[Q] Roms on droid x 2.2 OTA - Droid X Android Development

A silly question, as I haven't been able to find an answer anywhere: Is it ok to install custom roms on the droid x 2.2 OTA update? I just had to swap my handset and I've no idea if custom roms like tranquility 3.0 will work without getting stuck @ boot.

OTA Disabled when using Cyanogen????

Hello all...
I just read about Android 2.2 Froyo that is scheduled to come out sometime within the next few months. What I am wondering is will I get the OTA update pushed to my phone from Google and will I be able to update?
I am running CyanogenMod 5.0.6-N1 on my Nexus One.
I apologize if this seems like a dumb question but I am a newbie to all this.
OTA will be gone after rooting, but the update will still be available for root users to be applied through recovery.
It might even leak to root users sooner as was done in the past

Hey KnightMAREcrow...
Thanks for the reply.
But I don't understand what you mean by the update will still be available for root users to be applied through recovery. Huh?
Again sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm learning all this as I go.

If you have rooted your phone (which you have to install cyan), you will need to put back stock recovery and stock rom in order to successfully install the OTA. What Knight said was that, usually updates such as Froyo/2.2 will be out for rooted users like you through Cyan or other Roms, so you do not have to install stock rom/rec. Just wait it Out!
Ohhhhh ok so the next Cyanogen Update should incorporate all the features that will come with Froyo....GOT IT!!!!
Thanks for the lesson...much appreciated!
Even though you aren't getting a notification about the OTA - rooted users will still be able to download a .zip and flash it through recovery just like a custom ROM. This version specifically though will not be the one Google released, I believe they will change things to in order to make it usable by us rooted users.
I don't know really though, but it looks like that is what happened with the previous OTA. Cyanogen will integrate Froyo's features into his ROM regardless, so I guess it really doesn't matter.

Root/deodexed froyo 2.2 (unoffical) to offical 2.2 root/deodexed?

Hey Guys,
I was just wondering if there was anything that could take me from the unoffical release of froyo 2.2 to the updated version in one quick install file or something of that sort...I dont wana loose all my custom settings ):
I am wondering the same thing...I initially installed the Leaked 2.2 and rooted it. Now, I am just very confused about installing the 2.2 ota. What would be the easiest path updating to the Official 2.2.
OTA rooted 2.2 to a deodexed version of 2.2.
Hope this isn't off subject . How can I update the official OTA 2.2 to a deodexed version. I am rooted but new to the X. The X is a bit more work and somewhat scary to mess with due to worry of bricking the phone. I have an Incredible that I work on but my wife has the X soooo I need to learn more about it to take advantage of its full potential. Thanks for any help. XDA development is the best and just wanted to say thanks to everyone for your time and hard work.

Is this possible?- Data2ext

Hey All,
I was just wondering if data2ext would be possible for our beloved milestone. Could some devs please take a look at this - http://www.xda-developers.com/android/new-hack-for-desire-and-nexus-one-data2ext/ ?
I hope this will be possible.

I'm going to say no (on Froyo) currently - data2ext seems to requires the same thing that apps2sd (CM) does, and the G.O.T. 2.2.1 leaked SBF doesn't support it.
If you still have 2.1u1/2 from MOTO - then maybe.
So you are saying that the former one is may be compatible but no for the new one ? may be we have to wait for the officiall froyo for this ?

Yes, the 2.1 moto kernel supports it, but the leaked 2.2 moto kernel doesnt. Hopefully the official kernel 2.2 will. So if your phone is still on eclair it could be potted, but I don't think any devs are focused on eclair roms much anymore
The way it's implemented requires ext access from Android. This requires a kernel module which for now does not work in our leaked 2.2.1 based builds. It will probably work when Moto releases the source code for the kernel. As of now, ext access is only on 2.1 based builds.

So will this work with eclair then? (2.1) And if yes, how?

yes, it should work on eclair - if a dev is willing to try to port it.
Can't wait, hope this will get ported so I can mess with it my Milestone.
Tried this on my Droid tonight and had no luck. On my old phone(CDMA HTC Hero200) I was going from 190MB of internal space to around 473MB of internal space. I just tried it tonight on my Droid with all the coding on Better Terminal Emulator Pro and had no luck whatsoever. I am running CM7.1 Stable on my Droid. It's Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread and thats what I had on my Hero as well. I'll keep looking at the coding and everything and see what I can do for us. I'll talk with some guys over in the Hero Forums about it too. There are different types of data2ext versions as well that may be of some use to us.
EDIT: OK,I had an old android app sitting around on my external called swapper.apk. I gave it a try on my droid today as well and had no luck. I used to use that app on my old T-Mobile G1 way back in the day. Thought it MAY work but got nothing,I'm at a loss right now but will keep working on this for everyone!

Looking for stock rom for use with bootstrap

Im looking for a stock / rooted / optimized rom that I can install with bootstrap.
(Droid 3 btw)
Anyone know where to find one?
Any of the rom here in the dev section work with bootstrap. Just make sure it's not for one of the other Droid 3s XT860 or ME**. You should use safestrap instead, it is almost impossible to brick if not impossible.
like this one?

You should be able to flash that xt860 bell rom and then swap out that 1 lib file and your build.prop to have it fully functional, not positive but if you're going to safestrap anyways I could use a tester to confirm one way or another (this is how we fix verizon roms for our xt860)

[Q] newbie questions about custom roms (bionic)

For droid bionic: custom rom such as Eclipse and Liberty, are they based on the stock moto rom or based on CM7?
wow this is a premature and unneccary thread go to adroid development stickied rom/scripts/hacks etc.. it has a line up if they are 902 based 901 896 etc... click on the link it will probably bring you to rootz wiki and the rom will tell you if it is stock etc.. kinex is stock based eclipse has customized but has parts of blur still in it but is mainly aosp.
search button is your friend
Sorry, if you feel this as unnecessary thread. I did mention the question as newbie question. I did look/search & couldn't find the answer I was looking for. The reason I asked is that whichever custom rom I look, it REQUIRES some specific version from moto original rom such as 902, 901, 893 version to be compatible with that particular rom. That's why I though those custom rom are based on moto rom. I just want to understand why can't we just flash to custom rom like CM7 on bionic. If you can give me a clear answer it will be great.
Thanks in advance.

The reason that you can't flash CM7 over top of stock is this:
Think of CM7 as an "update", since we are on a locked bootloader.
Now, we can't change the kernel, which is the core of the Android OS.
So, with CM7 we can't have everything that CM7 has to offer.
So devs port the CM7 code so it will work with our kernel.
This means that whatever kernel version the dev uses to write CM7 must be installed before you flash CM7. Otherwise you have a ROM with a kernel that is not compatible with it (and that is not good). It would be the same as flashing a ROM meant for an HTC phone to a Motorola phone like ours. It just wouldn't work.
Thanks, Priddyma, for explaining .....
So, basically, custom roms for bionic such as Eclipse & Liberty are built based on particular moto locked kernel, right? Is it also the case with new bionic roms with ICS features, are they built around the .902 kernel with ICS features?
Another question, when we do OTA official updates, for instant update from .893 to .902, the official updates (from Motorola) are capable of flashing to different kernel? In other words, is it possible to flash kernel (If you are Motorola dev & have the unlock code)?
What I want to know is that in the future, if Motorola is nice enough & could release the unlock code so that we can flash bootloader/kernel to whatever we want.
It's already been stated by verizon that it's them locking the bootloader, and not moto.
