I've been traveling for work lately and I'm frequently in areas where there is no AT&T 3G coverage. My phone will go to the EDGE network when it would be nice to have 3G. I've enabled the Data Roaming checkbox hoping this would fix it but it still stays on EDGE.
My question...Is there a way to force 3G roaming? In other words, make the phone search for 3G towers when its only getting EDGE...
Nevermind....I think I just found the answer.

A friend of mine just purchased the Kaiser to be used on the at&t network. He lives in a 3G area in the USA and for some reason, his phone will not hold the 3G connection. It wants to switch to Edge. Is there a manual setting to stop this from happening or a new utility to enable/disable certain connection. Is this normal for 3G to do this. Any information I can pass on would be greatful.
Thanks
I think it's an indication that 2G is stronger than 3G in your area. My Kaiser always hold 3G connection all the time where I live. You can "manually" force 3G. Here is one the many ways to do it: on Windows Start menu, go to "Setting" then "Phone" (on the "Personal" tab), click "Band" tab, then use "WCDMA" for network type selection (default is "Auto")
Thanks for the help. I'll pass it on.
While the Kaiser is my first ppc type phone and I cannot claim to be expert I do think that this is a normal reaction of the phone to what networks are available.
I live in San Jose Ca. and must, perchance, move up and down the peninsula in the normal course of work and life.
I see my Kaiser switching from Edge to 3G to unnamed all up and down the peninsula. It is best for 3G in the cities and worse up in the hills -as one might expect. I also get the best 3G connections in the evenings and night vs. the daytime when, I assume, more 3G users are taking up bandwidth.
It is unfortunate that where I live is an Edge (during the daytime) area though I am paying for the 3G data plan.
3G issues with the TyTnII
Hello all:
I post on the AT&T HTC forumn and had this thread sent to me by another poster there.
I also have a TyTnII newly aquired from MobilePlanet on Weds. I am having the same issues with 3G. It briefly flashed the G icon on boot up then switches to Edge with all 5 bars. I've tried the manual mode fix, no luck. The wcdma gets no signal and the gsm goes back up to 5 bars same as auto.
Then theres the inability to register my serial # on HTC's EU site. Says SN is invalid... MP has had several reports of EU devices doing this.
I'm in the US, NorthEast NJ area. And in the middle of a known 3G area.
Bill
Can anyone help Bill out? How many of you CAN use 3G on the USA at&t network without a problem? He's trying to see if it's a setting issue or a phone issue. I'm not in a 3G area so I can't help him here.
Thanks

I get a 3g signal when I go into Philly (I live about 45 minutes outside the city) It holds it just fine as well. Is it possible you just have weak 3g coverage where you are? I actually shut off the 3g on my phone as I have no 3g coverage at work or at home and the 3g connection discharges the battery in a hury.
I'm on AT&T as well.
Oh - BTW - I also can't register my phone with the eClub either. I sent an Email to the HTC Webmaster but have not had any reply in 3 days. I'm not too confident in HTC's support.
Before, indicator (G, E, 3G or H) show 3G and then phone make data call its shows H, but form today morning its stay H all the time
Any ideas?
p.s.
Im using new att rom 1.62
Chances are, your area has been upgraded to HSDPA coverage. My was a few months ago (NYC)

Thats correct. My icon is also on H now all time. (PHL)
Philly area
I live in this metro area myself. The H icon does mean HSDPA however you can set this off using Kaisertweak. Once you're phone resets it should go back to 3G icon. If you want to me more technical with switching bands, you can use the newer comm manager and advaned config to add a 3G on/off button for toggling between edge and 3G. Remember HSDPA is a faster form of 3G, the 3G icon just refers to the slower form of it which once was a default until the recent upgrade.
very wierd...i always have 3G turned off....so I'm always on EDGE...tonight i opened up the comm manager and turned 3G back on...now i have H at all times....
But! with the H or the 3G i get less signal strenght....on Edge i get full everywhere

EDGE data coverage is from the GSM side of the network.
The H is from the 3G side of the network. The technologies are different, and so is the coverage. The footprints are not exactly the same.
However, with 3G... you only need 1-2 bar to be able to place/receive phone calls. Voice quality should be reasonable.
Just an FYI.
oh...so what should i leave?
the EDGE or the H?
i dont have a data plan if that even matters
How do they fair up for battery life?
I hear that 3G uses less battery than EDGE does...is this true?
What about HSDPA?
Um, no you've got that backwards. Edge uses MUCH less battery than 3G and way less than HSDPA.
If you don't use data, stick with Edge.
but the H icon makes me feel special

PDX area just switched over to HSDPA a few days ago - I'm so happy!
To make things even better, then guy in the store dropped my plan down to $30 a month (no txt messages) which was unavailable when I first bought the phone! Sweet Deal!
I am having an intermittent problem with my phone going from 4G LTE data to no data at all. When it loses the 4G LTE connection it does not connect to 4G, 3G, or E. I lose all data connections. I can still make a phone call. The only way i can fix it is go away from all of the LTE towers shut off the phone. this is the only way i can get the phone to reset. any help would be appreciated.
I'm kind of having the same problem. When 3G signal drops it doesn't reconnect to another tower automatically. After I refresh it with OpenSignalMaps, it reconnects to another tower but now there is no data (i.e. no EDGE). Wonder this is a common problem with the phone?
EDIT: On further research it appears that there is a possibility that this is a FastDormancy issue. Does your network support FastDormancy?

Sorry not sure what that is. The network is ATT.
Hey guys
So I looked around the forum for an answer to this question and i found similar topics but not exactly what I was looking for. I have the HTC one with sprint and the only issue I have with it is how it handles its preferred networks. If have 2 bars of LTE but 4-5 bars of 3g its going to stay on 3g and not switch to LTE. Is there anyway to change how it gives each signal preference. Currently it will wait till there is no 3g signal before it switches to 2g but LTE is not giving the same preference. I know it's just this phone because I had the iphone 5 before this and when I was on campus at my university it would stick to the 1 bar of LTE i had rather than switching to 3g. If I force the phone in LTE only mode then it will pick the LTE signal but then I can't call and text obviously so it's not very useful.
There are two things that the iphone 5 did which I miss but otherwise love this phone. One is getting LTE in places that has low coverage and the other is roaming on verizon network on 3g. The iphone would always roam on 3g but the htc one only roams on 2g.
Is there a way to change those things with this phone? Thanks in advance!

Have you tried changing the preferred in the *#*#4636*#*# > Phone Information?
Hi thanks for the response. Yes I have messed around with that. That's how I got the LTE only option. It isn't a matter of not finding LTE signal. It's just the way the phone handles what is perferred. The phone first sees if there is a strong LTE signal and it catches that but the moment it goes to about 3 bars or less it will switch to 3g. I want it to continue sticking with LTE until the signal is gone completely like it does with 3g -> 2g.

If its that way then I belive a builder will be able to forge a flashable zip for that purpose.

I see. And who do I ask for that? Or how can I build one? Sorry I am a bit of a rookie in this. I don't want to mess around with it too much but can learn. I thought there might already be some sort of hack or a modded PRL.
any new insight on this by anyone? thanks
I have lte at my work if I do lte only but it will switch to 3g when i turn everything else one because 3g signal is stronger than lte. id rather use lte however but still have my texting and calling capabilities.

I know it's not an optimal solution, but have you considered using Google Voice integration in the meantime? With LTE only mode, so long as you're signed into an app of choice (Google Voice/Hangouts should be able to handle your calls and texts if you tweak at it a bit), you should have the desired service until you can get some dev help.
I have a sprint HTC one unlocked to run on T-mobile. I live in south west Washington, and I am having a very strange issue with my data. I select a data mode from the *#*#4636#*#* menu, and about half the time I connect to data. The other half of the time, it stays on UMTS, and no gsm logo pops up next to the signal. Other times, I will go to HSDPA, and have a very speedy data connection. Is there any way to disable UMTS? Could this be a rom issue, or a APN issue? I can almost always get an edge connection, but HSDPA is much better to use. I have done the R-UIM patch. I'll try to answer any questions, but I dont have tmobile service at my house, so I cant be sure

You can't "disable" UMTS. From my tests on this variant of the One, setting it to "GSM auto (PRL)" will get me on HSPA. It will keep me on HSPA until the network kicks me off. (Fast Dormancy, it puts you down to UMTS when you aren't actively using data to conserve energy.) [Maybe you can disable Fast Dormancy, who knows.]
