Tilt Battery Drain During Phone Calls

OK, I know battery life is always an issue with PDA phones. I'm never far from a charger. I'm fine as long as I'm just checking e-mail (4 accounts, once an hour) and a little light web surfing with Opera Mini.
The problem arises when I use my phone as...well...a phone.
My Tilt loses battery power at an alarming rate when I'm talking on the phone. A 20 minute conversation will easily cost me 40% of my battery.
I'm usually in a non-3G area, so I'm on Edge. I normally have a good, strong 4-bar signal. Even when I'm in a 3G area, I use a different comm manager to turn off 3G to conserve power. I use KaiserTweak and select all the "Advised" settings in the power-related sections.
I've tried several different radios, but haven't noticed an improvement.
Does anyone have any ideas or recommendations on improving the efficiency of my Tilt in phone mode?

I have the same problem.
I have 3 batteries. 2 Samsungs and 1 Dynapak. Each battery lasts about 3 hours in standby. The phone is always warm as well. I have a utility that shows the phone is running around 380mAh current. That's seems pretty high.
I think theres something seriously wrong with certain batches of these phones.

these phones r seriously poor for battery life.. i love the htc but they slowly being overttaken by other phones.. shame!

maybe depends on the battery and ROM/radio because my Kaiser lasts 1 gay of VERY heavy usage+calling, and in stand by can lasts 6 days at least.

Seriously though, hasn't this topic been beat to death with a stylus?
Ask youself this, how is your battery and what all is running on the phone?
If the battery is a year old then just accept that it's shelf life is over with. If your phone is always warm that would general mean that one of the radios is running, Wifi , data, gps? If any of those are running all of the time or when you are not using it, then your draining the battery.
I have a friend that beat himself up trying to figure out why his battery would drain so fast, he reflashed the phone 3 times a day etc etc etc. He just could not accept that it was a crappy battery. I got another (used battery) and it worked fine.

Me too used to get about 2 days with a 2700 that is being registered correctly, i now tell everyone to not phone me "well they don't listen just like no one does" so i block all incoming calls with MagiCall, to what point do i have a phone now? To flash & twaek and text

Buy a new battery.
I don't dig long phone calls unless there is something going on. Too many people just want to hang out on the phone and say nothing.

Mine is a new battery Have to say same about people talking about nothing.

This isn't my first foray into these HTC devices. I've been using them for nearly 2 years now, and I know the battery life on these devices isn't what it is on something like my old RAZR. I'm just fine with that; since the Tilt does so much more, I don't expect the charge to last a week like my RAZR did. But this drain while using the phone is driving me nuts.
FYI, I know to keep WiFi and GPS off, and to use KaiserTweak to shut down data connections when they're not being used. If I don't use the phone or surf, the battery will easily last me 2 days, and that's with checking 4 e-mail accounts every hour, and with SBSH PocketWeather getting updates every 2 hours. But talk on the phone, and it's a different story. I talked to my wife for about 30 minutes last night and went from 80% to 20% battery level.
The battery is only about 7-8 months old. Still, I ordered a new 1600ma battery last week, and it should be here in a day or two. I'm hoping that solves the problem.

It's possible that the battery you have now is under warranty. (if you bought the phone new)

Unfortunately, it was a refurb, and the warranty expired a long time ago. The new battery wasn't exactly a budget killer.

Well my battery seems to be working now.
Phone is no longer hot all the time, and my utility says I'm using between 1 and 64 mA. That's much better than the 350+ mA it was sucking before.
I didn't do a damn thing different either. Didn't change any settings for the radios, didn't reflash, etc..
Some people think that the GPS get's stuck in the "on" position and there's no way to turn it off, short of opening and closing GPS Aware programs repeatedly until your current usage drops in the sub 100 mA range.

Always discharge your battery fully as possible at least 1 a week to ensure your battery last longer, lots of charges above the threshold will diminish your batteries life and capacity. The Kaiser is a powerful device and it is obvious to anyone that this requires power to run it, so the battery wont last for days. :-(

These are Lithium batteries, we aren't in the 90's anymore buddy.. My phone lasts for at least 2 days and sometimes 3 (the phone is over a year old too)..

Be that as it may, when you get a new battery you still have to use it for a few weeks before the phone reports battery levels accurately. The phone may still shut down when WM thinks it's almost empty, regardless if it's actually empty or not. Just try it, battery life improves over the first few weeks of usage, and your battery level readings will get more stable (instead of dropping to 50% in 10 minutes and then proceeding to stay there for 6 hours).
BTW my kaiser lasts about 3 days as well, with fairly heavy usage.

As refered to your reply, i didnt mean discharge fully completely i meant the cut off point would stop you anyhow, i meant to bring it to about 10%, i found that using the battery until it reaches 10-12% far by decreases battery drain when it is fully charged again, this is only 1 in a while though not frequently. I understand lithuim-ion doesnt have a memory effect problem, but there is such thing as variable current influencing different cells which can either benefit or make it worst, there is a lot of debate as to whether this improves it or not.

X1 Battery Life (1 year later)

The battery in my X1 lasted literally five hours today. A couple text messages, some wifi browsing, no calls. My phone gets to the 40-50% mark then my phone starts barking that my battery is low. Is there anything I can do to correct this or should I just get a new battery (which is the original BTW).
If I need to get a new battery, are there any authentic OEM batteries on EBay? I don't want to buy from SonyStyle because they are $54 after my discount.

My battery lasts a respectable amount of time. I listen to the radio on the hour bus ride to work, usually place a couple of phone calls, do some email reading, send a couple of SMS. Usually, my phone gets left on during the day for eight or so hours, then it gets similar treatment on the way home. I also usually make quite a few calls during the day, and it has Exchange Activesync running on it most of the time, and is using 3/3.5G connections. By the time I get home, the battery is often reading about 50%. Theres also various automatic downloads - for RSS, weather, social data and so on every couple of hours.
I've also not-charged it in the night, and it's been good for two days of this kind of activity, by which time the battery is usually on a low-battery warning, but still kicking, by the time I get home on the second day. I've found the battery to be something I can rely upon, but it's also massively varied with rom - battery drains crazyfast using the EnergyROM series, whereas the Rusch/Wildchild Manilla colab builds have relatively minimal drain.

is this with stock rom and radio? All these crazy manila roms are pretty hard on battery usage. Im trying to decide if my battery isnt holding as much a charge as it used to or if its the roms I've been using. I dont want to buy a new battery then find out it makes no difference

I use Wildchild's Pure WM6.5 ROM, so there is no manila.

i use energy leo rom and mine lasts 4 days with intensive use

My battery life IMPROVED!
Yes, you heard right! Thanks to newer Roms and radios the current consumption got lower, so the battery life got better.
Only on hard use (playing, surfing, etc) i get battery problems. But normal use allows me to use the phone 2-3 days. When my xperia was new i only could use it one day, because even in standby it consumpet to much energy (about 20% in 8 hours).

That's fairly cheap. But keep in mind that the battery only has 1000mAh with 3.7V output, unlike the original 1450mAh with 3.6V output.
In any case, you can buy a new batter after another year for this cheap price heh

You WHAT?? I charge my battery every day. I don't mind, because this is not inconvenient (charger @work and @home) and I too consider myself a heavy user. But FOUR DAYS?
I have noticed an issue, which I experience with both my original battery and a brand new clone BST-41 (still 1500mAh). This is that the battery will normally merrily dwindle down to about 20-30%, at which point the X1 will die. I then plug it back in, and once it's booted I find the battery reads critical, but of course it's charging. Once it's charged back up to round about 75%, it'll skip to full, and cease charging.
The net result is that only 70% or so of my battery is usable, which is very irksome. This is the case across every ROM I've tried lately (I don't remember it on stock, but I ditched that over a year ago).
Has anybody else experienced this? Again, this is with 2 separate batteries, so I must presume it is a phone hardware bug/fault/"feature".

Here's a challenge for all your Xperia's. To you who still has 3 - 4 days life span, could you try playing mp3's? strictly via earphones. say in1 hour and 30 minutes. See if the battery last for a day.
When I do that while going to work, My battery after 1 hour or so drops to 30%. I even thought why put this feature in the first place, what was SE thinking? Other SE music phones lasts until you decided to stop playing. I know. Iknow. It's not a music but what the heck... 30%?

I left my X1 playing MP3s on earphones. From 100%, after 4 hours it read 73%.
@G. Leche: maybe you had left the screen or WiFi on. The screen, WiFi (and/or push internet), and GPS are the main battery gobblers. And how's your signal? Frequent G/E/3G switching (or simply having to search for the signal at all) will increase the radio's battery consumption 3-4 times

nope. not at all. in fact "nireklamo ko pa 'to sa SE SM Carpark" told them my phone's a bit warm. Brought 'em there 100% went around shopping and played eheads on my ear. Went back to Se after an hour so they can have a look. and they all said "normal". I guess your lucky, I bet yours is black.
and oh, naka sun cellular ako. maybe it's part of the battery drain.

hmmm... sounds like something is using up your batt. maybe an app? i was driving around a while ago and had nitrogen on the external speaker. that's the only time it gets warm when playing MP3s (due to the screen has to be on if you want to use the speakers)

I worked at AccuShop for some time - they are generally nice folks.

P.S. 1 year old, and no real changes. IMHO, the problem is that the box needs a good charge from a wallwart from time to time - always tricklecharging via USB makes the logic go bonkers!

Just got standard apps, and standard rom (SEUS). except for ms voice commander. I play mp3's through media panel btw.
I haven't even left mine to over charge, since I bought it. I always have habit though of buying a spare battery whenever I bought a new one, same goes for my laptops. But last time SE doesn't have spare batteries for X1 and since taking off of the cover can risk my phone to crack (just an educated speculation though) I don't see myself changing battery from time to time with my Xperia.

Sounds like a battery problem to me. Personally I would buy an OEM battery. Check online retailers for better prices. Using cheap batteries is a lottery.

Does the HD7 have better battery life than the HD2 & Desire HD

Have heard various less than positive reports on the battery life of the two devices in the thread title & just wanted to hear from user experience, especially people swapping from the HD2 to the HD7, if it had better battery life?

I moved over from a HD2. I'd say the battery life is roughly the same if not slightly better on the HD7.

I would agree

I can't comment on the HD2 but one thing I would say is to not be put off by the initial HD7 battery performance. Mine has improved dramatically over the last few days.

i will say i was a lil worried at first as it was great for first 2 charges then it dropped really bad ie lost half the battery over night with no use, BUT, now it has sorted itself out the battery lasts really well. I get way more use than i did on my desire i mean way more like i would say 50% more. With all top end phones battery isnt going to be there strong point but i think wp7 is really good on this point esp as you don't have stupid apps running in the background draining it like on android.

Well that's what used to bug me about the Android devices that I have had, that the battery performance was less than great. This was especially noticeable on the X10 I had for a little while.

It depends on how you use it, my usage the battery doesn't survive the same sort of punishment my Desire does, my usage is mainly as a internet device on 3g, and compared to the Desire it really does drain the battery, as a mp3 player it'll probably piss all over the desire for battery usage, I'd take stock of how you use your phone and plan accordingly.

Like you I am a fairly heavy web user on any device I have so if this particular activity effects the battery life on the HD7 a lot then that's not so good!

Way better than the HD2, and unlike the HD2 it seems to be even drain the whole time, unlike the HD2 which seems to get to 10% left and within a few mins be at 0. I made a good 10-20 mins of phone calls on my HD7 when it said battery is critcally low and it didnt turn off even after the calls.

I had just gotten my HD7 2 days ago, but my battery sucks big time... Its almost like it is leaking badly that during a meeting, I was just messing with the marketplace and the windows live messenger, my battery dropped from about 50% to almost 0 (for the first charge). After second and third charge with lower average use, it still able to last me for a day (8.30am to 8.00pm). Lets hope its like what you guys said, need to stabilize the battery after a few charges. By the way, my HD2 is able to withstand almost 2-3 days in WM6.5, and about a day use for Android Desire HD OS (about 35% upon reaching 11pm from 8.30am).

My battery life sucks big time. If it is in standby it loses 5% battery per 2 hours for no reason, i already disabled the updates from microsoft and my email and calander syncs every hour. And when i'm on internet or marketplace my battery drops 50% in 1 hour. I have charged it know 4-5 times, I hope it will be better. I only charge the battery when it's on critical level.

Poor Battery Life
The battery drained very fast, less than a day with heavy used.
Another bad thing is, took more than 3 hours to fully charged.
No indicator to show the %, very difficult to monitor the usage.

You mentioned "5%" "50%" . . . .
How you get the % to show? or You just estimate.

I think Roaming has a big effect on Battery Life.
My battery has been fine, Awesome Battery life... Until I went to uni, I can get no T-Mobile signal in lecture halls so it roams to Orange, this seemed to kill my battery a lot halfway through the day the battery indicator was less than half full.

I switched roaming off. But I found something interesting, once again marketplace wouldn't open. (it always happens when I'm scrolling en clicking things very fast in the marketplace). So I had to restart my hd7. The battery was 10%, after the restart it was filled for 40% very strange.

How do you know you are connected to the internet?
Is there a way to see and stop the connection since that also takes lotof battery and ofcourse if you are on a limited plan that would call for a huge dent on the bills

So far, after 2 days, battery life has improved greatly since the first day. Much better than most smartphones I have used, and certainly way better than my current Evo even after using it for months. I suspect battery life will only get better as I break it in.
And yes, weak signals can cause significant battery drain regardless of what device you are using. The weaker the signal, the harder the phone tries to find or keep that signal.

Has anyone tested to see how badly the battery life is impacted by changing the brightness setting to high?
I was checking this phone out, and found that changing that setting really made a significant difference in the quality of the user experience... it didn't seem washed-out, like it does on the default setting. I'm just wondering how much of a beating the battery will take though.
Right now, I'm really leaning towards the Dell Venue... primarily because of the quality of the screen and the better battery. I don't care about the physical keyboard, so an HD7 might meet my needs if I can run it at full brightness.

nexus one battery life - this is it for my nexus

ive had a nexus one since the day it came put and since upgrading to froyo and now 2.2.1 my battery lifes been horrible. my normal settings are no wifi or bluetooth on. no sync. im running uv kernels and my battery life is still horrible. i recently sent my nexus to htc thinking it was a hardware problem. the new nexus dies just as fast. ive almost literally looked at every battery life thread and tried tips and still doesnt help. my phone doesnt last 8 hours let alone 24 hours. ive checked my battery use and the only thing over 10 percent is my display which im using auto brightness. any help would be so greatful because ive tried everything i know how to do

that's definitely a dead battery, I've got my Nexus One since 2nd March and keep using it till now, still there is 92% of usable capacity.

Check the battery cal thread. We just finally hacked the nexus battery EEPROM chip and can tweak voltage etc. The changes got merged this week. So maybe some hope still...

well these things can definitely kill the battery extremely quickly if you use them a lot.
i personally don't have a problem with the battery life on mine on a normal work day because i only use it probably on average 5-10 min an hour for a 9 hour work day and by then i'm usually at 50-65% battery depending on how much i used my phone.
if you suspect that the phone is the problem and not the battery then try downloading currentwidget its a small widget that will tell you exactly how much power your phone is using in miliamps. it takes about 1 min for it to refresh so it does not work in real time but this is kind of nice because it allows you to see how much power its taking (or receiving if its on the charger) when its in idle
mine usually reads 3-5 mA when i unlock it so that is what its taking when its in sleep mode.
the most i've ever seen it take when draining the battery is about 465mA i would say that the average drain when i'm using it for browsing websites and using simple apps with the screen at half brightness is about 350-400ma or so
one thing is for sure though if you use an N1 heavily it can and will kill the battery in a matter of hours, if i play angry birds for example with my screen on half brightness after a few hours i'm at about 20-30% battery easily and the phone itself is very warm from the constant CPU use.

and btw the bad battery life is the combination of the AMOLED that takes massive power compared to an LCD and the 1st gen Snapdragon CPU clocked at 1ghz, battery life without the screen on and with minimal CPU use like streaming music for example or playing music with BT headphones i can go all day easily. it only drains like 5% an hour maybe a tad more but the difference is that the CPU is not working very hard and the screen is off completely.

AMOLEDs have been made for low power consumption, especially for black colors...no way it uses more battery than my SLCD variant...

they can take less power with the proper screens yes, they are dynamic in their power consumption like plasma's are in that how much power they use is directly related to what they are displaying and what the brightness (or contrast in the case of plasma's) is set at.
LCD's are predictable and constant with their power drain.
AMOLED's are capable of consuming more power than LCD's of the same size if given the right display material (mostly white, mostly brightly lit content)
considering that most of the websites and even some apps i use on my nexus have white backgrounds it explains why my screen pulls so much power when i'm using it

There was a test done somewhere that showed that all the phones with AMOLED variants did the worst in battery life. Best battery? Droid x

true, white on white, amoled does use more battery...but meh...argh it killed my point xD
haha yeah you're right I guess Websites should have black background and green text, just like my terminal, gmail, etc. meh ^^

that sounds jsut like my phone. 5 to 10 minutes of use an hour and im at 60 percent. that cant be normal! angry birds for 10 minutes is like 8 percent battery loss. like i said i got a new battery for my old nexus one then noticed that the "issue" still existed so i got a new nexus one and my phone still dies rapidly. why is it that some nexus ones are better. i hear people say they get excellent battery life and to me on a brand new nexus one with a uv kernel my battery life is still horrible?

It's normal there is nothing wrong with your nexus one they suck battery if you use them heavily

Playing Candy Crush for 22 hours straight can take its toll on your battery (and your marriage). Rate this thread to express how the LG V20's battery performs under heavy use. A higher rating indicates that it lasts a long time even when playing games, streaming video and audio, and doing other CPU-intensive activities.

3 hours and 8-12 minutes of 1440p video at full brightness, loud speaker, wifi on, and screen recorder running (although the file messed up so i cant post it).

I can honestly say that it really depends on what I am doing. For example if I am digging around on the WOW companion Application or Yahoo's Fantasy Sports Application, the whole phone will get heated up and the battery starts taking a nosedive. If I'm not doing anything with my phone it can go 15 hours straight without losing a single percent. If I am just watching YouTube or something along those lines at 1080 or lower it seems to still go down, but not nearly as quickly as the (possibly poorly - from a power consumption view - designed) apps mentioned before.

As far as I'm concerned the removable battery negates any battery performance complaints. Out of power? Pop in a new battery, and you're 100% in a few minutes, back to endure more "heavy use"... How can any other modern flagship begin to compare?! (not to mention a year down the line, when I can just buy a fresh battery to mitigate deteriorating capacity, while the crowd has to buy a brand new iphone/s9/m10)

I've been playing Sky Force Reloaded a lot the past week. I had to be next to the power charger. I haven't bought a spare/secondary battery yet. I carry around a usb battery and a short cable when I need too...

Installed some more apps and games, and talk about nosedive. From the time I leave the house at 7AM to about 12 noon, the battery drops down to 15%(battery warning). I have to charge it then. I have to charge it again when I leave the office, which is around 5PM. Battery level varies at that time. Then charge again before bed. I still haven't rooted my phone. Phone temperature remains about 80F to about 108F(heavy use while charging) at times. LinkedIn, xfinity, Groupon, Weather, Waze, etc. Battery drainers! I've about almost had it. I miss root, and miss the ability to freeze apps. I will have to root this LG V20 sooner or later...

Yes my does that too.. Battery lasts just a bit over half day. I purchased 2nd battery but it's getting very annoying to change and charge them when ur between places.

I usually can keep my phone charges, in the car, desk, night stand. Today we where doing Hurricane prep listening to Spotify while working, watching YouTube while in the car driving from place to place. Had to set the screen to auto brightness to deal with the BRIGHT sunlight outdoors. After about 3.5 to 4 hours of use and 1 hour and 30 minuts of screen on time I was down to about 38% battery. I had to drive home and grab my power bank. I've only had my V20 for 2 months.
Not impressed!

Just got my new Note 8 and yesterday I had 7 hours and 44 minutes of on time and 3 hours and 10 minutes of screen on time and was at 50% battery. That far better than my 2 to 3 month old V20.

Can I ask if you are ok with where the fingerprint sensor is located seriously thinking about getting note 8 as well v20 screen on time is getting worse and worse everyday

It is a bit of a nuisance especially at first. I've learned to adjust my grip so I grab the phone a little higher up than I used to and this makes the fingerprint scanner easier to reach. Since the Note 8 as narrower than traditional phones due to the new display format going it higher is easier while still being able to hold the device securely.
Still not ideal but manageable and definitely not something that would keep me from buying the Note 8.
I'm also using the facial recognition feature in conjunction with the fingerprint scanner. It's not something I thought I'd be into, but it works really well even in conditions I assumed it would not, like low light and slightly of angle.. So if I don't feel like doing for the fingerprint scanner I can just got the power button while holding the Note 8 and it will unlock.
Note I do have slightly bigger hands than most.

I disagree. If I have to change the battery every four hours of heavy (not even that heavy), somethings terribly wrong. If it was just one battery swap, maybe I could agree but I'd need at least 3 or 4. Luckily I'm usually able to keep my batter topped off most regular days. Removable batteries is no excuse to have horrid battery life.

Neat thing about a removable battery: it lets you swap out for a bigger unit.
I have a 6700 mAh battery in my H918, and haven't plugged in before bedtime in months. I can stream hours of video with full brightness and no thought for power. And that's the small option, the ZeroLemon unit is 10000 mAh, I just don't need that much.
In the end, the phone is only as smart as the user. I guess we can lead a horse to water.... but we can't keep removable batteries on the market if the people are too limited to use them :crying:

6700mAh battery, no thanks. I'm content with a normal size battery that can get me normal size battery life like other devices. Then a spare on those rear occasions I need it. The V20 should be commended for having a removable batter (probably the last higher end smart phone to offer one), but not it's battery performance.
I'm smart enough to want normal battery life out of a normal size battery, removable or not. :crying:

I voted "bad" because real world battery life is actually inferior to the 2012 Samsung Galaxy Note II it replaces. Naturally in lab tests the V20 massively outlasts the 2012 vintage Note II but I don't live in a lab. It's the only aspect of the phone that isn't a considerable improvement. I knew that if I listen to streams using the high quality audio with decent earphones the V20 isn't going to last like a modern Samsung or iPhone, or even Xiaomi, but I am a little surprised how it's not better. The replaceable battery is a necessity, not a luxury. Anyway it is mitigated by Quick Charge and the fact that the device seems to me to be just about beyond criticism in every other meaningful way.

Yes the battery life sucks stock but they do make a 4200mah now that fits in stock place no issues. I bought it and I get 6hours 44 minutes screen on. Much much better then the stock 3200 with no added size as it fits in stock compartment and cover.
Recommend to any V20 user.
