Change Vodafone Kernel to Google Kernel

Hi,
I've just bought a new nexus one mobile phone from Egypt. Since the mobile was not officially released here, the only shops that sell it are the ones that import it from Europe...so lucky me i got my self a Vodafone Nexus one Mobile running Android 2.1-update1
After a long search on the internet i was able to update it to Android 2.2 (build FRF91). After another very long time trying to find the 2.2.1 update (build FRG83) i discovered that it wasn't released yet for the Vodafone mobiles. but some claim that by installing the FRG33 build Rom your kernel will completely change and thus you become a "Normal" nexus one
My questions are:
-Is the above true?
-How do i install this Rom?
-Does the process of installing the Rom need rooting my device?
-is there a simple tutorial for a noob (running Linux ubuntu) for rooting?
-Is it possible to root the mobile "Temporary" until I get to Build FRG83?
-Is there a high chance of Bricking the device?

Since you have AMOLED Nexus (otherwise it wouldn't be able to run 2.1), there is no problem flashing stock FRF91 on it.
Of course it requires rooting.
Read my signature, I hope you'll find your way from there easily. If any step in the directions below isn't clear - go to Wiki and find what it means and what needs to be done.
If you want stock 2.2.1:
Use 1-click root, install custom recovery (any), download stock FRF91, use the recovery to flash it, then download FRG83_from_FRF91 upgrade, rename to update.zip and put on SD card, go to the stock recovery (your custom recovery would be overwritten by then), flash update.zip.
If you want custom ROM:
Use 1-click root, install custom recovery, download and install custom ROM of your choice.

I would like to say that Android 2.2.1 has no major changes compare to Android 2.2.

I'm not sure about kernel version because I keep using third-party ROMs, but it's possible for FRG83 to have a different kernel than FRG91
-How do i install this Rom?
Stock FRG83 rom should be available to download somewhere, once you have unlocked bootloader and have a recovery (Amon or Clockwerk) installed, you should be able to flash FRG83 rom in recovery.
-Does the process of installing the Rom need rooting my device?

It's not necessary to root device temporarily, because once you have acquired root privilege, you can play a lot more tricky things, so there's no reason to become unrooted again, but I've heard from people who would like to receive update OTA, they have to unroot in order to get OTA update properly.

Nexus One is now developer phone, so it's unlikely to be broken only by flashing new ROM

Wrong info. That's exactly why people should read before asking questions - because the answers they get might be partially correct at best.
1. Kernel versions don't matter, the OP just doesn't know ROM from Kernel. He should read more. He wants stock Google ROM.
2. Stock FRG83 is available from the same Wiki I've mentioned above, and some reports say that it doesn't like to be flashed from custom recovery and doesn't proceed. So I didn't suggest it, and suggested FRF91 which 100% flashes.
3. CyanogenMod Wiki only has 1 root method - unlocking the bootloader. It's definitely not the easiest one, and some people might want to keep their bootloader locked. I don't believe OP is one of them, since he bought a phone for unsupported country and warranty won't mean anything to him, but at least he needs to be educated about the differences. In Wiki he does, in your post - he doesn't.
4. When you flash stock ROM, you lose root - as simple as that. If he wants stock FRG83 - he WILL lose root, and if he wants it rooted - he'll have to go to Wiki again and see, how to root. If he has unlocked bootloader - it'll be just a bit easier.
5. Since he already has Froyo, chances are his radio is updated. If they aren't - the stock ROM contains radio, and if it's not up to date on the system - it will be flashed. Flashing radio incorrectly (terminating it in the middle, power failure, etc) is the only way to brick the device. So if his radio is updated - there's no chance he'll brick it, if it's not - it depends on if he'll touch the phone during the radio flash or not.

well I'm still kinda confused, so I'll try to explain a little better what I got in mind first.
I read this post (google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=5fe9454b7c7261e7&hl=en) in the nexus one forums that explains the difference between 2 kernels one exclusive to Vodafone (Europe?) and one to other Carriers in the USA.
The kernel version I have ([email protected] #1) get updates like a month after other one and I believe I have to insert a Vodafone sim for it to work. what I read online (can't remember where) is by installing the FRG33 leaked rom on the device it basically changes the Kernel version to the US version ([email protected]#1) so that I can easily update to FRG83, as till now the Vodafone kernel still didn't receive the FRG83 update OTA.
I tried downloading the file FRG83 from FRF91 and it simply gives me a failed to verify file whole-signature and never completes the update.
So reading online, I'm still confused on what exactly to do to install this leaked rom. Now correct me if I'm wrong but what I understand from this thread I have to gain root privileges to install custom recovery and then install roms and solve my problem. right?
I'll be following this thread (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598) to root my device is it the correct one?

The kernel versions are identifying ROM variants, other than that they're of no use.
You can't apply FRG83-from-FRF91 update to Vodafone ROM, you need to install stock Google ROM first.
Yes, this is the correct thread to root the device.
Or you could do another thing that you wanted, and it'll probably be simpler:
Go to Wiki, download stock FRG33 image, rename to PASSIMG.ZIP, put on SD card, reboot the phone into bootloader. It'll automatically apply.
Then either wait for the OTA to FRG83, or apply the update.zip as I suggested above - only use FRG83-from-FRG33, that you can find linked in the first link, or in Wiki between "All stock ROMs and OTAs".

I've downloaded the FRG33 Rom and installed it using the PASSIMG.zip method. now the last problem, hopefully, is that i can't find a FRG83 from FRG33 OTA and i don't get any automatic OTA on my nexus one phone.
i tried the link but it seems that the any file on the google server was removed or something as it says page cannot be found and i can't find the file on the wiki.
any help here? and way to force the OTA to start on my nexus one or does anyone have the file or a mirror to the download?

Then, hit menu>>about phone>>system updates to see if anything is there.

Still nothing I dial it and get the checkin succeeded notification but when i go to the system updates it just says my system is up to date.
P.S: sorry for not searching but it's like 3 in the morning and I've been dealing with this for like hours....my brain hurts.
edit: tried using the passimg.zip method with this file (dl3.htc.com/RomCode/Source_and_Binaries/signed-passion-img-FRG83_0923.zip) which i found on the rom section of the wiki but after checking the passimg.zip the bootloader just reboots itself and returns to the main menu without doing anything.

Yes, it's reported that FRG83 doesn't like to be installed by PASSIMG method.
You could try renaming to update.zip and flashing in recovery.

Tried that but still nothing gives me an error: E: signature verification failed.

Well, in that case, if you really want FRG83 - you have to root and apply this update through a custom recovery.
The root and the custom recovery will be gone once you apply it.

ok so i rooted my phone using the rageagainstthecage method since the 1 click root does seem work for FRGXX build. then i used Rom Manager to install this file (http://loadbalancing.modaco.com/dow.../update-nexusone-FRG83-stock-radio-signed.zip)
now the last problem, not really sure if it is anyway, after the rom was installed i lost root privileges as u said but the recovery remained custom (clockwork mod) now I don't really care if it's stock or not, but am i going to get OTA updates with no problem even with a custom recovery or do i have to put it back to stock?
EDIT: I've Extracted the recovery.img from a stock FRG83 Rom and installed using the Flash_image method now i've got the stock Recovery back, I believe that this way everything is ok to receive OTAs in the future..

[Q] Not sure about installing themes/ROMs

Recently I installed the ROM Cognition, and want to theme this ROM.
As I understand, I download the theme, rename to 'update.zip', and install via recovery mode just like I did the ROM.
Here is where my question comes into play:
1. Some themes say they only are compatible with certain numbers/letters, such as: J16, JFW or things like this. How do I know if my phone will work with specific themes? I want to make sure that I do not brick my phone.
2. If I want to install a new ROM on my phone, should I flash with Odin back to Eclair 2.1, re-root, and install the new ROM? Or can I do this from ROM Manager with a backup of my Apps on Titanium Backup (and how do you export this to work on new ROMS)?

you should not be renaming ANYTHING to update.zip. you should be flashing roms and themes through clockwork mod recovery....

In most cases you can flash one rom over another successfully.

Need to check what type of modem/kernel you have currently on your phone for compatibility. Go to Settings -> About Phone and look for the last three letters under Baseband Version - that will tell you if <x> Theme will work for your phone.
Also - it is highly suggested that you backup your framework-res.apk and twframework-res.apk before attempting to run the theme. This will prevent you from having to re-flash your entire phone. (Will need to use root explorer and be familiar with ADB commands to do this)
Make sure to follow the instructions on the person who created the theme. Most will tell you to use ROM Manager to install the theme.zip. Unless they specifically tell you to rename it to update.zip - don't.

It is highly suggested that you ODIN 1 Click back to stock before updating to a new ROM. If it is just an update then sure you would be able to install over the top of the existing ROM.
Although you "could" install a new ROM over the top of the "old" ROM - you could very likely have issues - starting fresh with going back to Stock prevents you from having any issues that might arise over flashing a new ROM.

Baseband of modem has nothing to do with compatibility of themes. You could be using a jpy or jk3 Rom framework base and be using the same jl3 or jk4 modem which is what is reflected in baseband version under about phone.
If Rom developer is nice they will reflect framework base in the build number, otherwise they usually say in the op for the Rom.

[Q] Noob question about upgrading CM7

First off, much thanks to everyone involved with CM7. The Nook Color is a fantastic Android tablet thanks to your work, I sincerely appreciate it.
I have successfully installed a CM7 nightly build, but I am interested in trying out the recent one which fixes video playback issues. Can I just download the updated ZIP file and install it using Clockwork Recovery on my recovery SD card? Is there another, perhaps better way? Will I lose anything (apps, settings, etc?)

I just did this myself.
What I did:
Open Rom Manager and manually do a backup of your current rom. Its easier to name it something YOU understand that way.
The NC will reboot and do the back then go back to the current rom.
Then download the video test and flash it using Rom Manager- Flash ROM from SD card. I wiped data and cache but did NOT backup current rom, since I had already done so manually. (I am not sure if that is required but I thought it better to test the video clean.)
Once I tested the video (which was perfect) I restored my backup and had my fully configured CM7 with Tablet Tweaks and OC kernel running.

Did you just flash the CM7 tablet tweaks through Rom Manager? You flash the tweaks over an already installed version of Cyan7 correct?

You know, I hadn't been thinking about it until I saw your question but I have been doing extra work- the Tablet Tweaks is the full rom not just an update to a rom....
So the way to get them installed is to find the latest version and flash it through Rom Manager (a "yes" to your question) and then flash the OC kernel through Rom Manager. That one IS an update instead of a full rom so can be flashed over the existing rom.

Let me try to make this stuff clear for any who follow:
*Best to get the regular CM7 nightly installed and working correctly first, I think- less chance of bugs.
*video test and Tablet Tweaks versions are both FULL ROMS and will replace the current rom you are running. Data wipe should not be required for either, but if you have problems try wiping data and do it again.
*the Overclock kernel can be flashed OVER the current rom and will not replace it, just add to it.

[Q] SU has been removed ROM Manager does not find Disk Image

I rooted my device months ago, when my device was running ICS. When Samsung released Jelly Bean update, I downloaded the chinese version and flashed it using ROM Manager, before doing this I had backed up my current rom and saved it to my external SD card.
The Jelly Bean ROM that I had flashed to my handset drains my battery within a couple of hours, so I am looking to restore from the backup I made.
My problem is, when I flashed the ROM, my SU Binary files have gone missing from 'System/Bin/SU' and ROM Manager and Super SU no longer works. I don't know if this has anything to do with ROM Manager not being able to find the Back-Up Disk Image I have on my SD Card or not?
My question is, what is the easiest way to fix this? Can I root my device based on the ICS method I used originally, or will this not work due to having a different ROM? Can I just download the Binary files, then drag and drop into the system/bin folder? If so where can I get the binary files from?
Or can I restore my handset to the back-up I created and stick with custom ICS?

Without root ROM Manager cannot do any thing.
It's normal that you lost root after flashing a new ROM, except if you flash using Odin Mobile and choose keep root option.
Now at first you have to get back root, either follow : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360,
or flash a Philz kernel associated to your new ROM. That kernel includes root and is safe.

I think I may have stumbled across some other posts relating to the same problem I am having. It seems to be the sdcard0 issue.

The best you can do is to install safe kernel from phillz, make full wipes, install firmware of your choice and then root it again. I suggest you this bcs when you flash ROMs, w/o doing wipes your batter life wont be so good.

Noob still on CM 7.1 needs KK.

Every time I trie to update to the latest ROMs I notice they specifically target the new bootloader. I have no idea what the old vs new bootloader dilemma is about but I bet my device runs the old one, I read somewhere the white LG logo on startup hints to an old bootloader,
My question is how to upgrade my bootloader or ROM directly to Kitkat the easiest way possible, I bought my handset already CMed and unrooted but I have never done it myself.

for tonyps kitkat , the only one for daily usage workign at the moment. you need his version of twrp 2.6 or as i know the cwm version 6.0.4.7, which can be found somewhere in the development forum.

They are New Bootloader only! The process seems as easy as full wipe + flash the zip (my phone came with ROM Manager 4.5.0.1 with old recovery) but I fear my bootloader in incompatible. Is there a way to update or something.
Also does my sd card and all applications get removed, and how to back them up, also if I brick my device does the recovery still work to flash the back up or what? very noob I know, I learned alot of terms but never managed to make good sense of it all, thank you.............
Oh one minute my ROM Manager has an Install ROM from SD Card button, can I do it right inside ROM Manager?

With that you can backup/resotre and change the bootloader and alot more AiO-Toolkit
If you change the bootloader layout, as i know all stuf will be removed. so make a nandroid backup, if your new rom is not working and make a sdcard backup(also in aio) to get appdata back if you want.
If you dont want to download all apps new after having new rom use titanium backup. the recovery is not breakable. it will always work. not important if you **** your rom

As you do have CM 7.1 installed, I guess you've got a custom recovery installed too? I don't think you can directly use ROM manager to install a kernel, but you can use ROM manager to boot into recovery mode and flash the zip from there Just be sure to make a nandroid backup, just in case KK isn't compatible with 7.1.
If you ever want to get tonyp's CM 11 though, the AIO toolkit, as @Zubeplanet pointed out, is really easy to use to get the new bootloader.
