[Q] Why does my SGS take so long to load up homescreen? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there people. Here's my problem, when I have apps running, like internet, angry bird, etc, and click home button to return to homescreen, what's left is the wallpaper. It takes about 5 seconds to load up, and takes another 5 seconds to respond to scrolling. It gets annoying when I multitask.
I realise it's more laggy after opening apps like asphalt, hungry shark and especially angry bird, and playing movies. But after it's loaded, it's fine.
What can I do? I am currently on Doc's v7.6 XWJPA rom (startup tweaks disabled) with zenkinz's OC kernel and JFS/EXT4 file system. I have autokiller enabled at strict. I tried EXT4, EXT2 but I don't think it's the file system. I think it has something to do with media scanning perhaps?
Thanks for troubleshooting/advice. Really appreciate it if this can be solved.

No replies? my problem is very similar to this guy,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=689728.
And I've done pretty much did what he did too, factory reset, reflash rom, changed kernel, still nothing.
I realise that I don't get the load home screen when I for example,
Angry Bird > Press Back > Exit Game > Home screen pops up immediately usable.
But if I
Angry Bird > Press Home key > Home screen takes 10 seconds to load up and then become scrollable.
What can be done? Really need help guys.
Bump up my thread.

Bump up my post. Really need help.

It's because of your autokiller. Don't believe me? Uninstall it then see what happens. Don't use auto killers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, wow, chill mate. Okay okay. I'll try that and get back to you.

Hehe good luck. You're right, I do need to chill, point taken

Hi, done that and tested for a while. Still restarts home screen when I press home button. Not solved. I wonder if I am the only one having this issue?

You are not alone. I have the same issues, and I have never had any auto killer installed. The problem occurred after the upgrade to Froyo(stock). Any help would be appreciated.

Well time to put my foot in my mouth. My thinking was that the auto killer was removing the launcher from memory. Thus every time you pressed home, the launcher had to start again from scratch.
Sorry, wish I could be of more help :/

No worries Chalup, thanks anyway.
Yeah, since Froyo I've been getting that. I hope this can be solved.

Hey iamsatan, I think I found the "cure." Do you have quickdesk pro installed? I uninstalled it and now it's working fine. Maybe partly because I flashed a new modem. I flashed JPD modem instead of JPP.
Still testing.

I have the same problem after upgrading to Froyo there is occasionaly very long wait when returning to home screen.
When this is happening also applications are reloading, it looks that the launcher crashes or it is killed.
Any solution?

Home crash or out of memory

I am having a big problem...every time I use an app, when I press the home button the Home requires 5 seconds to load, like it was closed before...
There is a way to know if my Home crashes or Android closes it because the Ram has finished?!
It is almost unusable that way...

Is your sig up to date? Maybe you should update the firmware on it. Load 3.6.8.1 or even 3.9.9.1 (as it may be the next stable release from cyan)
You should use compcache and/or a swap partition as it does seem that android is killing vital apps for memory

I am on the 3.9.8 right now (9installed yesterday) but I'll try the latest tomorrow hoping this problem will go away because my G1 is unusable this way...I press the home button 200 times a day! I am wasting 5*200=1000 second of my time per day....Anyway how can I know if the home crashes or it is closed by Android? This can be useful also in the future.

If you update to 3.9.9.1, cyan took out the advanced launcher, so it should work much better for you

Transition to Landscape takes TOO long!

I would really appreciate some help. I just received my Sprint HTC CDMA Hero and when I flip it to landscape it literally takes 3-4 seconds to transition. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to remedy the problem? It is NOT rooted. Thank you for your help...
This is a very normal transition time... I'm running DarchDroid ant it takes at least three seconds to transition.
Root. And you can fix that.
I run zenxp overclocked, and it takes less than half that time. Don't think it can ever be instantaneous, though.
Running Aloysius 2.1 and it takes maybe 2 seconds at most.
Here's a tip. Download an app called Bubble by Ben Zibble from the market. Set it on a level surface on it's back and hit menu> calibrate. Then set the phone on it's side and hit calibrate again, then position it upright and calibrate it a third time. Your rotation will now be much faster.

That would calibrate the sensor for the app. Not the whole phone. Its just telling the bubbles, when the phone is like this, make the bubble go here. Not if the bubble is here, set the internal phone sensor to think its here.
Mine was slow as Christmas until I rooted and loaded a custom ROM.
If you don't want to do that then at least get the auto task killer from the market (free) and set it to help you. Also, if you are running stock 2.1 I'd disable your stock SMS app and use Handcent SMS. Turn off your GPS and turn off your Vibrate when typing. What tends to happen is that your phone will be doing A LOT in the background and it lags like your CPU would if you were running 10 programs at once. That is what the auto killer does, it kills stuff and keeps your phone running fast.
But I really recommend rooting and installing a custom ROM. I am not a developer, know little to nothing about linux, and I figured it out with the help of this forum. Everything you want to do has a step by step listed here. It is a great resource and you won't belive how much better your HERO will be with the custom ROMS.
I took mine to the Sprint store and ran it side by side with the Evo and honestly there isn't much the EVO can do that my Hero can't.

One would think that, but it actually reduces the wait time to transition from portrait to landscape. It was discussed in a previous thread a while ago.

[Q] ADW Launcher 1.0.1 - Settings

Where the hell is my Home button. Running Htcclays Superfly 2.2. Can not get my home button to work. ADW settings-System Preferences-Home button binding- various options come up. No matter which I try I can't get it working. I also looked in CyanogenMod settings for an option, none that I could see.
This happened once before, with the same Rom, between flashes, and magically started working after awhile and a few reboots. Tried rebooting a few times, checked various setting, checked/un-checked stuff, nothing. None of settings have any effect.
It is a pain in my ass using the back button.
Anyone know if this is an issue with the launcher or the Rom ?
Have the same problem when using dxtop also, so I'm guessing it's the rom.
Was using dxtop but had issues with home screen reloading.
Help, suggestions ?
Thanks,
I don't know exactly what the problem is. But I can tell you one thing. If one of these devs that work so hard to throw out a nice rom saw you putting dxtop or openhome or anything of the sort on top of there nice rom. They would probably kick you in your jaw. Try doing a nand restore or wipe and reflash. And leave dxtop in the market!!!!! Tell me how it goes...... can you even get into recovery or no?
Hope this helped a bit

I'm not sure what causes is it, but I've experienced it on multiple roms (CM5 and SuperD to name a few). If you wipe and reflash it should be fine.
Yeah, I wiped and re-flashed, got my home button back, but lost my end key-blank screen. Weird. Oh well, I'll live with that. Strictly using ADW, which came with the rom, only tried dxtop since I already paid/had it. Nice to know it's not just me.
This is a killa rom, 44MB internal left (89MB) w/108 apps. Had 234 on it @ 1 time but it really slowed things waiting for all those to just re-load the icons. Just wanted to see how she behaved. Thx Clay.........

The only thing else I can think of is you might be putting to many apps to much data on it. But what you got left seems good to me. Glad to see you got it somewhat working for ya again.

No doubt to many apps, slimmed down and running good.
Oh yeah, luvin it....

Phone being too slow

I understand there are many lag fixes, but i think my issue may be past that
My SGS is very very sluggish lately and was before
I'm constantly finding myself at 100% cpu usage (finding out from android system info app) and its making the phone so sluggish, not only is it embarrasing to hold in my hand... but makes me think about suicide (even my htc vogue wasn't this bad)
Reason i even go close to saying the htc vogue comment is, if my vogue lagged... i would press the reset button.. and quick boot back up and all would be well.. but the SGS once after i remove battery and put it back in, it still has very sluggish boot time and isn't as smooth as before
I AM on the latest firmware btw... this is the info i grabbed from Android System Info
The process is android.process.acore (using 100%) which comes from package org.adw.launcher
The EXACT same thing happened with Launcher Pro which is why i tried adw launcher... i thought it might've been launcher pro to begin with, which is why i did the switch.. but now im having same problem
First launcher pro, now adw
I'm guessing the problem is something else..
-- is this lag the one everyone seems to be having? Hence the "lagfixes?"
I applied Ryans lag fix via apk and no difference at all
Is there a way i can dump log / info / apps so maybe we can trace this down?
I LOVE the phone and constantly show off its abilities, but lately its been doing this and making me look like a jackass haha
Appreciate the help!
What's is your quadrant result? But the 100% cpu is abnormal, you need to solve that first.
Did you get that when if you use the touchwiz launcher?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
touchwiz is smaller.. but I'm currently waiting for it to get to that point of lag again (probably in another hour or two) and i'll manually kill adw and launch touchwiz to see how it works
I just ran quadrant with 1808 and i got error while it was showing my result saying internal error during benchmark execution with a close button
I did it again.. got 2198 but same error
... Before i used to get 2200 and before lagfix it was 880
I'll wait for the 100% lag (i just rebooted) and try again and update
Which firmware are you running?
Sounds like you need to do a reflash and format. Try giving jm1 rev.3 a shot as that is by far the best fw to date.
The latest stable firmware on kies, or from here?
From Kies... JH2
I'm on Bell btw, got the GT-I9000M
Toss3: I guess if there aren't any ideas, i'll do a full backup with titanium... and try reflash/format and see how that works... if not its either phone hardware wise or some app that i have
Sounds like a homescreen widget that is doing a ton of processing and pushing your CPU up to 100%. It believe would show up under the launcher, cause widgets run on the homescreen.
that is also one of my theories.. just dont know the easiest way to figure out what it is..
only way i can think is to delete all and slowly add one by one

Could just be a bad phone? How long have you had it for? Can you get it replaced?
i got it i think day or two after launch

You don't need to delete all, you can't have too many widgets that could potentially be burning that much CPU, although if you do that'd be my place to start .
Think about it logically... Widgets that need to poll data (facebook/twitter/RSS) and widgets that use a lot of RAM (anything pretty/animated). My inclination is that you have something set to poll very frequently (1min) that is also trying to pull a lot of data at a time so that its not finishing one full pull before it starts the next one.
If that still doesn't do the trick do a backup and reflash (even to the same FW version is fine) and set it up with the absolute bare minimum of widget and homescreens. See if the problem remains with NOTHING, which it shouldn't, then refill over the course of a few days.
Alternatively, you could just try autokiller on agressive. Your problem is obviously coming from an errant process that you aren't knowingly using. Don't see why autokiller won't keep it stomped down.
i dont have any widget with a low update frequency
i have facebook.. vlingo button.. beautiful home and weather... pure calendar.. stock youtube. . google search. batterylife and a brightness toggle
the rest are just contact or app shortcuts
ive tried killing widget processes as well but that hasnt done much help
today ill experiment a bit more though
The phone is really testing my patience though, constantly having full UI lock ups

Launcher Pro issue on G.O.T 2.2.1

I have the G.O.T 2.2.1 installed and CM6 mod on my Milestone. I have removed ADW Launcher and installed Launcher Pro Plus as default home.
Many times when I'm inside an application and hit the Home button in order to get onto the Home default screen...the icons and widgets are not there and it takes 10-15 second for them to appear...It's kinda frustrating and I have to say that I was using the same Settings under the 2.1update1 stock and the launcher worked without these issue...
Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks!

If you'd search for "lag" "launcher" in Motorola Milestone forums, you would have found this:
If you use ADW or LauncherPro and if after using your browser, email or any other apps for awhile, then if you press the 'HOME' button, if it takes forever to redraw your home screen, and you are sick of that HORRIBLE LAG, then try this: In a terminal,
type su and enter.
Then type echo ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 >> /data/local.prop and enter.
Then reboot.
Now evaluate whether or not this fixes your lag.
If you want to undo what this command does, simply remove that toggle from: /data/ local.prop

I have also tried every fix I could: Disabling Window Animations, the ro.HOME_APP_ADJ hack, low memory profiles for LauncherPro, but it ultimately boils down to the fact that the Milestone/Droid's RAM is the issue, as I've actually had this very same issue affect ADW launcher as well, and I'm sure it would creep up on other Homescreen replacements too
GOT 2.2.1 might make the issue worse because they might have baked in some things that take up a lot of memory, and when android reaches a point where it needs to kill stuff, it forces the widgets out of memory.
There's apparently a complete re-write of LauncherPro coming in the next few months, but even then I'm not sure it will be much help.

Yes...As you can see I have deleted my "Later Edit" because after a reboot...the problem came back...
I'm having the same issue with watching live stream in the browser and some flash contents...It plays for a while...then it closes the browser...
I guess these things will be fixed when the final version of FROYO for our Milestone will be released...
Until then...maybe somebody is wise enough to help us! Thanks!

try enabling in adw settings>system preferences>system persistent. If you enable this Android will take some another witness for his killing process.
