[Q] internet explorer - HD7 General

Is it my phone, or is the internet explorer kind of slow?! It takes ages to load a page in comparison to Android and iOS!

Any site in particular? The pocketnow video comparisons seemed to indicate that the three platforms were fairly similar in terms of web browsing performance.

I've seen the video, however the real experience is nowhere near. It was some kind of early build of WP7 in the video not the final software! That's why I'm wondering if it's my phone or HD7 in general as it's my second unit (first one had some screen issues).

Could be a network issue -- do you get the same problem on wifi?

Must be your phone, mine is comparable to my desire

Actually, it's pretty strange. I've done a little test and the speed is absolutely fine over 3G. The issue seems to be WiFi related only (got a pretty decent broadband and no issues so far with the speed while using other phone or computer).

I just did a side by side page load over wifi comparison of the HD7 and the Desire with results as follows - loading the Register website having previously cleared cache etc. on both devices,
HTC Desire - 8 seconds to fully load the page (excluding any flash stuff)
HTC HD7 - 10 seconds to fully load the same page.
Other points to note, The HD7 requires 1 less button push to access a favorite that the Desire does, the Desire reflows text on pinch to zoom (HD7 does not) Big screen of HD7 makes web pages easier to read than the Desire. HD7 page scrolling is smoother, more fluid.
In other words, I don't feel there is much between the two devices on the web browsing front, if anything, the Desire edges it because it is about 20% faster and of course has the option to display flash (although I have flash set to "on demand" on my Desire because if a vidoe loads it totally b*ggers up page scrolling and can make the device unresponsive)
You pays your money and makes your choice!

any suggestions? i'm thinking connection or radio rom, but if latter why now?
i also am lacking a good browser, ie takes up to a min to load xda-devel front page or ebay, can't display contents of auctions & freezes & jerks while loading every few kb at a time. not to mention dusplaying pages all wrong, columns one word wide etc.

If your browser is slow it may be the DNS service. Google OpenDNS or go to opendns.com. Give that a try first. OpenDNS has a guide & it's pretty simple to test out.
Okay, thanks for the tip - but why would it be a dns issue? Dns is to locate a site, this locates fast but takes ages to load the page. On wifi through the dns service in my router - or via hsdpa. Makes no difference. As my router dns is perfect and I can reach sites in seconds on the pc, I'd expect using the same wireless link that is isn't a dns issue - or is my thinking faulty?
More immediately - does anyone have any suggestions as to why I have no sound when someone calls me except on speakerphone?
Greg.
forum's front page and ebay takes long to load cause PIE is a **** browser. Try using opera mini instead.
As for the speaker.........seems to me like a hardware problem. IF it is software, the only thing i can suggest to you is a hard reset.

okay, got trashed on the dev side. lol

is there anyway to run complex games on the mobile platform? guess since it is not a comonplace application it does not warrent a place other than trash.
my question is... can a mobile phone handle the large files that some internet games use.
i am playing a game called EVONY, it uploads like 3 to 4 mega bits every time i sign on and i assume it is going into ram on my pc. is there any way my phone could do this?
my friend was over tonight and he has win mobile. touch pro 2, he could not connect. i could not either, but usb tether threw my laptop could.
any one.... ?
Despite the fact these "smart phones" go for the same price as desktops, no. And the only device close to having anywhere near enough internal storage for it would be that Apple phone.
And Ram wise, well that's just a big joke when I think about the g1's lack of it.

lol, i know. i could carry my lat top and tether it with my phone. i know it is improbable. but imposable?
Not entirely sure what you're asking.
But you can tether your 3g/edge/internet connection from your phone to your p.c. if you have root and the proper application.
As long as you have a fast 3g connection you can acess the internet and do whatever your browser allows you to on your laptop. I've been on pandora, myspace, xda, android sites, etc etc etc with tethering.
PLayed a few games but it might get a little shotty when recieving texts and such.
I think you're confusing a few things up.
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evony
System requirements: ADOBE FLASH 10
That would be your problem.
Uploading 3 or 4 megabits (i.e. 500 kB) has nothing to do with "going into ram".
The phone hardware, as far as I can tell, meets the system requirements of the program you are looking at running, except maybe fitting the UI onto the screen (since the screen is very small on a phone): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/30/Evonyscrshot.PNG
And judging by the screenshot, I would guess that the game is similar to warcraft (i.e. older version 1, 2 from the mid 90's). Not particularly complex and certainly not beyond the phone's hardware since those old versions of warcraft ran on desktop computers significantly less powerful than these phones are.
FYI: the ability of android to run this game may be approaching if adobe ever gets their fingers out of their butts and delivers what they have promised -- flash 10 on android. Apple phone will NOT EVER be able to run this game since apple has basically refused to allow adobe to do flash for ifony.

Cons of a rooted NC?

I'm on the edge of pulling the trigger for a NC. Since the NC was never intended to be a full fledge tablet I'm sure there are some annoyances from you rooted users. Once you get everything setup what are the cons? I have a rooted Samsung Vibrant running ClockWork on Team Whiskey, Nero ROM. What I'm reading I don't think I will go to Froyo since it is definitely usable but I get annoyed by such things like having to turn on/off screen to fix screen lag. I will most likely just keep it rooted from stock. The reason I'm interested in it is:
Lightweight, small form factor
Great resolution
Of course price.
I have two gripes:
1. No physical back button
2. Adhoc wifi requires turning on/off wifi
Both of these are hardware issues and not related to rooting.
I don't use the in-store feature so not having that doesn't bother me.
Do it, you can always unroot.
Magically transmitted across the interwebs by my kickass NookColor!
Just want to clarify, don't have a NC yet. Don't want to buy it as an ereader.

I don't know that the lack of physical back button bothers me, it has a built in gesture for back (swipe to the left on the menu bar) so it's not really a limitation, more a preference thing. The only real downside I've seen is lack of in-store features. There are some issues with the root, mainly some market issues where for some reason all of the programs don't show up. I used the NC for a couple of weeks in stock form and then decided to root, definitely worth it just for the sake of getting a browser with multi-touch enabled. However, I read a lot so that factors into how much I like it.
If you're just using it as an android tablet, it's really good. No GPS, no cameras, no 3g connection, but other than that it's fast with the best screen I've seen on a tablet and is just the right size. My phone has a 5mpx camera, 720p video and GPS and I have it on me all the time, so no need for any of that in a tablet. It also acts as a hotspot, so no need for 3g on the tablet. It's a perfect compliment to a decent smartphone.
If you love to tinker there's no cons. (and if you want a back button, Autonooter comes with Soft Keys that'll put one on the screen for you)
Despite the time it took to learn how to do it, and what to do with it afterwards, I got what I paid for and more. I love to learn and troubleshoot, so rooting this device has been a real treat.
At the moment I have a fully functional tablet that I use quite often around the house and at work. It's a convenient browser (I use Opera Mobile which has pinch zoom and slightly better page rendering than the build in browser), a quick source of the news thanks to a program included in the Autonooter kit, and a useful quick-note taking device.
I'll admit, my primary use for it is browsing, but when you root this thing, you can use any browser you want. I use Opera, but Skyfire and Dolphin HD are also good.
In addition to that, it makes a great portable movie player. The built in player supports MP4 and one other format, but if you root it, you can download Rock Player and play most commonly used video formats.
It's Youtube performance is excellent too, and there's quite a few Youtube video downloaders available in case you want to save your favorites to the SDCard.
Speaking of that, you will want to buy an SDCard. It doesn't come with one, and you might want more than the 5GB free of space you get out of the box.
All in all, it's pretty much a computer, and once you learn how to do everything to liberate it from it's shackles, there's no limit to what you can do with it.
As a tablet, it is awesome, and only getting more so. Lets be real - its GPU is the same as the Droid X, and is not the most perful on the market. Tegra 2 (and one or two others) will soundly beat it, but at a price. Cheaper T2 platforms tend (so far) to have horrible screens, poor battery life, and are large. Other devices like the Tab, just are way over priced.
I think the nook has struck an excellent ballance. It has an excellent CPU, a capable GPU, plenty of ram, and one of the best looking screens out there. I love its form factor (the bezel is one of few NON ugly ones out there), handling, and capabilities, and the price is excellent ($250).
It is also really getting a community behind it, and i think we will see in the near future, many more custom ROMS which speed things up, add features (bluetooth), and generally improve user experience. Right now is an exciting time to be a nook owner..
If you are not planning on reading you MUST buy a memory card. Many android apps are hard coded to look in /sdcard for things and can't read or write to the internal memory on the nook. Google earth is one example. This could probably be fixed by a developer in a custom rom.

That was one of my main reasons for choosing it over the Archos 70. I think the fact that the NC provides such great bang for the buck and is available at retail outlets across the USA gives it the potential to have a much larger following than something like the A70.
Adding bluetooth functionality will complete this thing.
The only con I've really felt was no mic :/ there slapped in crappy 10 dollar mp3s but not a eReader for memos/notes (tho its not useful) I could see voice search for books valuable.
Obviously want it for Voip not memos, Bt will be a fix but still.

Ditto to above. The lack of a Back button can be worked around, and really only comes into play while in certain apps that don't show the standard Nook status bar at the bottom. So you can't swipe. Using SoftKeys, and setup the right way, (see forum for more info on that), then you can change the Nook button to launch SoftKeys, which gives you the Back button, and also, as a bonus, a Task Switcher pops up at the same time.
The only drawback I see is that in order to have decent sized icons and text, you need to change the density of the screen. This is fine for everything except the built in Nook apps, like the Store and what-not. The reader itself is fine. It just cuts off some of the text, but it's still usable. Personally, I just use the Kindle app, anyway, and don't ever launch the Nook apps, so it's a non-issue for me.
EDIT: I also dearly want Bluetooth to work, so I can use my GPS and BT headphones. But at least there's a BT radio in the thing. Just need to get one of the wizards to get it working. Last I heard, it was working, but only to two feet. Give me 3 feet and I'll be happy. The lack of Flash is a real bummer, of course, but also to be fixed in an upcoming 2.2 release from B&N, or you could go and install 2.2 right now and boot from sd card. Apparently, it's working pretty well. And, the lack of a mic is a small bummer, but I'm also hoping a wizard will write a USB driver that will work with a webcam/mic. All do-able stuff. Just a little time needed.
As a tablet its great. It has shortcomings like others have said but you have to take into consideration that this hardware with an IPS screen for $250 is an absolute steal even considering those shortcomings.
I am a long-time Kindle user who recently got into the world of Android with my first smartphone purchase (HTC Aria). I have really fallen in love with Android, in large part due to the excellent community here at XDA. I had started looking for an Android Tablet and stumbled across all of the info about the Nook, after a week or two of research, I decided to just go for it. I figured if I bought it at Walmart, I would have at least 30 days to decide if I wanted to keep it... and even if I bricked it somehow, I don't think Walmart customer service would know the difference and would still refund my purchase. Well, I bought the Nook Wednesday morning, rooted immediately and ended up selling my Kindle Thursday night to a co-worker. This is the real deal and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an e-reader and tablet device, as long as they enjoy modifying it.
P.S. I haven't figured out why everyone feels the need to change the LCD density settings... everything looks great stock to my eye.

Just curious, what are you using ad-hoc wireless for? I use my android phone as a wireless hot-spot to provide internet to my Nook all night at work, that works fine, but I'm guessing that's not really ad-hoc or what you were referring to anyway.
I dont care for bluetooth, gps, or webcam. It doesnt bother me that flash doesnt work. I have flash on my phone and frankly, flash just makes webite load longer and most flash is just ads. It was an ok device preroot, now its a cheap capable tablet. I use it more than my pc. The only major gripe i have is that the edges of the screen seems to not register as well as the middle. But its not a dealbreaker.
Thanks guys. Just got one and its great! I was a bit skeptical at first after seeing before the root. Good info!

The issue with Ad-Hoc is that some devices can not connect to Ad-Hoc networks. They can only connect to Infrastructure mode WiFi networks.
So the problem presents itself when a rooted phone using a wireless tether app is only capable of sharing WiFi via a Ad-Hoc network (Motorola Droid). The Nook Color then can not see the Ad-Hoc network and is unable to connect.
So the Ad-Hoc WiFi fix allows the Nook Color to see and connect to Ad-Hoc networks as well as Infrastructure networks.
If you have a newer phone, like the Droid X, I believe those phones transmit WiFi via Infrastructure mode, so there is no problem connecting any device to it as all devices work with infrastructure mode.
I hope that all makes sense.
Yep, that explains it. I wasn't aware that older phones were using adhoc wifi. Is that a hardware limitation or a ROM limitation?

Hardware and software limitation, actually.
Most phones don't have a wifi chip capable of creating a true infrastructure-mode access point, but that is gradually changing. One of the reasons I bought an HTC Incredible is that it can.
But you also need tethering software that can use that mode. Newer versions of Wifi Tether can, for example, but older ones can't.

[Q] Viper One Internet/tethering issues.

Hello, I searched through the official thread and through here, to no avail, so I'll post and hope someone knows what's up.
While the tethering works (I get connected to the phone) it's really spotty, I can connect to a page and load it for a few seconds, then it drops and comes back, so on and so forth. This us obviously not ideal, but further testing shows that the internet access on the phone suffers the same issues. First boot up I couldn't load any web pages on the phone, second and third (and on and on) I can load them, but it's just like through tethering. I like this rom, it seems nice and fast, and I love sense 6, but this is an issue I can't have for long. My primary internet comes through this phone. Also probably unrelated, but I seem to be getting slightly worse 4g reception.
Should add, I'm on Verizon.

Need some help with Note 5 lack of features is it fixable??

Hi I am coming form a heavily used Note 2. As a business owner the Note 2 was my most important piece of equipment!!! Plus being always on the go it's flash video capabilities made being away from home easy. I never missed a basketball game or big fight. Watched them right on my phone. I remember being at a restaurant one Saturday night away from home and having the whole bar area crowd around my phone to watch a big fight. Pretty cool and useful. Unfortunately my Note 2 bit the dust and cant be fixed for reasonable money. Sprint store talked me into a Note 5 for my upgrade and contract renewal with a cheaper plan.
I was wondering if there are any ways to get similar apps or mods on my Note 5 Without rooting it. I am very dissapointed and feel like taking it back. Not impressed at all. Especially since I am out of pocket $200 and had to sign a 2 year plan. Maybe somebody can help or suggest some things. Or at least this can be a WARNING to potential buyers of the phones REAL LIFE CAPABILITIES AND LIMITS. Not some generic commercial hype or store sales pitch of since its a #5 it is better and does more things than the earlier numbered phones.
1. No live sports or new movie streams though web browsers
Lack of flash support ... I used flash websites to stream live sports or newer movies on my Note 2. I have downloaded the proper Adobe Flash version on the Note 5. I have also downloaded and enabled browsers like Firefox, Flash Fox, and Dolphin.
I have verified that flash is working. However, the sites for the live sports and movies DO NOT work. These sites all worked fine with the Note 2 stock browser.... Any other flash browser suggestions???? Anyway to download or install the Note 2 stock browser on Note 5?????
2. Mirroring. Watching EXACTLY what you see on your phone to a big TV.
All share Samsung data caster. I bought an expensive Samsung data caster that worked well to mirror my phone on to my living room TV.....Anyway to use this with my Note 5????? I don't see the option to on the phone.
Will a MHL cord to hdmi still mirror for a note 5??????
3. Using your internet and making a phone call at the same time.
Since I travel I use my phone as a modem for my laptop and computers....Tether... On my Note 2 with the PDA.net app it worked great. Was faster than any home internet I ever had. I could be on the phone and be browsing the web on my computer at the same time. It worked so well I cancelled my home ISP. It also came in handy even to just look things up on the phones internet while you were talking to clients.... I was VERY UPSET to find out that I can not do any of this on the Note 5. This is a major deal. I don't get this one at all. Any way to fix???????
4. Sound for music is not anything better.
5. Notifications and display are far less attention grabbing than on the Note 2. Easily miss texts or overlook them. The notification L.E.D.S are super WEAK.
6. My battery drains way faster! It does charge faster though. But I don't think this will be a good device to have where charging is not an option for a while.
7. You cant delete photos from the gallery... You have to open up the camera app to delete them... This seems so strange and pointless. Am I missing something here??????
Would appreciate any help or feedback on these issues. Thanks...
1. Not sure
2. Chromecast/Fire Stick, both work as I have personally tested this and both are available for under 50 dollars. (The screen mirroring option is in the quick toggles on your Note 5, mirrors everything on the screen not just compatible apps.)
3.Have not tested this
4. I think you need better headphones if you think it does not sound better.
5. Have not noticed this either
6. Disable unneeded apps, I am getting great battery life from mine.

2. I tried the the "quick connect" feature in the toggle down menu. IT WORKED with my DATA CASTER. I just don't like how it cuts the WI FI on too. i can live with that though. I now have mirroring without having to buy something else. Thanks!!!!
3. Yeah I have tested and confirmed with Sprint. Supposedly its a big deal and a lot of people are sending their phones back because of this. Literally just had a real life scenario where i needed to be on the phone and browse the web but couldn't..
4. I have $60 earbuds from Sienheiser. Maybe your ears work better or you have better head phones. I'm not willing to pay any more than $60 or buy another pair. They are less than a year old. But the sound is great. Just hard for my ears to pick up the difference. Both Note 2 and note 5 sound excellent though.
5. I also noticed that if you stay on a text message conversation screen and leave the screen on. . . . It will not ring or notify you if an additional text from that sender comes through. I don't like that at all. I want it to ring and vibrate for every text no matter what!
6. Can you clarify what you mean by disable????? Like delete???? Which ones did you get rid of????
7. I will look into QuickPic.....I'm guessing its an app in the play store?
Was your note 2 on lollipop? I have a feeling son of the things like notifications might be a lollipop thing not a note 5 thing

1) You had an Android device from 2012. The internet and Google have since moved on to HTML5. Flash is dead. Very few OSs support flash anymore. This isn't a phone issue. The unfortunate issue is your websites still utilize flash which is dangerous and a battery hog. A lot of security flaws and too much memory usage.
2)DL AllCast from the Google Play store, it hacks into any casting device. I have an AppleTV (back when I used to be pro Apple) and I use it constantly. All your casting needs whether it's a movie, phone screen, music, gallery etc all at your fingertips.
3)This is a Sprint issue not a phone issue. Sprint uses CMDA technology which requires dual cellular radios in order to surf and talk. Every other carrier supports simultaneous voice and data. I have Verizon (also CDMA, but I have dual radios in my phone) and can do it with my phone. When the phones hit a particular carrier, they decide to upgrade the radios to do surf/talk. If they decide not to which Sprint did not. You can't. Some claim this is a way to keep they're network bandwidth higher. Its 2015, regardless the phone should be able to do it.
4) The Note 5 came with a lot of new audio support modes. One feature I would recommend is using adaptic. It recognizes your ears ability to sense particular frequencies and changes the sound to your ears which makes a lot of difference.
5) You change change your notification settings in the individual apps your speaking off. The LED notification can be adjusted to your liking within settings. If this doesn't work. You can always DL an app that uses your phones flash to flash when your getting a notification (I know, I know.... Like an iPhone but it works great).
6). Lollipop has not been kind to device batteries. A lot of unnecessary system processes and apps. There are other posts within the Note 5 category that will guide you on debloating and disabling those packages and apps to gain better performance. Again not a phone issue but a software issue. Android M (which these phones will be first in-line to get) will change a lot of the problems they created in Lollipop. The Note 5 is not the only phone that suffers from this problem. A lot of them do.
7) Yes you can, but its hidden behind a sub menu. Long press on the photo you want to delete and it will pop open the delete function in the top menu bar (see image attached)
Hope this all helps. I suggest dumping Sprint and coming to Verizon. While it's not cheaper. It certainly is much better. Speeds, tethering, and service pretty much everywhere.

Thanks for all the info I really appreciate that!!!!!!:good:
1. Is 3 years really that long.... When you spend that much money for something i would expect to have that option. You don't have to use a or go on a flash site if you don't want to....Flash is alive and well. Like I had mentioned earlier, people who stream Live sports and recent movie releases are all still Flash sites. I do not know of one html5 site that live streams sports.... Would love to find one if its out there though
2. I got the stock app to work with my Samsung All share Data caster. It is really choppy though. Thanks I will give that one a try and see if its any better
3. Wow that makes me even angrier with Sprint. i have tried to go to Verizon and t-mobile. They both have said stick with Sprint. My bills would be over twice as much with them because they don't do true unlimited Data like sprint does. Even when they do offer it, they bottleneck and slow your speed down once you reach a certain amount of data... My data usage makes Sprint my only choice and the fastest for me.
4. Will try thanks!!!!!
5. Note 5 has that from factory. I have it turned on. but in the day light the white flash is not to visible. Also, not visible when the phone is screen up. I have played with the settings. The notification LED just isn't that bright, big, flashes frequent enough to work as well as the older one. The Flash notification though is super helpful at night or in the dark.
6. If I keep the phone I will look into that. However, I find all the battery life claims with factory settings....auto screen brightness, keeping all apps closed, with just normal daily use to be terrible. I find it hard to believe that getting rid of the bloat-ware will take it form terrible to acceptable, but i'll take your word for it ... I hope so.
7. No attached image is showing for me????? I tried tapping and holding the pic and nothing is happening.......still only gives the option to share.
I think dolphin browser still works with flash. you will have to find the flash apk download though.

trying to get the soccer streams to work isn't working for myself, but I was always able to get UFC to stream and NFL/CFL when I would try. I'll let you know later on if it works for me, might just be the streams are crap too.

Flash is dead:
http://www.businessinsider.com/google-chrome-wont-autoplay-flash-ads-2015-8
In device terms with technology coming out. Yes 3 years is old enough.
With phone service you get what you pay for. I've never had a dropped call, network failure, or internet outtage. And from previous experiences living in the sticks of Kentucky. I still got 4G Verizon. Now I'm in Florida and never lower then 3 bars of coverage. I pay $234 a month for two phones and a tablet. I pay for 10gb and I get additional 5gb of data added to my plan per month for free as I am a loyal Verizon Customer. So it works out great.
Idk why it didn't post so my apologies.
Here are photos of the deleting procedure and my battery life on my phone after stream lining it. I average 18-22 hrs on a single charge. Depending on usage.

Stated that i have the correct flash apk and Dolphin+ tried 4 other "flash friendly browsers" too. Some flash works but not all. none of the live sports stuff works....

I hadn't tried as of yet, but it raises the question. It worked for my note 2 and 3 when I had them

Still cant get flash, dolphin, and front row to work....
Some more updates
- Still cant get flash for front row to work with Dolphin.
More updates:
-LED notifications are super weak and almost not visible on bright sunny days
- Have missed several text because if I leave a text conversation open if a text from that sender comes through It wont notify you.
-Also all free messaging apps wont work while you are on the phone. Like KIK and others. You can not receive any of those messages until you get off the phone . Makes me wonder if Email is like this too???? How counter productive and backwards...
They literally have taken out more features and all multi tasking... So what do I care if the hardware is better????? IT DOES WAY LESS!!!!!

I use hangouts dialer and a google voice line to place calls and keep my data line open....

Yeah that part is true and no mapping and no nothing about data when your on a call. But you can hear a cricket fart at 200 paces! But again that is a sprint thing. Sprint blames it onSamsung but Samsung builds to sprints specs.
