[REQ] Write up or wiki for theming. - Captivate Themes and Apps

Since I am no help to the dev community at this time(still learning). I thought I would give creating themes a try. It would be great if someone who knows more than us noobs, would make a thread or a wiki listing what files or locations go to what parts of the ui that are able to be modified. I have read the thread on the notification drawer and am currently working on that but what about the stock widgets and other aspects of the ui. I know there are threads that explain how to do this but if it was in one location and maybe stickied maybe we could get more themes rolling for these bada$$ phones. I know it would be easier for me for what that is worth.

a suggestion re postings

hi to all
im completely new to the whole pda game, and have recently purchased my vario.
i have spent the last few weeks plodding around the forum, gaining hints and tips - just feeling myself around to understand the capabilities of my ppc.
its great to see so many dedicated people sharing information and helping one another - a real credit, and to the site as a whole, a complete wealth of valuable information. thanks to all involved!!
after my experience here so far, i have a small suggestion that may help everyone, especially other beginners find vital posts, or should i say specific posts within threads.
its very easy for threads to become huge due to thanks yous and suggestions, etc. (they can also stray way off path). obviously these are fantastic and move threads forward, but i was thinking that it would be really great, and save loads of time, if posts where an author, say, releases a tweak/hack or unlocker, has one main thread which they use to release. this thread is locked to replies, but a link is added to another reply thread, where other members can add their comments and suggestions, etc. the author could reply to individuals on this sub-thread, but post important comments and updated releases on the main thread.
thus anyone wanting to either view the history of an item, or just simply download the newest version of a hack could do so without the hassle of searching through say 30 pages.
this would also allow those who want to read the 'other member' comments do so.
obviously the sub thread would link up to the main thread...
i dont want to step on toes, but hopefully other members would agree and some new posts could start this way to see how it goes.
comments, remarks wellcome...
regards
dan
Well I think your idea is a good one in many ways but as updates come about comments and tips also come about and if they are all in order with the updates it does help with it as sometimes the author/developer of the a hack or tweak doesn't always get the instructions perfect and the experience of the other members as they try it and find a better way of using it or installing it helps and if you have them all in the same place and without the need of searching through another forum to find the right part of the page that corresponds with the current version. I think it would almost need to be put into portions. Example for the original hack has a forum then the next version has a forum and then it would keep it in order. What do you think??
as an alternative, a listing of the post # and date announcing the new release by the version number and content listing on the original post of a thread, or the "locked" thread suggested in this thread.
funkydan: I think it would make a lot of sense. I'll try to remember, but it can be hard to enforce. Good policy though.
V vbmenu_register("postmenu_952517", true);
One thought is if when you select New Thread you are given two options one for general threads and the other if you are wanting to post a piece of software etc and if they are wanting to post a normal thread they get taken to the normal thread creator but if they want to post a piece of software etc they are taken to a template where the enter in the info and then automatically another thread is created within that thread for other users to post. What do you think?

Throttlelock skins

hope some one enjoys these.
another screenshot
here's the cd theme.
None of these have lines.
Digging the CD theme, going to try it out. Thanks.
You're welcome.
It's nice to fially have a chance to contribute to this fantastic site
Just a follow up. Was using the CD theme all day today and it looks real well. Everybody at work knows me as "blankman" because I am always buying blank cds so when they saw this on my phone, everybody got a nice little laugh out of it. Thanks again.
why don't you just post your skins in the throttle lock thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=419525
or maybe go to the real ThrottleLock website and post it there? http://www.throttlelauncher.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=19
we already have enough new threads started for skins for this program instead of people just including their skins in the threads that already exist.
sorry if i am coming off as a jerk but like i said there are too many threads for this and this is hardly the section to post this in because a skin doesnt have anything to do with software development.
toorima
Sorry
Sorry for the honest mistake.
Just wanted to contribute to this forum.
I will go elsewhere from now on.
@rojaa
There is nothing wrong with opening a thread in this section if you are making some sort of contribution. Making the software look more appealing is also part of the development process in any software. Why else do you think that we are not cracking down on {skin} threads?
The only thing that you cannot post in this section are new threads with questions that can be answered either in the corresponding forum/thread of the software/hardware related to the question.
Don't worry, you didn't do anything wrong...
BTW, cool skin
@toorima_anchuu

As far as the Flaming, please read the following extract from the same thread:
""Flaming" another user for a mistake, such as posting in the wrong section, or asking a noob type question, will no longer be tolerated. ANY MEMBER (OF ANY STATUS) CAUGHT FLAMING ANOTHER MEMBER FOR ANY REASON, WILL BE SUBJECT TO DISCIPLINARY ACTION. This just will not be tolerated guys and gals. XDA isn't here for only tech savy members, but for members of all types, Noobs included."

Should we rename this forum?

Hey All,
Need a little help with something. One of the News Writers pointed out that all (or most) of the themes in this forum are for HVGA resolution Android devices, is this true? If yes, perhaps we should rename this forum to inform people of this, so that those with WVGA screen'ed devices don't try to install these themes?
Thanks in advance for your helpf

i agree and support the name change
I like the idea of utilizing the "Themes" section of each devices sub-forum more and keeping this for generic themes able to be used on all devices (Like themes to third-party launchers). I would however, link devices themes sections into one (Have the Magic section redirect to the Dream section).
Android Themes (the way we do them) are always rom-dependand (except some application metamorphs) cause of android framework changes, so they rarely work on different devices.
This forum is wrong pointing to a "generic android", the same way other devices forums mix "themes and apps" cause they are completely different things...
This forum can still be called "Android Themes" just setup sub-forums that are hyperlinks to each phones Themes forum. They already exist and it would require minimal work. This would allow people to browse this section for general stuff, for app themes, etc. and then allow people to also click the sub-forum link and go directly to their phones Theme section, which would easily keep phone specific roms and themes self-contained, removing any possible confusion.
I think something about this forum should be changed. It is very disorganized.

What he said lol.
I personally liked it the way it used to be. I just had my Dream/G1 section bookmarked and there was a theme section underneath it that had all of the Dream themes. I really have no idea why they changed it to be on the main forum page. The themes are normally Rom specific (which are device specific) so each device having its own theme section only makes sense. I think this whole section should be deleted. I guess you could just hyperlink those sections depending on what phone you have but that's just extra work that's not really needed.

[REF] Guide to Compiling (covers CM7)

Not sure if this goes here but I thought that this was the most applicable section. If not then I apologize in advance and feel free to move it to the correct section mods.
Gridlock32404 on the XDA forums has put together a great guide to compiling for Android. I briefly skimmed over the post and it does much more then teach compiling. I personally think its a great starting read for anyone interested in getting started on doing more with their device besides just flashing.
Check it out with the link below. If almyz125 wants to add it to the Vibrant Directory that would great.

Personally, I feel that development guides belong in development as long as they're informative. In this case I think it's a good submissions. Thanks for the post
(although I really wish the mods would have thought more about my idea to change forums names to Roms, Mods, Themes, Guides, Think Tank, Q&A, Off Topic, etc.)

I agree with the forum naming suggestion. Should be mandatory to read that post before anyone asks how to make or take apart roms. Very informative and easy to read imo.
Finally, a not useless post...

Wanna Make A Thread? See here, to learn how. (Prevent noob'ing)

Hi, fellow S4 Active users
Before starting a new thread, please read this OP.
Now as you may have noticed there are several questions flooding this sub-forum,
that have been asked a million times,
So let us all be a responsible "NEW USER" and not a "NOOB USER"
I know some of us are new and are not oriented properly on how you can maximize your time by using the almighty search button.
SEARCH BUTTON!!???
Yes, that is correct, the search button...
.
.
No, it is not sorcery or magic,
It is a tool to help everyone out, that is the reason why XDA has spent money making a search engine for us to be more convenient in finding what we seek.
So let us not neglect what XDA has made and let's utilize this search engine,
it is not a benefit, it is a privilege,
For those who don't know how to use it, let me help you.[IMAGE PENDING]
It is that highlighted spot, yeah, right there. Hey look, yup you found it in your own browser.
So, tell me the benefits of this so called 'search button' ? I mean, I can just create a new thread and wait for someone to answer it!
Well,
You can find the answer to your questions faster, since not all senior members, RC's are available all the time and some won't even answer you because it has already been asked again.
You'll help other newbies by orienting them about the search button.
We'll have a clean and uniform forum, a perfect community which all of us can enjoy.
Mods will have less headaches deleting posts and threads that are considered useless.
No one will call you noob. (YAY!)
It will reduce arguments and flaming within the thread.
SO LETS KEEP THIS FORUM PROFESSIONAL,
UTILIZE THE SEARCH BUTTON
Forum basics:
The S4 Active General Section:

HOW TO MAKE A GOOD QUESTION...
Stupid as it may seem,
There is a good and bad question.
So, here are some tips.
NEVER EVER PANIC!
i know some of us are new and have no experience with android, and suddenly we did something wrong and ended up bricking our phone.
But please don't post:
"Please help my phone is brick, Im desperate!!!!, help me please, i dont know what to do!!!" (Dont ever do this!)
Do so, but do it in a proper manner:
Make sure you write every detail (about what you did before doing something wrong) and your phone bricked.
"Please help me, I tried to flash XYZ rom and when i tried to install it using recovery mode by Vol Up+Home+Power i get a successful install message, however when i turned on my phone it got stuck on bootloop, can u help me with this?, i tried download mode Vol Down+Home+Power and tried odin too but it does not work"
LIST OF ALREADY ASKED POINTLESS QUESTIONS
What is the best ROM?
What is the best kernel?
What is the best launcher?
What is the best apps for xxx?
Basically these are all dependent on the nature of the user, there is no best ROM, kernel, launcher, app since we all have our own preferences so its endlessly pointless to even make or ask threads.
How to get paid apps?
Paid Apps for Free are known as warez and you can't get it on XDA.
When will ROM/KERNEL XYZ be released?
Any rom/kernel release question should go to the development thread, also its rude to ask for ETA's (estimated time of arrival)
I saw that CM ** is released on XYZ is please make it work
NO, please look at the development thread to get into the real condition of CM ports, if its not here, its not real
X Rom vs. Y Rom
Same reason as asking what is the best ROM, its really up to the user preference
I RECOMMEND ALL NEW USERS TO WATCH THIS
(NOBODY'S A NOOB OK?) ITS JUST FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES
