I desperately want to keep my Galaxy S. But then there's this huge issue (45 pages at time of this post):
[Q] Why my Galaxy S locks up?! (Comatose Syndrome on going investigation)
Sorry, can't link to this as a noob.
It seems to be undetermined whether this is hardware or software. If I get the idea that a lot of people are holding on to their phone, with a positive outlook on this issue being software related (and thus fixable), I might do the same.
(I have 9 days left of my original 30 for exchange through Bell. I know some say 60 days, but others have said you have to get in the que for a replacement before 30.)
So....keeping or not keeping?
people on froyo have reported the comatose problem is gone after froyo
it's up to you to wait for froyo or not
you can install froyo and try for yourself
I had thoses issue on the first one I got, wich I've rooted and voodoo'ed and then I got a weird connection issue (USB wouldn't plug, charging neither)
Since then, I've returned the first one and decided to keep the device "stock" (no rooting, no voodoo or any lag fix) and I don't have any problem so far, besides the accurancy of GPS (compare to my old Vogue, I have a 200m difference on a 6km run, so lets say 3% margin of error on GPS) depending on applications.
So, if I where you, I'd go back to stock and test it a couples of days. If it goes bad again, get it replaced.
My phone is a virgin. It's stock and always have been...never defiled or violated. Yet the coma problem is unacceptable...it happens way to frequently. I'm band limiting to resolve it (other people report this is a workaround), but ideally I don't want to do this b/c I want to be on 3G.
What I want to know is are people keeping their "comatosing" phones because they believe the coma problem will be fixed with the right s/w? If so, I'll keep mine with the same optimism (hopefully justified).

On several occasions I find that my att tilt had spontaneously switched to flight mode. This has serious consequences for me since I depend on my phone for my work. I am a physician, only recently I carried a beeper, cell phone, and a PDA, to handle my paging, calling back and the several apps I use daily. It was wonderful to exchange all three for a relatively compact machine. But this issue if not resolved it will certainly cause me to revert to a different system. I am in critical care and time is of essence, it is simply a matter of life or death that I am contacted in a timely manner when needed. It is unacceptableto work under these unreliable conditions. Idealy I would like to comletely disable/remove flight mode as I have no use for it, or stop my phone from going into flight mode at any time.
P.S. I noticed that this may occur when my phone is out of range from a cellular network signal. I work in shielded rooms to prevent xray radiation from escaping and affecteing people outside the room. At the same time this prevents wireless signal from reaching inside, so I may be without a signal several times on some days. When the signal returns, the phone now does not accept text or calls, until I manually turn the phone on in the com manager.
Any ideas?
Ouch.

There doesn't seem to be a definite solution...
I have a TyTN II that I used stock for 3 months then flashed to Sleuth's for now several months. I almost always have the phone set for 3G Off (EDGE only) to save battery. I use 3G only when needing speed, streaming etc..
In all this time the phone has never gone into flight mode. Perhaps try loading a comm manager that allows you to hold off 3G and try that for a while? Check out "Shaps Advanced Config" to add the 3G button to your comm manager screen. With that you can turn off 3G and perhaps stabilize the phone when it looses signal when you are out of range. I work with medical instrumentation and am in hospitals all the time and go out of range as you say, many times per day without incident.
I also have a Tilt that I got as a spare when there was a promo for $149 and that was cheaper than phone insurance. I will be flashing it soon to Sleuth's rom and testing it before I do the same on a friends Tilt... I'll be watching to see if this is a Tilt thing, but that should be unlikely.
I would flash a new rom to your tilt being that the WM6.1 was just released on this forum I would go with that one. Make sure you HardSPL your tilt first before flashing to a different rom. there are plunty of threads and a whole wiki on how to do all of this properly. If that doesn't work then exchange it for a new one. I have a feeling a new rom and radio will work just fine though
Folkes thanks for the suggesstions. I was forced to suspend any upgrading since my 8925 is out of commission while I am waiting for a replacement on my cracked LCD screen. This happened for the second time in so many months (each time costing $70, and near heart attack trying to replace the screen without damaging phone). Is it bad luck or a 8925 design issue? This time LCD cracked while the phone was in a leather case.
I have been fooling with my old cing 8525, managed to install Hard SPL and flashed a couple of roms. I feel like I need to learn some more by trial and error so that if I manage to brick my phone I can spare my 8925. Is there a rom that is out there that does not have flight mode? Can such a rom be built?
P.S. Having searched many forums on other sites, beyond doubt you have the most eager to help experts. People like me who only dabble occasionally, would never be able to scratch the surface without your help. Please keep up the excellent work.
I use the Tilt all the time - I use a PDair leather case and have never had any problem with "cracked" screen. Nothing even close - but - in an emergency environment where things are smacking up against you - well - the laws of physics apply...
Regarding "going into flight mode". I have never had this happen - I got the original AT&T ROM and then upgraded myself to the latest AT&T ROM and my ONLY wish about this phone would be longer battery life.
It never makes it for more than a day without charging - at the moment I can live with that - but I WISH that I did not have to eye it nervously towards the end of the day.

If contacting you in a timely fashion is a matter of life and death, I would not depend on any windows mobile/palm/smartphone device. There's just too much going on that could go wrong to prevent you (as you've discovered) from getting that one call.
I'd rather stick to a simpler device.

I have used suh a device for three to four years without a problem, starting with 8125, 8525, and now 8925. I agree that wwindows devise may freeze up more often but other setups have other issues and are less practical.
I agree with RemE I think it has to do with battery life, somehow shuts down the radio. I plan to upgrade ROM whenever I get the chance. Are the different ROMs better for different carriers, e.g. att? I had Faria on my hermes which worked fine.
I have done a reasonable amount of searching on this and have not found anything specific to my problem so figured I should post a question.
I have an issue with my Dimaond when it gets hot generally either using Wifi or Phone Data connection that the screen goes out. Basically everything goes to the left side of the phone so if you hit the Task Icon in the top right corner you get the Start Menu. Phone is basically useless at this point and you have to wait for it to cool down. Has happened since day one and is generally worse when using it when charging. I was watching Utube on it the other night 5min video while on AC charge and it went out. I am running Dutty 2.5 Rom and 25.07 radio have tryed 25.08 and 25.05 no difference was happening when the phone had orginal HTC ROM as well. Also will happen on a long call if the screen is on.
Basically feel issue is hardware related and maybe faulty screen still under warrenty so wanted to know peoples opinion on weather I should send back. Problem is will take a couple of weeks and I don't really wnat to wait that long if I can help it. Also assume it would be best to flash standard ROM back, should I do anything with HARDSPL eg should this be changed back as well if I send it back.
And before anyone says it I have tryed searching this topic and have found lots about HOT dimaonds but nothing related to screen going out at the same time :-(
Thanks
I had this issue in my JasJam (Hermes) whre the screen would simply go white after a while of use and I would have to leave it for a while for it to work again.
Unfortunately it sa hardware issue and you should claim a warranty repair on it
I can't see how this could be a software problem so I figured it must be the screen eg hardware related. Would be nice to know if anyone has had the same issue with a dimaond... Seems we may be spending some time apart, just hope it doesn't take long to fix..
I've had the same issue
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=428976
My first device had been replaced recently (i.e. today) by my network provider (o2) and the new device seems to work without any problems now even if it's "hot".
(i.e. default screen adjustment + creating heat by activating the phone, wlan, bt + recharging it)
I sent an email to HTC regarding the fault and they said it would have to go back for a warrenty repair. I brought it through a resellar so has to go back to HK from NZ so will be away three weeks uurggghhh... Just seems odd I don't have any physical damage on the screen but hte problem has been around since day one as I remember having the problem the first day I got it. Juyst seems to be getting worse and is easily reproduced by usiung utube over wifi gets hot and it is all over. Just wondering if I should put an offical ROM from HTC back on the device before I send it back as I currenty am running Dutty ROM, what do you think....
i put the original rom back on and they still found out the the rom had been flashed, and would not repair on warranty
yep, i also asked about this problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=438733
there are some youtube video's of how the phone behaves
my phone seems to do it less frequently since stopping using panosha's rom
im using alpha zero 7 at the moment..
i've also noticed that it isnt necessarily a heat issue, my phone does it completely at random
yesterday i found though, that when the phone did the alignment issue, i gave it a good shake.. and hey.. its all aligned again?!
maybe it was just a fluke, it hasnt freaked out since..
holding thumbs
Hey,
I also have the same screen problem, but my Alignment goes to right.
If I press on the left side, a press on the right side is recognized.
Good to know that Im not the only one with this problem.
greets doena
I got my phone back a week ago replaced the screen has been away for over two months, complete disaster, anyway all sorted now and I have not had the problem since....
I had this exact same issue (out of the box).
It was a hardware fault and I exchanged it for another one.
Haven't had any problems since.

Hardware's fault ? Most likely not. I will give u an example of why I think it was software related. My device ran hot as well but I simply switched roms and now it's the complete opposite. Your most recent device most likely come with a different Rom in the phone.
My tilt recently has been acting rather strange, and I'm not sure if its the radio or not. The phone keeps on gaining and losing signal, and cannot figure out why. At first I thought it might be a software problem, but I updated the rom to the newest official release and that did not fix the problem. Does anyone have a suggestion? The problem isn't reception, I've never had this trouble until recently, has always worked fine in this area regardless of weather / other.
not sure if it's the same issue...
I had the problem few weeks back..
my tytn would be having no signal at times..
I nid to go to Comms Panel and off/on the Phone.
after few days, encountered no SIM Card detected error.
hard reset and changing ROMs, including stock ROM didn't help.
now it's being repaired..
hope to get it back soon.
its horrible that you mention that, my warranty literally ran out about 5 days ago . However, based on the fact that I've done just about everything I could on the software end, I think it might be hardware (even though I haven't really even put this phone through any trauma whatsoever). The radio part of the phone....does anyone know which specific part that is? I don't remember seeing an individual radio in the disassembly, so I assume that it is on one of the boards. Does anyone know which one specifically?
mine was subjected to a few drops on the floor hehe..
but it was ok...
it was only recently that I encountered those issues...
if U can try get hold of the tytn II assembly/dis-assembly pictures, U might be able to remove the antenna pcb/board...
I only cleaned the metal connectors at the antenna board area.. no joy..
I am the happy owner of a newly Galaxy Tab
and am subject to a rather annoying problem!
Once my tab in hands, I undertake a full exploration of the unit
and all tests relating thereto (installation of
various programs, GPS, ...) Everything seems to be perfect!
But ...
I continue my tests and installs a game, known as
compatible with Tab (Angry Birds), the installation
goes without problems.
The problem arises when opening the game, screen
remains as frozen (freeze?) and reboot th Tab after
few seconds ....
It happens the same way on all the games
I have tested!
In wanting to see my pictures taken with the camera,
unable to open the gallery! The screen also freezes the Tab
!
I fear a hardware problem on my tab and can already imagine
having to return to the SAV
Has anyone ever encountered a similar problem with
Tab or its there a suggestion to solve this problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated .
That both sounds very annoying as well as a problem I haven't personally heard before. I'm not sure, but you may have a faulty unit.
I'd try a factory reset. Go to Settings>Privacy>Factory reset and wipe the data. It will NOT touch your sdcard. See if it works. If not its the Tab it self.
that problem my friend, you are 1 of 25 lucky people out there with Hardware Faulty chipset. Some friends works for Best Buy and local cellular shops, are getting similar problems. No one know exactly why the problem happens.
I would just bring it back to shop you purchased and ask for refund NOT exchange. Cause exchange are likely to get one of few similar problem devices.
First of all, thank you for helping me to solve this problem.
At begining of story, when i first have my unit and discover this issue, i've tried to do a factory reset and a data wipe but nothing better ..
Then i attempt some flashings on the unit, i tried different firmware (JJ3, JJ4, JJ7, Roto JME, Roto JMI) but problem remains the same.
Like Chainfire, i think of a faulty unit.
I'm currently under JJ4 and don't know what was the initial firmware on the unit when i bought it, do you know i will have some problems if i bring it back with another firmware to the shop ?
Don't know aout your particular shop, but when i had a problem with my first unit here in the UK, i took it back to tesco on RotoJMEv4
Got another new unit and walked right out of there with no probs
Yeah just tell your problem then leave it there, they don't really check.
I had a similar problem with my I9000, it was rooted with custom ROM but they just took and it and fixed the problem... well in your case they will just replace it most probably...
You right, spandsbab ,
i decided to bring it back to my shop and they gave me just another, working one.
All is working great on this one
Have had my Note for almost 2 yrs now, rooted many times. Had the motherboard replaced and currently on extended warranty.
Problem is I have been experiencing sleep of death (phone randomly turns off). There is no frequency to this SOD. Sometimes it happens everyday sometimes in a few days. I thought maybe its a fault stock ROM so I rooted and flashed a custom but the problem is that the problem still exists.
So my question is do you think that the new hardware is causing the problem? If yes can i get it replaced since I am on extended warranty? Ofcourse after unrooting and going back to stock.
But I fear that they will just send it back incase they dont see it happen

Hello.
I used to share the same SOD problem. even though at that time my device was still brand new with 4.0.4 ICS. When I went to CS to complain, all they did were a factory reset. After just 1 day, the problem came back. My wife who bought the same phone also experienced the same problem. we're at loss that time and I even considered selling it. But one day, my device heats up so much that it spoiled the speaker, and I furiously went back to the CS and really gave them a piece of my mind. They replaced the broken parts and also gave me a new battery. ever since then, no more problems.
In case of my wife's, the SOD persists untill I decided to flash her a custom rom Ultimate JB and combined with speedmod's and the problem disappears.
What I was trying to say is, it's possible from the hardware AND Battery (as in my case) Or also from ROM/Kernel Related problem (As in my wife's case) Hers still have SOD's but after a few battery cycle, it srated to lessen n lessen n it hasn't happened in the last 6 months. (Ours also almost 2 years)
