Legit updates on non-stock phone - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ive had my phone for about aweek now and have gone a little crazy modifying it. I imstalled voodoo lagfix amd the led notification mod. Then I disabled voodoo to get clockwork functioning and install a gps fix, then, for the hell of it tried oclf. If and when there is an update released and I going to run into issues if I do th e update to the phone as is. If I have to revert I know I can except for voodoo. From what I read I need to flash a stock image to get rid of it completely. So the question stands, in its present state is my phone safely updateable?
Cheers

Voodoo Lagfix

From reading various voodoo lagfix threads I got the idea that it makes your SGS ridiculously fast. I want to install this on my phone, however, I have one of the fragile I9000m versions of the SGS from Bell. Is there any stable release for the voodoo lagfix for this combination?
Firmware - 2.2
Baseband Version - I9000UGJL2
Kernel Version - 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #6
Build Number FROYO.UGJL2
As you can imagine, I am quite unfamiliar with rooting and such. I do not trust myself with mods as last time I did the Bell Froyo 2.2 update through Kies and my phone had to be sent to repairs because it was bricked. Any info that would shed light on the situation would be great.
Please Help
Any help from fellow Bell SGS users would be greatly appreciated. From the Voodoo Project website, could I install the update through recovery mode or will that cause a huge problem for my phone?
If you are running JL2 you should be alright. They seemed to have resolved the majority of internal SD problems. Just read instructions VERY carefully and you should be fine. The easiest way to install a lagfix is to head over to the Android Dev. forum and download and install one of the Kernals. The Voodoo-based ones will automatically lag-fix for you when you reboot.
I recommend hardcore's Speedmod kernal. It has lagfix options (disabled by default) but is very user-friendly to install and use. You basically flash it then boot into recovery (volume up, home, power) and enable the options (including lag fix) you desire.
Thanks dpvu!

[Q] Android Market Web Store -- working on your rooted Cap?

Hey everyone. Got really excited about the Android Market Web Store's pushing app downloads to phone feature. So I went ahead and tested it out on four separate apps -- no dice.
My "Android Market Settings" page shows that the download was successful, but nothing happened on the phone end. Now, I've flashed tons of roms onto my phones, but I'm no CS major, so I could just have a boned up configuration.
I'm wondering if anyone had luck using the web store with their rooted Captivates with custom ROMs?
Thanks in advance!

I'm using the exact same kernel & modem, the only difference is that I am running the Phoenix 4.5 ROM. You said the push seemed to work then nothing happened? Can you elaborate a bit more. Did you have a chose of device to choose from? Make sure you also use the same account that logs into the market on your phone.
I am having the same issue. I am able to sign in and initiate a download but nothing gets pushed to the phone. I receive no errors and it does recognize that I have SGH-I897 on that account. What gives?
Same problem here. Sign it, choose phone, hit install ... nothing happens.

Works great on mine running Serendipity 4.3.
I'm rooted with Speedmod kernel on stock Rogers Froyo. I chose an app from my browser and it installed successfully over both wifi and data connection.
I'm running Serendipity 5.1 with speedmod k12t and I'm not having any problems with it.
Argh. So maybe it's the GingerborgMOD rom? What about market version? I currently have 2.2.11
Worked perfectly without needing to do anything here.

I'm running Market version 2.2.11 also, and its working... maybe try clearing Market data?
Quick update here before I gotta head out for work.
I did a master clear / Odin flash back to stock 2.1. The market web store push feature worked on the stock set up, of course, so from there I rooted and re-installed Gingerborg. The push continued to work after the flash to the new rom.
I think what I may have done was ran a wipe/master clear -after- flashing to stock, which may have nixed some OTA update or setting that would allow the web store push feature. Completely uneducated and speculative guess, but one thing I did notice before flashing to stock again was that I didn't have GTalk in my apps drawer. I'd get notices that someone had sent me a message, but when I'd touch the notification, it wouldn't open the app either.
So it could have been that when I ran the master clear, it pulled a bunch of stock Google applications off my phone, which for whatever reason weren't registered with my Titanium Backup files.
Long story short, Custom Rom > Master Clear > Stock > Tried Web Store Push once > One Click Root > Flash new custom rom seemed to work for me.
Cog 3.04, speedmod kernel and jl2 modem.. I can dl fine.. Only one wierd thing. Sometimes I ha e to manually switch to gsm only on metworl for it to download. Or place it in airplane mode then turn it off and it worlks fine

I upgraded Phoenix from 4.1 to 4.5 last night and it's still not working for me. I didn't flash to stock though, just a straight upgrade. Perhaps I'll try flashing stock tonight and see what happens.
I just tested it, and it successfully pushed and installed an app to my phone.
I currently using Perception 10.3.
works on my phoenix 3.5
Works perfect on firefly 2.0.5!
Works perfect on my Andromeda 2.0...
Swyped from my Andromeda Captivate via XDA app
Samsung Smart Touch
Any one find Samsung Smart Touch app in the market?
Works perfect for me Perception 10.2, SpeedMode k12t
work with perception 10.3.

[Q] Galaxy S wont update to FROYO 2.2

Right, firstly this is my first post, so please bare with me.
I have a (UK) Galaxy S that WAS running FROYO 2.2. I recently rooted the phone for various reasons only to find out that some features would not work. I then un-rooted the phone to return back to the standard running 2.2.
During the un-rooting process the phone crashed, and subsiquently would not reboot. I got round this by recovering it using ODIN Ver3.0......But its restored the phone to 2.1, Build Number ECLAIR.XWJMB, Kernel 2.6.29 rootSE-S603 #2, Baseband version I9000XXJM4.
Ive tried to update the system using Kies but it says that it isnt able to update and trying to update using ODIN didnt work. Can i get my phone back to running FROYO 2.2 that i loved so much?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated
Thanks Rob
PITS
I believe this thing happened to me also. I resolved it by checking if the .PIT as per this table http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-i9000.htm is compatible with the firmware i wanted to patch on my phone.
Hopefully it will solve your troubles too

[Q] Finding and Installing Android 2.2

Can anyone provide me a link or hook me up with the update file for Android 2.2 OS? I've searched and have not been able to find it... and Google doesn't seem to make it available.
Gingerbread is glitchy on my phone and rooting it has not resolved the issues (camera won't work, black screen locks me out of phone randomly or post phone call), so I would like to revert back to Froyo 2.2 to see if that fixes everything as I'm fairly confident, I didn't have these issues while running 2.2
Below are the details of my phone and what I'm currently running. Would I have to wipe the phone, install 2.2 then flash cynogen 7 again or can I manually install 2.2 and Cynogen will remain intact?
I just really need to find the Androis 2.2 OS file.
I appreciate the help.
Thank you in advance

How about looking in the wiki, under ROMs?
also arent the stock ROMs available in ROM manager? i believe they are, so just load up stock 2.2 from there. if not, cyan 6.1.1 is in ROM manager, and it was the epitome of froyo stability smoothness with tons of features on top of it.

[Q]about rooting/installing rom/kernel SGS. newbie here.

well im kinda new to SGS. i currently use Go Launcher EX as for my phone to look good. and install some games/apps.
what i want to know is what is the best root / kernel / rom. and what should be done first? updating my firmware to gingerbread or installing/flashing root/kernel/rom?
my phone is still froyo as well. just like newly bought SGS.

BUMP!! >.<
Look around some custome ROM to flash and lagfix it, after that you have gain root permission and many stuffs u can play around
What's the best way to root stock galaxy s with 2.3.4?
First of all you have to download a 2.3.4-firmware (I'd suggest JVS, it's 2.3.5) and then flash it with Odin (you know how? If no, just let me know and I'll explain it ).
After that just look for a kernel that fits your firmware and also flash it with Odin (PDA-filed) and you're done.

Should be fine with it, can you direct me to the Odin rom in question please? I take it that its pre-rooted with clockwork recovery?
You could post the steps as it's for a friend and I can direct your post to him.
Hey guys I have a related question regarding kernels, posting here to save creating more threads.
I've come from Froyo 2.1.1 with Voodoo Kernel. Only reason I've updated to JVR 2.3.4 is because I've read this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225879 and realised I can have glorious Voodoo sound again on newer firmware.
So I've gone ahead and followed this guide to update firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1139050
However I was unsuccesfuly in installing madrooster's kernel, through Odin I semi bricked and through CWM it gave an error. Perhaps because I am not rooted? However I was successful in installing Dark Core 2.6, I read that this had Voodoo sound but upon installing the Voodoo control plus and running it, no controls were available. It said phone needed to be rooted to load the driver....I'm really lost, I need help
Tried to flash kernel - Think I bricked phone
I tried to flash a dark core kernel using SGS kernel app. Phone rebooted and showed funny colours on the screen with a robotic voice giving commentary every now and again. Now just keeps rebooting and showing random colours on the screen. I have not backed up the phone, but contacts etc are on google. Can anyone help?
