I updated my rooted Captivate from Froyo (official build) to Gingerbread 2.3.5 (official build) today, and the process seemed to go smoothly until the phone needed to reboot at the end of the update. I found that my phone was showing the At&t animation and then going to the Galaxy S animation and then repeating the process instead of booting properly. I do not know why because I unrooted my phone using Super One Click before I updated. I am freaking out, what should I do now?
how did you update? what method? official stock? or official plus a CWM kernel?
there was no point of un-rooting. flashing stock will un-root a captivate. flashing a custom rom, it will be rooted already...
when in doubt, flash to stock again. but make sure its correct stock.. once again what method and where did you get it?

I updated (from official Froyo stock) using Kies Mini to the Samsung official stock (Gingerbread 2.3.5). I have never flashed before. How can I do this and how can I find the correct stock to flash to?
As a note to anyone who might find themselves stuck in the same predicament as I was in, the Odin3 One Click Downloader program by "designgears" is very useful. Using the button combinations I found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351224 I was able to get my phone into Download Mode. I then used the Odin3 program (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989) to painlessly flash my phone to the stock 2.1 rom. This was just a matter of connecting my phone to my computer, running Odin3, and clicking "start". After my phone rebooted, using Kies Mini, I updated to 2.2 Froyo. I waited for my phone to reboot, disconnected it from the computer, reconnected it to the computer and then (using Kies Mini again) updated my phone to Gingerbread 2.3.5 (which, so far, I am very happy with).
WARNING: Make sure you wait before Odin3 is completely done running!! When I was running the program I thought it was finished and almost unplugged my phone prematurely (I am fairly sure this would have ruined my phone, but do not quote me on this). If in doubt, just wait a few minutes.

Just flash a KK4 rom or leaked KK4 in dev section. Should fix it. BTW never use kies....its ebil....
I'm having a similar problem, with my Captivate stuck in a loop at the AT&T splash screen. However, I can't access Recovery mode or get to download mode - I've tried every 3-button combo variant I've found on the forums, as well as taking out the battery, holding the volume +/- keys, plugging into USB & re-inserting the battery.
Would it be safe to assume that the only way I'm going to be able to get into download mode now is with a USB jig?
EDIT: Prior to this, I was running Froyo 2.2 - went to flash the ICS for Captivate ROM - it didn't work, but I could still get into recovery mode. So I simply booted into recovery, did a factory reset and clicked the "reboot" option on CWM. That's when it started boot looping.
Okay, so I got a USB jig and put it into download mode. Plugged it into a free rear USB port and Vista started automatically installing drivers for it, so I ran the Heimdall One-Click Stock. It saw my device as connected so I went ahead and clicked "flash", and I got an error msg saying the device wasn't found. Prompted me to install drivers, so I followed the prompts and attempted to install the drivers from the zadig program.
The first time, the install timed out after 5 minutes. Rebooted my PC and ran the Heimdall One-Click utility again, and this time after a few seconds I got a prompt saying that the drivers have been successfully installed. However, in the taskbar I got a pop-up saying that driver installation failed.
Now, every time I plug into a USB port I get an error of "USB device not recognized", and when I run the Heimdall One-Click util it says my device isn't connected. I've tried it on two seperate PCs (both running Vista), on multiple USB ports and still get the same error.
Should I just uninstall all the Samsung drivers and reinstall?
EDIT FOR FUTURE REFERENCE: Hi! If you're reading this, you may've had the same problem. What worked for me was uninstalling Samsung Kies, uninstalling the Samsung mobile phone drivers, going into regedit and deleting all SAMSUNG registry keys. After that, reboot, put your device into download mode, plug into your USB Port, run the Heimdall One-Click package of your choice and just wait!

You can't go wrong by uninstalling both sets of drivers (Samsung and Heimdall), rebooting, and reinstalling just the Heimdall Drivers. Heimdall also only installs drivers for one USB port, so trying different ports is key (I know you already did, and you're on the right track).
Here's a good Heimdall thread if you need it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113195

So heres the synopsis on what my issue is:
first of all-
phone: Samsung Captivate build 1010
current OS: (botched install of Darky 8)
problem: no recovery menu capability, stuck in reboot loop (will not go past ATT Logo), can go into download mode but odin does not see the phone
I botched a Darky 8 install. I attempted to install the rom to my captivate via rom manager but to no avail. I then decided to give the install a try via clockwork and had luck. the rom was not to my liking so I went to mount the internal sd and proceeded to delete all files internally to make a fresh odin install possible (as I always do). It was at the time of restarting my phone that I realized the rom I install was accidently the I9000 rom on my captivate, thus forth being a possible source of my issue. Currently I have a phone that is stuck in a reboot loop any time I plug it into a power source, or attempt to power it on. While in said loop the phone will not go past the ATT logo, and as it cycles, at the I9000 screen a robot voice pops up saying restore system. Ive attempted to reflash back to stock with the stock captivate odin3 OCD, but I am having no luck with the phone being recognized by odin (run as admin). I am currently running Mac OSX 10.6 with windows vista on Virtual Box 4.0, and have had luck previously with flashing the phone back to stock after I decided to try new versions of cognition. Currently my phone can only go into download mode and not recovery due to the boot loop. please help asap, this my only means of communication with my family on the other side of the states
Try multiple USB ports/different computers if possible. I had a similar issue after flashing an i9000 rom. I could get into recovery but the power button wouldn't work for selections and in download mode my computer wouldn't recognize it. I just kept at it and eventually it worked.

going to try, redoing my virtual box in hopes that it was something stupid, and also trying the other usb port on my macbook.
Have you tried using a different cable? I had the same issue with a bad flash and Odin would not pick up my phone. If it did, it would nit complete the flash back to stock. I switched cables and it worked fine.

sadly I wished that work, I tried using adb reboot recovery, and in the attempt, the phone was not able to be detected. Should this be done in hopes to catch it at the right time in the boot loop or in download mode. Ive tried both.
So can you still get into Download mode? If so I would suggest finding another computer to use. For some reason, last week, my PC that I have been using to flash for months decided not to recognize my phone in download mode.
So I switched to my laptop, loaded the ROM. I tried reinstalling drivers and all kinds of stuff but nothing worked. I backed up my PC and re-imaged it and it's working again.
Another person on here had to go and manually remove all references to the USB Driver and re-install it.
I would say just try re-installing (with the phone in DL Mode) the USB drivers with the phone plugged in and see what happens then. Hopefully the OS will detect the phone and you should be golden.
And that mechanical voice is voodoo... need to be careful what folders your deleting even if you are going to flash ODIN.

Odd I was told your perfectly fine to do so, and then from there do an odin flash. Ive done it before, but oddly enough I think what screwed me was because I did it during while in the rom, vs while in 2.1. I just wanted to try to get a clean slate. doing the master clear code from samsung never really deletes the left overs from say clockwork and such on my internal sd.
problem was the virtual machine, plugged it into a friends computer and all was done within a couple of mins. leave it to emulation falling short :/
Hi
My brother (a no-geek) has a captivate, and lives in a different city (I donot have physical access to the phone). He visited me few weeks ago and I installed CM-7 on his phone, i know my bad. Some of his videos were not working, so i asked him to update to the latest CM-7 build. He download the build, saved it on int sd_card and used ClockWork Recovery to install the selected ROM. Upon reboot it entered in never-ending splash screen. I found couple of odin ROMs, and posted him link, we tried to flash them, but no good.
Status --
The COM ports are detected, but the process at times halts at <SET PARTITION> at times at <SET UP>... at times all thread completed successful would show up as soon as hitting START.
I dont have a captivate, can someone please suggest a sure shot solution and post me a link for ODIN, with a root rom. I am using Team Whiskey on my Vibrant, and I prefer stable modified ROM because of its features and power.
I can explain him the process on skype using desktop sharing, but the ROM should be good. Thankyou very much in advance.
if he can access recovery, try wiping everything thru recovery then start again
Phone is in Soft Brick state.
Phone is in Soft Brick state. So i cannot boot into the phone and go to CW recovery.
What he needs is just a stable usb connection that's how he got to this point, bad communication between the phone and computer. On cm7 I beleive you need the nexus s drivers installed. Also make sure it's plugged into a usb port that's attached directly to the motherboard (back of pc, port 1 on laptop)
@studacris
I think the drivers are already installed good. The connection is also good, as i can the COM port detection in the ODIN, with one of the boxes changing its colour from NO-COLOUR to YELLOW-COLOUR.
I think the ROM builds are not good. They go action-less during flashing, actually nothing (progress bar) comes on phone, it keeps showing the Downloading screen, endlessly. Odin usually is stuck at at <SET PARTITION> at times at <SET UP>...
Can someone post a link for a test one click odin. Well i would prefer one click.
You did try DG's JF6 one click, thats the only one I use, how are you establishing dowload mode on the phone or are you even doing this.

+1 If you read the OP the problem is he can't flash back to stock he is having problems flashing anything period, @ the OP correct me if I'm wrong but I have a strong hunch that you are leaving out some pretty crucial steps, I have a feeling that you are not putting the phone into download mode, I also believe that you are gonna need to make a jig and pay a visit to your brother to help him out especially if its bricked the same way mine just was flashing with cm7 roms. But if you are getting a com port to show without having to put in download mode then you are farther along in the boot process. If this is the case you may be able to adb into recovery do a full wipe excluding /boot and reflash. Will the PC recognize the phone with it in its current boot locked state? If so then recovering should be somewhat of a breeze.

- I am getting to downloading mode by
--- pressing the "vol +" and "vol -" buttons and then connecting the usb cable to the computer.
--- then removing the cable, after the phone enters the download mode. Then, start the odin and connect the phone through usb cable again. The odin detects the phone on one of the COM port.
- I havent tired wiping the phone through recovery. But i need to get to recovery first. I dont know in a soft brick state if i can get into recovery.
- regarding getting back to 2.1... i would like to flash to the latest version. Kies update is not an option for me, as i not in US.
This phone was purchased from craiglist, i used one click root method to root it and the same script an option to get the unlock codes. After that i experimented a lot on the phone with various scripts. Last i was using congnition on it. Then saw CM7, i liked it on my vibrant, so i flashed it on my captivate (which i got for my brother). Now i have to get back to some stable modified ROM... I am thinking about trying Srendipity or cog ROM... but before than i have to install a rooted stock ROM.
That is the story and issue... but thanks a lot for help. Any more suggestions.

Try putting the phone into download mode after you open Odin. Which version of Odin is this? Also, installing the nightly build of CM7 again often fixes the boot loop on the newer builds. I would try that if you can get to recovery.

I have an issue, I was updating my Captivate to 2.2 with Odin3 One Click and that worked fine, then for some reason I cannot explain I tried to use Odin to upgrade to 2.3 (the blow fish one) flashed the image then got the restart with the blowfish and then used Odin to complete the process as per the instructions and got soft brick, I fixed this with the one click unbrick, then it went into a boot loop.
The loop is AT&T screen then fuzzy colours and a restart (like a graphics card has gone haywire).
I can get into the download mode by removing the battery, plugging the USB cable in holding the volume buttons then installing the battery the download mode appears but Odin is not picking up the phone.
When it is in the loop I can get Odin to identify the phone but when I try to go into download mode it won’t identify it. I have tried with adb and it does the same thing.
Any suggestions? I have looked at the forums for a long while so my apologies if this has already been covered.
Have you installed the necessary drivers on your computer?

You may want to also take a look at the "Captivate Connection Issues" thread - it has some steps to help get you connected in download mode.
Once you have it connected, you can probably safely flash a Gingerbread stock rom to get back to a clean place to start flashing from.
Hi,
Yes forgot to mention that I have installed the correct USB drivers, Odin picks up the phone during the loop so that tells me that the Cable is fine and the drivers are working. I will try to re-install them just to be safe.
Thanks I will look through the connection issues threads and see if that helps, I am at work at the moment so will be later in the day.
The garbled bootscreen happens when you try to run gingerbread with froyo bootloaders. You must have chosen a bootloader free package. Instead, for your first time flashing to GB (and first time only), use a package with bootloaders

What is this blow fish one that you speak of? Korockinout13 is correct that you are getting the garbled screen because of an incorrect bootloader. You may be having issues because the ROM you flashed might be an i9000 based ROM and you will need different drivers.

The bolded line is why ODIN no longer detects your phone. The Heimdall driver has been installed. You can either go grab a Heimdall one click from here or remove the Heimdall driver (trying another USB port may work) and then try using ODIN again.
Yes it was the Fugu Root's one and I didnt update to a Gingerbread bootloader before I flased it onto my phone.
Thank you for all your help, I will never mess around with my phone at 2am again.

Hello everybody!
I've tried to find a solution, but without success.
Today I tried to install CWM on a french Galaxy S.
I've rooted the phone with z4root and after I started on download mod with adb.
Then with Odin3 I installed this file "Root-XX_OXA_JVK-v2.7-CWM3RFS.tar".
After that the phone rebooted automatically, unfortunately it's rebooting eachtime on the galaxy s logo.
The problem are that I can't boot on download mod or on CWM.
When the phone is off and I plug it on charger, it doesn't charge!
I think my phone is bricked.
Do you think you can help me or it's dead?
Is there a hard reboot procedure or something like that?
Thanks

did u try vol down + home + power button to go to download mode? if it can do that, the problem is just find some driver to make odin recognize your phone. search for "usb driver for samsung galaxy s" in google
then you can bring back your phone to live by downloading any rom you want and flash it via odin
ps. but if you cannot go to download mode, JIG USB with 301 K ohm will help you look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0

Sorry, I should have been more specific. When I reinstalled the drivers I had actually uninstalled KIES and installed just the drivers.
I do have an update though but still can't get it to boot completely. Late last night I decided to try to get download mode to work one last time before passing out and pressing Vol-, Home and Power actually brought me to the recovery screen for the first time in my phone's life! "F YA!" was the only thing I could think at the time so I first went through and formatted/wiped every option I could find then installed the CM9 that I knew worked and now I get to the alien with the matrix-esque background and it stops there. I plugged it in and left it on that screen all night and that guy was still staring at me this morning. I tried download mode again but my computer still doesn't recognize it.

So I was using safestrap recovery to play around with some custom roms, and I was going to switch to a new rom so I thought I was going to delete everything from Rom-Slot 1, but actually ended up going to the section where you can check off everything you want to delete from the the rom. I ended up checking all except micro SD card, and ended up deleting all the data from the stock rom by accident. I tried restarting the phone but all I see now is a stuck "Galaxy Note 3" on boot-up.
I've tried using Odin (with the BL AP CP CSC and PIT files ) to flash back and Oneclickbin.exe, but none work. They all give me a fail message shortly (or a couple minutes) after I press start
Additional notes:
Rooted with kingo root
I got the OTA update on the stock rom (The one with the black stock keyboard)
Please Help!!!
How do I fix this?!?!

I'm using Kies 3 and tried emergency recovery. It didn't work. Kies 3 actually doesn't even recognize my note 3 as a supported device, but I attempted the recovery anyway. I can get to step in the recovery where the recovery window on my computer says, "Do Not disconnect your device from the PC" but the loading bar never goes past 0%, then after a while it'll give me another fail message...
