[Q] verizon droid 2.2 tethering question - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

i just got a preowned droid this week from verizon. working fine so far. it has android 2.2 on it. in the settings is the option to tether. will i get charged for this? I read somewhere that i had to use a verizon tether app to be charged for it, this one is built into the os i assume.
thanks

well pdanet works just fine, so i guess we will never know. i thought it was odd that it came with 2.2 installed already from verizon and that the tethering wasnt patched out. not brave enough to root it yet, but eventually i will im sure.

Myself & several friends use PDAnet with great success!

Tethering

Which app are you all using for tethering? I can't seem to get the wireless one to work, the wired one looks good, but not sure if it works with the HERO. There are two in the market, one is pda net which ive used, but it breaks up every few minutes and there is easy tether, but I haven't used that.
I think all you need is Htc sync installed to use the wired tether. I use the wireless tether just fine, you just have to experiment on which one works best for you. Try the 1.5 wireless tether.. Provided your hero is rooted.
**edit**
Heres website
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
You need HTC Driver installed for wired tether, and you also need the 2.11 PRI from one of the Eris ROMs.
yes, im rooted running fresh toast. Should I still use the one for 1.5?
Unless someone else knows about an update, There is currently issue with wireless tether and fresh toast. Like the ability to enable the wireless tether but the phone will lock up when disabling.
didn't the eris PRI cause problems before?
Only with Sprint NFL and Nascar.
Just finished using Easy Tether and honestly its very easy and fast!
I've used and enjoyed Pdanet but now it "expired" and I can't access any secure sites (like email) and it's really annoying.
Never got Easy Tether to work
I have the "Wired Tether" by the same people who made "Wireless Tether for Root Users" and can't get either to work (running Fresh 2.1.2)
I'm pretty sure I have the HTC Sync drivers on my computer since my system detects it successfully as an adb android phone.
Idk what to do, I'd prefer to get the wired tether for root users to work but even if I could figure out the wireless problem that would be cool too.
I'm using the wifi tether from google on my rooted stock 1.5 android
anyone still have the pri udatezip
Wired tether for root users won't work for us because a special driver needs to be in the kernel I think (at least from what I gather from the faq). Wireless 1.60 works great on zen my touch slide rom overclocked by the way. Those on fresh toast who have problems, try 2.01, it's meant for g1 with a new kernel built from toasts, so ya never know.

Unrevoked & Wireless tethering Help

I tried doing a search, but couldn't get the answers I needed.
I was trying to do a quick install of Unrevoked on a (believe or not) Sprint employee's Hero. My girlfriend and I went to upgrade her Palm Pre to an Epic 4G. We got to talking and I showed him my hacked Evo with all the bells and whistles via "Fresh." All he was concerned about was getting was Swype and Tethering. Since I didnt really know the guy, I told him that I would bring in my laptop and hook him in the store with unrevoked rather than doing a full fledged root.
Well to make a short story long...
I downloaded unrevoked and what I thought to be the correct tethering app apk. He is running 2.1, and I believe its was update 1. When I ran unrevoked it said that it was rooted sucessfully, but when I tried running the tethering app it says that the phone requieres root. Leading me to believe that it didnt install correctly.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Even point me to a link or two. What should have been a simple task kept me at the store for about 45minutes trying to troubleshoot. Thanks...

Well that probably means their phone is at build number 2.27.651.6. When I ran unrevoked with that build number it said it was rooted but, it wasn't. Load the .5 RUU and then you can do the unrevoked.

[Q] Need help with wifi tethering

Hello ladies and gents. First off, I'd like to apologize for breaking any forum rules as I post this. This is my first post, and I'm a little frustrated.
As the thread topic reads, I'm having trouble getting my moto droid to tether, specifically to my wifi xoom. I have also tried to search for the network on my psp, and it didn't show up there, so I know its not my xoom. Besides that proof, I've successfully connected my xoom to several wifi networks.
I have, obviously, already rooted my droid. I have flashed several roms, including CM6 and CM7, bugless beast, currently running axiom sixty6. I have run sholes, and I have run chevy's kernels, include ULV/LV .8, 1, and 1.1
All of these roms and kernels are great, but I have yet to get my tethering apps to actually tether. I've tried both wireless tether app and barnacle app.
I would REALLY appreciate help at this point. Googling has yielded no results, yet there are several youtube videos showing the motorola droid tethering apps working. Even just letting me know what rom/kernel you're running with successful tethering would help me out.
Thanks in advance!

this is an easy one... you should notice you can tether with any pc /mac /other OS, but not with an iphone/ipad, or android devices. this is because the motorola droid is not capable of true AP mode (access point) wireless tethering, but rather the droid can only do what is called ad-hoc tether [at least to the best of my knowledge]. if you fired up a laptop in the same room, i bet you would see the wireless tether/barnacle wireless, but it would be an adhoc (peer to peer ) wireless network. Sorry.
******** EDIT: news, see my next post below for info how to tether with BT to the xoom! ****
experience: rooted my sister's moto droid. They were able to use the wifi to get internet on her mac computer, and not sure about a PSP but his sony PS3 could not access the motodroid wifi. I personally use an HTC Incredible which allows for AP mode tethering in the recent versions of wireless tether.
apparently there is a way!
i found this guide to setup xoom tethering to the droid via BT!

[Q] Cannot get working wireless tether

I've been trying many multiple things to get wireless tether to work. I currently have CM7 installed and have tried Wireless Tether for Root (versions 1.6, 2.0.7, and 3.1b2) and I've tried Barnacle Wifi Tether ver 0.6.7. In both apps, I can start tethering, but I can never see the phone from any other device (Win7, Evo 4G, iPod, Xoom). I also never see any data being transfered (up or down).
I swear I used to have tethering working on my Hero before, but I just cannot get anywhere with it. Does anyone have any suggestions I can try? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Make a Nandroid Backup!
Then Try Flashing a Different Rom, This way you can possibly determine if its the Rom, or whatever else that it may be!

Thanks for the suggestion. That's actually the last thing I tried before I posted my question. I tried the Toast Hero 2.4.0 ROM and that didn't make any difference. I still could not get anywhere with any wireless tether, couldn't see it, and it never reported any data transfer.
Any other suggestions?
Kushdeck ftw. I tether everyday. Great rom too.

Don't know if your Big on Sense Roms? But you could try my ExEnHeroC Rom... I'm Sure that Tether works, at least for Mostly everyone that I've spoke to! It should also work on the SenseFroyoV8.1 or V8.5 Roms too!
Also what Tether App are you using?
Good Luck!
Thanks everyone for the help. I think I figured out the issue. I think my issue is that the Hero can only do Ad-Hock connections. Am I correct in that? I was trying to connect to the Hero with another Android phone (HTC EVO) and a Xoom. It appears that neither of them support Ad-Hock connections.
Am I correct in all of this? Can the Hero support non-Ad-Hock connections?
hero only supports adhoc signals
Well, shoot. I thought for sure I tested it on a Win7 laptop and an iPad. I guess I didn't.
Does the bluetooth tether option work with the Hero? Thanks for all of your help with the WiFi option.
apple devices and windows will conect to it fine linux has issues.
I never had problems with Linux.
Oh, how I love my Evo 3D. Hotspot is so much better. Especially with 4G. I have my blue ray/ netflix player tethered to it to watch netflix.
"Damn you look even uglier in 3D"
im not sure about other linux distroes but on ubuntu at least it always just hangs on connecting then itll disconnect itself after five minutes or so. usb tether always worked fine though.
Have you tried PDAnet(Bluetooth&wired) ? If you don't want to switch ROM's just for tether. I've had it just over a year & am very happy with it especially after this last update.

Downloaded tethers not working

As some of you may know yesterday i went through he!! getting my Razr M rooted. I did it. The reason for the root was the built in tether on the Droid Razr M doen't work with my Droid tablets both running ICS. So I figured if I root and then get a tether from Google Play then it might work. Problem now is I've downloaded all of them seems like (accept FoxFi it sucks now because it makes you install a screen lock password that can never be removed.) I set these things up start the tether and no device can see them. My laptop, tablet destop all nothing. As if it weren't there. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong if anything. I've used wifi tether on my rooted Droid X and it worked great. Now not so much. There seems to be extra settings like select lan network. The choices are ip addresses. 192.168.1.0/24, 192.168.2.0/24, 192.168.3.0/24, 172.20.21.0/24, 172.20.22.0/24, 172.20.23.0/24, 10.10.1.0/24, 10.10.2.0/24, 10.10.3.0/24 what do they mean? Is this my roadblock? Frustraing as hell. Using 3rd party tethers for rooted devices has always been simple and effective. I used them on my Droid X because the built in version would drop out after 5-15 minutes and I'd have to turn it off and on to get it back. Now I just want to use my tablets. A USB tether would be fine with me if I could find one that worked on my tablet. I used to use PdaNet but it's bundled with FoxFi now. Suggestions?
