Hi All
I have yesterday updated my T-Mobile UK Galaxy S to Froyo using the regedit method.
All seemed good and I was very pleased with myself for doing it!
But....
Since the upgrade I have had many Force Close's and there seems to be a fair amount of lag.
The main issue is the messaging app opens but when you go to open a message it FC's.
I am running Launcher Pro so will try running standard Samsung launcher for a bit.
Anyone else had this?
Do a factory reset!!
Yeah I too had loads of problems after the upgrade like you. Very slow, crashing, reboots. Although TWlauncher never worked properly for me before, even on 2.1.
Did a factory reset using the 3button reboot and it's been fine since. I was surprised that this didn't clear the memory card, so still have all my files - which I wasn't expecting.
Thanks guys that did the trick.
And forced me into a bit of phone housekeeping as well!

So I love froyo and for the past week that I've had it (via ota) it has been really great, but today I began having these sudden problems:
I can't install certain apps (market or sideloaded), even though I have plenty of room for them.
Random apps that are normally stable just crash out of the blue.
The phone just keeps slowing down and things are taking longer than they should for both 2.1 and 2.2.
The phone crashed today, meaning it decided to reboot on its own accord, once when I was running a few apps at once (something that I do almost every time I pick up the phone) and was switching between them, the second time was when I had some background processes and I was browsing the web.
I was just wondering if anyone else was experiencing these problems, and if you are did it just happen suddenly one day like me or was it from the beginning? I also want to know if anyone has suggestions or a diagnosis that I should consider before emailing google.
Thanks for all the help,
Liam
Try resetting the phone to Factory (Settings-Privacy). Or if you're rooted...Wipe.

Does that wipe apps, settings and all other data, and is there a way to get it all back?
I've had a 16gb Samsung Galaxy S on Three in the UK since they launched last year, and it's the only Android phone I've used.
It's pretty laggy, but since I'd read a lot about Galaxy lag online, I assumed this was to be expected.
However, I had to help a colleague with a problem on their HTC Wildfire today (a lower spec phone, as far as I know), and was amazed how much more responsive than my Galaxy S.
It didn't seem to show any of the laggy, hanging-ey behaviour I experience. I have more apps installed than the Wildfire, but I'm quite careful not to install anything that's going to run at startup or cause problems (mostlly just games, no widgets, etc.)
As an example, if I turn the phone on clean, wait for everything to be loaded and ready (media scanning to finish, etc.) then poke the "Market" button, it takes 28 seconds for it to be loaded and responsive. Close that, poke the Facebook button, over 20 seconds until I'm shown the news feed. Sometimes when the phone rings on my desk, I literally won't be able to get it to respond enough to answer the call before the caller hangs up. If I try to switch from program to program, I end up getting quite a lot of frustrating 20-30s hangs and pauses. This is all on a decent wifi connection, so the problem isn't data related.
The question is - how laggy should a Galaxy S be? Would it work better if I added an SD card (with the 16gb phone memory, I didn't see the need)? Is it worth installing a lagfix under Froyo (I tried one back on 2.1, but didn't notice a huge amount of difference)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I think its sometimes very busy rebuilding it's wifi connection. Or some other process.
Am not sure.

I didn't see any speed difference with SD card IN/OUT so i don't think you will have faster phone by inserting it (SD card).
Why don't you try a reset and see if that works? Also are you on eclair or froyo because that would make a world of difference if you upgraded
I just got my sgs from bell Canada last Tuesday. It has all stock with launcherpro and a few Widgets. So far (knock wood) its been a big step up over my HTC dream. I experience maybe 10 seconds of startup lag and then for the rest of the day its awesome. My firmware version is the newest one bell offers (jl2 Frito). What android version are you running?

That's exactly my experience. The only way to solve it is with a good lagfix and/or flashing JPY firmware
This will get almost instant loading of apps and only minor lags when switching apps. It's still slow when scrolling icons and such... my previous phone, iphoe 3g, is still faster than this crap-phone
Cheers,

My Galaxy S was laggy as hell brand new out of the box. Sometimes it would hang for what seemed like 10 seconds. I didn't like the Samsung launcher anyway, so I did my homework, made sure I could get into 3-button download mode, and then rooted, wiped and flashed a custom Froyo ROM. I've tried a few ROMs since then and have landed on Insanity with EXT4 lagfix.
Now my Galaxy S is _awesome_ ... I don't even bother overclocking it, everything is smooth.
try a task killer and set it up to auto kill when screens goes off done a few tests with it ,one with no killer and one with and the one with was faster and had no lag fix running too go to the market and get quadrant standard try it for yourself and see
What's the current firmware you're using ? I suggest flashing to JPY and testing it out.
Update to JPY!
If not possible, install a lagfix on your current ROM/kernel.
The amount of lag you describe is terrible, I have never seen it that bad...
I don't think the lag should be that bad, I did experience some occassional lag back on eclair, but never exceeded 5-10 seconds. Usually after loading whatever that app was once, it'd be okay on the next open too.
Since I've upgraded to JPY i see 1-2 second lag extremely rarely.
Maybe you can get a task manager and see if anything is hogging memory?
Thanks for all the responses. The firmware is FROYO.XXJPO, so I'll definitely try flashing to JPY and will report back! Thanks so much for the tip!
I am on SGS #2 atm and im trying to stress test it using the HD video method. I have noticed random apps starting to FC. I guess my real question is, Are there certain apps that are more likely to FC compared to others? I noticed the phone gets REALLY slow at loading as it reaches the drive capacity, however, once i delete all the junk videos, the speed returns to normal. Ive also noticed the FC happens when i open too man apps.
Are there any other clear indicators?
Thanks!
Yes,
It's about to go.
Fair well~
Mine did that not too long ago. I was playing Game Dev Story and it got all laggy. So i reboot and i started getting loads of force closes. COuldnt even boot because LauncherPro kept fc. so i reset to factory and speed came back and no fc so far ( maybe one per day..) Strangely , this came right after flash from ODIN for the first time. Although i only flashed a new KERNEL which is speedmod. I NEVER had any problems before that and had my phone since OCT. Anyways, updated to K12O and still on a stock - rooted JL2. Lets pray for the better!
Yep.
Mine started to force close on my email app. Then when I got it working, I tried to attach a photo to an email when the email and picture gallery crashed. Restarted the phone and I kept getting all kinds of FC's on different apps every 1 minute or so. Reinserted the battery, turned it on and it was all over.
I just want the damn thing to die so i can send it in for a new one from samsung...

Well the last thing that did it for me was I had backed up all my apps with myroot then formatted the internal card. Loaded all my apps back to my phone, then I did a mass update on all the apps at the same time. That's when my phone was unresponsive and FC's occurred consistently until the entire phone crashed.
I'm on a VZW tab and when apps force close, I get the 1 vibration followed by a succession of quick vibrations, then the popup notification of an app force closing.
However, twice now, my tab has had the vibrations as if an app is going to force close, but no window pops up. On top of that, the vibrations just repeat in that order over and over again approx every 30 sec. I've had to reboot each time to get this to stop. I've tried the built in task manager to kill all running apps, but only launcher pro is showing. I've tried using ATK to kill everything running also, but that doesn't help.
Has anyone ever had an issue remotely like this?
I have the 2 vibration isue but not the other.

i also had the vibration force closing issue when i was on stock froyo.
but when i upgraded to overcome rom and also the gingerbread stock rom.
apps became more stable and has less forcecloses than before.
there was a significant improvement.
are you still on stock froyo?
Yes i recomend upgrading to 2.3.3
My tmobile tab used to do that on 2.2. A little less on 2.2.1
Havent seen it yet on 2.3.3
Ifyou dont want 2.3.3, and i wouldnt blame you, go the overcome route.
Don't Panic

I'll have to see what the best GB rom is for the VZW tab. Then netflix would likely work also!

my tab did the same thing today twice in a row. this is the first time it has done it i rebooted then hasent done it again
Solved!!!
So this issue has been getting progressively worse, so I went through app by app in the application and service menu and started force stopping them one by one. Turns out it was lookout mobile's background service causing this. The service, not the app, kept force closing and restarting, hence the force close vibrations, but no popup.
I uninstalled and reinstalled it clean and will continue to monitor. So far the issue has not returned.
update: after a reboot, the issue came back, so i just uninstalled completely. After a reboot, no issue.
Hey all,
I am currently running my VZW Galaxy Tab with a stock 2.2 Froyo build that is rooted and running Boushh's KhasMek Kernel V5.
Ever since I installed that kernel, I have been experiencing constant force closes. It's really not any one app either, it is most of them. So far, I have put the freeze (via Titanium Backup) on all the apps that have FC'd a lot that I don't use. Maps was one of the biggest culprits. Facebook FCs a lot as well, and the only way to fix it is to go into app management and clear data. Similar issues with random games and such as well.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiple apps, and this helps for a time, but doesn't last too long. I have tried switching launchers, just in case it was somehow related, but it doesn't seem to be.
Basically, whenever I leave the tablet on idle for more than a few minutes, when I unlock it something hangs and I get an FC of a random app.
And a lot of times, it just does the single vibrate, followed by two quick ones, and nothing comes up as having FC. But, in the mean time, the tablet is unusable until it hits the second set of vibrations.
This is extremely annoying and is preventing usage of the tablet for periods of time. So, I am wondering, is anyone else experiencing this? If so, what have you done to fix it? At this point, I am inclined to just revert back to stock, though I would rather not.
Thanks for any insight.
As of now, I am constantly getting
com.google.process.gapps
force closing.
