Searched for it

My history is as follows:
Stock to Root
Back to stock
Installed JH7 via mini Kies
BAck to stock
(Learned how to use adb to get into download mode)
Loaded Froyo "Officical beta"
Wanted to try the Clockwork mod so I went back to stock using ODIN
Installed the Zip files in proceeded to install Clockwork then searched for and found the OTA file
There are two files out there. JH7_OTA.zip and JTA_OTA_STOCK.zip
The latter did not work and hung up on install..I loaded the former and it installed.
Now a few questions regarding Clockwork
I dropped the Cognition 2.2 5 in my root directory..Can I load that in the same way? Then go back to the JH7 when the Official 2.2 froyo comes out? Whether rooted or not?
If I want to root the phone I will have two update.zips in the root directory (Clockwork and the root upadate.zip)...Must I remove Clockwork? IS it loaded or does it execute from the zip every time? Can I rename the Root update.zip to something else now that I can "find" it with Clickwork?
I like the clockworkmod and will definitely pay for it if it allows me to change ROMS I place on the SD on the fly rooted or unrooted (would never need to go back to JH6 and deal with adb if so)
Final question,,,Shoudl I use clockwork to "reset the battery?"
I do not intend to do any lagfixing beyond whatever is in Cognition since that seems to be more of a problem than it may be worth
Thanks...Its been two weeks since i became an Andriod fan and i have learned alot.....and still am
Read the Cog wiki, there have been so many versions I can't remember all of them and the install instructions, some you needed to flash through Clockwork. Cog 2.2 5 Is Froyo whicj means you can not use Clockwork to flash anything with Froyo running because Froyo is not an official release and is BETA it is not signed, Koush hasn't found a way to sign it in order for Clockwork to work with it yet. Clockwork is worth having the paid version yes. You must be rooted to use ROM Manager so unrooting you loose access.
If you are using JH7 that you flashed check if you have SuperUser in your apps drawer, if so you are rooted. Get used to Odin if you are going to mod your phone you will use it more than you think and it becomes less scarey the more you use it.
You've already modded your phone so OTA updates will not work for you, mini kies will so go ahead and flash away, you will eventually have to flash with Odin to update with mini kies so go have fun. Also, those guys on the dev section will have the official up as soon as it comes out. We had JH7 within a few hours, none of us could do the OTA and AT&T bricked a lot of phones so I will only use stuff from Samsung anyways.

Yeah I have two phones and one is the guinea pig. I have my main phone on the pre release of Froyo. I am practicing getting the second phone eventually from Cognition2.2 5 to Samsung's official release. I have used ODIN probably 10 times to get back to JH6 where I have to use the adb SDK to get into recovery/Download modes.
The OTA updates did not work for either phone which is why I began modding and learning, Mini Kies was the only way to get JH7 until now with Clockwork.

I'm inviting all you guys shoot me down for the noob i am.
I've search and i have found, I've read but only partially understood.
the background:
-Nexus one on vodafone epf30
-Downgraded to erd79 using fastboot (via Terminal in Mac-osx).
-Rotted and installed Amon recovery with sucess.
-At this stage i tried to install a variety of different pre rooted roms
- upgraded to frf91 OTA after giving up on trying to root froyo
I basically just would Froyo 2.2 rooted on nexus one.
I've found a variety of different methods and techs but haven't had any success i can downgrade again and again but each attempt i reach the update.zip stage and simply get a varification failed message.it's likley ive missed something here?!
I'm on mac and I'm sure I'm not having the update.zip.zip issue. ive checked and double checked, (that same issue caught me out before on symbian).
Does anyone dhave a simple deffinitive soloution or can point me in the right direction/
im aware this post will cause a shower of "search you noob SCUM!" style posts.
cheers in advance

Read from:
"By Popular Demand (Credit to lox):
Update.zip to flash with custom recovery"
Download, update using AmonRa's recovery, reboot to bootloader, flash new radio from any Froyo ROM thread in Development, reboot, enjoy.
hi, thanks for your reply. I'm pretty sure i have tried this method. if i down grade to erd79 can i apply this from there or should i go up to ere27 ? and does this require amons recovery or can it be done from a standard recovery?
Sorry im a symbian migrant :-( this is all new and exciting
ok so i down graded again to erd79 then rooted and installed AMONs recovery
installation of update.zip fails with the verification failed, is there something about AMONs custom recovery that im missing should what could be the cause for the verification to fail. im pretty sad now.
maybe there is a way to flash pre rooted Froyo directly using super boot?
maybe i need to be up
You've already installed a custom recovery. Basically you are done the whole rooting process.
No more need to downgrade or anything of the sort. Now you just go into recovery and flash what you want, no other steps.
Now you should be able to flash any custom rom meant for unlocked users.
You may be trying to flash the official 2.2 rom, try looking for a 2.2 for root users. Or try flashing CyanogenMod 6.
Are you sure you have Amon's Recovery because my buddy though he had it and he didnt which is why he couldnt install a rooted froyo ROM. Try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702191
ok ill give that rom a shot though i think my main issue could be the fact im using mac os x the downloader in safari automatically unzips .zip files so maybe recompressing the zip is causing the varification to fail.
ill have a go when im home and at a faster net connection work is like 0.2 up and down makes me feel ill!
Oh ok. I have a MAC aswell but I use google chrome for my browser.
OMG! mods lock this down! no need for anything more to be added!
MAC = FAIL
Windows+win
all you have to do is download using anyother browser DONT USE SAFARI!
and success will be yours! rebooting now to pre rooted custom frf91 WOOP!
Hey OP,
Actually you can still use Safari as it does unzip the file automatically but it also downloads the zip file so you end up with both. At least my MAC does this. MAC's are great, Safari on the other hand is junk so don't blame the whole computer for the browsers fault.
OK I have two Captivates one to use and one to "mess up" LOL Seems my wife prefers my old N97...
So here is sending me to school.
So far I have rooted from JH6 Unrooted
Applied JH7 using Mini Kies
Master Cleared and put DG "official beta Froyo on it. (all of which still makes me a Noob at this)
Now I went back to Stock and am setting it up for Clockwork which I don;t seem to understand after reading through the threads (saw the dreaded little phone=PC moniker for the first time but was able to try again and it worked.)
My goal is to be able to use what ever ROM I want then use Clockwork to get it back to a ate ATT will recognize for an official 2.2 upgrade if that is even possible
I have upgraded to JH7 in the past using Mini Kies......now I read there is a Clockwork/JH7OTA combo that might do the same and allow for an ATT upgrade..
Should I put Clockwork on an SD card to be able to use it or put (recovery-)Update.zip and OTAJH& in the root of the internal SD and run recovery as instructed.....
THEN if I want to load Cognition's 2.2 Beta 5 for fun can I use Clockwork to get it back to ATT recognizable form??
It has been stated hundreds of times Clockwork does not work with Froyo. So the answer is no, the only way to go back to JH7 or JF6 is to flash with Odin back to stock, JF6, then use Clockwork.

Okay.So Clockwork is not the tool to use when going back to stock. A PC is needed. ODIN is the ONLY way....Got it.
But it can be used to install 2.2 Beta 5 zip like it was used to instal the OTA.zip?
So apparently Clockwork is of no use to those on Froyo at this time. Is there something on froyo or any non stock ROM that CAN be used in the same way?
Just trying to get a handle on this......
I heave read hundreds of posts and threads and sometimes the information becomes juxtaposed. Sometimes "Rights" become "wrongs" as threads continue....
LOL, yeah the threads become a bunch of silly noob questions. I don't remember how it was installed honestly there have been so many updates I lost track and since Clockwork is useless for me at the moment I haven't thought about it. There is a thread over on XDA that someone was able to make an update using FROYO that is 2e so that Clockwork works with it. I haven't tried it yet today. I was watching to see if many had trouble with it. I'm guessing they used a kernal that is based on Eclair and used Froyo ROM, but I am not 100% on that, some are using it with the current Cog 2.2 beta 5.5 so I amy give it a shot. here's the link

NO i giggle as well....in embarrassment ...especially when I found I could not edit it..
BTW just tried loading Cognition 2.2 5 ROM with clockwork....no go
I have taken the clockwork.zip off the phone left the Cognition on and going to root and install using Rom Manager.....
I am new to android
Since the official 2.2 upgrade is released, I updated through Samsung kies mini without unrooting my stock rom 2.1
then I found the superuser icon vanished
I google it and tried Super One Click
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
...it said rooted but when i download rom manager...the first thing i did is to backup current rom...when i clicked ok for backup...it did nothing...then i tried to download some apps required root to see if it works...every apps required root (super manager, rom manager(appeared not responding for every options), root exploer, etc.) forced close...
i tried one click root for for all models as well...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742403
but i cant even launch the app by using window 7 32 bit...
i tried the alternative way suggest by other ppl by only double click the root 2.2.bat..it pushed an update.zip file to my phone but when i tried to reinstalll package..it failed and say E signature verification failure!?...
I even tried it on mac..but failed as well (i connected my phone and the software said it pushed the update.zip and boot into recovery mode but in fact nothing happening on my phone)
I did a factory reset and wondering how to root AT&T Captivate official 2.2
I'm having the same problem. I don't think any of those one click apps will work with 2.2 official, since they're all for 2.1. I tried all of them, and none of them worked. I'm getting the Atrix soon anyway, so I'm not gonna bother trying to root my Captivate anymore
Have you tried using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944418
i tested the KB1 froyo update and rooting via superoneclick just to see how it works. I had to reboot after rooting it though. Superuser was there but it didnt appear rooted. After rebooting, everything worked fine.
I'm back with Phoenix 5.2, which I recommend over the stock froyo update anyway.
Rooting 2.2
I had the same problem. What I found from searching around is that the recovery console in 2.2 is 3e. 3e fixed the loophole most of the rooting software goes after, so , no 2.2 won't root, at least not the same way 2.1 would.
I also upgraded to the leaked Froyo, but later on downgraded to 2.1 so that I could use the normal upgrade methods.
Enjoy !
Is it mean that AIO Captivate Toolbox is not working too?
If it is..then I wont try
been worried to make another factory reset
these threads are so common now.
use SuperOneClick. it works, but you cant use the PSNeuter method, you have to use the RAGE method.....look to the right of the buttons when you load it up, you will see what i am talking about
Just a quick background, I purchased my DS7 at staples and rooted it and installed CWM using the info found on the forums so I could connect to my ad-hoc tether. Last week I attempted to install the HC upgrade and got the mis-match message. I booted into CWM and started looping. In an effort to correct this I mistakenly wiped the memory (big mistake!). I found the instructions on flashing the stock ROM (turned out that it was TMO) and got the unit running again. I called Dell (I have posted in another thread on this) and they are to send a pickup. In the meantime I have found instructions on flashing the OEM stock wfi ROM and have done so. I, like many others, noticed that the service tag was wrong and edited PG23/line220 to reflect my correct tag ( note to posters of ROMs and those who would flash: before doing so write down all the information about your unit so you can make changes later if needed). I now have most everything back to pre-upgrade status, but Gingerbreak v1.2 will not root. When I attempt it the program runs but I get a message “Not sure what happened her. Either the exploit failed or the reboot failed. Please reboot manually and see if you have Superuser!” I reboot and nothing, no Superuser and no root access. Also, before I attempt the “unroot’ option is greyed out so I take it that the unit is not rooted nor can I see root files in file manager One thing I have not tried is the CWM un-install that was included in the stock ROM flash thread. Since I don’t see it and I boot into fastboot I am guessing that it is gone. Any suggestions or has anyone had this issue as well?
Another note, I too have the 338 version and no auto update yet. I am not real sure I want to update now. To those that have updated, can you connect to ad-hoc networks with out changing the WPA?
Big wall of text, if you're on 2.2.x reflash CWM 3.0 and flash Superuser.zip as a update.zip though it.
If you're on HC, flash CWM 4.0 and flash Superuser7.zip on it.
Superuser.zip will always work on 2.x roms.
Superuser7.zip will always work on 3.x roms.
If you try and run the wrong one it will just 'run' and give no error, it will simply not do anything, but it wont damage anything.
Thanks, you think cwm is still lurking and giving problems? So I need to reinstall cwm and use it to install the zip? Won't CWM interfere with the HC update?

If you have CWM installed you won't get the update automatically no matter if you have a matching ROM or not... you must be FULLY stock... but I see no sense in waiting, TheManii has already posted the releases that are coming out... why not just flash the zip
Hey folks. I'm bailing on Gingerbread because it was causing me too many problems. I'm trying to get back on Firefly 3.0 and I'm stuck at getting the phone rooted.
Whenever I try to copy the Root.zip from the AIO folder over to the phone's root folder, I get an error about the parameter being incorrect. I'm not sure what to do at this point.
Use Fugu root? Easier.... Also depending on what Gingerbread you are on there are kernels that have the root scrip baked in them.
^ you misread he's not on gingerbread, he wants to flash firefly.
You don't need root to flash a ROM. Odin a kernel that has cwm baked in. boot into recovery and flash the ROM.
Thought he was on GB trying to get on... you know what ya I missread. @OP do what Studa said xD. Wonder why people think they need root to flash roms..... I blame Rom Manager.
I know I don't need to root the phone, but in order to get certain things done on the phone, it's necessary.
I'm actually at a wall right now. I used SamsungCaptivate-SGHi897-UCKB2-Rooted-One-Click which successfully booted my phone to ATT 2.2 firmware, but I can't get any Odin to pick up on it now. I've tried five different Odins.
At this point, I think once I get the phone up and running on Firefly, I'll be walking away from flashing until I get another phone. Then I can use this for testing, etc.
On a side note, before I started this project yesterday, my modem was messed up. Now it would seem I have a successful connection to wifi, which I couldn't get.
As great as that is, I still can't get Odin to pick up my phone. Any thoughts?
Was that kb2 package heimdall?
If so you have to uninstall the heimdall driver and reinstall the Samsung driver.
Either way I would reinstall the Samsung drivers but it is a must if you used heimdall add the drivers conflict.
Alright. That's done, but I'm on I896UXJL1-stock now, and I'm pretty sure in doing that through Odin 1.85 I unrooted the phone. Correct me if I'm wrong. That's why I used the ATT stuff, because it auto-rooted the phone.
So it would seem I have some issues to work through. I can either root my phone and be stuck with ATT firmware that I don't want, or I can unroot the phone and use Rogers stock and hope for the best with Firefly.
This is by far the most confusing computer-related issue I've ever worked with. There's too many options to play with and they all work differently.
Why would you be stuck on at&t firmware? Why do you need to root before flashing firefly? Why don't you root Rogers stock?
you're confusing everyone involved lol
Okay, so maybe I'm a little in the dark on the rooting issue. Basically, I'm going back to Firefly because I thought it was amazing. Fast, responsive, and no issues I can think of on my phone.
I'm rooting the phone because it's my understanding that in order to spoof my location in order to get certain apps (Google Music), I'd need to be rooted.
I'm having a hell of a time trying to get this done, and my biggest problem, to reiterate, is that I have about fifteen different Roms, all either ATT or Rogers, three different Pit files, and so, so many Odin programs.
I'm now on 2.1 with that Toronto stock firmware, in order to work around the 3e error in recovery mode when trying to put on Clockwork. Unfortunately, now I'm getting some other error in regards to the Update.Zip file, Status 7.
I apologize for confusing people, but I promise I've read as much as I can about the tools I'm using, but I'm running in circles, flashing back and forth trying to find solutions.
you do not need to root before flashing the rom. it will be rooted after and then you can do what you need to do to get your apps working if you need to (firefly contains canadian locale cause its based off of rogers froyo firmware) changing stuff before you flash so apps can work is a waste of time as the flash will overwrite the firmware you just tweaked.
now, since your on eclair i'm attaching an update.zip that contains cwm, put it in the root folder of your sdcard boot into recovery select reinstall packages twice and it should boot into cwm where you can then flash firefly.
You're a frickin' genius, Studa. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I've got Firefly on thanks to that Update file, and I'm getting the ball rolling on everything else. If I wasn't so broke, I'd donate, but I hope my thanks is good enough. I really appreciate the help. It cut through twelve hours of stupid.
