[q] neeed help. - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok, i know frequent users may have seen this heaps of times, but i have taken a few days searching thru the posts and threads but found no clear answer.
i bought my galaxy s a few weeks ago and i have been reading into it since.
i want to root my phone and get the 2.2 update, however rooting doesnt seem very straight forward. there seeems to be many ways to root your phone out there and many lag fixes. the more i search the more i find. all i want to know is what is the best way to root the phone and best lag fix.
does rooting allow you to get paid apps for free? is it like cydia on the iphone? if not how can i do so.
and if you dont mind explain to me what flashing, and all the roms mean..
i thought that the galaxy would be alot more straight forward than jailbreaking. jailbreaking for me was pretty straight forward, rooting however.. i just dont know where to start.
your help would be much appreciated..
thanks in advanced,
derrick

It is so simple, I've helped out many people. If you want me to walk you thru I'd be glad to. Just PM me.
Hi sorry for the late reply but i havent got internet access available at home yet and that is one of the reasons i was hoping i could get someone else to root my phone for me
getting someone else to do it would basically not allow you to have any knowledge of the process what so ever
i would work on getting an internet connection and i also could walk you thru it
there are some REALLY REALLY great threads about rooting , some more simplified than others
the reason i would say to get knowledgeable on the subject is purely down to future releases
I am getting an internet connection but its not for another month and i cant wait that long really

go to a friends house. google pdanet and download and install on g1. u dont need root for this.. pdanet will allow u to use ur g1 as a modem. i used it before rooting.
If you're smart enough to find the xda forum, you're smart enough to root. It's really freaking simple these days
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=533731
Try that link as it helped me put the Hero on in less then 10 minutes, well after hours of trying it differnet ways
People are trying to help you here. If you have someone else do everything for you and something happens to your phone, then what are you going to do. This has got to be some of the easiest steps possible. If you don't want to do it yourself then I wouldn't root your phone.

ATT N1 Best MOD

Hey Guys,
Blast me as I know you will --- I just got my n1 for ATT last week after converting from a BB9700;
Questions -
(1) After rooting what is the best mod to do --- everyone has something to say buy I am debating from Cynagen vs ModaCo..
(2) Radio upgrades, Is there a new n latest one for my verison of N1
!!
Try "Search"......and wrong section to post this...
I was in the same situation as you! Just got rid of my 9700 and got a N1
I've been playing with Cyanogen 5.0.5.3 and more recently, 5.0.6.1-testing with the new .33.2 Undervolted/Overclocked/Extra RAM kernel. Everything is very snappy compared to stock and I couldn't be happier
I'm still looking around for radio roms

I'm going to recommend that you NOT ROOT YOUR N1.
Stick with the un-rooted phone for as long as you can.
First determine WHY you want to root.
Do you know shell scripting? You know much/little about Unix/Linux? Are you a power user? Are you an iPhone iBasher?
I've rooted and unlocked all of my HTC phones for the past few years, because I know what I'm doing. I read and read and read, searched searched searched these forums for reasons why I should or shouldn't do this or that.
You are new to these forums. New to Android™.
I say you should play with your new phone for a few months.
Continue reading here about Cyanogen, Modaco, Enomther, apps2sd, rooting, radios, overclocking, etc.
If and when you learn ENOUGH by reading, searching, slimming, and searching and reading some more ... if you feel you want to root your Nexus One - by all means, DO It MAN!

I will tell you why 95% of people want to root on the Nexus One. No need to ask a prospect.
The reason is because they want cyanogenmod!
You advice is poor rooting is child play compared to 360 modding.
N1 modding is key to enjoying ones phone.
I have to admit, I rooted my Nexus right away.
Having said that, I spent almost a year on my G1 without rooting it. At first I didn't know it was an option. After I started reading about it, I started to realize that it was probably a wise thing to do. It then took me a few weeks of reading to figure out what I actually wanted to do to my phone before I took the leap and finally rooted it and installed CM which made my G1 experience exciting again.
I mention all this because I agree with OrganizedFellow. Spend some time getting to know how Android works before rooting and adding new features. It will help you appreciate the hard work of the devs even more when you do put custom ROMs on your phone.
If you can't wait, I recommend CM. As for the radio, if your phone doesn't lose 3G and stays connected like it should, don't worry about changing the radio. I "had" to change my radio to try getting rid of my 3G issues that the phone shipped with.

in contrast, if youre not super comfortable with going through the whole process just dip your toes in the water first by trolling forums and reading, you can after all brick your phone. I agree with organizedfellow, take your time and find out why and what benefits. i have not rooted yet but leaning closer as i read more and find that i really need the tethering in case im stuck with no wireless while out on a job (also the different color trackball would be sweet). Out side of those im pretty happy with everything stock, add to it with the rumors of himem coming in a future ota update i think i will be set....just that damn tethering...
You cant go wrong with any ROM available right now, but I highly suggest you try Enomther's ROM as well.

are you serious? nobody said anything about the comparison of rooting an android device (software) to modding an xbox 360 (hardware).
So by your logic, someone should jump right into modding their console because replacing the engine in a Boeing 747 is harder.
To the OP. Take the advice of those suggesting that you wait. For starters, you can see if your device has any hardware issues. Yes HTC is warrantying unlocked devices but why not avoid that hurdle and sit on your device for a week or three to just be sure. While you do that, you can read all that you can stomach in these forums and plan your best course of attack.
Welcome to the fray.

+1 that is some great advice, and I would take it. I was just like you and I last week I rooted my ATT N1. I love it, but I must say that I have put a lot more time into it than I expected. I spent a month before I got the N1 looking into this whole scene and I felt that I had the reasons to root. I would at least spend the time searching forums until all your questions that you have are answered. No body is going to be able to give you a perfect ROM that is for you because there are many different ones out there and what is good for one person may not be the best for another.
I would spend the time to get to know everything before you get going. I would say I know my way around technology pretty well, but if I didn't have the nice folks from this forum I would of had a very hard time with things. When people tell you to "search" they really aren't trying to be rude. To root your phone is a personal choice that only you can make. You are the one that spent the money and people spend a bunch of time making our HTC using lives that much greater.
I spent almost 4 hours last week rooting and unlocking and I have spent easily 30-40 since then learning all that I can learn and I must say that for me it was the right decision because I learned a bunch of things about my phone and now when I have a problem I am comfortable that I can find a way to fix it myself. If I don't then I know where to turn to "search" for help.
If you have any questions I would love to help you out although I am far from a master at this trade. I spent a bunch of time and I have a whole notebook of printouts that I have found in various places all over the web (especially this site) I would be more than happy to send them to you, but just do yourself a huge favor and research, research, research, research, and then when you feel you are done research some more. It will help you in the long run.
Have fun with your phone and good luck
By the way I am running the latest Cyanogen and a few other things. I am having a blast with .apk like the HTC keyboard, and I must say that for me wireless tethering is the greatest thing in the world. I have only touched the very end of this world, and I am so thankful for all the people out there that spend countless hours making our lives a lot easier. I had a bunch of help last week and people really didn't need to spend the time to help me out. I have also messed around with the latest Modaco Sense ROM and I like that a lot as well.

[Q] Should I root my Note?

Hi XDA,
Before I put my query here, I must say this is a Kick-ass site I have come across in the recent years . From the Noods video to the 'Similar threads' feature that I see when I am about the write this post. Cool stuff and during my 2 hours reading threads, I see Dr.K is the most awesome and patient guy in this forum. Keep up the good work, I guess I will do my part from today too
Now coming to the point...
I am confused if I have to root my phone. I am actually very happy with my phone and its feature except for the fact that I get annoyed whenever I run out of credits while playing games like Contract Killer, Gun Bros etc on my mobile. When I Googled, I came across a few tricks which requires access to the root.
Now I need a little help here to convince myself to root my mobile. Please guys I did read a lot of forums but my only reason to root is for games. Should I or should I not.
btw my Kernel version ends with LB2.
Please advice

Rooted Galaxy S5 Active (AT&T) in Bootloop - How can i flash a custom rom?

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum, and new to all of this, so please forgive my ineptness and general cluelessness.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 Active (AT&T version) model SM-G870A. It was running 5.1.1 but was rooted. It also had debugging checked.
I was getting really irritated with all the bloatware that was installed by Samsung and AT&T because I hated opening my apps drawer and having to wade through panel after panel of useless apps. Not only this, but they ate up far too much of the space and resources on my device. And, just out of principal, the phone belongs to me. I paid cash for it, I don't have any kind of contract with AT&T, so why should they force me to have all their useless junk on my phone?
At first, I would have been happy just debloating it. So I used Dr.Fone to root it, and then I attempted to get rid of all the unwanted apps using Debloater by Gatesjunior. Long story short, I've now managed to get my phone into bootloop. Since then I've tried the different solutions recommended on XDA and nothing has worked so far for me.
At this point, I'd prefer just to be able to flash a custom rom for my phone, but honestly, if I can't do this I would be happy just to go back to where I was before this whole ordeal started... me with a functioning phone (albeit, full of useless bloatware). It would be horrible to admit defeat to AT&T, but I just want a working phone now
Any advice?
Thanks.
Bump.
Nobody? The post has gotten 59 views so far. I mean, I know it's not a hot new model S8, but can nobody point me in the right direction? I'd really appreciate it as this is the only phone I have, I like it despite all the bloatware it had, and I can't afford another. Or is it only worth throwing in the bottom of some drawer to collect dust?
Thanks.
111 views now and still no suggestions or advice. Seems there are loads of helpful people replying to other requests for help. I'm not sure what's different about this.
Read read read .... There is currently NO root method for the active this is stated over and over on this forum . You should be able to use Odin and flash a stock non rooted firmware ....again there are several posts and threads explaining this in detail ....good luck .... Do some searching and reading before making posts whining about no one helping you ....
I did read read read as you say. I did lots of searching, lots of reading, and tried lots of the suggestions (including flashing factory firmware with Odin) and nothing's worked. I also said in my original post that I'm not a phone enthusiast, I don't know anything about this stuff. I thought the point to the site was that there were advanced users and developers who wouldn't mind helping out the clueless. But no, everything I've read is quite cryptic in its terminology as to be basically opaque to most but it's spoke of in a way that's clearly meant for an audience with a similar knowledge base. I mean, I just wanted all the extra crap off my phone, I wasn't hoping to hack it into The Superphone, I got in over my head, and I realize I should have just left it alone. Don't open a watch unless your job is fixing watches. I understand that this is a site supported mostly by niche enthusiasts. Phones are your fun (which I don't get, but to each their own, mine is cameras and bicycles, so I understand having a passion other people don't get) but to most people phones are just something they have. If you're knowledgeable about this stuff, then I get why you might not understand why it's confusing to people like me.
In short, thanks for nothing.
P.S. - It IS rootable. I rooted mine. It is rooted right now. It's rootable using Dr.Phone. I mentioned this, so why don't you read? I could go on and on about the lame traits of users of niche interest sites (including photographers and cyclists, they can be so irritating) one being that of false authority... but why bother when I'll just receive another boring snide response (another lame trait of some enthusiasts which they seem to get no end of satisfaction from "Umm, there's this thing called the search function... duh".)
Lol enjoy your junk phone ...
Yeah, that's about what I expected. Thanks for proving my point. Enjoy your lame hobby.

Just take your time and read the instructions. Rooting it is very easy, just follow the directions. You'll be better off learning it instead of someone doing it for you the way you're wanting.

Do not feel bad about the jokes, but as jammol says, take your time, do searches, learn how to, if you do not have any idea about root and everything related, it is pointless to root, even dangerous for your device, even people that have rooted many devices before are somewhat reluctant to root their note 8, incluing me, if you want to root, then get the necesary knowledge first, and then have fun rooting your device, good luck
I have been trying to figure it out on my own. I am very good with computers and custom build computers etc. But the files are different from all the tutorials I have seen. The files I download after extracting them are different than the ones in all the tutorials. So I basically need help and need someone that knows rooting to help me. And whoever said there is no point in rooting if u don't know how to root is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You can get apps on the app store that requires root access also I can get custom ROMs etc. So anyone that is willing to help me root my note 8 please comment below. BTW I'm willing to pay 10-20 dollars for someone to help me get my phone rooted.
I did not tell you that you did not know what root is, I was only trying to encourage you to investigate and learn how to do it, so, do not say I am dumb, by the way,I am not the lost one here… anyway, good luck with that attitude
Slight contradiction?

I might be going OT here, but dude seriously. If you're good with computers, you'd have this figured out too (According and to quote you: "This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard")
I sincerely encourage you to really read and if not, read again and again to root it yourself. It's not that difficult.
If the files don't add up, try again and look where you probably went wrong.
We're here to help man, but at least try once more by yourself, for yourself. This time, cooled down and chill.
I don't see the point of rooting right now, the snapdragon model doesn't have any major roms worth switching to right now.. And I don't see why you would use anything else that needs root, simple things like adblock and such don't need root. Infact, I'm positive anything you want root for I could do without root.

LOL I am pretty decent with computers. Never used .Tar files. And have never rooted a phone. I just came from IOS to Android and am asking for someone to help guide me through rooting my phone. Is that too much to ask for? Im even offering 20 dollars to someone that does so. The reason i am asking for help is because in Obin when I click on AP to open the System files there is no .Tar file. And ive Extracted the file several times and downloaded the file over and over trying to get different results and even tried several different tutorials. So for everyone to tell me to just keep reading and educating myself on rooting is not what im asking for. Im not asking for Mentors. lol Im asking for someone to help me root my phone because i have having problems with the files etc. If the files were the same as the tutorials then i would of had my phone rooted 2 weeks ago. Ive been trying to figure this out for 2 weeks now and have found no solution. Now back to my post. If you are here to just write "Dude we are trying to help you but just do more research and figure it out on your own" then please dont write anything. Post the specific questions that are tripping you up in the root threads, and people can help you catchup. It's not as hard as it seems and if you're good at computers it shouldn't take long. Paying for root makes sense at first but is a recipe for disappointment in my opinion. Friendly suggestion

Yes, i might just proceed with doing that. The problem is I am leaving for work 2maro morning and don't have time to trial and error rooting my phone and I restored my phone to root it so I want to root it before i leave 2maro so i can download all my apps etc and don't have to restore again and lose everything again. That's why I just need someone to run me through it as I don't have much time.

Dude, your 20 bucks offer doesn't matter because that's irrelevant. Xda been about customizing and learning -yourself-.
I rooted my S4 back in the days in a few minutes, if you'd read a few CF-Auto-Root threads you'll understand how dead simple rooting CAN be and you'd understand Odin/ how to place files. I encourage you to read through one and just understand how the process worked back then.
Beware: You WILL NOT trip knox, but since it's a SYSTEM ROOT you CAN'T use Magisk. No systemless-root. Banking apps will/ can fail.
The main thread already contains very simple instructions. If those aren't comprehensive, not sure who can help you further. (Select V2.5 files if you're on the LATEST firmware /recently updated to December or January patch)

Second u need to do it yourself, which means reading, and reading and rereading that whole samfail thread, having all the files and backup files and being very prepared to get yourself out of trouble so you're not out of a phone for a couple days scrambling for help. and if someone helped you, you'll just be asking for help again when there's an update and you have to unroot update and root again. It's best to learn yourself and be prepared so you can get yourself out of a jam. I am a 11 yr xda member, and this is the first android phone in the last 8 yrs that I haven't rooted. Why well, not really a need to or want to root unless the bootloader gets unlocked to flash custom kernels and roms and get rid of the 80% charge limit. Which I believe is NOT going to happen ever with the n8. I for one am glad this root is a bit more difficult than the last 5+ yrs or so cause it separates the boys from the men with rooting. Too many lil brats brick a new device and run to insurance to save them cause they want to skip steps, not put in the time to be prepared for trouble and READ. One click root is Bull**** and shouldn't be allowed because simply too many people don't know what they are getting into...... Especially if they are coming from an iPhone?
I'm really not trying to sound like a ****. It's just that, I would never root someone else's phone and not be around that person. There is upkeep. I use to get my cousin's upgrades and give him my phone so I could upgrade every yr. Opposite yearly upgrade of me. I gave him a rooted/romed phone from the previous yr , but I would keep up with his and mine and do his rom and upgrade mods and troubleshoot it...? I like to push every phone to it's limit of what the chip can handle. Sometimes it was a lot, spending 5 hrs setting up a phone pushing the chip with overclocking, other mods, undervolting and having to wipe and redo everything over and over cause of bootloops. Not so much upkeep now though with the n8. If the bootloader gets unlocked, well awesome, and I'm down to flash away. But if it doesn't, oh well. I'm fine with the freezing apps, Samsung theme store plus other apk theme files floating around xda, poweramp with high res through aux, and using helium as a backup.
Anyways good luck and welcome to xda
Well said, rooting is something you must do by yourself
