So when I first got the captivate I was disappointed that my buddy with the incredible could side-load apps and I could not... So what did I do? I rooted it and enabled side-loading... now that was over a month or more ago and I have yet to install one non-market app... What are you guys using for apps that are not on the market?
MiKandi, for the gay porn.
Seriously though, I don't think most people sideload non-market apps, or at least I haven't really found anything worthwhile outside of the market, especially since the captivate comes with Swype pre-installed. I've sideloaded some beta software that isn't found in the market, like firefox mobile, and some other stuff that disappeared from the market after my 2.2 upgrade (new york times mobile), but none of them are must-have apps. Most of the sideloading I do is just to test my own programs, since the sdk's simulator runs slow on my computer. It's nice to have the option though, even if you don't currently need it.
Also, if I remember right, some game companies don't sell their stuff on the market, like assassin's creed and whatnot. I'd imagine you'd have to be able to install non-market apps to install those.

I'm more likely to buy an app if I can try it first, but let's just ignore the grey area in favor of your simplistic, black and white worldview. Piracy bad!

err, your logic is entirely flawed just fyi. if you knew anything about the android market, you'd know you have up to 24 hours after purchasing an app to refund and uninstall it. so you saying "I search for apps so I can try them before I purchase them" is, at best, ridiculously misinformed.
do the right thing and buy the app, if it isn't to your liking, refund it. on any other platform, where this process doesn't exist, I'd give you a break. but android specifically has this setup to avoid exactly what you're saying you do.
edit: should add that the main benefit of enabling sideloading for me is restoring apps through titanium backup after reflashing my phone.

Please highlight the sentence where I said anything close to "I pirate apps." I'll wait...
Seriously, you're putting words in my mouth. But for the sake of argument, I'll add that sometimes 24 hours just isn't enough time to determine whether an expensive app like Doggcatcher (a $7 podcast app) is the best available option. I need time to see how it works in different situations, ie how well it streams while I'm at work vs my house, bluetooth vs line-out, how it reacts to different roms, etc. I was forced to take a gamble and buy the app without testing it in every situation I encounter.
If you read my actual statement rather than simply making up your own, you'd see that all I was saying is that there's a gray area. It's more complicated than piracy bad, riaa good.

Tunee music. But I think I saw in the market now. I used it for a couple songs then thought to myself "self this can't be legal" downloading almost any song you can think of to your phone for free... "self, maybe the record companies made tunee music so they can get richer off poor people that download music for free"
So I do NOT want to be like the lady that downloaded 24 songs and now has to pay something like 1.5 million dollars now. So bye bye it went. I dont have a spare 1.5 mill
But it is a cool app. I originally had to.sideload it. Got it from tuneemusic.net Again I think I saw it.in the market.now.
EDIT:Yep.it is the market now. Just searched for it but DIDNT download

When I was on WM6.1 I was using .lit files and Microsoft Reader. At least it remembered what page I am on.
Now I use WordPlayer app to read ePub format. www.Baen.com remembers what books you ever got and I can always re-download those in ePub format. WordPlayer will also "talk" to Calibre Library (Free & runs on your "big" computer). Calibre will convert any format eBook to any format. Calibre will also act as a Reader on your desktop. You will eventually move all eBooks into it.
I end up using WordPlayer setup with a black screen (less power) and white letters. Dim or brightning as needed.
Understand that by giving away the first books in a series (or older books) by their top Authors, Baen is like a Drug Dealer giving you a Free Taste!

All,
I've only had my NC for about a week.
My first task was to root it, get my applications loaded, bookmarks in my browser, and of course PLAY!
I'm now getting around to downloading some books (especially FREE ones). Picked up a few from B&N, a few in Aldiko, plan to register my library card so I can get some form the public library. Then, amazon's kindle store - OMG - thousands of Free titles to choose from. So, if you're looking for classics. Make sure you get the Kindle app.
I've tried most of the free readers and find them all clunky so I keep coming back to the stock application.
BTW: depending where you live, you may be able to get a free library card in a nearby large city in your state or the capitol.
For example, all Massachusetts residents can get a Boston card and all NY residents can get an NYC card.
Also, for $15/year anyone can get a Philladelphia card.
Kindle for everything I buy. Stock app for anything I have to sideload.
My wife gets nookbooks from the library. Thank god too, I'd be broke with in the month.
I've used the stock app and the kindle one and found them about equal. I guess the preference just comes down to the differences between the catalog selection.
I may actually start reading more now.

Stock here. I have yet to find another app that reads as well.
I use Aldiko Premium. It works better for me than the stock app.
I've tested a lot of readers and I think what FBReader is the most perfect reader for NC. Much better for me than Moon, Laputa, Aldiko etc. Try it, it's free on Market.
Laputa Reader Pro
Thanks for the feedback.
So many books and so little time to read... But, it is great to be able to have a couple thousand books in the palm of my hand.
Hi guys,
I really want to love the Xoom, I like android a lot and the hardware is too good (at least at this point)
But I not in place where I can drop my iPad for good. The reasons are pure app specific, if I get these decent on Xoom... it's bye bye iPad.
So this is a quasi-'need help' thread. to double check if I'm not missing anything
1. Magazine app - Something like Zinio, I depend too much on it and couldn't find even an ETA on when Zinio will be available for Android
~ Solved. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11939617&postcount=5
2. Comics reader - I know we have the Comics app but I need a cbr/cbz reader. I tired AVC but doesn't seam to work on Honeycomb
~ Solved. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11939617&postcount=6
3. A UI-nice IM app. I love the Gtalk app but need facebook and skype IM app
4. Netflix app.
5. Tablet specific twitter, facebook, foursquare apps. I know iPad doesn't have FB or FS apps but this would be nice
6. Now the big big deal... I consider all these tablets as a 'consumption' devices, and the biggest thing I 'consume' is movies and tv shows...
The best thing about iPad is, I just launch iTunes app then rent a movie, wait for sometime and then enjoy the movie...
Is there a way I can get this experience on a Xoom? I know that right now most of the HD formats play on tegra but is there any hope to get this?
~~~~~~~~~~
Disclaimer: Please don't pounce on this post and call me a iFreak. I'm not trying to diss the Xoom or Android. I did search and try apps to see if I could get all this... but couldn't find a way. So before I make a decision I just wanted some opinions.
thanks
Don't forget the completely absent Google Docs app! Someone please tell me its in the works....
If you download Spare parts and unselect Compatibility mode AVC works great. i have been using it for days now with no FC.
Have you tried jj comic viewer for comics? i cant confirm it works on 3.0 but it is the best ive found pre HC
A Market app that works...
Searches properly so you can find those Apps you want that may exist but you would never know.
Recognizes applications that have updates properly.
Doesn't randomly open other app's.
Actually installs Apps the first time you ask for them.
And why Google is at it, Tablet Section - more direct support on the Web Market while the programmer who is assigned to the tablet market app figures out how to code - bug fix.
(yes I am frustrated with the market today)
I don't remember if manga watcher loads cbz and crz files but in general it is really good app. It was recently updated to load local files from sd so it might be worth checking out. I know the dev does alot of work and updates it frequently. You might even write him and ask if he plans to add support for these files if they aren't already supported. I bought the full app and have been happy with it ever since.
All I have to say is Samurai Executioner.
I tried Zanio on my Xoom and it just FC on startup.
Looks like we not have a real use for the stock Nook Reader app much longer.
According to this the new tablet app can be used to read magazines.
I haven't had a chance to check this out yet on CM7 as I'm at work and my NC is at home. Anyone try it yet? Does it even see the NC running CM7 as a tablet and give us the right version?
Ive been using it since last night and it is freaking awesome. Do yourself a favor and dl ASAP.
I downloaded it and so far it's a little clunky. At first it didn't see any of my books, but then they showed up. Then I ordered the free trial of Maxim, but I don't see the magazine anywhere. Maybe it just takes a little getting used to but so far it's bugging me.
I couldn't find anything in the press release on gizmodo (but I scanned pretty quickly)... will it play read-to-me children's books?
My Analog subscription magazine now shows up on my C7 Nook App! Woohoo.
Time to re-subscribe!
Sweet.
Does it have the word lookup feature? Having a dictionary at my fingertips was awesome with the stock reader.
Is there a way to side load ebooks to the nook app?
For me the Nook Reader is very sluggish in the menus & I can only se my B&N downloaded books & mags. Nothing shows in My files & I have sideloaded several books. Quite a few FC, so I don't know what to think. I like the page turn animation a lot. Great feedback that the page was turned. MAybe I need to try to reinstall??
book title and page number at top of page annoying, anyone know how can to get back to 2.5?
Can't find the app in market. Is there something I have to do/tweak first?
Using CM7.02 on NC...
Update: Market Enabler did the trick. Had to "be" in the US. Can't buy anything though, seems you have to have an US-creditcard as well. Workaround for this?
The market has a Soonr Workplace app, which allows collaboration of work. Has anyone tried it yet, and does it allow annotation of all kinds of files with the S Pen, which is what the Soonr app is supposed to do?
When i looked into it, it seams to be a trial software package, after 30 days its a months fee....ouch.
Hmm...thanks! Someone on the market commented that it's a virus or something.
Well, I'm hoping the Soonr app comes out soon as it's free! Or if there are some mods/apps that allow annotating of microsoft documents with the S Pen.
Its free because its a trial period, then you pay monthly.
i think no , the soonr app for the Galaxy note is called Soonr scribble and its "comming soon" according to samsung , they have videos of that app on youtube , but i just couldnt find it anywhere , guess we will have to wait.
on the other hand , u can annotate PDFs using ezpdf , i find it not that productive and quite annoying sometimes with ezpdf (due to small issues that require tweaking) , hope soonr scribble will be the best all in 1 annotation app for the GNote
Yes, it's quite cumbersome and altogether exasperating trying to annotate using EZPDF. It's great for just about everything except that!
You know what? I was poking around the S Choice app today when I saw Soonr Scribble listed for sale. There was a note to register online* for the free version (go to www.soonr.com/galaxynote) of the app, but when I did so, I received the message that I will be informed once the app is publicly released.
I hope it comes sooner rather than later, pun intended!
BTW, you need to click on the phone rather than the red register free trial icon on the top right corner. That's for Soonr Workplace I believe.
been a wild goose chase trying to get the soonr scribble. when i registered earlier, all i got was the other soonr software and was told that i would be able to get soonr scribble soon.
just a couple of days ago, i saw it on the samsung apps costing several dollars with a caveat that if i register at soonr, i would be able to download a free copy. but when i wrote in to soonr about the free copy, their response was that they do not know when samsung and market is gonna release it and it is beyond their control. Plus they did not address my concern about where I could download a copy, as samsung had said. What a confusion.
I don't mind paying for the app but just needed to get a trial version first lest it be a junk piece of software. With market at least there is a 15 min trial period but currently scribble is on samsung apps which does not have a trial period. right?
You're right. I don't mind paying as well but want to try it our first. Thanks for sharing your experience with us
Please everybody who have tried Soonr app, give their review or just opinion about the features of this application! I hope that it can annotate ppt and pptx files directly with S pen so that Galaxy Note can be used as a general tool for presentation.
Hi guys.
Soonr Scribble allows you to annotate in any major Microsoft Office format (.doc/x, .xls/x, .ppt/x) as well as .PDFs.
The app is free for a limited time. Signing up for a free 30 day trial account will include 5GB of storage and allow 2 seats and 2 guests. You can always upgrade storage and team-sizes to fit your needs.
We expect to full go live within a week or so and will keep everyone updated.
Thanks for the reply, Soonr! I can't wait! It's been announced on CES.
Hmm...I just chatted with Ryan on Soonr's website and he says it should be out end of the month. Yay!
Now it's been the end of the month, but still no news about Soonr Scribble for Galaxy Note. Why it takes too long time?
I don't know either. Smoothing out some bugs I suppose...
Hope they keep to their word. I've been checking S Choice and Samsung Apps twice a day for the past few days.
Soonr Scribble
I was just checking on the market to see if it showed up, IT DOES!!!!
But... not letting me download it yet, says its not compatible with any of my devices:
check out the link and let me know if you can download:
https://market.android.com/details?...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5zb29ucnNjcmliYmxlIl0.
confirmed "No compatible device found"
Soonr Scribble Now available on Android Market, Get it while its Free!!!!
Once installed, you will need to create an account with them using an email address before you can use the app, have not used the app yet so cant comment on how good or bad it is.
Thanks, Hasc. I'm the OP and I downloaded the app this morning! It's available on the android market as well as via Samsung apps.
Before you can use the app, it will download a What is Soonr.ppt file (7.3MB). It took me a while to realise that (You'll also need to register for an account first.) So you do need to have your Wifi or 3G turned on. Be forewarned that if it's free Wifi that you're using, the downloading can take quite a while.
After you have scribbled on the file, you will also need Wifi or 3G to upload (=update) the file. I chose "Save for offline use in settings", and it updates the file once I turn on my Wifi.
I think the app works fairly well though I would have preferred a tutorial or a more helpful screen than what you see when you first start out. I'll also like to see an eraser instead of just an undo button, as I can't make changes after the file is updated. Scribble to text conversion will also be great, and I hope that's not a pipe dream!
Any thoughts about this app? I haven't used it much, frankly, so I would like to hear from others.
Had a quick play with it on the GNote (Scribble version) and it does work well and seem useful BUT I personally think the pricing is too high (unless you are guaranteed to use it frequently enough to justify it of course).
I might be interested if there was a "per GB" pay as you go model, but wouldn't be using it enough to justify EUR 9.99 a month minimum.
Uninstalled already!
so far i have *not* found it to be user friendly...i could not seem to get it to work by just playing around.
there seems to be a battery drain with the program too.
after one day, i uninstalled it. i was particularly disappointed as i was very much looking forward to the program.
