC, It was open before starting plugging the phone in. Does it matter which ODIN I use?

You could try bay_wolf's AIO Captivate Toolbox thats linked in my signature.

Wrong section buddy! You'll get less flaming and more help in Q&A.
Have you opened Odin before putting the phone in Download? Also, this post by nbs11 might help you along a bit

Also, run odin as administrator.

Yeah, I do this along with a few other precautions: ensuring that I run 1-click as an administrator (right click, run as administrator), ensuring that the proper USB drivers are installed (the one from the 1-click thread).
If it doesn't work, try another USB port.

Sorry about the wrong area - I just panicked I think.
I just tried it again and this time it hung up on "Setup Connection".
Very odd.
I'm going to try it on my laptop and see what happens...

make sure you plug the usb cable into a usb port on the motherboard. front panel usb ports can play hell with odin.

So.... are you starting with the phone off... start odin.... hold both volume buttons down then plug in USB?

That could also be my problem.
However, I loaded everything onto my laptop (also running Win7 64bit) and it went through with NO issues... The flash back to stock that is....
I think I'm gonna use the laptop from here on out - Both of my desktops have given me problems with Odin.

next time try this: with the phone powered off and odin running, hold both volume buttons down while plugging the cable in. again, odin can be a b*tch sometimes.
glad ta hear ya got it to flash.

Try: 1st open Odin, 2nd add pit and tar, 3rd battery out then install battery while holding both volume keys, usb to phone.

Right ...like RPICASO said.... is pretty much what I was getting at.
Holding the buttons down while plugging in the usb will start the phone up into download mode and be connected properly.
Glad you got it going....

Well, after the ODIN mishap and then switching to my laptop - Everything else went very smoothly, just as outlined in the video.
I installed Andromeda 1.1 and it looks really nice!
Thanks again for the quick help/responses - I REALLY appreciate it.
Mods: Could you move this to the correct section?
THANKS!!

Seems to be - Right out of the box I'm impressed - It just has a rock solid feel to it.
I was also VERY impressed that I walked outside and opened Maps and was INSTANTLY locked onto GPS - Whereas this afternoon I tried the same thing on the stock JH7 2.1 and didn't get a lock EVER.
WOOTTTT!!!!!
One quick general question - I backed up using Ti-Ba before I flashed. My apps are restored, but all of my settings (email, background, icons, usernames/pass) seem to be missing. In Ti-Ba I used "Restore missing apps with data". It did restore the apps, but the details seem to be missing. Should I have used a different restore option (or can I use one now)?
THANKS AGAIN!!! I'll give some feedback tomorrow; for now, time for sleep.

[Q] Phone is a brick after deleting framework-res, help?

K so like an idiot i deleted framework-res, and now my phone turns on to a black screen. I've tried to reflash it with odin and odin 1 click, but it always gets stuck at "file analysis". I don't get why because I used odin 1 click to install froyo in the first place so I know it works.
Anyway, I have no idea what to do, as I can't get any files on or off my phone because ADP will always say the device is not connected.
if its stuck at file analysis keep fiddling until it goes past that for instance plug in into download mode with it open and then unplug and replug it in. just keep trying.
i've been trying for hours... rebooting.. reinstalling.. everything. it won't get past File Analysis...
Are you trying to use the odin 1click to flash back to jf6? That might work.

nope, still hangs at File Analysis
i have done the same and now back up i used an old odin to go back to original stock and then updated to froyo after. If you can use sdk adb reboot recovery and fromat your sd card then try odin again this worked for me
maybe try restarting computer. make sure you dont have anything adb related running. pull battery. start odin one click. put battery back in. hold vol-up and down at same time(just the vol. buttons no power) plug in usb from comp. to your phone while you still have the vol. buttons held. should be in download mode. click start.
and if you wanna try pushing a new framework, i guess you could try to boot into recovery and adb should see it then as debugging mode is auto on in recovery mode. let us know.

Are you using 64 bit Windows 7? I am and had a similar problem. On my original attempts to flash my phone with earlier versions of Cognition, I learned that if you don't disable the lagfix, you can have a problem. Assuming you used one I hope you disabled it. I also used odin 1-click at the time and it didn't work terribly well, mostly due to the voodoo lagfix ext4 filesystem.
Secondly, I've also found that it's best to go into download mode using the following method:
I do a battery pull, remove sim and sdcard (if you have one), put battery back in. Make sure your USB cable is plugged into a USB port on the motherboard, not one of those front USB ports (they sometimes don't get enough juice, you wouldn't want the device to disconnect in the middle of a flash). Hold volume up/down and plug in the USB cable. Odin one click should recognize the phone is hooked up to a COM port. At that point, you click the start button and it flashes. It should not take more than 1-2 minutes to flash. If Odin looks like it it is not working, rather it sits at Verifying or does not actually move at a brisk pace, it's not going to work. You can let it sit for hours and it will never flash. If this happens, do the battery pull and try again. My first time doing this was rather nerve wracking as i thought i bricked my phone. Had the screen with the phone/exclamation mark/computer and the computer did not detect my phone via USB. I've seen people who say reinstalling the Samsung drivers or rebooting the computer or switching USB ports might help as well.
Ever since i figured out the above, i've been able to flash my Captivate on Win 7 64bit without a hitch. Currently running the latest build of Cognition 2.2 and loving it.
I've done all of the above and Odin hangs on Verifying, ADB gives the same error message on every "ADB" command : "error: device offline: (while in recovery mode)
My computer/Odin does recognize that it's plugged in, but it won't mount and let me into the SD card or format it, etc.

You should post what you did to fix it in case someone has the same issue
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yes he should.
What did you do to fix it? Do tell.
10 bucks says he succeeded once he read the directions properly.
Reading is hard, that is why so few people do it.
Same exact thing happened to to me 2 days ago. All I did was:
1)take the battery and SIM card out, wait a few seconds,
2)run Odin3 on my PC and hookup the USB cable to the phone while still off
3) hold both Volume buttons down while phone is off and connected
3)at the same time, slide in the battery with 1 finger or have someone do it
4)keep volume keys held down as the battery is installed and my phone turned on straight into download mode
5) phone pops up in Odin3 and just click Start, flashed to stock JH6
I am 80% sure I wasn't holding the power button while holding the Vol keys. If that doesn't work above ^^^ hold all 3 buttons and it should go into download mode.
so.. I fubard framework.apk trying to get teh circle battery mod on my phone (it just hung forever and *poof* black screen o' nothing after I pulled the battery)
So.. I'm following the directions but windows keeps finding the phone as some type of crazy serial device and is asking for drivers ... so I'm fux0red methinks.
Any help is appreciated - but I think I did a real number on this thing.
Ok... these are the steps I've done.
Shutdown the device.
Pulled battery, Sim, SD Card.
Popped the battery back in.... didn't power it up.
Turned on Odin3
Popped the USB cable into the phone while holding both volume buttons.
I get the lil triangle.
... then I get a windows message stating "SERIAL GADGET" and the XP wizard comes up looking for drivers. It doesnt find anything of course.
So.. I rinse and repeat and it can't find the device.
So what am I missing o wise XDA folks?

Get the right drivers if you havent already and find the USB port that works. Post 8 above is very good. On my netbook, only one of the three usb ports works for the captivate, i've marked it since with a happy face.
Ok.. at home now on my Win7 machine - all is good in Odin restore land...
Except - I flash using the Odin 1 Click and still boot to a black screen.
I think because I had the Voodoo lagfix on it - it won't format correctly and load the rest of the ROM onto the SDCard

[Q] Odd Download mode problem

So, to start off, the issue at hand is not download mode, I can get into that quite easily. It's that neither one click odin or regular odin won't recognize it. I've gone back to stock so many times without issue, but this particular time I tried, it froze on sbl.bin. My screen turned a greenish black, and stayed on that for about 10 minutes before I decided it was frozen and I did a battery pull. Tried it again and the exact same thing happened. Now, windows says "One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it"
I was going from icezar's Darky's 5.5 to stock when this happened. I've gone from the first i9000 2.2.1 stock rom back to stock 2.1 with no problems before. Any ideas? I've also reinstalled drivers, and I still get that error. also, my power button doesn't do squat when it's completely powered off. Only the volume up+down button combo can bring the download screen up, other than that, no go.
Ouch - You've reinstalled the drivers.
Odin doesn't see it when you have download mode and the USB plugged in.
Can you get ADB to see the device while in download mode?
You had USB Debugging turned on before things went south?
Hmm.. you could try:
Turn on ODIN
Remove the SIM, external SDCard, and battery.
Hold down both volume buttons - plug in the USB cable then jam in the battery and see if ODIN will recognize it then.
But.. if you can't get the computer to recognize your device even after re-installing the USB Drivers?
eh you might wait for a few more posts - but I think you might be fubard.
so you went into download mode, clicked start in ODIN 1 click and got hung up? nothing else happened during the process? Was the cable plugged all the way in?
Not sure how ADB would work if windows isn't recognizing it.. Do you have another PC you can connect to?
Sounds like it pooched while he was trying to Odin 1 Click back to stock and now its probably fubard as his computer won't recognize the device.
Good call on trying a different computer.
Btw - where are you downloading the USB drivers from? There are multiple sources out there and some seem to work better than others.
Thanks for the replies guys
I got them from the wiki page way back when around it was first put up... but I haven't really changed them since they were the only ones that I found worked at the time and pretty well actually, they've recognized my captivate perfectly all the time! Well, until recently. I also have kies mini installed if that means anything. I am gonna try a friend's computer and see what happens. *crosses fingers*

[Q] So I got my jig and got into download

So I got my jig and got into download... Now what. When I connect to AIO it says I need to enable usb, really how! Odin - start... Nothing. Odin - Master Clear... Nothing
Start odin first, then connect your phone. If nothing happens, try connecting it to a different usb port (one on the motherboard, at the back of your computer). If still nothing happens, chances are you don't have the proper drivers installed.
ok slow down, first off with AIO you DONT need download mode, you use it with your phone turned on normally and USB DEBUGGING on. the instructions are in AIO. read instructions, thats what they are there for.
also you dont need a jig unless the phone is bricked, there is the button method AND AIO uses ADB commands to AUTOMATICALLY put your phone into donwload when needed. and its only needed when using ODIN, some people need to open odin first, some not, but odin is the only time you use download mode.

Wish this were the case. I've been using this LAPTOP for several months. Just flashed a new rom to my sons Cappy. No this systems all go, its my Cappy that's no show
When you plug the phone in and download mode starts, does the COM show up on Odin? If it does, you're good to go otherwise you need to get different drivers or maybe try using a different USB port or restart the laptop.

Wild.. wonder if you just have a bad cable or failing usb port or something..
I had this happened last night. Just finally worked about about 5 or more times. Just took some patience and constantly trying multiple ways with different ports. Although I have never had this problem before. Usually only took a maximum 2 tries.

[Q] I Killed my Captivate

So lately i have been having a ridiculous amount of issues on my phone. RAM was constantly used up it kicked me out of programs all the time, battery sucked, itd be laggy and jumpy power button stopped working etc. so last night i decided screw it i was sick of it and i was just going to start fresh so first i just did the system reset or whatever on the phone.
Now heres the problem, after the reset i turn the phone on it boots up and goes to the tutorial, when i either skip the tutorial or finish it i get an error message saying the tutorial isnt working properly and asking to force close. so i close it and then all i get is a black screen with the clock on the top. Not of the buttons on it work and it wont do anything but pull down the menu.
ive tried the odin 1 click master clear but it and my computer wont recognize the phone along with me putting it into download mode and trying to flash to stock. Odin doesnt see it and my computer says the drivers are broken and it wont recognize the device.
I re-installed all the drivers but the same results occur. I did however manage to have my computer see it when i put it in samsung keis mode (can still choose that from the drop down menu when i plug it in) however i dont know if that will help anything.
So any and all help will be greatly welcomed as i now am without a phone and need it very soon. Thanks

If Odin isn't being friendly to your phone, try using Heimdall. You can get all the same things you need from Odin, but it's a different set of drivers and a different program, which might solve your issues.
If you need one, here's a Heimdall One-click to stock Froyo that AdamOutler made. It's really easy to use - just download it, let it install, and click flash.
alright ill try it and see how it goes thanks a lot
no luck. Heimdall doesnt recognize it connected and my computer still says it wont recognize it so im guessing thats the main issue first...

If you haven't already, try turning your phone and computer off. Then reboot the computer and let it settle. Once it's all set up, move your USB cable to a port at the back of the computer (or somewhere else on the computer if it's a laptop).
Once you've done that, start up Heimdall. Once it's up and settled, start up your phone in download mode, then hook up the phone.
both have been restarted a couple times but ill try that again. i grabbed a different usb cable as well. this time it allowed heimdall to recognize the device at first but when i started it said no drivers and it i followed the instructions it said after however the options heimdall said werent available. im confused why it would so no drivers as i just reinstalled them and when i plugged the phone in for heimdall it said drivers installed.
but no at the end of trying a couple times the device is back to unrecognized and heimdall cant see it

Heimdall uses a different set of drivers (libusb) instead of the ones that samsung provides. I would suggest that you go ahead and uninstall the Heimdall drivers as well as the samsung drivers, reboot the computer, and run Heimdall again. Let it finish installing the drivers and be ready, then reboot one more time and try again.
eventually got it working and got it back to stock 2.2 however my 3g isnt working and when i try to run the update on the phone to gingerbread it wont connect to att. i thought maybe i could just flash up to gingerbread but when i put it in download mode and connect it odin still doesnt recognize it and this was after rebooting both

If you were able to get it to work with Heimdall, and you're wanting to go to stock GB, I would suggest using Adam's UCKH3 Heimdall One-click. This will flash stock AT&T Gingerbread (well.. technically that doesn't exist yet, but..) and the i897 Gingerbread bootloaders at the same time.
Just make sure you have all your important stuff backed up to something that isn't your phone before you do it, and that you have a good connection between your computer and phone.

Just to check, make sure your IMEI matches the one on your phone.
To do this (assuming you're on AT&T), go to the dialer and type *#06#.
Write down that number, then open your battery case.
Take out the battery, and look on the sticker with the barcode. Above the first barcode should be your phone's IMEI. Double check to make sure those match.
If not, you may have some issues with the contents of your /efs folder.

Take a look at the "Connection Help" thread in my signature. That might get you where you need to be.
I did read that all ready. When I did the factory reset I included the sd clear too. It was going on a half hour and still at the att splash screen so I pulled the battery. What if it wasn't done? What would happen to my phone? I put a spare battery in and am letting it sit at the splash screen and the phone is warm like its doing something. Should I just let it do that til the battery dies? Idk, I hope I can fix it.

Take a look at the "Connection Help" thread in my signature. That might get you where you need to be.

You shouldn't need to let it sit until the battery dies. All that happens in a factory reset is that the OS clears a handful of folders, putting everything back to it stock state.
Can you get into download mode? In theory, you should just need to hold V+/V- and insert the USB cable (from a powered-off state). If you can do that, try plugging in again and see if Heimdall sees the phone. Once you've got it hooked up, you should be able to do some flashing.
Also, if you used an ODIN package prior to using Heimdall, it's a good idea to remove the Samsung USB drivers (in the Add/Remove programs list).
On a side note... what Heimdall package are you using? Heimdall by itself or as a one-click?
I just downloaded the heimdall suite 1.3.1. I tried to install the driver but it only sees my phone as gadget serial. I can use my girlfriends captivate to install the right driver but what if it still doesn't see mine? I'm tryng to read how to use it but I'm still gonna need help probably.

At this point, I'd suggest leaving your girlfriend's captivate out of the picture. Driver installation will most likely be something the computer responds to in the same fashion regardless.
Do you have a rom that you're wanting to flash with Heimdall? If not, it might be more worthwhile to grab a One-click that has a rom you want to flash.
I would suggest that you uninstall the Samsung USB drivers, reboot your computer, and let it sit. Then pull the battery on your phone and try to get into download mode. Once you're there, start up whatever Heimdall version you have/get, and then connect the phone. See if Heimdall sees it then.
Yes, I was on Illuminance 2.1.1 & was trying to do a fresh start for illum3 so I have the zip downloaded. I can only get into download mode by plugging it into the computer. Maybe I could plug it into the wall & get in d/l mode. Would that work?

I don't know if it will kick it to download mode from the wall, but if you want, you can just rearrange the steps a little and put it in download mode before you do the driver stuff, unplug the phone, and just leave it sitting in download mode while you reboot the computer.
If you were on Illuminance (a GB rom), you can use the Heimdall one-click in my signature. That will automate everything for you, and it doesn't have bootloaders (which removes another potential issue). Assuming it works, it also has CWM already baked in, so you can flash Illuminance without an additional step.
I uninstalled the samsung android usb mobile software but there's still samsung usb driver for mobile phones that says it successfully uninstalled but is still there. I'm downloading your one click heimdall now, it might be a while because I'm connected to across the street and lose connection when a big truck blocks my signal. Will that affect the download?

I don't think it should matter - as long as you're using pretty much any browser but IE, they all (I think) have a download manager that can handle interrupted downloads.
If you're worried, and on Firefox, grab DownThemAll.
Also, the other entry will probably disappear when you reboot. If not, try to uninstall it again.

It won't go away no matter how I do it. I'm pretty sure I got the main one because it made me restart.

ok, finally got it downloaded and started but the samsung driver wasn't an option, only gadget serial. I let it load that and am restarting now. Will it still work??

As long as Heimdall detected that you have a device connected, you should be in good shape.
It said kernel upload failed, ended session. Now what?
Tried again & says it needs drivers again.

Unplug the phone, pull the battery. Close Heimdall. Put your phone in download mode, open Heimdall, and plug into a different USB port, then try again.
Can I open heimdall first then plug in to get into download mode?

It shouldn't matter - if one way doesn't work, just try the other way.
Now I got firmware upgrade fail. Try using recovery mode. With the phone..!..computer pic

Don't worry - the phone--/!\--pc screen will operate the same as download mode.
If my one-click isn't working, you could also try AdamOutler's UCKH3 one-click. You'll have to flash a Gingerbread kernel with CWM with it as well, but it's another option to try.
Somethings working here
Got blue progress line
