[Q] How do I check for root? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just bought a Nexus 1 and it was advertised as "unlocked". How can I check to see if it is rooted? It has 2.2 but I would like to use a custom ROM. I have rooted G1's before but never had to use ADK or SDK.

All Nexus' are unlocked. I think you are mistaking that the phone is unlocked for carriers and you want to unlock the boot loader. You can flash a custom ROM on a Nexus without unlocking the boot loader though.
Look at the Wiki for how to on rooting without unlocking the boot loader and thus voiding your warranty.

Easy root check it look for a "Superuser" app in the launcher.

Only if you have a custom rom.
If you want to check for root, type su in terminal.

Or download a simple app that requires root (like a flashlight), and see if it works...

No.
If you have root, it will be there.

question about oneclick root / unlocking bootloader for ROMS?

hi, i'm from the x10 forum converting to a nexus one =) I searched around and I'm a little bit confused about rooting for flashing roms. I see some guides about unlocking the bootloader first, then rooting. ( i think old method??) Now theres the one click root, am i required to unlock the bootloader first, then use the 1 click root, because i know the 1 click root doesn't unlock the bootloader.
so first do i have to unlock bootloader, and if i do, can i use the 1 click root with unlocking bootloader? and can i load a rom after i root without unlocking the bootloader?
I also read on a different website that unlocking the bootloader is only required for phones locked to a provider, so does that mean that if i unlock the bootloader, my phone will also be network unlocked?
Just want to get this right so i dont' brick my new phone tomorrow
You don't need to unlock the bootloader.
Once rooted, you will need a custom recovery to flash new roms.
Make sure you use a recovery that is compatible with your screen (SLCD requires the newer Amon Ra).

U can use this new SuperOneClick v1.4 (Root, Enable Non-Market App, Get UNLOCK code):

Better to Unlock bootloader
One click root is an amazing thing. It helps you root your android and install recovery without unlocking bootloader and voiding your warranty. But its better to unlock your bootloader just to be on the safer side. Stock roms flash both the Rom and the recovery. Froyo 2.2.1 even reverts an already rooted device.
Warning: your warranty will be void if you unlock bootloader.

Wrong, the thread's 1st post states what devices it works on and the Nexus is listed...
"It works with almost all phones and all android versions. (including the i9000, Droid, Nexus One)"
Okay but why do we Nexus folks care that the app can get Samsung unlock codes and enable a feature that was never disabled on our phones in the first place?
And why would we prefer a Windows app to an on-device root method?

@danger-rat thanks for the info, i didn't realize that there would be a difference between slcd and amoled, I got the amoled one so i think i'm safe on most recoveries?
@galaxys and inferus- oneclickroot is the best, thats how i got my x10 rooted, but sony's epic fail is forcing me to change over to something more updated, i'm sick of being stuck on 1.6. so no worries about bootloader?
can anyone answer my last question, is my phone locked to tmobile only until i unlocked it? or does it come unlock, and it just a tmobile version because its compatible with tmo 3g?

The Nexus isn't locked to any carrier, but the hardware is specific to different frequencies. For example, I took my T-Mo nexus to the UK earlier this year, switched out the SIM for an Orange one, and everything was great. However, if I use an AT&T SIM, I will only get 2G speeds because AT&T uses a 3G frequency that's not supported by the T-Mo nexus hardware.
Do a wiki search on the carrier you want, and it will list the operating frequencies for their network - just compare with you phone specs for compatibility.

Any reason to unlock the bootloader?

It used to be that you had to unlock in order to root etc.
But now with one click root applications like SuperOneClick etc, is there any reason to unlock the bootloader? Is it required for any custom ROM procedures?

Not really (although it does make things easier to flash - using fastboot is very convenient.)
But then again, is there any reason to not unlock it? It has been shown numerous times that HTC will honor the warranty despite an unlocked bootloader, while it has never been shown that HTC has refused warranty service because of an unlocked bootloader.

Ah, so the only thing unlocking does is provide access to using "fastboot"?
I know; I warranty swapped mine that was bootloader unlocked I'm just asking for general information.

Yes, unlocking your bootloader = the ability to flash images to your Nexus One using fastboot. That's it.
What if I am not planning on using a new rom? I want to stay on stock, but say, just want to overclock. I don't want to lose any data.
Would that make sense to just root?

I think you can just root then via SuperOneClick.
I have another question about unlocked bootloader. How can I tell if my bootloader its unlocked? I know usually I have to flash slp to unlock it or set S-off and if I'm not sure it should still be locked, but when I flashed modaco rom it said something about unlocking bootloader. I didn't want to but couldn't abort! So when I boot into bootloader it doesn't say unlocked but any way to tell beside that?

You'd see a padlock icon at the bottom of the 'X' screen as you boot up if you are unlocked.
Thanks, so I'm locked.

[Q] Unroot/bootloader advice

Hi guys, need some clarification please
Have had my M7 for a few weeks now. I unlocked the bootloader and 'perm rooted' using the toolkit. It still has the stock rom on it.
I am trying to remove the root but I have read conflicting information.
1. I have managed to relock the bootloader (shows RELOCKED and TAMPERED) so does this mean I cannot put a stock ROM back on to unroot it? Do I need to unlock it, put on stock ROM and then relock it?
2. I looked at Mike1986's stock ROM but it has issues with installing paid apps. So, is there any other ROM I can use to return to stock?
I think that's why people don't like unlocking because you can't get rid relocked
I don't mind the fact that it says 'relocked' (have unlocked it again) but want to remove root if possible

You will have superuser on your phone in the settings it will say unroot after that uninstall superuser all done
I guess it's an issue of warranty. If it says 'Relocked', is it still void? I didn't know this to be an issue until I saw it, guess I was spoiled with the Gnex lines.

Tried that - pressed unroot, it closed and removed the app but it is still rooted
You sure you will still be unlocked get a root checker app and see
I am also facing the same problem. Tried the uninstall on supersu but after rebooting the phone, supersu is still there.

Yep, Tibackup and LP still have root access and SuperSU is back on reboot

Developer Edition Bootlloader

I have a simple question.
I recently swapped my GS4 for a HTC One 64GB developer edition. I just like the freedom of custom rom etc. Anyway. I want to make sure the bootloader in unlocked. How do I go about that? Also assuming is unlocked I will nthen need to root before I can install a custom rom correct?
I know very noob questions!
Thank you
I use Hasoon's tool kit here for everything. Plug in and select reboot to bootloader and when it comes up on the phone it should say unlocked.

Awasome...Thank you I'll give it a try!
Ok...so my bootloader is unlocked....I can use the same tool to root? The tool has an option to perm root...is that it? Or do I install custom recovery first?

Hi
greetings,
First install custom recovery
now if you want to be on stock ROM then flash root.
and if you want to flash a custom rom directly flash the custom ROM as custom ROMs are pre rooted roms
and yes perm root is the option.
and using toolkit is a nice way but i would suggest you must try to do things manually. Toolkits are 100% safe but doing things manually increases our knowledge its my personal experience OR you may use toolkits but later at-least give time to read threads which explains things which have to be done manually will help you in future.
JUST MY 2CENTS OF CONSERN
I know I'm unlocked...but not rooted...so my question was if I use the same toolkit to root my phone

Quick question. AT&T Nexus 6

So I have been a die hard Samsung guy since the beginning of Galaxy s. Today I decided to go with a nexus6 from at&t. I know zero about the phone and the Motorola **** tied to it. I am very familiar with odion and and using custom Roms and recoveries with my note phones. My general question is, will any ROM work on any nexus 6 or is it service provider depending...? Also if anyone could post a link to the best root method for the AT&T Nexus 6 I'd greatly appreciate it!

Any nexus 6 rom will work with any nexus 6. Some might not work well on sprint.
As for root learn to use adb/fastboot. You flash recovery via fastboot and then you can flash root via recovery (I recommend TWRP) . It all starts with the bootloader unlock done via fastboot which WILL wipe the phone.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/how-to-nexus-6-one-beginners-guide-t2948481 is a great guide to learn how to root / unlock bootloader etc. Don't use toolkits as they typically don't teach you anything.
All ROMs should work with Sprint at this point, unless they're using the AOSP APN list instead.

The guide zephiK linked to is great. Once your setup, unlocked, rooted and have a custom recovery; do a full nandroid backup then try any of the great roms and kernels here (they are not carrier specific, they work with all of them);
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development and http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/orig-development
If you don't like it or get stuck, just boot into recovery and restore your backup. Have fun!

you dont use adb to unlock your device nor to root it. you use fastboot to unlock the bootloader and to flash a recovery, then your new recovery to flash supersu(root). so adb isnt part of rooting, at all.
