Ok, so I have searched and searched... Watched Youtube, etc and I can't get definitive answers or instructions on installing roms, radios, etc. on my Google Ion Dev phone. I bought the phone to be different from the Mytouch crowd, but that seems to have been a bad move on my part so far.
I would like someone to either link me to or walk me through installing a rom for my phone. I would really like the Donut 1.6 version with all the bells and whistles like tethering and MT. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks
Do you even look a little bit at the stickies??????

As much as people claim to search and search and read and read you would think they would read somewhere that posts are supposed to be put in appropriate forums.
follow the links in my signature. root, flash, flash, flash, wipe, wipe, wipe, report, report, report.

The Ion is not a Dream device, but based on the Sapphire. Please post in the appropriate forum.

this is why XDA has strict rules about posting on their site, if you don't like it ,then don't be a part of the community. Go back to the experts over at the tmobile forums, you can posts any thing any time, anywhere. You guys should feel at home there. .
I prefer to go the "this is where you should post but I'll help you still" route. At least if I can help. Simply telling someone they posted in the wrong place when they're new is no help at all. Yes there are a lot of posts in the wrong section but you don't have to be so anal about it. I didn't know the Ion was a Sapphire device, I didn't know what it was really and my only experience with the Ion is via Soulife's ROM which is stupidly fast. In conclusion, I am great.
Anal you say, ,,
In the Q&A section alone 2522 + threads have been opened . Could you imagine what the development section would've looked like without the Q&A section. .
I think the mods are doing a great job, and members that flame rule breakers, don't stop, burn them to a crisp. .
I don't mean they do things too harshly but that they could at least offer help while telling someone they're posting in the wrong place. I'd hate to be a moderator because it's a thankless job that isn't easy. Please don't misunderstand what I meant

In the device listings in the top page of the XDA forums there are images of each device next to its associated forums; just looking at the front page would tell you that the Ion is not a Dream device, but a Sapphire device.
Also, the reason there are different forums for the two devices is because their hardware and software are different. The Sapphire uses a different SPL and method for flashing ROMs. Asking questions in the Dream forum about the Sapphire board is like going into a hardware store and asking for help with your VCR—keeping the posts in the relevant location is beneficial to everyone involved.

lmao good you read my thread... but the reason why i put that was i saw drizzy and cy's thread alot of things on there were b/s so i put my thread up and i wanted it too look decent lol but yeah good job!... you just are still a "MLIG" haha
Thank you all for the help/defense. I didnt realize that I posted in the wrong section. I was up all night/morning trying to figure this all out on my own. When I say I tried searching, I did. When you search Google Ion, you get 10,000+ hits with the mention of "Google" or 10,000+ with any word with "ion" ala "application, etc. If I post something, that means I am really at a loss. You can see that I have been a member for a lil while, but only have a few posts.
I was finally able to do it via trial and error. I didn't make a image of the current Ion rom so that went out the window. The Google Ion aka Magic (developer's phone) is already rooted (I figured this out on my own). Power + Home will access that area just like the other Magics that are rooted. I put the rom on a seperate sd card without partitions etc. Just a straight drag and drop and rename to "update." When everything finished I then reinstalled my original sd card that had all my apps on it. So far the phone runs fine, it still has that typical android jerkiness at times, but I think that its just the memory constraints of the phone. I loaded the Donut version that has the expansion pack for tethering, etc.
Maybe my post can be moved so that it might help someone else that just needed a simple question about this phone answered.
PS:Since I just did a simple drag and drop will I run into problems later? What's the purpose of partitioning?
I am new to xda, and smartphones for that matter. I got an android Eris in may. It came with 2.1, and I love the phomex but I know I can get more out of it. I would like to root, and run evil Eris 3 or 4. Can someone a little more knowledgeable help me with this, or advise me on my best options as to making ky phone work better for me? Any and all help will he greatly appreciated.
There is an Eris section of the forum, ask there instead...
And make sure you post in the General Discussion instead of the apps/games section.
Wow! Talking about wrong section. LOL!
I think that it's safe to close this.
EDIT: 09/09/2010
The Wiki is comming along nicely, a thank you is in order to everyone who contributed. Of course it can always be improved, as such I am keeping the original post below. While we still don't have a great following for the DX on XDA we at least have a nice and organized page in which you can find links to the major breakthroughs and how-to's. If you are new to the DX and are looking for a place to begin, thanks to the fine people on this forum the XDA Droid X WIKI (Found Here) is a great place to begin
As new things are discovered for the Droid X we encourage you to add them to the Droid X WIKI, it can always be removed later if need be. It is a great start however. Thank You all, and good work.
From Sleuth255: Just a quick (slightly off topic) note to also say that XDA mods are here to help. The basis of XDA-developers is after all, development, and it is within device specific development forums such as this that all the magic happens. So here is my promise to all Droid X/Android XDA developers using the facilities of this forum: If you need help keeping a development thread "on topic", PM me and I'll place XDA's cosmic moderating powers at your disposal. Obviously, there's give and take here; we're a community based on idea sharing after all, but the point remains: Let's work together to make the Dx something truly amazing.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have more reading to do so I can further acquire "mad Dx/Android skills" without having to resort to noob tactics.
Original Post:
So I have just come from my Droid Incredible... Yesterday as a matter of fact... And could not help but notice the complete lack of organization of all significant breakthroughs for the Droid X. As well as a lack of anything at all in the WIKI.
It actual made me miss the XDA Droid Incredible forum, which was a joke in comparison to the XDA Droid (original) forum... Point being it doesn't say a lot for our Droid X Forum...
SO! I figured I would put out a request to get this forum a bit more organized, even if that means doing so through the XDA Droid X wiki. At least here we can place links to the most significant breakthroughs, etc. I will start working on it myself as soon as I locate some of the more important breakthroughs, such as root, bootloader, Froyo upgrade and downgrade, and any others.
Find the Droid X WIKI Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=File:Motorola_Droid_X.png
I invite everyone to help, after all not everyone was reading the forum from the start, and just for kicks some time, try searching "root" on any of these forums, you might as well just start scrolling through the pages without searching, because you'll get about the same number of results...
EDIT: So I have decided it is not the lack of effort for this forum as much as the number of occupants. Even the Droid Incredible Development forum (which is considered to be a phone lacking development backing) is being viewed by around 200 people at the moment of writing this. Ours (DX Development) currently only has 20 occupants... I have yet to see a phone in which XDA was not the main forum used for communication, perhaps this is the first?...

You are correct.. I am sad as well coming from the HTC touch where the XDA following was huge...
There isn't so much love for the X here on XDA and you are not alone in hoping it changes!
I'll help out when I get back in town tonight. This place is not user friendly.

BUMP!!!
This thread needs to be stickied!!!
Yeah I agree... Seems like a popular enough phone, apparently not with the devs though. So, I have decided to go ahead and start building my own rom. My first theme is almost done too...

I agree, with everyone who has posted so far. I'm bummed that there aren't people flooding these X forums... I'm not great at development or anything, but have done a decent amount of information compiling for the Wiki at the server lab I manage, and would be willing to help contribute in any way I can!
Agreed.
I usually lurk around in XDA, but it is the first place I check out DX info.
I'll help with whatever I can.
NOOB would love to help
Although I am not new to XDA forums, ( I owe my sanity to you guys for getting me through some of the hairy spots in the WinMo days), I am totally new to Android. I started with the HTC Aria, then got tired of AT&T's BS, so I went to Verizon (where I now have 3G in my home!!). I started there with the Droid 2 but I wanted a better screen and the extra memory so I just picked up my Droid X (after waiting 3 weeks) today. I'm excited, but I know that there are deficiencies - such as no update yet for the DX.
I don't know what I can do to help, but I've always learned that the best way to get acquainted with something is to sometimes just dive in with both feet. I'm just a lowly System Admin Manager for an IT company. DROID X excites me and we truly do need to bring in whatever is needed to get our membership to a level that's worthy of Moto's 'flagship' phone.
Just let me know what I can do to help and I'm there - as I said, I owe you guys big time.
Maraming salamat (many thanks),
Miguel
Now that this is stickied... you should change the title and first post to something along the lines of: "Look Here First" "New to the Droid X" "Noob ALERT!!"
Lol, ok.. maybe not the last one but something similar. Then edit the first post to something explaining the wiki or just the link.
It will help out on confusion in the threads and open ppl eyes to things that are going on and getting lost in the shuffle.
The biggest issue I have seen, is that XDA is an HTC forum, and the Devs dont mess with the Motorolla devices. Other forums have devs that work on the DX and that is where the traffic is. P3Droid, Koush and Birdman have completed the most significant breakthroughs, and they are not a part of this forum. I wish this place had more of a DX following too...for now, I stick with MDW.
Well I just recieved my DX yesterday. Thanks to this great wiki and the people behind it, I was able to root and do some modifying with in the first hour of having my phone, and I didn't have to tear through the forums. Thanks for all of the effort and keep up the good work.

I like MDW alot as well, man, but I DO notice that a good number of posts there will link back to something here in the DX forum on XDA. So, it seems that the higher ups at MDW do at least lurk or contribute here as well.

after 2 months, I still want to keep my 2.1 OS (in case I want to start some coding on it & 2.1 is a safe version to test on). But I will definitely upgrade to official 2.2 OTA.
btw, is there a list of reasons in the wiki to root & upgrade to 2.2?

Welcome aboard. Just make sure you read everything you can before asking a question. I usually ask Google first before I post in a thread. You can also use the hand search feature at the top of the forum.
I say this cause ppl can get pretty heated for threads started asking questions or posting information that has already been answered or giving.
You can always pm me or hit me up on gtalk. A lot of ppl do and I enjoy turning the light bulb on for ppl lol
I've been lurking since I got my new phone, glad to be here. I'm rooted on 2.2 OTA and have learned some about the signed boot loader and latest updates via lurking and searching different forums each day. The wiki looks very complete as far as I can tell, great job!
Thanks for all the work on the Wiki. Great stuff!
I'm coming up to speed on Android/DX now. Very cool platform. I'll be helping more/developing for the Dx soon.
I may not post here much but I try to pay attention and read as often as I can.

I'm pretty much new to the cm6 software. I know about the wifi tethering and the live wall paper, and the some wat speed but thats basically it... Is there anything else u can do with cm6???? As far as customization, added extras? good tips? or anything useful period...i havent made any changes to the rom yet...

Guys, can we stop with the personal attacks.
Regarding this, the OP may wish to consider the use of Q&A next time, as this forum is for development.
Additionally, a read of the "XDA mantra" at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2031989&postcount=45 will explain a little about how xda started, and what is expected before posting.
As for the forum rules, please read them and stop with the childish insults and name calling.

Thread cleaned a bit.
First i would like to say that doing a search in the main HTC HERO CDMA forum which can be found on the top right of the page will help you out tremendously.
As for kernels, Here is a link to all the kernels that Decad3nce has done. You can read through and test them out.
A lot of people are using the #14 kernel which can be downloaded at this link
CM6 #14 kernel
As for customizing, either go to the themes and development forums and you will find themes and themed ROM's. There is also some tweaks you can do in settings>Cyanogenmod Settings. It's more of trying out different things. What I do to my phone is my preference. Make it your own. Trial and Error..

Actually, it's more "us nerdy people" don't like being insulted, and it's irritating to see someone say "oh, I'm not going to read through that because I'm lazy and it's easier if I just ask my question instead".
Yea i understand what your saying but I wasn't tryin to be lazy..i did alot of research and i knew alot about how it worked and operated and the cool features..not the neccesary steps. i have a alltel hero and i was doing the sprint way but quickly notice it wasnt working so i googled alltel hero came to this site and the alltel rom root was still in the works. However I still did research, also tried the forums way it was a tad misleading..so soon after i found a site with 8 simple steps that answered all my questions. So to say jus read is not helping as much being point in the right direction..So I greatly appreciate the people above who helped and pointed me in the right direction. And those with unneccsary side comments, just don't post..It's simple..

Nikos, when you read this you need to make sure you actually pay attention properly.
First of all, putting "please don't report me" in the OP of your thread is a definite way to get yourself reported. Especially considering all the threads you've made in this section have been pointless and I'm surprised you haven't been warned about it yet, apart from your one warning from iridaki.
Now, you may be thinking what is wrong with the threads you've been making. Well I have absolutely no problem telling you what's wrong with them.
You had one thread which was against XDA rules because you mentioned how to get a paid game for free. That is definitely a big no-no on this site. You don't need to tell people how to do it because if they want to know, they find out anyway. We can't stop that but we can stop people like you from telling them how to do it.
Other threads you've made are also pointless and clearly show you breaking the rules because a quick search would've told you your answers. Searching is also one of the rules of this site and by you not searching for you answers, you are directly breaking the rules.
Another thing that's wrong with your threads is your attitude. Other members of this forum kindly tell you that you should search for your answers and you've been rude to those trying to help you out.
Due to the fact you're flaming them, that's a third forum rule you've broken.
Now let's look at this current thread. Even though searching for this answer may help, it's not likely. That doesn't mean that you should create a thread about it though. If you want to know what's better then test it out for yourself. That way, you'll know right away which is better and you won't even need to wait for someone to be online just to tell you to search.
It's exactly the same reason why threads asking "Which ROM is best?" aren't allowed either. They either end up in an argument or you get told that you should've tried it yourself.
Now for some advice...
Because of the fact that you've made so many useless threads, if you do have a question and you actually have searched, people won't help you because you always expect others to do the work for you.
This is a developer site. NOT a support site.
All of XDAs members will only help someone if that person has tried to help themselves.
If you have searched, tell us what you've searched and what you found. If you've tried fixing a problem, tell us what you've tried and what happened.
We will not help out anyone who expects it all to be done for them.
Now a final warning from me...
If you create another thread and it's clear that you haven't searched for the answer yourself, I will report you myself and do my best to make sure you get banned from this site.
This is the last time I'll tell you so please make sure you paid attention to what I said in this post.
Have a nice day
JUST DO IT! You can try it by yourself! There is nothing to be scared (except unlocking bootloader) set it to 48 and wait 1day..if u got better performance..good then!
You dot have searches it! But there is Lucastian96 who made ALL guides..next time when you want something search his post's before posting!
You can say to me "piff i dont want to talk to you", fine then! Nobody is going to help you!
I have always tried to help new user's..but you..you're making too many usless threads!! When newbies is going to search something they are going to find you'r questions..

I honestly don't get why is it so hard to test it when you have the device at hand I mean, if devs on XDA can achieve root and make roms for phones which they don't even have, I don't see why you couldn't conduct a simple experiment using your own phone. Anyway, that's enough rambling from me. I know none of the things KC or me say will stick in that mind of yours so we're basically wasting our time. Plus, I don't take pleasure knowing that newer members will be 10 times worse than the previous bloke who joined. So, long story short, reported.

Your phone wont get unstable as i know. But boot time will get little longer than former. Increasing vm size will eat your battery. But the performance will be increased. Also, do this only if u want gaming. If u want to keep the battery longer set it to 32.
