At random my lcd brightness will go up and down like it's having a seizure. I have tried auto brightness on and off, and with the power saving feature on and off. It's not a bid deal because it usually goes away quickly, but I would like to know if anyone else has it.
here's a video of the problem-
Mine will at times just randomly change itself for no reason and i will have to go back into the menu and adjust it again.
It only happens every once in a while but it is still annoying.
Similar but not the same. Anyone can help us?

You sure that it is not simply the dropdown menu bar at the top? It changes your brightness by keeping your finger on it.

It starts when I'm not even touching the screen. It goes up and down, up and down, et. It's becoming more frequent now. I guess my lcd is dying or something.
same with me. I like to keep my brightness setting to the absolute minimum, however on numerious occassions i find that it has automatically brightned and when i go into the settings the slider is halfway.
I usually notice it after charging the phone, either way it shouldnt happen.
I had the same issue when i have installed the Voodoo lagfix + Voodoo Color.
Without Voodoo color, it was better.
Just want to check that you guys know that
you can adjust brightness using the drop-down status bar, right?
By swiping you finger left/right on the drop-down status bar, you could adjust brightness. (if "automatic brightness adjustment" is off)

I'm positive my lcd is dying. It started with JM1, continued in JPM and JP6. It flickers and goes up/down without any pattern.

What do you mean by flickering? Perhaps the brightness changes in such rapid succession? Try using light sensor test
Dial this number (as if calling someone) *#0589#
Try to block the light sensor with this app running and see if it's just a calibration thing, etc. though I don't know if it is calibrable (or whatever the word is )
PS: AM/OLED (or SAMOLED for that matter) is not a LCD

I've attached a zipped video in the first post.
EDIT: I tried this app when it was doing it, the app didn't respond at all to the changes, it kept reporting "Level 0". Which means it has nothing to do with it and I'm 100% certain this stupid thing is dying. And since I bought an unbranded/unlocked version from ebay, I don't think I can use the warranty. And even if I could, I've heard plenty of horror stories with warranties and support. I would just sell it for parts on ebay.

Hi,
Received my brilliant brilliant kaiser today. Every penny worth an upgrade from trinity apart from a slight brick feeling.
I was wondering if someone knows how to keep QWERTY keyboard lights on all the time while you are using the keyboard. At the moment they stay on for few seconds when keyboard is opened, but turns off later and don't turn on even on pressing keys unless you close and open the keyboard. It would be helpful to type in dark if backlight on keyboard keys stay on as long as keyboard is open.
thanks
heh i use the low tech way, i put my finger over the light sensor
I am wondering the same thing. There is an option for "Automatic keyboard auto sensor" for the backlight under "Settings....Buttons....Backlight" but haven't been able to get it to work. Where is the light sensor? I could possibly go high tech and put tape over it!
Update:
In the Registry, navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER...Control Panel....Backlight....QKeyLedTimeout
and change the default value from 10(seconds) to something high eg. 180 (3 minutes).
This will keep the backlight on for the specified amount of time.

so say you only need the keyboard for 1 min, when you slide it shut does it stay lit for the other 2 min or go off when closed?
One last update....the above registry mod actually will keep the phone button backlights on for the specified time as well as the keyboard backlight. So, this could be a bonus for some. Still haven't found the light sensor on this device I am guessing it is on the keyboard on the left side (tiny hole), but I still haven't been able to activate it. Anybody else had any luck?

Unticking this option actually fixes the issue... If you DON'T enable the auto-sensor, the light will come back on instantly on every new key press (any key..).
Stretching up the time-out with earlier suggested reg-mod is a nice added bonus...
The sensor is slightly left from the Q-key. A little black dot.
Strange,
I put my finger on top of it, and it did not light the keyboard

Yeah.. my light sensor is iffy... Maybe it is just a bug.. I can be in a totally dark room and they key backlight will not turn on. If i disable the auto sensor the backlight, of course, works as normal.
i think i will have to leave it disabled..

That is exactly the same problem as I am having. I can't seem to get the keyboard to light up in complete darkness. My other devices never had this problem. The backlight would come on in darkness. Any suggestions?

Most of the time it works for me.. The easiest fix it to simply disable the light sensor. It works just like any other PPC then. If it is misbehaving a reboot will fix it for a while. I haven't actually had any problems for a bit now. I wonder if it has anything to do with the lock password bug? I did disable my lock password and haven't had any problems since.. might just be a coincidence. Wouldn't hurt to try that too just to see.
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone new how to lower the brightness level to below that of stock, up to the level of night mode if I needed.
I like to do a bit of browsing before I sleep, and the brightness levels even on the lowest hurt my eyes! If anyone knows how to do this I would very much appreciate it. Thanks!

Ive been looking at the Auto-Brightness thread and it seems Cyan already knows how to tweek the brightness values, but I dont even know what a github is let alone the deving needed to acheive this.
cyanogen said:
Anyway, the Desire has 10 auto-brightness levels, and the N1 has only 5. These are just an array of lux/brightness values. I put them into my vendor overlay and rebuilt, and I have to say it's much nicer. I'm going to include it in the next CM.

Cyan if you can help, I would appreciate it!! But understand if the modding is far more important
Like how the brightness dims before the screen auto turns off, or how it is dim when you tap the sleep button in the clock application - these would be good. As for that stock widget that controls the wifi, blutooth, gps, sync and brightness, i never touch it because it messes with autobrightness, but if it could be changed to temporarily go really dim thatd be perfect

Either my friend! The clock application goes even dimmer than I want, so somewhere in between would be great. But I'm sure that could be customized, I just dont know where to start looking..
I'd be really interested in this too - I like reading in bed before going to sleep, but the wife doesn't like the light being on. I have to angle my nexus slightly away as it is too bright, even at the lowest setting, to have it directly facing me while in a dark room.
I have been noticing that my auto brightness doesn't work like it did when I first got my phone a few months ago.
Back then it seemed like it changed brightness after a few seconds when it should.
Nowadays it doesn't seem to do that anymore.
Now if I hold my phone close to a bright light, hit the power button and unlock the phone, the screen is very bright, as it should. When I hold my phone in a dark place, it doesn't adjust the brightness. It keeps being very bright.
BUT, if I hold my phone in a dark place and hit the power button and unlock the phone, it's dark, but when I move my phone to a brighter location it does make the screen brighter.
I first thought this had to do with CM, but now on stock froyo it does the same thing.
Is this normal, and am I just mistaken? And should the phone adjust the brightness when I hold my thumb on the sensor thats just right under the power button on the front of the phone (I expect the screen to be less bright)? Because it doesn't do that.
Thanks in advance.
No it's not normal, mine reacts to changes in ambient light in a second or 2 (FRF50), just like yours used to.
When I cover the light sensor with my thumb, the screen dims right down.
Thanks for your reply.
Is there anything I can do to check why this doesn't happen on my phone?
Can I perform a check on the status of my sensor, on it's behavior?
And are there any known reasons why this could happen?
Thanks in advance.
This exact issue is happening with me ever since I updated to 2.2. It worked perfectly before but now I notice that once the screen adjusts to maximum brightness in a well lit area, it never dims....don't know what the problem is. But I hope there is a solution.
Good to hear I'm not the only one with problem, that gives me hope this might be a software issue rather than a non-working sensor.

Actually I may have to take this back, in retrospect, the dimming actually could have been the screen timing out.
When covering the sensor with my thumb and not having the screen set to 15secs, it doesn't dim until I lock/unlock the screen.
Reading on another forum this is by design rather than a flaw, as people complained the screen would fade in and out in certain light conditions... now it can't.
Ah, okay. Good to hear.
Thanks again, Rusty.
froyo seems to fix the autobrightness for me, at least now i can see the screen brightness is changing according to lighting condition, previously i don't notice it (using cyan ROM prior to froyo).
I've noticed that while viewing something my phone sometimes changes the brightness, not drastically, but noticeable still, especially if the background is white. My auto brightness is off and I'm running stock and not rooted. I was wondering if it was something with my phone or is it normal?
Is your sleep timer set to Auto Sleep? It dims the phone automatically if you're not moving it enough. Try changing it to a set timer and see if it still does it.

Just tried it at your suggestion. I tried it for 45 seconds then a minute it still happens. The best way I can describe it is if you use blinkfeed or any rss reader that has a light theme or even a web site like this. If you see a picture, then scroll away from it like you're reading the rest of the article, it'll dim a little bit.
As mentioned above I believe this may be the HTC Ones auto screen tone adjusting similar to how you put your home HDTV color temps on Dynamic, Standard, Movie, Sports etc. The HTC One like the Samsung S3 both utilize a battery saving technology used to automatically adjust the tone of webpages and other pure white screens by conserving battery power. I would try viewing the same screen with the power save features on and off to see if there's any noticeable difference. I don't believe there is a specific setting for this technology on the settings panel in the One like there is on the S3.

Hmm, I can't get this to reproduce. The only thing I can think of is the stock web browser has a setting to dim webpages that are still loading, but I don't think that helps you any. Sorry .

I've also tried just tried what you suggested, it still happens, which is strange.
DiZzyBonne
I tried that too, tested it with Naked Browser and Opera Mini.
Still, thank you both for trying to help, I appricate it. I'm still within the couple of days to return, so I'm just going to go and see if I can get a swap for another HTC One.

No, not originally. I did turn it on, tested, then off again to see if that did anything but to no effect. Still, this won't push my away from the phone. It's a beautiful piece, I just hope the swap will fix that.
I just got my Asus tf701t and, while first using it, the home and back buttons did not work in portrait mode and the screen would change brightness at varying time intervals (usually a few seconds) when the brightness was set very low. an update to 4.3 cured the back and home button issue but the screen still can't stay at one brightness level when I set it to very dim. It's not changing dramatically, more like a few percent, but enough to be distracting.
The odd part is that the dimming/brightening issue almost seems application dependent. It occurs far more often in the home screen or skout but almost never when playing shadowgun dead zone or when using naked browser.
Does anyone else have similar issues?
The only posts about flickering on other people's tf701t seem to be related to power saving and I need to know if this needs to be exchanged or if this is a common problem.

I don't have the flickering when not on auto and lowest setting.
However some apps can dimm the screen while loading.
On the TF700 the stock browser did that when loading a page but on the TF701 the brightness doesn't do that.
You have an ambient light sensor built into the device. It adjusts the brightness based on the lighting in your environment. It can't be turned off either.

It can't be turned off? So when you turn on automatic brightness it just changes the brightness more drastically? This doesn't sound right.
Based on the other poster's response, I think I need to return this unit. The screen dimming/brightening happens to often and randomly to be part of my apps and I even noticed, in some apps, that just touching the screen causes a brightness change.
Even if this is by design, it is far too distracting.

My 701 is doing this as well. Turned off auto brightness, turned off power saver, rebooted. When it comes back up the device acts like auto brightness is on, with screen brightness fluctuaating randomly. Turning power saver on and off again seems to solve it, but that behavior is very annoying - it's why I turn auto brightness off in the first place.
US SKU running 4.3 installed via ota, no root or unlock or anything - straight stock. Its also my second device, my original had a bad cable and wouldn't charge. Serial number ends in 072259.

Driving me nuts
I'm having the same problem and it's driving me nuts!
I'm quite convinced it's a software "feature" but currently there seems to be no way to turn it off?
It's one of those "Adjust brightness of the screen based on content" or "Changing LCD refresh rate and colors for power saving" but sadly it does it the wrong way around (This has been going on for a while now, manufacturers don't really get it). When there is a lot of bright content the brightness will rise and when there is mostly a dark screen it will fall.
Of course, this should happen exactly the other way around. When there is a lot of bright/white on my screen it should lower and when there is mostly black it should become brighter thus giving you more contrast but keeping the overall lux that comes off your screen the same...... My Intel graphics notebook does this too and it's very irritating. There they do it by manipulating the LCD screen and lowering the refresh rate and other tricks to save battery. First thing I turned off.
However way it goes though, you should be able to turn it off!

I'm having the same issue. I think it's the smart dimmer option Asus have used before but they forgot to include it in the Asus customised options. I'll have a dig through the ROM to see where it is stored.
I'm having this problem as well.
I have my brightness set to about 80%, Auto-Brightness Off, Power Save Off.
It is very annoying when reading magazines that have a lot of white background. My screen will be stable for minutes then, often on a touch, will change the screen brightness, seemingly by 5-20%.
I was just getting ready to return it, and thought I would check here to see of anyone else has this problem. Has any actually called Asus with this complaint? I would be interested to know if they see this as a hardware defect, software bug, or working as designed.
PS - I just placed a technical support request about this on the Asus Website. Here is my problem description:
Even with automatic brightness & power saving turned off, the brightness of the screen will change over time, often seemingly in response to a touch. (Reading Mode is Off as well.)
The period between changes can vary from several minutes to 30 seconds. It happens both while docked and undocked. It happens with apps and just at the launcher.
The amount of brightness change is 5-20% and it will often seem to step through some values before it stops at a particular one.
Given how fantastic looking the screen is, this unwanted fluctuation is particularly annoying.
I also own a TF201 and have not experienced this problem on that product.

Yep me too and as soon as I root I'm going to see if the same fix will turn it off
There seems to be no way to disable this. Some believe it's the light sensor, but I've taped over mine with black electrical tape and tested and I don't see any difference in the behavior. Check our my Youtube video if you are a user who doesn't see the issue (look for threads in this same XDA forum).
I've finally been able to get someone at Asus to look into this and it's been sent to TW for review. I haven't heard anything back yet. I strongly recommend that other people who are annoyed by this (I find it tremendously distracting) to search on "asus escalation" which will bring up a special mailbox. Here is the link (although I do not know if the link will work for you). This should get looked at by someone with at least some ability beyond reading a script. If enough people do this, I think that they will fix it. Since you can temporarily override it by toggling smart saver on/off, it has to be fixable by software.
