i have a family in usa and they come visit me in my country soon.
now,i can tell them to buy for me samsung captivate but im worry about 1 thing.
i heard that some of the samsung galaxy line coming with hardware lock [you cant accsses the download mode or recovery]
i saw that there are some methods but i also saw alot of people that said that this method bricked thier phone X:
so im not really sure if its good idea to buy this phone becuase if its locked im screwed becuase i cant ask for exchange or something.
should i buy this phone or not? [this is the best android phone that i found in my price range [500$] , this is why im intrested in this phone]
sorry for my english and thanks for help.
I have the 1008 model which is said to cause alot of problems getting into recovery and download mode. As long as you are careful you should be fine. It's still possible to get into these modes, and to date I have not had a problem.
If you want the phone don't let that hold you back. It's not something I worry about too much.
EDIT: It's still possible to get into these modes just not my normal means. And there is a fix in the forums to correct the problem, if you decide to.

under the battery there is a number above the sku. 1006 is has download. 1007 is hit or miss and 1008 has a problem. the phone can get recovery and download mode through adb reboot and some of the froyo roms in the dev section have download and recovery added to the context menu when you press power. then as a last resort for a phone without the button combo that is bricked there si a jig that you can build that forces download mode.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551&highlight=download+mode+jig
its a feature on the hardware, and has saved phones thought to be bricked
there is a fix in the development section but i think you lose the fix if you flash to jf6 unless you use the jf6 version with the fix integrated.
if you dont live in the states why not a GT i-9000? or if you want a contract phone for the reduced price why not a vibrant which has hsupa enabled?
i cant contract becuase i dont have this phone in my country.
btw, at&t are not selling only 1008 phones now or its randomal?
thanks
I got my phone replaced a short while ago, and I got back a 1009 model.
And it works just as it should.

It's your choice but I think you should keep in mind that there are problems with the phone like the random shutdowns some users have experienced (including me). I think it only occurs to some rooted devices but I am not sure. You don't want to be left in a position where you cannot return your phone. I stopped having random shutdowns and it's a great device for me but there are other android devices you can go for

can it be used to unbrick phones?
are you trying to advertize it?
well we got plenty of DEV people that might be interested in one
now that we got the 3 buttons fix, there are not that many chances to get a bricked phone anymore
There is no answer in your question. And the 3BR fix can still break your phone...
If it can unbrick, then there will be shops soon...
3-button fix doesn't work for all, mine has e-fused so im still stuck with the problem...

so you installed the new SPL fix to re-enable the 3 button, and it doesn't work for you?
most people that installed did the trick for them.
what happens when you do the 3 buttons combo, what do you see?
which phone model do you have?
So as the thread title state, i flashed with one click odin for captivate my i9000m unlocked phone. But i'm not (well i am definately) dumb enough to just do it out of the blue. It started when i updated my jh2 to jp6/jpm through kies registry hack. then rooted then oclf. Everything worked fine until i started moving apps to sd. I rebooted and i only had a bootloop... Got into download mode, flashed 1000 firmwares, tried every combination, etc. Finally found out that my /sdcard was corrupted and couldn't properly flash a firmware since the filesystem wasn't efs anymore. So i seen the odin one click for captivate with the big MASTER CLEAR, which i though (i damn myself for thinking so...) it may return my partition to rfs and that i could easily flash another firmware then...
So now i am stuck with a "bricked" bell i9000m with the at&t logo booting in loop and can't access recovery or download mode (think the flash may have remapped the buttons?) and when i plug usb it turns off.
So, here are my 2 questions,
1- is there a way (other than jtag, can't afford one and not really good at this stuff) to change at least the boot logo/bootloader or unbrick it?
2- Would there be a way to send it back to samsung (would obviously not accept it as it is...) any chance to physically format everything on the chip?
Please, ANY help would be greatly appreciated
THANK YOU VERY MUCH
PS: sorry if it is not in the good section
1. JTAG is your best shot, and you don't have to get one yourself. Coz some shops got RIFFBOX for JTAG and now it do support I9000. Rumors said you MAY get into download mode if you try 3 button mode many many times...
2. You can TRY giving it into a samsung service centre and hope they can repair it for you. They seems to have some other way to write a bootloader through USB even when the original bootloaders are dead.
For the JTAG, anyone around quebec city (or may ship in canada?) Also, is the 3 mode button would be the same or switched for recovery? (if we can actually get in download mode in such state).
Thanks
On the website of RIFFBOX, I can only find one in Toronto
I have no idea about the 3 button trick also, some say it is same as I9000 one and some say it is Captivate one (Vol up, Vol down and power)
I did the same stupid mistake and I have to send the phone back to samsung for a board change...
Does samsung really accept bell gt i9000m which only reboot with a at&t logo (i think it definately void your warranty)? :S
I had almost the same problem. Flash JM8 first with 502 pit and reparition, then do JM6 without reparition and 802 pit.

Can't get it to detect with pc, it just bootloop all the time...
So you can't get it into download mode for odin?
no, no download mode, if i plug usb, it just shutdown...
samsung itself accept it
and say it is out of warranty and will charge 500 bucks for it
i got the unit replaced with other reason though
but seems service centre and repair centre are two things and repair centre can do tue same trick, but you will have to ask samsung for the address
someone suggested in another thread that if you jump two pins of the usb connector with a 5k resistor, it would boot it into download mode...........but it was only suggested, and no one has confirmed it. probably dangerous, but if your phone is being sent in anyways, might as well?

Do you mean (i'm still on the warranty) that since the phone is bricked, THEY say it is out of warranty and make me pay (500$, the price i paid for the phone) to have it repaired, or did you meant that IF i was not on the warranty anymore (i still have receipt, etc), then they would charge me?
And if i want it repaired, i should probably contact repair service directly or service center?
Also, as for the resistor part, would you have the thread somewhere? (post or pm?) would maybe also check a howto since i am not quite the resistor guy...
Thank you very much
whom ever you talked to at the store, they were just being some arses
in Tonronto you got to most Bell stores they will fix it or send it to the repair center under warranty as long as you have the receipt, from Bell or bell partners stores
if you do not have a receipt you will need to talk to samsung canada and get them to tell you their local authorized NON Bell repair center, then you can go there and have it fixed
and they will definitely not charge you $500, average cost is anything from Free, to $45, to $75 or more depending on what they need to repair if any hardware part at all

Hi, thank you for your answer, i didn't contacted the store i bought it from yet (lasource/thesource). So you say i could only walk in with the box, bricked galaxy and the receipt and they would send it for repair? (even if they check and see it boot with the at&t logo?) and if they only ask what is the problem, what could i say? it only reboot or should i precise it reboot with a at&t logo? (and if they ask me how it happened? :S) Just want to know what i should say and not to avoid voiding my warranty. (also, i should avoid bell center but lasource/thesource which is only a reseller should be ok?)
Thank you very much

In my case
As there's no repair centre in Hong Kong, I have to go to samsung directly
And Samsung Hong Kong is famous for terrible after service
They say it is my own problem and will not try any way to reflash even there's a way to do it as the warranty doesn't cover this problem.
The only choice they give me is to pay about 500USD to change the board.
That's what likely happen if you send it to Samsung...you might get your warranty voided as well...
Well, guess i will send it to samsung directly... (anyone know if they will honor the warranty even if it boot only with a at&t logo?) also, could someone please send/share the link where someone put a resistor on the cable to supposedly go directly in download mode?
Thank you very much

Im trying this but I jus tget to the revovery screen, i chose `FormatInternal`
didnt work
and if i restart phone it actually goes to galaxy s logo then just goes black
Bricked my SGS with Captivate ROM too.
Any joy with this problem, sackofnoise?
Following a failed official Kies update to Froyo, I too (stupidly) used the one click flash Odin not realising that it would brick my phone. Like you, I can't get into download or recovery mode - tried every key combination you can think of. Also plugging in a USB lead shuts the phone down in about 2 seconds and also even prevents charging.
Taking it back or sending it to a service centre is not an option. It boots to an AT&T screen and even boots up to android - although it's no use like this, because it will not allow me to recharge the battery because of the USB problem.
Any ideas please. Flashed stock and custom ROMS to phones for years but never been stuck like this before.

Problem here is that there is no way to get into download mode. No combination of keys work - tried them all.
I bought this HD7 off of craigslist, i was checking it out and everything seemed fine, it was brand new.. no box or anything, just the phone..
until i go home and realize this phone is in demo mode!.
the phone is fully functional, except for the Windows live E-Mail. And the screen doesnt stay off, it turns on after a couple of minutes and goes to a demo screen showing off the phone.
Wtf! can someone help?.
this douche sold me a stolen demo phone, i called him and he said its bc the phone isnt released yet, and once it is, it should be fine.
Plug it into your Zune software and see if you can run updates on it or do a hard reset
Moved to general.
I tryed, it says there's no updates available. And there's a email stuck in the phone, [email protected]..
How do you hard reset?.
Hold both vol up and vol down and press the power button hard resets.
It lets me reset it, but it boots back up with dome fake contacts, emails, messages , and does the same thing.
It sounds like the software on the phone is purely for Demo.
What you would need to do is flash it with software that comes with a Normal HD7 and for now, I don't think that's possible.
Thats why I am very skeptical of deals on craigslist.
Why else would they have no box, charger or anything else a week after release?
Theft, demo unit, and/or scam...
How do i flash roms onto this phone?, sorry im new to windows, i came from a captivate..
Yeah craigslist sucks eggs, bunch of junkies on there lol. It just caught my eye, and i wanted it.
can you upload your tmoUS rom for me and explain how to flash it?!
i'd appreciate it alot..
THANKS!
I bought mine on ebay and I got a demo rom too. IM PISSED. I found a rom for tmobile specific but there are no instructions on how to flash these things. If they came with demo roms is it still the real deal?

Guys, RETURN your phone, demand your money back. Otherwise, you're out of luck. You got scammed.
There's no way to flash ROM's on these phones. Maybe in a month or two there *might* be a way to flash them, but WP7 may also never be flashable.
To flash a HD7 you need to stick it into boot loader mode ( turn the phone off, hold down the vol down button and at the same time turn it on.) Then connect it to the pc make sure you have the Zune software installed and windows should find the correct driver.
Try and flash the network rom I think the US is tmobile and the UK one is O2 you could try the HTC rom you may be lucky.
Yeah, go to the HD 7 rom development thread and there are original carrier roms. I believe those are the ONLY thing that will flash to your phone. I swear I read someone with the same problem (demo software) and that's how they fixed it. Good luck.
I've recently soft bricked my phone from an odin3 fail and have attempted every download mode button combo I could find after searching the forum for a couple days now...
The thing is I tried to run odin and upon rebooting the phone it wouldn't load anything past the 'world phone' screen or the battery screen when plugged in.
Tried everything: button combos for download mode, made a 300k jig (thinking about making a 301k jig), and more endless button combos to force a download mode.
I've just about given up and wish to exchange my phone for another one from wal-mart.
I've only had the phone for two weeks and am still within the 30-day return date.
**********************************************************
STRAIGHT TO THE POINT:
Will they accept my phone for an exchange even tho it's been rooted and the warranty has been 'voided'?
**********************************************************
Also I've attemped to unlock the phone (but didn't) cuz i couldn't get a hold of another carrier's sim card but i downloaded the app and got the unlock code for my phone which i'm still sure voided the warrenty anyway.
just another reason i think it would hinder my exchanging the phone w/o being charged $300 for a brand new captivate
You'll probably get a replacement phone right away since AT&T DSCs don't check for root when they issue a replacement. However, phones do get sent back to Samsung and I've read stores about people getting charged on their AT&T bill months later because their phone's warranty was voided due to root/ROM flashing.
I honestly think there's something wrong with your JIG. If you are seeing the World Phone screen, that's always been sign for me that a JIG could get a phone into DL mode. If you're using the instructions from that .99 cent JIG thread, I wouldn't be surprised if you aren't hitting pins 4&5 for the required length of time, or putting ~300kohm of resistance between the pins. At the very least, I'd recommend you get a MicroUSB plug head to chop up, and attach your resistors to.
if you have a 1008 model you can NOT boot into download mode with buttons! This same thing happened to me when i failed an odin flash and had to return the phone.
They said they never saw the error and gave me a new phone immediately.
1007 model can not be bricked since you can always boot into download mode.

This is something to watch for. If u r returning a phone after messing it up, atleast wipe any info that could inform u r messing. AT&T is courteous enough to give a replacement, but replacements do go to the phone company. And they may not be in a mood to honor 'warranty voided' phones.

I figured that would be the case.
Well i guess that means i'll be spending the next couple days(hopefully not) trying to jig my phone. shaky hands and poor pin visibility aren't usually a plus
Question about jigging
Do i need to take my battery out and put it back in every time i reattempt to jig my phone?

Or, you could go get a MicroUSB plug
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841512
You also don't need to remove battery every time you try to use the JIG. The phone just needs to be off.

Your phone's batch # is on a sticker UNDER the battery. You're looking for 4 digits, like 1006, 1007, 1008, 1010, 1012, etc.
*Update*
Well after hours of attempting to jig my captivate myself i'm calling it quits and ordering a usbMicro breakout board. I got the idea from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841512&page=2
hopefully once this gets in i'll have better luck.
Hi there!
I got me my third Galaxy and this time the three buttons combo doesn't work, so no download or recovery mode from me.
I plan always to stick to Kies updates from now on, but if I ever need to install a cooked ROM for some reason, or even do some special tweaking, I may need to have these modes enabled.
As much as I wanted to at first, I've refrained to apply the bootloader fixes since there's a small chance that they might not work and brick (again) the phone, and I can really cope with this problem all over again
So... what I did was to order one USB JIG from eBay 10 minutes ago. Now I'm wondering... which metod is "better"? The buttons combo or the JIG? If it's so easy to boot into download mode with the JIG (and I'd even think that more reliable since it's a hardware jumper rather than software), why would so many risk into flashing the bootloader when they could have got a nice, little USB cased JIG for 7 USD?
Also... when fully bricked (i.e., black screen) and the buttons combo doesn't work, would the hardware JIG work?
By the way, another reason to not flash the bootloader fix for me is that it would change my GT-I9000T startup screen for the international, GT-I9000 one , and I wanted it to be as stock as possible.
Thanks in advance guys; hope that you can shed some light into it.
EDIT: oh... is it true (confirmed) that phones with the combo disabled by Samsung boot a little faster than the others? I've read that since the combo is disabled, the bootloader doesn't wait for it, so it breezes through the startup process , but haven't seen this confirmed anywhere
Anyone??
mmm... I would like to know this as well.

Yeah, yours is the only post I've found about this in Google before starting my own.
I started this again because all the responses you got was "Good job!" from a guy
Hope we can more information this time...
So... ??? Please, somebody comment on this if possible; thanks guys
Hi!
Phones with the combo available are not any slower than their fellows without it. Mine came without the 3button-combo and flashed the fix to be able to get into recovery. I didn't see any difference.
But if you want to stay on the safe side.. the jig will do the job. Btw i just used the 301k ohm resistor with some clear tape and touched the right pins inside the microUSB socket. Tadaaa... cost me £0.48 How-to on youtube.
The jig doesn't work if your phone has a black screen. That means the bootloader is corrupted, no chance to flash it.
However if it's semi-bricked (you see a PC..!..Phone figure on the screen but no response nor boot) the jig (and only that!) can still help. Basically that's why i have it now
Thanks! I just received the JIGs I bought from eBay (after more than a month...!) and I'm happy with them.
I don't know why I'd risk flashing the 3 button fix when a simple jig is a "pure" and elegant solution, that doesn't mess around with my phone (and its boot screen! )
Thanks, and if you have any more thoughts on the matter, please let me know.
I have usb jig fantastic thing plug it in switch on phone download or plug in while on and hold power button till reset again download i will not three button again
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Thanks! Jig is winning so far!
Jig was developed for those phones that will not or cannot use the official method of accessing download mode .

I updated my bootloaders months ago so I could use the 3 buttons and haven't looked back since. I only had a vague idea of what I was doing (much lees that I do know) read all the guides and flashed and I'm glad I did it, now I can enter download and/or recovery on cue whenever I wish..
