3 Button Question - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Captivate is one of the unlucky phones that download mode is deactivated. I've searched the forums only to see bricks everywhere when people are rooting with this problem. Is there a safe way to flash or an adb fix that allows you to enable without the risk of bricking my phone? I purchased my phone used and cannot warranty my phone due to this so I don't have room for error. I'm tired of my stock ROM lag and bloatware. Its been interesting adjusting to this stock ROM after using Cyanogenmod for so long on my old phone. Ideas anyone?

You could flash this to get you back to stock with the 3 button fix.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439
then you can flash away.

I am stock. My 3 button doesn't work. If I root and something messes up, I cannot get into download or recovery mode to fix it.
I can't even get into download mode via adb. I'm just at a loss.

I know I would be if I could get into download mode in order to do so. It is a requirement to flash this, that's my problem.
I hold the volume buttons and insert the USB and nothing happens but the phone charges and the battery is displayed on the screen.
I've loaded all of the software and tried to do this on two computers. One runs Windows 7 64bit and the other runs Windows Vista 32bit. I don't think it's a driver issue, I can adb into the phone but I am also denied permission when I try to use commands like adb reboot download on both computers.
I don't know what's going on but it's a lot more complicated than I've dealt with. I can't find anyone having the problems in the forums or anything.

This happened to me too when I went to stock using the odin that DG posted a while back. What's weird though is that I was able to get into dl mode no problem. I've flashed my phone just fine 3 times up until today when I went to flash the most recent cog. I used that odin to flash back to stock. At that point, I could no longer get into dl mode.. dunno. But, I had already rooted since going to stock. So, I just proceeded to flash. Weird. I'll follow this thread to see what the fix is.

I see now. Are you familiar with ADB? You can just use the adb reboot download command while your phone is plugged in and it will reboot into download mode. You have to have Android SDK installed and all your Samsung USB drivers installed as well.
Edit: Sorry, I missed the part where you couldn't do adb reboot download. Have you tried the one-click root?

Shouldn't I be able to get into recovery/ download mode before I even think about altering the phone? A simple error could cause a problem I could easily fix in recovery. Without recovery my phone would be bricked. Should I worry about this?

Well, I can relate because I don't have a 3-button phone either. What I did was first root my phone with the 1-click posted in the forum, that way, you can use adb and get into download mode. Then flash the Stock with 3-button fix, then flash whatever cog rom you want. I have used that method and everything has worked fine for me, but of course, follow those instructions at your own risk.

Thanks, I didn't even think about needing SU to be able to get into download mode.
I used 1 click root, did the 3 button fix, and flashed clockwork with Rom Manager. I've got it going now. Thanks a lot.

[FIX] Enable download mode by force adb push update.zip without permission

MY Phone Condition:
My phone was previously install with voodoo rom and use clockwork recovery to restore to my stock rom that i backup and it crash half way.
My phone was hardware lock this mean no matter how i press the volume and power button , i will never get into download mode. non of the method posted work !
My phone cannot use "adb reboot download" because there is no OS and it was stuck in the recovery loop.
It does not have clockwork recovery because i formatted my internal sdcard
If i do have clockwork recovery and i use restore image or install new from zip , i still stuck in the recovery mode after reboot several times.
My phone does not mount to internal sdcard because i don't even know what i did on this part.
I believe i screw up my partition of the phone.
DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.
You need the Samsung USB driver and you can get it from Here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
First Part
1. Download update.zip from the link below. This was post by another member.
The post is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804305
2. Place the update.zip in tools folder so you can push it into your phone by using adb command
3. Plug usb into the phone and your phone should be on the Android system recovery <2e>
4. Use your volume button to select reinstall package, don't press power button yet.
5. constant "adb push update.zip /sdcard" from computer , you will get permission denied.
6. While you are constantly pushing the adb command from computer. press the power button on the phone so it install update.zip from sdcard.
7. This is the part where it force adb push into sdcard without permission
8. once the update.zip install completed. unplug the usb cable from the phone and take the battery out.
9. put the battery back to the phone then press on both volume button.
10. While holding both volume button , plug in your usb cable and it will boot to download screen.
If you need use Odin to flash your phone to original stock rom. Go to the Second Part
Second Part:
If you get black screen with only 4 light on the bottom after flashing from Odin.
Follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728698
There should be T959-PDA.tar,T959-CSC.tar and T959-Phone.tar within the package.
Check "Re-Partition" , "Auto Reboot" and "F.Reset Time" check box. Use the PIT 0512 version. Use "PDA", "PHONE" and "CSC" from the link above.
After flashing with Odin, you will loose the download mode. repeat the first part and you are good to go.
Here is the link on rooting the phone

You figure it out after all. I already stated the condition of my phone ! My phone was pretty bricked at that point. There is way for me to push any files into the phone because i don't have permission and my phone will not go to download mode by using the volume button. It just stuck at recovery mode.
There are guide out there teach you to use "adb push download". This method only work if you are in your phone and you turn on debug mode. My phone crash at the clockwork recovery bootloader. Then i formated my internal sdcard that hold the clockwork. next i push a stock update.zip that does not have su and busybox so i lost the capability to push anything into the phone.
no download mode , no permission, no sdcard --> You tell me how can i use the method that post few week ago ?

unfortunately, i was one of those careless people to brick my phone via Voodoo.
Firstly, i tried to "FLASH" the disable_voodoo zip file via Clockwork, i put it in root, and never created any folders. i knew i had to disable voodoo before flashing but my steps were wrong.
sadly enough, my phone was also HW locked, so i got it exchanged. now im not using voodoo YET and i my new vibrant can handle OC and has the recovery/download mode via buttons.

i use shell to create the file that disable voodoo. after disable voodoo , i was able to do restore and install new rom unfortunately after restore or install new rom , it still reboot into recovery.
I also forgot to disable voodoo, and this was before there were fix instructions posted. So i basically effed up my phone to the point of being stuck in the samsung recovery loop, no hardware download mode, no clockwork recovery, no update.zp, no adb download.
I really thought I had completely bricked my phone, I tried this just out of desperation and what do you know, push update.zip over and over and click and it goes through, which allowed me to get into download mode.

nice , you just have to re-root and install the new rom again , if it brick again , just use this method and you are good again.many of us forgot to disable the voodoo before we restore or install new rom and this crashes the phone.
Need some help really bad
Ok so I have a similar situation as you did (OP), only mine is a bit worse... In my irrational "in the moment" fear of the situation, I used adb reboot recovery to get into recovery mode (HW locked phone) and I did the option that deletes all the **** on the phone and restores the phone to its original format (I think it reinstalled the OS or something, because it looks brand new). So now, whenever I boot up, it does the annoying black screen with the 4 glowing buttons thing for a while, and then eventually the OS actually shows up on the screen. Then it does "scanning media" thing over and over again, but thats not the main problem. I figured, hey this isnt so bad atleast I found your thread and would be able to use your method to help restore my phone... the problem is that somehow my "settings" button is totally gone from the app menu, and I cant get it into debug mode, so I cant use either adb or your method or ANYTHING!! My phone is practically bricked as I cant do anything because its constantly laggy and turns back to the black screen thing, and then when it is showing the homescreen I cant do **** because even swiping to another screen takes like 5 minutes to do cause its so laggy. So basically I ****ed up, and I really need some help.. Im kinda a noob at this whole thing and im really outa options as far as I can tell.. does anyone know what I can do to repair my phone? Thanks!

[Q] wtf. I just CAN NOT get my phone into recovery mode

I was on Continuum and decided to flash back to stock. Of course Odin would freeze, forcing me to break out my jig.
I finally got it into download mode and flashed back to stock
I used SuperOneClick (like I have so many times before) to root and enable non-market installations
Well, it rooted just fine, but I couldn't enable the non-market stuff, it says "reloc_library[1251]: 2738 cannot locate '_ZNK7android6Parcel15setDataPositionEj'... CANNOT LINK EXECUTABLE
I cant get my captivate into recovery through 3-button boot, and ROM manager is completely unresponsive. When I click "reboot into recovery" it just does nothing. Same with installing a rom, or restoring a back-up. Any ideas?
Hmmm... It sounds like you might need to reflash the phone...
Can you try this alternate method to put your phone into Download Mode?
1. Turn off your phone, pull out the battery.
2. Hold both volume UP and DOWN buttoms (and keep holding them until the end).
3. Put in your battery.
4. Plug in the USB. (You won't need to ever press the power button using this method).
If that doesn't work, you might need to get a USB Jig somewhere (either buying one or making one yourself).
this can help, 3 button fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812434

well if you're on stock you can't enable non market app it's not included in the package plain and simple. but if you can push update zip into your internal sd and flash cwm recovery you maybe able to flash an app apk's there. the problem is you have unresponsive button combos. solve the button combos first. you will likely need a jig or if you can get into download mode try installing the leaked froyo maybe it will solve your unresponsive buttons.

[Q] download mode not accessable

This is my first post ever so please forgive me if this is in the wrong section.
I am not new to rooting and/or cm7 or download mode. I have used odin on my fascinate and continuum. And I have also had cm 7 on 2 other phones, the Fascinate and the Droid Incredible. Late a few nights ago, I flashed back to stock eclair on my captivate and used kies to update to uckb1. I then rooted and and flashed cm7. Not thinking, I already knew i could not access download mode with hardware button combos, but i forgot. My cappy is running cm7 wonderfully!! However i went to flash back to stock so i could try kh3 and found i could not access download mode. I can get into recovery using both the power button in cm7 reboot recovery as well as adb reboot recovery. I have tried:
adb reboot download
adb shell
reboot download
heimdall one click un brick
The only other thing I have tried is installing the 3buttonfix.zip. It did not work though as I assumed it wouldn't.( Is the three button fix designed for rfs/bml partioning?)
I have already ordered a proffsionally made jig so I should be able to get into download mode when i receive it. But is there any other way?
Thanks in advance! Sorry if i sound like a noob!!

Get a Jig for the future. I believe you can use terminal emulator and type in there:
su *enter*
reboot download *enter*
I am getting my jig tomorrow! But terminal reboot download does not work either. I really just want to know if there is anyway to get back download mode without the jig. just curious. And if the 3buttonfix.zip is designed for bml/rfs partitions?

have you tried installing a different rom from rom manager? i dont know too much about that setup but its something worth looking into. that may fix your problem since CM7 is based on the open source version of android and likely doesnt have the typical bootloaders (i dont THINK anyways)

I tried flashing fasty 2 from rom manager. The phone reboots after install driectly into cm7 and still no download mode. This is what I expected as Fasty 2 is designed to run on top of the bml partitioning. And since cm 7 when installed converts to mtd, it does not have any effect. This is also why i suspect the 3buttonFix.zip will not help me any. Though I saw a post here on xda where someone flashed 3buttonFix to cm7 and was able to get into download mode again. It did not work for me though

Can't boot, getting a yellow triangle...

First of all, I'm sorry if the answer is somewhere, I searched, but I "only" found many threads with suggestions for JIG use... The three stickies of Q&A also don't present related information I believe...
After some stuck situation in odin, I can't boot the phone. I get a yellow triangle, between a phone and a computer icons. Even if I try to charge the Phone, I get that static screen.
There's anything I can do without using JIG? I cannot enter download mode (at least with the traditional way), I always get that screen. As fair as I know, the phone is still 2.1 with official firmware (i was trying to apple the 2.3.6)

Yes. I'm wondering if my Google Nexus S drivers didn't not conflicted with the drivers I installed. I don't know.
Well, I'll try with another laptop, if that don't work, is it advisable to use a jig connector from a "trusted" seller? I'm asking because I already saw a comment or two along the about blewed (is this a word?) up phones.
Hey mate had the same issue your gonna have to get a jig as a lot of the i9000's came with corrupted boot loaders so you can't get into download without the jig and the screen your on isn't download mode I know which one your talking about with the phone the triangle and the computer

Do I risk blowing up the phone using JIG?
No the jig basicly makes it so a certain voltage signal is sent to the CPU triggering download mode no risk at all

I tried with another laptop with very well configured drivers, and didn't worked. Still didn't detected by odin. When I tried with another galaxy it works, after entering download mode...
I'm not admired, because before the brick, I was not able to enter the download mode with como keys, I shouldnt be surprised that does not happen now..
Follow this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494493
1) Uninstall your drivers, and re-install the ones following the instructions and link above.
2) Pull your battery out for a few mins and then put it back in and go into download mode (power, volume down, home button).
3) Download stock + odin from the link above, and start odin, and connect phone to pc through usb.
Your phone should be detected -- this is where you got stuck right? I'll assume if its detected, the rest you can figure out (plus its in the link above)
Good luck bro!

That would be a good suggestion if could get into download mode Tried everything, including some other solutions that I found around the Web. Looks like the bootloader was corrupted since the beginning, and now that I need it more than ever (because the black screen of death phone-!-pc), I stucked until (hopefully) i get a JIG... Already bought one, have to wait a few days to receive it. Until then, I'm going to use a old nokia.
Jig is only option then install a stock gingerbread that will fix 3 button combos

Thanks a lot. Managed to get one that revived my phone well.

[Q] Tried flashing to stock, now I have a password prompt blocking me

So, I was trying to update from a 4.1 rom to a 4.2 one. After a bit of fumbling and a few status 7's, I managed to get stuck with a broken operating system and a status 0 on every rom I tried to install. So I decided to flash to stock with Heimdall using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238093. Now, when I tried rebooting my phone, I'm faced with a password prompt. As soon as it gets past the AT&T World phone splash screen. Regardless of what key combo I press.
So, any suggestions? I'm open to anything short of hitting it real hard with a hammer.

That's the rub. I can't seem to get past the password prompt to put it in download mode. Otherwise that would have been the first thing I did.

The prompt comes up before download mode? This shouldn't happen. Download mode for me take priority over everything, including the AT&T Splash. If I go into download mode, it goes from being off straight into Download mode. Can you take a picture with another device?

Either that or when I try entering download mode, I'm not really sure. None of the button combinations seem to change anything, then the device loads an icon where an android robot is taken out of a box, then I get the prompt.

I think that's the stock recovery? Download mode should look something like this:

Anyone else care to chime in?
You've tried Vol Up + Plug in USB?

I get the feeling that the methods you are using to attempt to get into download mode simply aren't working. Depending on your device, what boot loaders you're running, and how annoying your device feels like being that day the methods vary. The most foolproof way is to buy or make a jig which will put you into download mode every time. But the most recent way I've done is do a battery pull. Providing you don't have power button issues that causes the phone to turn on on its own replace the battery. Then plug your USB cable into your computer and while holding down both volume buttons insert the USB cable into your phone. That should boot you immediately into download mode.
For other button combinations to try look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953930

Thanks! That worked. I've never heard of that one. Now to see if I can get my phone back to a workable state, and then on to Jellybean again.

Simple flashing of JB rom (and bootloaders if needed) should do the trick. Never seen that passcode prompt ever, so odd. But glad you got it into download mode

Yeah. That prompt confused the hell out of me. Thanks for the help! I'm still having a bit of trouble, though. I can't seem to find any files still hosted with CWM on it, and the JB roms won't flash straight through the stock recovery console. I tried a kernel too, but verification keeps failing on them. I'm assuming its the stock recovery that's causing trouble, but I can't find any files still hosted to fix that with.

I know, that's what I'm looking for. Specifically, a Heimdall one since I have a Mac. But most of the links are broken. I have an old Windows machine I may have to break out if I can't find one soon.
You need to flash a kernel with CWM. Try Corn Kernel (look at tut in my sig then go to step 6a., flash that
