GPS software? NO DATA! - HD7 General

I want to buy a WP7 just to test out but i also use my phone as a GPS unit using tomtom software. My question is what GPS software is there that i can use that does not use data?
I assume the best replacement is a HTC wm6.5 phone and use my tomtom software?
Cheers

I used Garmin on wm6 & wm6.5, preferred it by far to tom tom & others. Using maps on sd card does not require data, and traffic can be fetched on or off..
Plenty of maps available for world coverage.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

Since the other guy obviously didn't read your question here goes.
WP7 does not have any dedicated GPS software at this time, there are rumours that Copilot and Tomtom are going to release their software, but this is unconfirmed. I suspect with the new found popularity WP7 has, I do think it will happen, it's just a case of when and if someone else beats them to it with a better product.
Bing Navigator is due to arrive soon (again no dates), but it has not been confirmed whether it will be US only like the WM version.
I'm a Copilot user as well as a HD7/WP7 user, I keep my HD2 purely as a satnav and my HD7 for everything else.

I would also like to see this in my hd7. I used garmin on my hd2 before because they have S.E.A. maps and the maps can be put on phone storage so you don't have to be connected to the internet just to navigate. wish there is something like this on wp7 soon. its kind bulky in the pants to carry 2 big phones hd2 and hd7. cause as of now i still use my hd2 mainly for gps and bt stuff.

Um, there's TeleNav, I'm pretty sure that doesn't use data.

To buy or not to buy, That's a question!

Hey all,
I am going to buy my first pocket pc evar, and I used to have a Nokia 6630. I want to use the new pocket pc for something like three years as I used my 6630. I also want to experience something feature-packed and new! According to my investigations, Kaiser is the best availble pocket pc but it suffers lack of drivers .
All I want to do is to enjoy the Internet, Touchscreen and Windows office. And I'll install a dictionary, too.
Finally, do you recomend this pocket pc or not? If not what would you recomend instead?
If that's all your are doing then the tytn II is probably TO much pda for you.. lol. It has it's downfalls like every device, have to do more research to find out if it has everything you need.

If you are not interested in GPS, 3G, Bluetooth Stereo or Push Email you can find MUCH cheaper solutions. The Kaiser may still be the only device that "has it all", but you also need to be realistic this is all on paper and when the rubber hits the road, not everything may work as expected. In fact, if you are not sure you may be able to find a Tilt on eBay for a very reasonable price to see if you like it.
Also consider that screen size is going to be cramped no matter what (not a Kaiser specific problem) and I find using the internet on a screen this size to be very frustrating.

I do care for Bluetooth, and as I told I need a pocket pc which would be useful for future, too.
Another question, these bugs and lack of drivers; are they possible to be solved one day?
Which will be the Next
Kaiser Tytn II Killer ?
I wanted a ppc that had a phone, good connectivity and came fully loaded so to speak so I could get full use now and in the future, I also needed it to be windows based as I run Plecodict (a chinese tool that is invaluable when learning Chinese)... I have to say that this machine combined with Duttys ROM (v4 so far but looking to upgrade that to his WM6.1) is pretty damn brilliant... Its quick, nice to use and so far has not lead me astray... I say go for it...

Dont buy it, gps signal is poor and video driver sucks. Wait for HTC tytn III they might improve it.

Gps signal was rated as good in most reviews I read befor buying my tytn II... first I was disapointed about the strength... so I asked a friend with a nokia with gps... some thing. I think you cant expect a gps signal like stand alone gps-device, but with quick-gps it is really usable in the practice.
Video driver: never read that the thread starter was asking for an video-playback device...
About bugs: PIE isn't usable basicly because it is bad @ rednering webpages at all. So he will use opera as most users... in this case the PIE scrolling bug doens't matters...
Its a great device, I say buy one.
But know what your buying first, go and play with it in the store and be sure it does exactly what you expect and as quickly and easily as you want it to (i.e texting with one hand, you can forget that one - although I have managed it once, I nearly detached my thumb from the joint).

Possible? Yes, but the most likely solution will come from HTC itself IF (and this is a big IF due to a lawsuit between Broadcom and Qualcomm) releases a device with the drivers and the same chipset. Should this be the case, there is a chance someone here will be able to port tem over to the existing models. However, HTC may decide to go a different route with their chipsets. In this case it is unlikely there will ver be drivers.
Keep in mind, the biggest impact of this is video playback and games. In my experience the day to day screen rendering is also noticably affected, but not so much that it is painful to use. Quirky, yes, annoying, maybe to some, crippled no.
However, given the littany of problems including the sounds quality of bluetooth headsets, the keyboard not being able to keep up with very fast keystrokes, the speaker phone being very poor are all problems that have yet to be solved as well.
I think no matter how you slice it, nothing you find is going to be perfect. Every device has it's issues, the bottom line is if they bother you. If you use the problematic feature very often, then it will most likely bother you.
My best advice on your purchase is even if you wait for something different, make sure you give it some time in the market before taking the plunge. I bought the Tilt on day 1, and I wish I had waited to find out what problems it had first. At the very least, I would have know to immediately test out the problem features and see how severe they were. Then, if I thought it was importent to me, I could return it.

Is it worth buying the kaiser/tilt?

hi there,
Im currently a wizard user and i love it, only 2 drawbacks are Lack of GPS and a slow processor. Ive been reading up alot on the tilt lately and heres what i found...
1 - the video/graphics problem still exists
2 - Red Light of death is a COMMON problem
ill be buying this phone from ebay, and unlocking it for T-mobile (USA) since i wont be under AT&ts warranty, i have no way of knowing the RLOD will ever hit me.... so i cant exchange a dead kaiser/tilt
So i ask you tilt users to advise me...... thanks in advance
Will the data work on T-Mobile's 3G when they launch it this summer?
Is there any way to use the front facing camera (video call or some sort of messenger, whatever) on T-Mobile?
What about the push to talk- will that work on T-Mobile?
T-Mobile is so much cheaper than AT&T, and I really want a Kaiser, preferably an unbranded one with front facing camera...

Not a tilt user, mine is an o2 (UK) branded Kaiser. I was a HTC Universal user and loved that. What prompted me to upgrade (apart from the fact the upgrade was free!) was the intergrated GPS and larger memory. I'm very pleased with my little Kaiser in comparison to the size of the Uni and love having everything onboard.
But the million dollar question really is what do you use your Wizard for?
For me, it's a bit of Internet use (love Opera Mobile) over WiFi, ebook reading, PIM, MP3 player, email, skype over Wifi, gaming (but nothing much more intensive than solitaire). I use TomTom don't seem to suffer from the jerky graphics as much as others, and having the GPS onboard is priceless, cos I know that the 1 day I would really need it, I'd have left the external GPS at home with the Uni! I have watched some videos, but I've re-encoded them to a lower bitrate, yes the Kaiser does have issues with high bitrate video's. However on balance, the higher internal memory and integrated GPS means my Kaiser does everything my Universal did, only I don't have to worry about where I'm installing applications, or leaving things at home.
So whilst I am very happy with my purchase, I have noticed my device performs better than some at the tasks I use it for. So it's back to you to tell us what you want yours for!

Have they even confirmed with the rolling out of their "3g"?
well I use my phone for Im/Texting alot and GPS is another major application for me, I drive alot so its quite important for me, ofcourse at the end of the day im gonna use to make calls.
only thing im stuck on is wether i need the qwety keyboard or not
GPS is worth it
I use iGo 2006 and like it a lot. For me, the GPS is why the phone is worth it.
My complaints are that: the speakerphone is not good; the camera could be better and is useless in low light; no insurance offered by at&t; battery life, but I am used to it by now... needs a charge every few days or so depending on what you use (GPS will kill it quickly); the graphics problem is annoying, maybe programs like navigon would work smoothly but the phone is still worth it, I never use my video ipod to watch media because I don't like the small screen.
With WM6, I use SBSH software pocketbreeze for functionality and wisbar advance for looks. Most people care about the speed, but I'm happy with it. Oh yeah, Q-Mobile 1.2 has made the phone much more stable.
One last thing, I got mine for $75 after rebates but I would not have gone over $300. That's me though, some people have money and want a tech gadget that they can customize to their liking.
I upgraded to the Tilt from the 8125 a month ago and have been very pleased with my purchase. Obviously there will be risks of the thing bricking down the road, but you shouldn't let that scare you away from a purchase. If anything, that should be incentive for you to buy the HTC branded version of the phone and not the Tilt.
Just my opinion, but I would stay away from ebay too. The thought of buying fairly expensive electronics sight-unseen from an anonymous seller has always seemed kinda sketchy to me.
Love my tilt. The gps, 3G and faster processor was why i upgraded. I mostly use iGO , Flexmail, MSN, and Google Maps when I'm out. Sold my Wizard 8125 and picked up the tilt.... I have to say that i am very happy so far.
I've had the best phones of every carried in the MidEast area. Touch, Dash, BB Curve, MotoQ9h, and now the Kaiser. Its the best phone with the most available features. The ability to customize the phone in an endless number of ways makes this phones worth a lot more than it is. Even though the video displays aren't the best and worse than predecessors, its still a killer phone. Plus, you cant find a better community, in terms of developers and activity, than XDA. I say this because I was on a lot of there forums and I can say that the amount of intelligence here is amazing.
Get the kaiser and return it if your dont like it.

Diamond Alternatives

Ok I am fast moving towards selling my diamond and buying one of those giant brick phones from the 80's seriously....
Ok the killers for me are battery life, poor reception, its laggy and for some reason it hangs up when I try to answer a call too often.
So I'm sure others are thinking the same thing, what are the alternatives everyone is looking at??
The 3g iphone might be an option for me, I know there is not as much software for them but I made the pc -> mac change a while ago and never looked back. Is there anything else worth concidering with 3G and GPS??
It really depends on what is important to you.. does it need to be small? does the OS matter? Does it have to be a 'smart' phone?
You can start by looking here: http://pdadb.net/
You can filter on OS, screen size (vga, qvga) etc
Personally i havnt found anything of similar size and spec. Only the iphone comes close but apple have really locked it down. I can see software being high priced
Also it'll cost a bomb for the tariff - you can't walk into a store and buy it without signing up on the spot. So even if an 'unlock' comes out you're stuck. Unless you buy a prepay one - price not confirmed yet but probably 400 quid on O2.
If the look of the 3g iphone appeals then check out the Samsung i900 Omnia. Be aware though, it is brand new, like the diamond, and like the diamond, will be buggy.
To be honest, if you want a phone that works, don't buy brand new just released models.
How about HTC Touch Pro?
I just sold a 16gb iPhone to change to a Touch Diamond (which should arrive tomorrow). The iPhone is a great piece of kit - but unfortunately Apple made too much effort making it a cool media device, and not enough time making it a phone.
No MMS, Poor SMS features (not able to delete a single text, no idea of text length etc), No Video Recording etc.
I originally sold it to buy a 3G iPhone - but then I found out its exactly the same software - except with GPS and 3G.
Samsung Omnia (SGH-i900) is an alternative. Coming very soon. But still questions re: which 3G bands it will support (but we already know the Diamond is only dual band 3G, so it likely won't be any worse).
toshiba g910
Xperia X1, no doubt¡. I wont buy Diamond because of the lack of KB and the comments here. Then I was going to buy HTC Touch Pro and finally....I fell in love with Xperia X1.....
The Xperia doesn't have Satellite GPS, only Data GPS (A-GPS) -> No Tomtom etc, only expensive Google Maps navigation.
The Samsung i900 seems to be an alternative, but seems to have a weaker backlight of the display in comparison with Diamond or iphone 3G.

from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-GPS
"Some A-GPS solutions require an active connection to a cell phone (or other data) network to function, in others[2][3] it simply makes positioning faster and more accurate, but is not required."
i beleive this statement is incorrect. agps is more faster and trys to get your position by downloading data from internet
Just my 2 cents:
Death before getting iphone.
Remember boys, Second best they are!
Samsung Omnia, if you want WM one with good features. Only two things that really bother me about it - Samsung propietary connector and lack of proper hard reset (so if you install something bad that prevents booting of OS, you screwed and will have to visit a service center for re-flash).
If you dont care about WM, consider the new iPhone 3G. Its less feature-packed, however price is better too.
Or just wait for something from E-Ten.
Or for Google Android devices
i'll buy a brick if.......i''ll know that is supported here and it will have a sub-forum here, at xda-dev.!!!!!
now serious i found a little funny an futile to open here, in diamond's forum a thread about "i sold my diamond, what to buy instead".
each rom i flash, each tweak i add i like more and more my diamond.
generally speaking please stop posting completely useless post, and stop responding. each time you respond you "bump" it in the detriment of other post that are dealing with important technical stuff and help ppl in distress here. i know, i just did that but for a good cause...lol
we have more important things to do than considering witch new pda to buy and replace the diamond.

Steering away from Windows Mobile...

Hello.
After over two years with WinMo, I've had it. I don't need to rant, because everyone knows what it would all be about.
I figured out all I really use is the web, the horrible calendar and the tasks. All of these are buggy and generally suck. I'm in need of a replacement device that can do this for under 300 dollars. No PalmOS, no blackberry.
I'm considering an iPod Touch, but I don't have a free pocket. I would love the Pre, but there's Bell. The iPhone is too expensive, sadly enough, so I'm out of options.
Is there a good phone with good music, web and PIM support that doesnt rely on data? GPS is a plus
Bye WM
Shame to hear that...

Sadly enough, I doubt so. I found out I'm wasting way too much time on something that should simply be working. I loved the possibilities Windows Mobile offered, but now that many phones compete in the do-it-all field, Microsoft is taking the door.
Windows Mobile is the only mobile platform that will have you edit the registry and download tons of utilities just to get it to work okay. The Diamond was the best phone I've ever seen hardware-wise (perfect size, screen, look...), but Windows Mobile is never getting better (I had 6.5).
What drove me there? Well... my Internal Storage folder, for some unknown reason, changed names to Internal Storage2, and thus everything that relied on this path stopped working right. That was while using my phone in everyday use. On top of that, program crashes, random bugs and horrible PIM apps didn't help.
Let's admit it: Windows Mobile WAS good, back when PalmOS was still alive, but now it's just "that only mobile OS you can tweak". It's true, Windows Mobile can do everything, but it rarely ever does something right.
I still ask the question: what should I get?
On that case try to move to iphoney, as they are made specially to open and use people that not want to spend configuring and customizing and do not care to find that grandma, nephew, store owner, etc have exactly the same device looking almost identical...
For the rest of us that we still like and enjoy to spend hours customizing let´s stick around.
If I was thinking on leave WM I would go definitely to Android...
Have good luck on your new OS platform!
you could get a used iphone for less than 300 beans. but if i were to switch from windows mobile i would go with symbian and get an e71 or n95 or similar.

I think you are in the same boat as I was until about three weeks ago. I had a touch pro for about a year, and spent most of that time flashing new roms in the hope that I'd find a quick, stable rom that didn't eat my battery. I hated the web browsers because they were so buggy. In the end I resulted in cooking my own, but couldn't match the output that the top chefs were producing. The bottom line was that I couldn't find a rom that I liked that would do all the things you mentioned as well as I wanted them to.
So I bit the bullet. After using my friend's new Hero, I realised it was exactly what I was looking for in terms of just doing everything well. But the Hero was too expensive - I still have 6months to run on my contract so I can't afford a new contract and a new Hero.
So I bought a used sim free T-Mobile G1 from ebay, rooted it, and am now running a Hero rom. I haven't looked back. What a difference. Smooth, responsive and what a web browser - it rivals the iphone, and as far as i've experienced, the iphone is the best mobile web browsing experience you can have.
So this is my advice. Ditch WM and go Android. You can sync MS outlook contacts on hero roms using HTC Sync, and then store all contacts and calendar appointments online with Google calendar. As far as music and web are concerned, my G1 is a pleasure to use for both. Co-Pilot Live is also great turn based GPS navigation. Bluetooth doesn't work on any Hero rom, but I never use it, so I'm not really that bothered.
I haven't missed my Touch Pro at all since I sold it!
EDIT: I just realised that I haven't mentioned that the G1 does kind of rely on data. You can set most things to not use a data connection - like weather, facebook etc, but contacts and calendar do sync online periodically. I think you can change that as well though, so best do some research first...
Sorry to hear that. My advice is to get a Nokia with Symbian. N95 8GB is still the best Nokia phone.
If you want to be a beta-tester wait for something with Maemo or get Android. The Android phones currently on the market are crappy at best IMHO.
What kind of device do you prefer? Slide-out keyboard or candybar? Touchscreen or not?
I played with Android on a cornertop at a Rogers store and didn't enjoy it. My guess is that it's mostly because I didn't really explore, but compared to the almighty jesus phone, it wasn't worth the price.
The iPhone is 200$ (3y)/800$ with Rogers (tax inc.) and I'm stuck with them. However if I get an iPod Touch, even if I ditch the GPS, it costs me 200$ and I'm free to go with Koodoo (because that's what I'll do next spring).
I really wanted to try Android too, but the iPod Touch is a hassle-free solution. Nonetheless, I keep looking for really cheap Android phones on eBay. The Pre seemed like the most awesome thing ever, but this time it was Bell.
So I bought an iPod Touch 8GB 2 days ago (sold out everywhere, had to order from apple ) and I'll buy a cheap slim phone to complement it.
You should have gotten a Zune HD...
you should get an android phone...maybe the HTC Hero for sprint when it comes out since it'll have a normal headphone jack unlike the other android phones with only usb port

New Cellphone after HTC Kaiser for 300$?

Hi,
I have my HTC Haiser since 2007 now and before I leave the US in May I am thinking of buying a used cellphone, for about 300$, since they are more expensive in Europe.
I like my htc Kaiser, but I am thinking of replacing it for a newer, thinner, faster device with a higher resolution than QVGA.
I do not need a Hardware keyboard.
I would like something else than the Iphone 3G, and no Android, becoause I need the GPS Function and an offline Navigaion solution.
Do you have any suggestions for a newer phone, like the Tuch HD etc. which is better than the iphone 3g for 300$? (used on ebay)
Thank you,
MasterX
PS: I hope I wrote this in the right forum secton...
Um I'm fairly sure iphone has offline gps with apps like TOM TOM. Cmon now.. isn't this a question better suited for general chat? Tilt 2?
