Downgrading from 1.6 to 1.5 - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. I'm very new to the whole community, and also I tried searching the forums and internet, but could not find appropriate materials with active links. What I want to do is upgrade my phone to 2.2 froyo. Currently I'm with 1.6 Donut. I rooted my phone with Universal Androot. When I was reading cyanogen mod tutorial I saw that I need to use frashrec which requires 1.5. So I need to downgrade, any links or suggestions?

just search amon ra g1 or amon ra magic (depends on your device) and download the recovery image and put it on your sd card (don't put it in a folder). Then download terminal emulator from the market and just follow the instruction in the recovery thread to flash a custom recovery.

Rooting g1 phone without having to downgrade to 1.0?

I dont know if there's another thread like this but I've been researching for the rooting of the g1
I know that to root the g1 you have to downgrade to rc29 (which is 1.0), use telnet to root and flash a recovery img in order to install a custom rom.
I found it rather long having to downgrade to 1.0, to root, to flash, then open recovery mode to wipe, install 1.6 recovery img and finally to install a custom rom (in this case Cyanogen).
And what i find disappointing is have to wipe the unit...twice!
Is there a way to downgrade directly to a RC29 of 1.5 root with one click and update the custom rom? Without having to wipe the unit? Just like the iPhone that you can jailbreak it without deleting the whole unit.
Number 1 wrong section... Number 2 I started with a fresh G1 last night, downloaded everything with said phone... downgraded, rooted, and flashed new spl, manup eclair, and ram hack last night in less than 45 mins... takes like 20 if you have everything ready....
once you downgrade or install a new rom, its going to wipe it out anyway.
YOu seem like your taking the long road. Look for the one click root thread. You have to downgrade first, if you didnt it would be specified right? Its to open up an exploit in order to install the recovery. You also dont have to use TELNET anymore.
If your device still has android 1.5 on it, you should be able to 1-click-root it directly.
By the time i first root it I was in 1.6 so i have to downgrade it.
However most tutorial that says to downgrade to 1.0 they always use telnet. And those rooting from 1.5 mostly use the flashrec.apk. For example Cyanogen Wiki uses telnet.
The question is can flashrec.apk be use in 1.0? I mean i find it the same as telnet. I mean i only have to write "flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.4.img [enter]" while in flashrec I still have to write the directory where the file is or download it.
After that the recovery mode step is the same for both.
Last time i tried the flashrec.apk in 1.5(non-patch) it let me back up but each time i write the download page or directory where i download the recovery image the flash option is still gray out.
For few developers and hackers here at my place they find it long and complex compare to the iPhone that's why I was asking for an easier way. Not that I mind these step I can do it easily with telnet as it seems to work for me. Just for the record.

Help! Trying to upgrade recovery from 1.2.3 to 1.5.2

None of the methods listed at forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561124 are working for me.
Any ideas? Links? Tips?
Start over from a non-rooted ROM and re-root with flashrec using the 1.5.2 or 1.6.2 (I'd recommend) and see if that works...flash rec is the easiest way I've found to root for not techie forum members (like me in the sense that I'm no commandline junkie LOL).
search the forum for the flashrec steps there's a youtube video and everything
Good luck!
your useing the wrong method that is for the GSM hero so go here and download the correct recovery image and follow those steps
if you downloaded the image from your first post DO NOT FLASH IT
Turns out my problem was not having the ADB driver installed in Win7 32-bit.
Thanks, all.

[Q] Easiest, Safest path to CM6?

Hi everyone.
I recently bricked a G1 via Danger SPL and bought a new one. I'm merely a developer testing my games on the G1 however I'd like to have multi-touch functionality as well as 2.2 support, but I don't want to brick it. I'm on 1.6 right now.
What is the easiest way to root and then flash to CM6? I tried searching and only found old tutorials that said different things and I don't want to screw around, I just want CM6 running asap and not another brick.
Thanks!
I'm pretty sure you don't need the danger spl to run cm6 it says danger came out before the g2 I have ran cm without the danger spl theunlockr.com has an easy way to root the phone it also walks you through how to install the rom.

You could just use the ROM bible in the G1 forum. It's really simple and I just rooted and flashed my G1 yesterday. If you need any help just pm me and I'll gladly you give any advice I know.
download universal androot from the market (or find the .apk online) and install it. It will root the phone without any trouble. Then use the terminal to flash a custom recovery.
Finally, flash the danger spl correctly this time or use firerat's mtd patch to install cm 6

Post above says I don't need Danger SPL?
What is FireRat's mtd?
Could someone link me to a direct tutorial for all of this?
It'd be awesome if I could get step-by-step on:
Flashing Clockwork Recovery
Safely Flashing CM6.
Will CM6 work without DangerSPL?
Are there other Froyo alternatives that are easier to get to?
Also, an easy way to alternate between 1.5 and 2.2 would be great. Something as simple as flashing a ZIP to get back to 1.5, then flashing a ZIP to get back to 2.2.

[Q] ROM Manager on HTC Magic?

Hi guys.
I’m very sorry if this problem have been asked before in this forums, but I’ve searched, and cannot find a solution for my problem. So here goes.
I have a HTC Magic 32A (OS: Android 1.5 Cupcake + HTC Sense) and I’ve successfully rooted it with the SuperOneClick App following this guide from theunlockr website (how-to-root-your-android-phone-superoneclick-method). I assume I was successful because when I open busy box it says that my phone is rooted.
So my problem starts when I’m trying to follow the second guide on how to load a custom rom. (how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-your-android-phone-after-any-one-click-root-methods/)
They say I must download ROM Manager from the Market, but when I try, it says “installation error”. The current version is 3.xx and I’ve also tried the 1.8.4.1 version but then it says “ROM Manager could not be installed on this phone”
So my question is what can I do to get ROM Manager on my Magic?
Thanks for you time!
ROM Manager is probably recommended to you because it will allow you to overwrite your stock recovery with ClockworkMod recovery. So if it's not working, get the ClockworkMod zip from a forum, rename to update.zip and place in the root of your SD, reboot to recovery, choose (re)Install Packages and it should open the new recovery. Sometimes it takes 2 goes to get it working.
Then download a ROM, stick it on your SD and use ClockworkMod recovery to install. Read more forums first though, so you know what you're doing.
Sorry if it's different for 32A but that would definitely work for 32B.

[Q] rommanager /universal androot v1.6.2 beta 5

Hi guys! so i have a htc t-mobile g1 firmware version 1.6 build number dmd
64. I have installed rom manager and universal androot v1.6.2 beta 5. I rooted phone and flashed clockwork mod recovery. I would like to install a rom.
where do i go from here? Do I have to still downgrade the sofware or can I go right from 1.6 dmd 64 to a rom. the option download a rom does not work,I get message the requested item cannot be found. what are my options? can someone please help me! i am total noob and this is my only phone for now don't wanna screw it up. sorry for long post just trying to be accurate.....thanks.
is the recovery installed?
you went the fast way but it still usually works
power on the phone holding the home button
if your in clockwork recovery then your ok, just flash a rom
the newest roms require more work from you to get them though
see here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139
yes, it does go into clockwork recovery. i had flashed clockworkmod recovery and backed up current rom in rom manager. i was worried i had to downgrade to rc29 or something like that. do i still have to install radio and danger sp? thank for the help and replying
Most roms you want will require you to
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
so no downgrade? ill install radio and danger spl and try cyanogen6 android 2.2. ill follow the cyanogenmod wiki and try it. well see how it goes......
I wouldn't recomend cm6 with only the danger spl, you be very slow if it boots at all. Try cm5. If you want more you'll need to follow the 2708+ update to get the extra ram hack for roms past 2.1

I will try cm5 then thanks....I'll post any issues i have..
i was just on cyanogenmod wiki trying to install cm5 and it says clockworkmod is not recomended or safe.it says to please upgrade to aman ra. so confused now
Its only not recommended because amonra is better for the dream, clockwork will work just fine. Also know that cyanogen helped write the code that amonra is based off of. All that said I use amonra and not the biggest fan of clockwork

first of i like to say thank you for taking the time to help.this is what i downloaded so far, radio 2.22.23.02,danger spl,cm5. there is also something called mirror. what is it? and should i download that as well.after downloading this stuff it needs to be put on root of sd card then i should flash each one?
correct, here is the process
have all downloads on root of sd card
root (you did this)
install custom recovery (you id this)
flash radio via recovery (you can test and make sure by powering on w/camera)
flash spl via recovery (same test as radio)
flash rom via recovery
now you are ready to play with cm5!
the mirror is just in case the download link isnt working for you, same file
thank you so much! you are the man really appreciate it bro..worked perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!
