So heres the synopsis on what my issue is:
first of all-
phone: Samsung Captivate build 1010
current OS: (botched install of Darky 8)
problem: no recovery menu capability, stuck in reboot loop (will not go past ATT Logo), can go into download mode but odin does not see the phone
I botched a Darky 8 install. I attempted to install the rom to my captivate via rom manager but to no avail. I then decided to give the install a try via clockwork and had luck. the rom was not to my liking so I went to mount the internal sd and proceeded to delete all files internally to make a fresh odin install possible (as I always do). It was at the time of restarting my phone that I realized the rom I install was accidently the I9000 rom on my captivate, thus forth being a possible source of my issue. Currently I have a phone that is stuck in a reboot loop any time I plug it into a power source, or attempt to power it on. While in said loop the phone will not go past the ATT logo, and as it cycles, at the I9000 screen a robot voice pops up saying restore system. Ive attempted to reflash back to stock with the stock captivate odin3 OCD, but I am having no luck with the phone being recognized by odin (run as admin). I am currently running Mac OSX 10.6 with windows vista on Virtual Box 4.0, and have had luck previously with flashing the phone back to stock after I decided to try new versions of cognition. Currently my phone can only go into download mode and not recovery due to the boot loop. please help asap, this my only means of communication with my family on the other side of the states
Try multiple USB ports/different computers if possible. I had a similar issue after flashing an i9000 rom. I could get into recovery but the power button wouldn't work for selections and in download mode my computer wouldn't recognize it. I just kept at it and eventually it worked.

going to try, redoing my virtual box in hopes that it was something stupid, and also trying the other usb port on my macbook.
Have you tried using a different cable? I had the same issue with a bad flash and Odin would not pick up my phone. If it did, it would nit complete the flash back to stock. I switched cables and it worked fine.

cable is fine considering I am still able to bring up the gadget serial on my virtual box with the phone.

sadly I wished that work, I tried using adb reboot recovery, and in the attempt, the phone was not able to be detected. Should this be done in hopes to catch it at the right time in the boot loop or in download mode. Ive tried both.
So can you still get into Download mode? If so I would suggest finding another computer to use. For some reason, last week, my PC that I have been using to flash for months decided not to recognize my phone in download mode.
So I switched to my laptop, loaded the ROM. I tried reinstalling drivers and all kinds of stuff but nothing worked. I backed up my PC and re-imaged it and it's working again.
Another person on here had to go and manually remove all references to the USB Driver and re-install it.
I would say just try re-installing (with the phone in DL Mode) the USB drivers with the phone plugged in and see what happens then. Hopefully the OS will detect the phone and you should be golden.
And that mechanical voice is voodoo... need to be careful what folders your deleting even if you are going to flash ODIN.

Odd I was told your perfectly fine to do so, and then from there do an odin flash. Ive done it before, but oddly enough I think what screwed me was because I did it during while in the rom, vs while in 2.1. I just wanted to try to get a clean slate. doing the master clear code from samsung never really deletes the left overs from say clockwork and such on my internal sd.
problem was the virtual machine, plugged it into a friends computer and all was done within a couple of mins. leave it to emulation falling short :/
I've been having many problems with updating my Captivate to Froyo using Samsungs' Kies Mini. I'm up to the point in where it downloads the new firmware, then when it's done it says that it cant be upgraded. My phone isn't rooted and I used Odin to return back to stock. Any ideas?
Check to make sure that usb debugging is enabled I just had the same problem and that fixed it
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Tried it, but still didn't work.
Edit:
Just thought I throw this out there, mounting it while in debugging mode doesn't work either.
You need to be in download mode at that point.
connect USB to Computer
remove battery from phone
replace battery
hold down both volume buttons
insert micro USB into phone
*Download Mode!*
Hope that helps.
I dont think you have to go into download mode. Kies doesn't recognize it.
clemmie knows what he's talking about. worked for me first time.
When would I go into download mode? And sorry for doubting you
when it tells you to.
The thing is when it's done downloading the update, it says that my phone cant be updated and to take out the battery, put it back in, and try again.
Hi:
I was wondering if there is anywhere that the update can be downloaded and then installed through Clockwork.
Thanks!
Master Clear on Odin not working
I have looked and have tried everything to get the Master Clear on Odin to revert to 2.1 and it doesnt work, anyone have any suggestions? I have been trolling the forums and still no such luck.

master clear cannot revert your phone to 2.1 if you are on 2.2. you need to use odin to flash back.
I upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2 through Mini Kies, I must have missed some step or it is not updated completely.
On restart on the phone, it hangs at the Galaxy S startup screen. If have to press the Power button to bring up the HOME screen
Cannot connect to Market any longer
It is very slow as well
Steps used to update 2.2
Installed Mini Kies on my system
Upgrade option was used, SGH went into download mode, installed and restarted, but did nothing after that
I removed the battery inserted it back, also used the VOL buttons to go into DOWNLOAD mode
It did nothing in the download mode, had to remove the batter again and restart after waiting for a while
It shows FIRMWARE version as 2.2.
Have I missed any step, any suggestions?
I currently have a botched version of Froyo 2.2. And I have been having troubles with everything i've tried. I followed this video to a T http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDtxnH4lFuk and ODIN keeps giving me problems. It will not detect and add my phone thats it. Can someone please help me, and if you need additional info on my phone just let me know. Please help me i'd like to revert to eclair and update the offical 2.2 atNt update to my phone. Thats all I want to do. Also Im running Cognition 3.04 and kernal 2.6.32.9. I tried to use the Kies update but it says my phone can not be updated. Please help me! And my phone is rooted.
Have you tried multiple USB ports
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
If other USB ports do not work, and if your Captivate build number is 1009 or lower (you can find this number underneath where your battery is, on the actual phone itself), then try this method:
Also, make sure you know how to go to Download Mode, and that you have the drivers installed properly.
This is the manual (or "full") Odin, it's taken from a post by icezar1 in the Development Forum:
Do not use this if you want to send your phone back to ATT or Samsung for warranty!
Do not use this if you know you flashed a -LOW- ODIN package (when opening the PDA***.tar or CODE***.tar you will find inside boot.bin or sbl.bin)
Use this if you want to go back to stock before flashing a custom ROM.
Use this without worries if you changed your boot screen image or if you flashed the secondary boot loader which allows you to enter download/recovery with key combos.
Download the package from here
Download the phone drivers from DG's thread if you dont have them already. [Note: You should already have this xpiamchris, it will be the same one I asked you to download and install]
How to:
Remove sdcard and SIM card from the phone
Extract JF6_secure.zip somewhere.
Boot your phone in Download Mode
Run Odin3 v1.3.exe
Plug in your phone via USB
Click on the button PDA
Choose JF6_secure.tar.md5
Click start
Wait and do not unplug cable until it is finished
Yes I have, could it be because i, on an old computer running windows xp with usb version 1?
I did everything you said, and still nothing, Odin didnt even read my phone when I plugged it in. My phone was set with debugging on, and in download mode. I extracted the JF6_secure.zip to my phone and the Odin folder im using to do this, because I was not sure were you wanted it. And still nothing.
Try a different USB port. Reinstall the drivers as well.

usb 1.. maybe.. drivers might have a hardware requirement for 1.1 or 2.0 and up.

you extract to the computer anywhere, use odin to find the file anywhere on your pc. you dont need it on the phone.
Okay I got odin to read my phone (COM3) phone was in download mode, debug mode, and the program ran for awhile, looked like it was going to work and that it failed. What could I possible be missing? I have the current Captivate drivers, the SDK files, and the adb files. This had been going on for two days now and all i want is to go back to original eclair firmware. I appreciate you guys helping me by the way. We will get this eventually If I want to just say screw this and install serendipity, how would I do that? Currently I have cognition 3.0.4 or another...would I still have to reflash my phone so cognition is off?
It'll be the "best" idea to.
But most good ROMs (I'm sure Serendipity would), do a wipe of themselves before the install anyway.
If going back to stock is giving you this much grief, might as well try to get on to Serendipity (personally for me anyway).
And sorry im such a noob but one question, how do I install serindipity? Do I put in on my phone, boot to recovery, seclect the serendipity file and install? Thats it i dont have to delete cognition or anything??? I also have clockwork if that helps any. Which drivers are you referring too as well? I know there is drivers for the phone and google usb.
Yep, that's exactly how you do it. You might want to back up your stuff using Titanium Backup though.
Thank so much. I will do that and post on here how it goes you are a tremendous help Venom.
No problemo, anyone here would've done the same...
And good luck!
One more noob question do I have to rename the serendipity.zip to update.zip?
No, keep it as the normal filename. In CWM Recovery, there should be an option where it says "install .zip from sdcard" (or something like that). Then select "choose zip from sdcard". From there, you can choose the .zip to install (it will list all .zip in your sdcard).
Thanks for all your help going to try it now, can you give me some Thanks i know i didnt do anything for you but i just want a few lol...i gave you a thanks on all your posts
I have a question just found a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzDb6m7sQ7A&feature=related and it says to dial this number (*2767*3855#) with out the ()'s to restore my phone to factory, i havnt tried it but does seem like a good idea or not?
You can do that if you want, but be reminded that EVERYTHING will be wiped out. Including your root access, etc.
Will i be able to re-root it again though??
Yeah sure, no reason you shouldn't be able to. But I'm not sure what base ROM your version of Cognition is running... Might get a bit weird/confusing.
So lately i have been having a ridiculous amount of issues on my phone. RAM was constantly used up it kicked me out of programs all the time, battery sucked, itd be laggy and jumpy power button stopped working etc. so last night i decided screw it i was sick of it and i was just going to start fresh so first i just did the system reset or whatever on the phone.
Now heres the problem, after the reset i turn the phone on it boots up and goes to the tutorial, when i either skip the tutorial or finish it i get an error message saying the tutorial isnt working properly and asking to force close. so i close it and then all i get is a black screen with the clock on the top. Not of the buttons on it work and it wont do anything but pull down the menu.
ive tried the odin 1 click master clear but it and my computer wont recognize the phone along with me putting it into download mode and trying to flash to stock. Odin doesnt see it and my computer says the drivers are broken and it wont recognize the device.
I re-installed all the drivers but the same results occur. I did however manage to have my computer see it when i put it in samsung keis mode (can still choose that from the drop down menu when i plug it in) however i dont know if that will help anything.
So any and all help will be greatly welcomed as i now am without a phone and need it very soon. Thanks

If Odin isn't being friendly to your phone, try using Heimdall. You can get all the same things you need from Odin, but it's a different set of drivers and a different program, which might solve your issues.
If you need one, here's a Heimdall One-click to stock Froyo that AdamOutler made. It's really easy to use - just download it, let it install, and click flash.
alright ill try it and see how it goes thanks a lot
no luck. Heimdall doesnt recognize it connected and my computer still says it wont recognize it so im guessing thats the main issue first...

If you haven't already, try turning your phone and computer off. Then reboot the computer and let it settle. Once it's all set up, move your USB cable to a port at the back of the computer (or somewhere else on the computer if it's a laptop).
Once you've done that, start up Heimdall. Once it's up and settled, start up your phone in download mode, then hook up the phone.
both have been restarted a couple times but ill try that again. i grabbed a different usb cable as well. this time it allowed heimdall to recognize the device at first but when i started it said no drivers and it i followed the instructions it said after however the options heimdall said werent available. im confused why it would so no drivers as i just reinstalled them and when i plugged the phone in for heimdall it said drivers installed.
but no at the end of trying a couple times the device is back to unrecognized and heimdall cant see it

Heimdall uses a different set of drivers (libusb) instead of the ones that samsung provides. I would suggest that you go ahead and uninstall the Heimdall drivers as well as the samsung drivers, reboot the computer, and run Heimdall again. Let it finish installing the drivers and be ready, then reboot one more time and try again.
eventually got it working and got it back to stock 2.2 however my 3g isnt working and when i try to run the update on the phone to gingerbread it wont connect to att. i thought maybe i could just flash up to gingerbread but when i put it in download mode and connect it odin still doesnt recognize it and this was after rebooting both

If you were able to get it to work with Heimdall, and you're wanting to go to stock GB, I would suggest using Adam's UCKH3 Heimdall One-click. This will flash stock AT&T Gingerbread (well.. technically that doesn't exist yet, but..) and the i897 Gingerbread bootloaders at the same time.
Just make sure you have all your important stuff backed up to something that isn't your phone before you do it, and that you have a good connection between your computer and phone.
well that one worked so thanks but still no 3g or any data connection

Just to check, make sure your IMEI matches the one on your phone.
To do this (assuming you're on AT&T), go to the dialer and type *#06#.
Write down that number, then open your battery case.
Take out the battery, and look on the sticker with the barcode. Above the first barcode should be your phone's IMEI. Double check to make sure those match.
If not, you may have some issues with the contents of your /efs folder.

If you're wanting one that's rooted and has CWM, check out the one in my signature. It's stock KH3 gingerbread, with CWM, rooted, but no bootloaders.
hey just wanted to thank you for helpin me out all day. that last heimdall gb helped me about immensely. ive finally been able to install some custom roms and what not successfully. i used to follow every direction super close and nothing ever worked but finally going my way so thanks a bunch ha
I updated my rooted Captivate from Froyo (official build) to Gingerbread 2.3.5 (official build) today, and the process seemed to go smoothly until the phone needed to reboot at the end of the update. I found that my phone was showing the At&t animation and then going to the Galaxy S animation and then repeating the process instead of booting properly. I do not know why because I unrooted my phone using Super One Click before I updated. I am freaking out, what should I do now?
how did you update? what method? official stock? or official plus a CWM kernel?
there was no point of un-rooting. flashing stock will un-root a captivate. flashing a custom rom, it will be rooted already...
when in doubt, flash to stock again. but make sure its correct stock.. once again what method and where did you get it?

I updated (from official Froyo stock) using Kies Mini to the Samsung official stock (Gingerbread 2.3.5). I have never flashed before. How can I do this and how can I find the correct stock to flash to?
As a note to anyone who might find themselves stuck in the same predicament as I was in, the Odin3 One Click Downloader program by "designgears" is very useful. Using the button combinations I found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351224 I was able to get my phone into Download Mode. I then used the Odin3 program (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989) to painlessly flash my phone to the stock 2.1 rom. This was just a matter of connecting my phone to my computer, running Odin3, and clicking "start". After my phone rebooted, using Kies Mini, I updated to 2.2 Froyo. I waited for my phone to reboot, disconnected it from the computer, reconnected it to the computer and then (using Kies Mini again) updated my phone to Gingerbread 2.3.5 (which, so far, I am very happy with).
WARNING: Make sure you wait before Odin3 is completely done running!! When I was running the program I thought it was finished and almost unplugged my phone prematurely (I am fairly sure this would have ruined my phone, but do not quote me on this). If in doubt, just wait a few minutes.

Just flash a KK4 rom or leaked KK4 in dev section. Should fix it. BTW never use kies....its ebil....
I'm having a similar problem, with my Captivate stuck in a loop at the AT&T splash screen. However, I can't access Recovery mode or get to download mode - I've tried every 3-button combo variant I've found on the forums, as well as taking out the battery, holding the volume +/- keys, plugging into USB & re-inserting the battery.
Would it be safe to assume that the only way I'm going to be able to get into download mode now is with a USB jig?
EDIT: Prior to this, I was running Froyo 2.2 - went to flash the ICS for Captivate ROM - it didn't work, but I could still get into recovery mode. So I simply booted into recovery, did a factory reset and clicked the "reboot" option on CWM. That's when it started boot looping.
Okay, so I got a USB jig and put it into download mode. Plugged it into a free rear USB port and Vista started automatically installing drivers for it, so I ran the Heimdall One-Click Stock. It saw my device as connected so I went ahead and clicked "flash", and I got an error msg saying the device wasn't found. Prompted me to install drivers, so I followed the prompts and attempted to install the drivers from the zadig program.
The first time, the install timed out after 5 minutes. Rebooted my PC and ran the Heimdall One-Click utility again, and this time after a few seconds I got a prompt saying that the drivers have been successfully installed. However, in the taskbar I got a pop-up saying that driver installation failed.
Now, every time I plug into a USB port I get an error of "USB device not recognized", and when I run the Heimdall One-Click util it says my device isn't connected. I've tried it on two seperate PCs (both running Vista), on multiple USB ports and still get the same error.
Should I just uninstall all the Samsung drivers and reinstall?
EDIT FOR FUTURE REFERENCE: Hi! If you're reading this, you may've had the same problem. What worked for me was uninstalling Samsung Kies, uninstalling the Samsung mobile phone drivers, going into regedit and deleting all SAMSUNG registry keys. After that, reboot, put your device into download mode, plug into your USB Port, run the Heimdall One-Click package of your choice and just wait!

You can't go wrong by uninstalling both sets of drivers (Samsung and Heimdall), rebooting, and reinstalling just the Heimdall Drivers. Heimdall also only installs drivers for one USB port, so trying different ports is key (I know you already did, and you're on the right track).
Here's a good Heimdall thread if you need it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113195
