Antivirus? Is there a need? If so which one is best thanks
Try Lookout
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
To be honest, I doubt that you need it. As long as you watch your downloading etc habits.
I have no issue with odin.....If I were to catch something it's back to stock and reflash for me. No antivirus here. BTW - this is not advise, it's just my personal motto.
Thanks I'm gonna try agv or lookout if not for the antivirus then for the finding my phone if I lose it somehow

seconding this, just make sure the app you download only has access to what it is suppose to do, on a side note, I use antivirus free.
I feel they are pretty pointless as long as you get all your apps from the market and read the reviews before downloading anything.
Just be smart about what you download.
it only wastes battery.
go look at any thread about "crappy battery" you will notice 1 thing!
they all run antivirus
One word LINUX.
That is what android is. It will only do what you tell it to.
As others have said watch what you download. The only way to infect your phone is by your own mis-judgement. There are no auto installers, you have to approve everything you do.
That being said why would you need an anti-virus?
I mostly agree with that...
However, with the recent issue with Google pulling several Malware apps from the market(most that were duplicates of legitimate apps)
I am a bit worried about where this is heading.
Although I suggest using Droidwall
With a white list to only allow specific apps to access internet.
Listen, I'm brand new to the cappy, so I'm here to learn, and new to Android, and I just learned tho ditch my a/v!

There are a few on the market. Lookout Mobile Security get 4 1/2 stars.

Guys I just want your various opinions on the best antivirus to use on our phone. Speed, performance , optimization, and quick response should all be considered.
And also is it really necessary to have any antivirus on our phone, do they really work to protect our andriod like they claim.
Guys let's hear your opinions.

Net Quinn, AVG, Avast, Norton can be considered and they help to find the rogue app from the signature and you can see the permissions of app easily. Not compulsory to use them on Android and I don't any of it.

Never heard and never used, I don't use AVs on my phone
Android is the operating system with market share of more than 70%, it is very difficult to get people not interested in creating a virus to attack the operating system. But after using some AV I have never found it.
Current AV may not be effective enough to counteract the virus?
So I stopped using it.

The basis for Andoid is of course Linux. I also don't worry with anti-virus on my linux as well. If you grant a virus superuser status you are screwed. So be aware on this point, without Superuser the virus would have to gain such before it could do much damage. Not saying that that can't happen it is just hard to do. Just be careful and you will be fine, probably. lol
On top of that when you install a rom that you download from people in this group, it would be easy to put a keylogger on it without you being aware of it. Then what damage could you do? More significant worry don't you think? Something to think about. Perhaps I am being too paranoid here.

I mean not using avs on Linux is really an air of confidence that the likelihood of getting a virus is rare right.

The amount of Viruses on Linux is rare because the percentage of Linux users are only 2-5% of total PC users and Virus makers concentrate on majority, so is the case of Mac (there are very few viruses for mac because the percentage of users are even lower than linux).

Amount of server market share is very small for windows compared to linux- so virus makers could benefit from that too . It's not just the market share reason for fewer linux viruses, there were small number of viruses on linux but failed to make *any major damages* compared to windows. I believe that this is majorly due to design of the os and of course the way you interact with system as root.
top500.org(for supercomputers) reports a marketshare of 92.4% for linux, 3.3% for unix and 0.4% for windows (http://i.top500.org/stats)
Problem with linux is that *some* manufactures doesnt provide good drivers.
Never used windows( except for digitally signing a pdf doc few times on adobe reader) for past 6 years
I have an HP Pavilion dv4. And I was wondering if I could update to another software. Either Linux or Mac. I was wondering which was better as in perfomance and compatibility. I was also wondering if it was possible to do such.
Thanks in advance. I don't care if this question results in an opinion. That is my intention. To see what the thoughts are of the operating system.
Also, It'd be best if you do not trash an Operating system if you don't have it. It wouldn't make sense.
This will result in being your opinion. It depends on what you are planning to do with the PC. If you are planning to go into rom development, then Linux would be your best choice. If you just want a PC for gaming, everyday tasks, etc., then Windows would be your best option. Mac - I really don't see what that's good for . But once again, it's your opinion.
Putting OSX in "non-apple" hardware is technically illegal.
For general users, a lot of apps may not be compatible with Linux so it depends what you'll be using it for.
So unless you have a specific purpose or function to run Linux, stick with Windows..
Theonew is once again correct, Linux for developers and geeks etc.. Windows for Gamers and normal people. Mac is really for people that do video/photo editing and design and stuff like that. That's where you missed the point Theonew
Final Cut Pro is cutting edge in video editing and as a result it's only available for Mac OS X...
Well.. I want a pc with Geek super abilities since I do have an Android. So that crosses Mac off the list. Mac is of more use for people with iDevices

Linux will not run executable files. It uses archives instead (e.g. tgz).

Why dont you try dual boot? You will have the best of both OS's.

If you're interested in trying out different operating systems why don't you look into virtualization such as VMware.
You can use wine to run exe files on linux. However if you're just a casual user then it's really just a waste for you to try a Linux OS.

There is a difference. One is criminal and the other is civil.

For ubuntu, just download wubi (available here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer)
It will beautifully setup a dualboot with windows and get your Linux environment setup in minutes. But one disclaimer, you will have to figure out how to get WiFi working. HP laptops and wireless don't get along well, be prepared to take some time to find the drivers. But if your using ethernet, you will probably be ready to go right out of the box

Microsoft Security Essentials (and common sense). It's quiet, won't bother you like most AV programs, you won't even know its there until it finds a virus.

I refuse to use a security package made by the very people that provided the security holes in the first place.
Free: Avast is good. AVG is good as well.
Paid: ESET is good.
And all three of those are low overhead compared to other products.
What viruses? I use Linux.

Avast, & AVG miss a ton. Avira (free) has caught stuff the other free ones miss, no false-positives, ether. With the exception of android root kits.

BonziBuddy is the best anti virus.
Currently I use Avast (Free version) with PeerBlock to control activity on specific ports. In the past, I used Kaspersky anti-virus in the past, but my license ran out and I just never renewed.
For free: Microsoft Security Essentials
For paid: Kaspersky PURE or Kaspersky Internet Security 2013
Note about Kaspersky, you can occasionally get them for free on NewEgg.com or Fry's Electronics, usually when a new version os released they give a full price rebate.
