[Q] Can't get ATT Tilt to sync - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I've looked at any posts I could find regarding my problem and tried a few dozen things that were suggested and still can't get my Tilt to Sync. I downloaded ActiveSync 4.5 and got no results. Changed my USB settings, re-activated network connections and rebooted time after time with no results. ActiveSync does not detect my phone.
I'm using ATT Tilt with WM 6
CE OS 5.2.1622 build 18128.0.4.4
Rom Version 1.62.502.0
Radio version 1.27.14.09
I was going to update and/or try to flash the ROM (utter NEWB but want to learn), but not sure if I can do anything if unable to sync. Suggestions?
Thanks
S

And the biggest fix of them all is to try a new cable. When I used my tilt (I'm sure you read this while going through all of the posts) I went through at least 5 cables in a year and a half.

Thanks, I will definitely give that a try. I am now wondering if the mini USB jack is going bad on my phone. Maybe a new cable will help, but if not I'm guessing that would mean the need to replace the phone. I don't want to pay a repair bill on it.

You can flash through sdcard though. Dunno if you have a card reader or a donor device to format the sdcard and place the rom in there.

I bricked it :(

After about a week and a half of reading these posts and researching, I tried to downgrade from the official cingular 2.25 to 1.8 (cuz 2.25 seemed jankey)
I did the SIM unlock thru that mei service where you pay 38 bux ( im kinda freaked out right now and cant remember their name)
Then downloaded Cingular_RUU_1.8.11.1.WWE.ship.exe and it began to downgrade and where it started but at 16% came up with a "ERROR [262] UPDATE ERROR". there was a recovery option, followed that but it kept coming up with the same error. now at boot, it comes up to a screen where its red, green and blue.
Have I permentantly screwed my phone? Can someone lend a hand at trying to salvage it? Any help would be soooo totally appreciated. Judging by the rock in my stomach right now....im gonna hurl
ok apparently there is a difference in using the USB port on the front of the computer versus the ones on the back. Tried over and over again to install the above mentioned rom...same thing...at 16% it took a crap.
Downloaded the official cingular 2.25 rom and tried installing that over and over again. It also kept taking a dump at 56% each time. Last ditch effort, tried a USB port in the back of the computer and official rom 2.25 installed and everything is cool.
Not sure if anyone else will run into this problem, but just to be safe, use the back ports. And this will officially end my stab at screwing around with roms. A jankey phone is better than a paper weight. That was just too nerve racking. whew
by the way - anyone have a putty knife? i need to scrape out my undies...that was a pant ****ting moment
You must have missed the part where it said there is, or are, NO G4 bootloader modifications, especially in any older roms as yet.

G4 phone can't downgrade at all. 1.x Roms do not have G4 Bootloaders.
A few users have had problems when their IPL/SPL versions don't match. So there is the possibility that you will brick your phone.
Did you bother going into the OS on the phone at all after the downgrade to unlock? or did you just connect it to USB and run lokiwiz?

I never use the front USB ports, just to make sure everything goes okay.
But when I think of it, most of the times when I flash Roms I use my laptop that only has 4 USB ports on the left-side
Molski
which usb you plug into means nothing. it's only 1.1 anyways.
8125 is a junk anyways. I've had mine for one day & am already hot to return it because I found out Cingular will charge for data every time I access a wifi network.
If your phone is less than a year just get something else under warranty.
ok, I'll bite. How can Cingular charge for data on a WiFi network that they don't own?
To fix, simply make sure you put your phone in flight mode when accessing WiFi. The problem is that the GPRS network is still being accessed while WiFi is active. Its a bug btw and I've seen this in the AKU1.0 - 2.0 roms.

USB ports on the front of Desktops are, most of the time, setup on a USB hub. Where as the back ports are "directly" connected to the USB controler chip. While I have not seen it for the phone, when you do OS upgrades on IPAQ's they warn you not to connect through a USB hub. The same rule of thumb probably exsist with the phone OS's also. Just a little FYI for those who are interested.

Cingular does NOT charge for using the WiFi.
Help is on the way
Get your receipt and take it back to a Cingular Store it you got it within the last 30 days. If not call the 800 number for waranty suport. Tell them your phone just started to freeze up and you went to the Cingular site to download the update. Tell them the update went through and now it won't boot. They will send you a replacement. Keep in mind you may get an old version (VERY Benifical for customized roms) or a re-furb
I don't get the relationship between Cingular charging for data use and the 8125 being junk. One is a carrier's policy the other being the unit itself.

As I was purchasing my 8125 a cingular employee pulled out his 8125 and told me that Cingular does charge for any data transfer to the phone including wifi. I told him I would take my chances.

This is killing me. Its the send thread Tweker has posted this nonsense in. There is no way cingular would be able to charge you for Wifi. They can charge you for media net (GPRA), but not wifi. YOU ARENT USING THEIR NETWORK FOR WIFI.
There is NO difference between your computer's front and back USB ports. The all go to the SAME place on your motherboard. If you don't believe me open up your case and look for your self.
Your phone is not bricked. You just need to reflash the 2.25 rom on to it. There is nothing wrong with 2.25. I came from 1.8 and 2.25 is definately a step up. Trust me.

Sorry but your wrong. It's well documented that in particular Dell had a voltage problem with the front USB ports. I do agree with you that they're not "hubs" as per Itcatack but please be careful when you proclaim "facts" ...
Now I am pretty sure though that a under voltage problem probably didn't cause this error. There's many other factors here, not least of which are spyware, malware, etc. Mayhaps running a proggy during the upgrade.... who knows? (not me !)
Just my 3 cents worth... (you get more than 2 cents with me ...)

That is absolutely accurate, although this is my 2nd post, I have been reading posts here since March when I got my 8125. Tweker has made a strong argument that cingular reps have told him there is a charge for WIFI, and best I can figure, he is simply unable to understand the difference betweeen edge and localized WIFI internet.
Regarding the USB issue, there could be a problem if the controller isn't working correctly, or the physical port is damaged or dirty. Front ports tend to be more prone then the ones on the back to damage or dirt.
Man, if Cingular charges for WiFi access on the 8125, that means they've done a HORRIBLE job at trying to charge me as I use WiFi all the time both around the house and campus and not a single cent of that usage shows up on my bill.
Of course, I could just be the lucky one and got away with it somehow
they don't charge for wifi, that's the point.

no usb activity

First I want to say i really like this forum. It has al lot of info.
And I appoligize for my English, I'm from The Netherlands.
Now my question, ik recently(few days a go) bought a TytnII of a member of this forum (don't know his nick, doesn't matter) but when i came home I noticed that when I connected to my computer via USB, there was no activity at all.
I already tried to hard reset it to factory defaults, but with no luck.
Can any one help me out?
(I already tried to turn off the advanced at usb to pc connections, and also my active sync is okey because it does work for my qtek9100)
thanks very much.

When u plug it in, what does the led light(the one thet normaly blink green) do?
EDIT:there is a search function on this site. Try to look for "kaiser can not connect activesync" and try to read these threads.
This one looked similar, give it a try: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2204391

I really dont know what can cause this issue.
To find out about rom flashing, u better start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=369282
when you got your new devcie did you install activsync from the new disc that came with it or did you assume activsync is all the same( as an owner of a htc univwersal i know activsync 4.1 will not operate the tytn 2 you have to use activsync 4.5 also what usb lead are you using try using a lead from a different device, those leads come with pretty much everything i have 6 and i only remember the tytn 2 one being an important one as i use the internet sharing a lot

you said that youd reset to factory settings, so the rom will be as good as itl get in its origional form.
so answer what usb lead you using, is it the one that was in the box with the phone
and
did you install the newer version of activsync from the disc that came from the new phones box

i downloaded the newest active sync (4.5) didn't work.
But why does windows xp not react at all when i plug it in? it should at least see new hardware added wright?
With lead you mean the usb-cable? (sorry ain't that good at english)
i think it's the original one, but offcourse because i can't say for sure because i didn't buy it in a store but second hand. He did give me the reciet an the original box and everything so i guess it's also the original cable.
Also i tried 4 diffirent ones.
well im afraid it looks more like a pc issue than a phone issue what os you got on your pc and give me all your specs, and please tell your windows is genuine
U can also try different cable, just to be sure its not the cable that is causing these problems.
maybe they sold you a device with a messed up usb port? maybe 1 of the 3 middle pins of the top set of pins when the device is face up is damaged..thats what happened to mine and you couldnt tell by looking at it...

Okey so that is pssible, well I believe it's only 6 months old, so I'll go to the store with it.
@ jayjay8585 and Mikulec
I appriciate your effort for helping out, but if you've read the posts, you would have read that i have an other pda that does work, so not a OS problem(and yes it's a legit OS ) and that i've used several different cables
Is there a way to test if it's just a broken usb ?
Laptop Doesn't See Tilt
I've got the same issue. Got mine second hand only about 2 weeks ago. I was told it was unlocked but it was not. Got the unlock code from AT&T. When I plug the usb cord into the laptop it charges but the computer doesn't recognize new hardware. Any help would be appreciated and what I find out I'll pass on.

Mine probably has a mainboard roblem because an other firmware was put on, Icontacted HTC and it will be picked up for repairing
I sometimes have a simulair issue... with me it is because the USB connector plugs are slightly out of place (in the phone).
You can bend than back with a thin knife or someting. (dont put to much pressure)
I assume from reading the other posts, you DO have Activesync installed, and you did try a different USB cable?
If so, did you try another USB port on your computer?

Please read for this is no oridinary problem.....Unable to Activesync

I have AT&T 8925, live in United States, Run on a Dutty Rom and pretty much everything else is simple. No serious tweaking or reg hacks.
So Today, I go into work, plug in my PDA, and no sync. It is charging via the USB, but not syncing to Activesync. I need Activesync, it has all my contacts, appointments, etc etc. In the process of trying to troubleshoot this problem I have wiped my phone clean.
I have tried it all;
clearing storage on phone
deleting activesync off PC (4.5) and reinstalling, multiple times
Used Microsfts Troubleshooting guide
I have installed Activesync on three different PC's and all wont recognize the phone, as if its not there, but it does charge. I also have tried 3 different USB cords.
I don't know what to do, I even stumped the HTC troubleshooting tech guy. I also am screwed since if I send this phone back to AT&T under warranty to get a new one they will see the Dutty ROM and that will void my warranty. I would reinstall the original Windows/AT&T shipped Rom, but I cant get the Activesync up or don't know how to get a PC to recognize my PDA.
So.........I beg and plead, lend your advice for as long as this thread goes (hoping its in the right place) I will try your ideas, theories, and what nots.
IT seems like it would just be something so simple......is it? Where is my Data Connection.....
Thank you fellow XDA members for your time and assistance.

Do you get the "connecting" sound on the PC when you plug the device (same one you get when plugging any USB device)? If not I'd go for hardware fault on the phone's USB port... maybe one of the connector's solder points got ripped or whatever. That's if the port isn't fried altogether... Done anything special between the last time it worked and the first one it didn't?
This may be obvious...but did you restart your computer and hard reset your phone, then try? Im using vista and ive had no problems with any roms...so it just maybe a temporary problem.
Also test this while using the back USB ports, the front ports do not connect the same as the back ports do.
When my new Tilt's screen died an untimely death, I spent all day restoring all my goodies to the replacement Tilt. The next day, went to ActiveSync, and NOTHING! Charged, etc, but no connection. I did all the steps you tried and a few more.
Then, after wasting an entire evening, I found the solution!
Go to Connections>USB to PC, and uncheck 'Enable advanced network". Plug it and let 'er sync.

ahaha yea i thought graff had already checked the software so i didnt bother going into that
I suggest u try to search, there is a search option - type there something like "cannot conect to activesync" - there are milions of threads with this problem, unfortunately I dont know if there will be a solution for u. Just try that out and read.
This happened to me and I had to send my phone in to at&t. I know this probably wasn't what you wanted to hear. They sent me another phone and gave me 10 days from the day I received the new phone to send back the old. I also had the same rom as above I couldn't even flash it via sd card, so I sent it as was and haven't heard anything since. This was two months ago. The problem turned out to be with the mini usb port, it was warped like it got to hot or something. Maybe from using in car for gps I don't know. I hope this helps.
answers and bump
As for searching........always someone has to say it, "why dont you try the search option" - my friend, I am a google allstar and beleive in the forum searching till you can no more then post theory. Now saying that, I am willing to bet the answer to my problem is buried within a post in some thread with some fabric of the entire XDA forum. Finding it though can be harder than removing bubblegum from buckwheats hair.
So I have tried a hard reset for the PDA and the restarted my PC, several times.
...no go
I knew something was wrong when I lost the "ding" every time I hooked up the PDA via USB to my computer.
I had tried the unchecking the Enable Advanced Network before but did again and reset the phone with hopes of glory today. No glory.
I feel I have lost the phone and am ready to move on. Its just so friggen hard since it charges. How can it charge, and not stream data! I fried just the right parts of the mini USB? Blasted! So so so so disappointing because I felt I really had it nailed this time with the perfect radio, ROM, Dialer, programs, software, it all.....well maybe not radio, but my receptions suck all the time anyways and I live in Charlotte NC, a major US city with great AT&T coverage.
Now.....I am still open to any ideas and creative thoughts......but how do I get a the original WM6 Shipped ROM back on the phone? If I cant get any PC to recognize my PC via USB? I am calling in the warranty people today and not speaking of my Dutty, but having a new phone shipped. I just hope not to see a nasty bill come one month or two.

I have done the whole 10 days thing 6 times so far since the original purchase of my 8525 in August of 2007. Wasn't until the 5th time I complained and they offered me the 8925 as a replacement. The first five were all shipped back on time, with original ROM's and valid device malfunctions. Never have I been billed.....yet........

True, but forst I gotta get my mini back in the full size adapter then find a friend with a printer that accepts my scandisk so I can transfer the file over to it. Right now at work trying to save the file to the storage card via wifi. Shall be interesting to see if it works. Didnt on phone, said not enough mem.
Thanks for the suggestion, was so hooked on USB, forgot the other various aspects of the all great HTC.

Thats just some of it, it is more to it. I use xp anyways. You mention reinstalling active sync but have you tried .NET Framework Version 3.0 ? If the device charge via usb I would suspect its software issues on youre pc. Could be bad version of some of the software aswell, try download again making sure its the latest and so on. Good luck
Edit: Why dont you back everything up and reflash from microsd and then see if it will connect. Should solve it.

You are wise my friend. Thank you for the other software, I will try that. Funny thing about the PC, is I have tried three different PC's, all which it used to sync or try to sync with when I would just be charging. I would love to flash via SD card, but first I need the adapter for my computer, or track a friend down with a printer and correct slot. That might be done tonight. I am at work now trying to download the a rapidshare file of a shipped rom, free style, slow style, and prolly not going to work. But hey, its a learning experience.
Either way, my warranty is up in August, so I figure why not get one more nice new fresh 8925 before then. Ordered new one today, comes next week. I will still try and flash back to the shipped rom via SD tonight.
XDA and its members Rock, this is by far the most help I have ever received via my few threads.

Tilt Broken USB [Data]

My Tilt suddenly won't communicate over USB. It'll charge just fine (from both the wall charger and USB port on the computer).
This happens on two computers (XP & Vista) tested on 5 USB ports between the two and 3 different mini-USB cables (I know some devices used to be really picky about those).
Neither the phone nor Windows does anything to acknowledge they're connected. I've verified all the settings on both ends (ActiveSync USB connections are enabled, I've tried with USB advanced functionality both enabled and disabled, etc etc)
I've also hard-resetted. For what it's worth, I'm currently running L26 V9.
So ideally, is there some magical way to get my USB working?
If not...I need to get it in warranty returnable status. I can flash the original AT&T ROM using my microSD card, but I need some way of getting the original SPL back on there. Is there a way to JumpSPL using an SD card?
Any suggestions?

Sounds like the USB port is bad...no magical fixes.
You're lucky you are still under warranty.
Just flash the original ROM, don't worry about the SPL version, they won't check it.

I mean...it's just pretty obvious because when you put it in bootloader mode it pops up and says "HardSPL" blah blah
Do they really just not even look?
same thing happened to me
Just today... I have posted thinking it was a bent pin but maybe it could be an update or something?
I was also wondering whether you can un supercid and change spls from a sd card.
All tilts are still within a year, right ?

That's what I thought after reading the other USB port threads on the forum, but all my pins look okay.

I would say so, but I only found out it wasn't working because I went to ActiveSync in preparation for an upgrade to L26 V10. It had been syncing on L26 V9 with no problems until it randomly stopped. Also note that it doesn't work in the bootloader.

That's what I was hoping. However, for anyone else who finds this thread via search, I trudged through the entirety of the JumpSPL/HardSPL threads and there is currently no way to change SPLs without the use of USB on the Kaiser right now. It is apparently possible on the Hermes and older phones, which has caused some confusion.

Yup, they came out Sept/Oct 07. Guess I will go ahead and warranty exchange it.
one last thing...
Does anyone know if using the phone until the refurb comes is a good idea? They could easily see that it was used after you said it was broken. Also, I am assuming that to get a bad flash all you have to do is take your battery out while flashing. Can anyone confirm?

Active Sync Crapped Out

I just changed to a 1.56 rom everything was great. My device was perfect days. Then yesterday plugged in my device to sync my events and nothing. So of course I did the power off the computer, reset device, checked usb cable, reinstalled active sync 4.5 and still nothing. So then I tried it on my laptop and still nothing. Device will charge but no active sync. Already tried unchecking the box under usb connections for faster file transfer and still nothing. WTF. I cant even change roms because I cant establish connection with active sync. Anyone any ideas? I am using onkogs 5.1 lite 1.56 rom.
Try hard reset... and of course you can change the rom but only by flashing it from SD card. If you have original SPL then try to flash original .nbh files, if you have hardSPL you can flash anything you want. If hard reset, multiple softresets, and flashing back to original rom don't help then you might need to return your device for service. Unfortunately this happened to me and there was no way to establish any kind of usb connection.
Well I tried everything. It's official my T8285 is going in for repair. I know that they are going to give me crap since I am here in the US and have an Aussie touch HD. Wish me luck.

if the device will charge but not activesync then i don't believe its your device... did you make sure that the device IS NOT connecting in "disk-mode"? did you uninstall activesync and reinstall? did you try deleting the activesync drivers from device manager? did you try deleting your partnership in ActiveSync on your PC's and your phone and then recreate the partnership? did you try another ROM... did you try connecting to activesync via bluetooth? there's no way i'd be sending my device in for repair because activesync doesn't work...this has got to be a software/ROM issue...

Hey Coretz thanks for your ideas. I have tried everything you have said. It's weird because it charges fine. I have tried numerous usb cables and different computers. I have never had this sort of problem, it just stopped yesterday and that was it. I usually sync my device a couple of times a day since I dont have an exchange server at work. I am going to keep playing with it but am really stressed out about this. My calendar and contacts is my life.
Have you checked settings in Activesync? Go to connection settings and make sure 'Allow USB connections' is checked.
Also have you tried using pc's with different platforms i.e. XP or Vista. If your using Vista you may need to update drivers. Check cRaCKwHoRe's guide in my signature for instruction to update drivers.

you need to get PIMBackup (backs up contacts, calendar, mail) and you should consider using dashwire.com to save your contacts and text messages online. could be the perfect time to download Windows 7 RC and install to your PC...????
I've faced similar problem after upgrading my Rom to Davideuck 6.0, and it did happened before sometimes. My solution is sync with bluetooth to ur computer. I guess it is a vista problem since I can sync with another XP notebook.
Anton
You know whats weird is that it's not even with vista but xp. I was able to sync via bluetooth on my laptop now I just need to see if I can do it on my work pc. I noticed that now I can not see the windows folder. I use to be able to see the windows folder. I wonder if I can use like total commander or a more powerful explorer via bluetooth.

Have you tried going into Bootloader menu and seeing if USB is there at the bottom in the White panel? If it is, try flashing the rom again.

I had very similar problem. Active sync nor the usb mass storage worked. When connected to pc via usb the device just constantly charged no matter if it was set to charge or not to charge in power options. Unfortunately even flashing to orginal newest rom from htc site by using sd card did not help... and tryied many other thing but didn't help So my advice once again is to return it to service and nt to waste anymore time trying to revive this 'top' quality phone
Mate, i had EXACTLY the same problem. I flashed a new ROM a few weeks back and got exactly the same thing, charges through USB but no connection other than that, i have tried everything and nothing fixed it, new leads, different PC, flashed new ROMs from SD card, all to no avail!!
Ive just learnt to deal with it as i cant be arsed to return it for repairs with a non official ROM and a non official SPL on it.............

Yeah it's crazy. I have owned dozens of htc devices and never had this problem. Usually I could find a fix but this time I truly have done "everything" that I know and nothing. I am going to try and deal with htc here in my home town of Houston, TX but I know they are going to give me crap since I have an Aussie T8285 HD. ****ing retarded that a $1,000 phone cant sync, ahhhhhhhh. Sorry I feel a little better now.
Well good luck with it mate, hope they will fix it for you. Scouring through forums i found another person with exactly the same problem (flashed ROM then no USB connection except charging). He returned it to HTC and they said it was a mainboard fault!! Dont see how flashing a ROM can cause a mainboard fault but thats what they said!
Im gonna flash an original ROM to mine (SD card) and hope that HTC UK will repair it with non-official SPL on it!!!
Good Luck dude!!!

Dude that's ironic. I just went to the HTC facility here in Houston during my lunch and spoke to a csr rep. She was cool and started everything to do the repair under warranty. Then she came back with an engineer and he said that it was out of warranty because it had a cooked rom. I told him that I had the problem before I put the cooked rom on the device. He was kind of a **** at first but then I begged him a little and he was cool. He told me to put the original rom back on it if I could then bring it in tomorrow. He said that different roms have different power settings and it probably blew out the motherboard. **** now I have to figure out how to flash via my sd card and not with RUU.

so, if you can get it to bootloader mode can't you can flash the stock ROM and SPL? i've been using & flashing HTC devices for 3+ years and never once had an issue like this... i'll be interested to hear the ROM cooks' opinions on power settings by ROM. as long as its charging, i'd probably forgo servicing, get me an exchange account, sync OTA or via bluetooth. hope it works out for you.
oh yeah: what's the address of that repair center in case i need it one day??!?

My stupid company does not have an exchange server which I think is gay since it's a major research university. Yeah the engineer was a real young guy and he seemed very knowledgeable. He was explaining to me that the cooked roms have spikes in power which can cause the motherboard to get fried. It took me forever to find this place. Technically they are not a repair facility but they have onsite engineers and since they are local I use them.

thanks for the info... regarding exchange server, you don't have to use your company's server. for example, i use 1&1's hosted exchange server ($7/mth) and have my primary email forwarded to their server. my primary is aliased so that when i respond to email, it looks as if the mail is coming from my email account. there's also Seven Beta; if your company uses OWA (outlook over the web) Seven will sync email, contacts and calendar. my point is that there are options besides ActiveSync... keep them in mind for situations like this... good luck!

Really I have office 2007 on my primary machine at work. What I really need is for my machine at work (calendar, contacts, tasks, notes) to be synced on my phone at all times. My outlook is my life.
Tasks
Has anyone managed to get Tasks to sync from an Exchange Server?
I use tasks a lot but it never seems to grab them not matter which rom I use.
