[Q] Getting ready for Gingerbread - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. I had rooted my Nexus One without unlocking the bootloader using the 1-click root application. I have managed to successfully use Cyanogen roms in the past. I am currently running eViL's NXSense v1.26.
I want to now revert back to the stock Froyo Rom, install all the latest updates which have been done after Froyo 2.2 & be ready eventually for Gingerbread . My question is how I can safely revert back to the stock Froyo rom & still be rooted?
I have Rom Manager installed and I am currently using clockwork recovery. I believe that there is an option in Rom manager to flash the stock Froyo rom. Is this the best option to select? Also I have an ext 3 partition of 512 MB. Do I have to format my card to delete the partition ?
I would really appreciate if someone can post a step by step procedure regarding what needs to be done

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829577

Thanks for the link mate. I would still like to know since my Nexus is rooted, if I revert back to the stock rom will I lose the root? Also if I revert back to stock Froyo 2.2, will I get the OTA updates which have been released after that? Finally what about the ext 3 partition? Do I keep it or do I have to delete the partition and how I delete it if it is not required?

Hey guys. Can anyone please look into my questions? I want to switch back to the stock rom while still maintaining my root.

you will lose root on a completely stock (untouched) ROM, no matter the version. But you can always root back through various methods if needed. Rooting does not prevent you from getting OTA updates.
If you go to Froyo 2.2, you MIGHT have to manually update to 2.2.1 (FRG83) depending on if Google made the update available again (it was taken off for some reason...) but you WILL get future updates (such as the new FRG83D)
As for the ext partition, I do not think it's useful, unless you are planning to use apps2ext which requires root I believe. Don't take my word for granted, I don't know much about this.

Thank you replying mate. As mentioned earlier, rom manager does have an option of going back to the stock Froyo rom. I have a2sd enabled. So how do I go back to the stock Froyo rom. Do I have to format my sdcard to delete the ext 3 partition?

Hey guys. I managed to download & install Nexus One FRF91 stock rooted image using rom manager. I have also managed to restore my applications using Titanium backup. I can see all my root applications are working fine & I can also see the superuser app.
Now when I go to Settings--> About phone--> System updates, it gives me a message that my system is currently up to date. Is this because I am rooted? As mentioned earlier I rooted using the 1-click root & so my bootloader is still locked. How do I move on from FRF91 to the remaining Froyo updates while still maintaining my root?
Also when I connect my phone to my PC & use Minitool Partition Wizard, it shows me my ext 3 partition & the swap space. Since I am not using a2sd, how do I regain this space while still maintaining other files? Can I just delete these 2 things using Minitool Partition Wizard?
I would really appreciate some help here folks

Ok Mods I have finally updated to FRG83D without unlocking my bootloader Also I do not have to delete my a2sd partition now. So please delete this thread. Thank you to everyone who attempted to answer my queries.

[Q] How to get stock Froyo for Nexus One

Hey guys, I just bought a Nexus One off of craigslist. The guy that I bought it from has CyanogenMod-6.0.0-N1 on it right now. Im not really experienced with flashing custom roms and rooting or any of that stuff. I put Froyo on my Captivate when I had and thats it. What I would like to do is to get my Nexus One back on stock Froyo so I can start with a clean slate. Im not sure of everything that the previous owner did to the phone and Ive been having a couple of issues with it, so I just want to start over so I know exactly what is on the phone. So what I need to know is how I can do this.
-Where can I find a stock Froyo file?
-How do I put it on my Nexus One? Do I have to erase the CyanogenMod first?
-Any other hints or good roms that you guys would suggest.
-Is there a way to back up my phone so I dont have to reinstall all of my apps?
Im sorry if there is already another thread like this. I couldnt find it. Thank you for any help.
I did exactly what you did. I used the Passimg.zip method http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...des_&_Tutorials#Unroot_.2F_Restore_your_Nexus Was easy as pie. But yeah i didn't need to do backup / restore of apps as it was a new phone. You can't use Titanium Backup without root, but the market as a few other apps that let you backup apps to SD card.
All info including the Froyo ROM files are linked from the wiki. I went with FRG33 and then updated to FRG83.
Thank you. I was reading through the wiki post and I wasn't sure if the files were updated because the original post date was a while ago. So if I do the method that you did, will it unroot my phone? It is rooted right now.

Yes it will unroot it, flash the stock rom and will also flash stock recovery. So if you have a custom recovery installed that will go away too. Plus all your data and apps.

Is there any way to do this without a functioning power button? The only way to select things in the bootloader is with it.

My bootloader is locked, and I'd like to keep it that way. I'm sending it in to HTC and want it to go as smoothly as possible.
Just as an FYI, what I did to get back to stock:
From CM6.0 I flashed clockwork recovery
from clockwork I flashed 4.06 radio (was on 5.08)
flashed stock unrooted FRF91 from an update.zip
used flash_image in ADB from recovery to flash a stock recovery.img pulled from a FRF91 PASSIMG.
Everything works and is 100% stock now.
Sounds like you're all over it then...

Wait, didn't you need to be rooted to flash back the stock recovery?

I was still rooted in clockwork. Using flash_image put it back to stock unrooted recovery.
As it stands I have stock unrooted everything including recovery.
Oh i see, thanks for the details

Gingerbread Update Question

Hi everyone
I have a question, I rooted my phone (Nexus One AT&T version) with Androot after that I downloaded Rom Manager and install cyanogenmod 6.1 before that I do a backup of my stock rom with Rom Manager and stored in my Sd card.
My question are, in case I want to upgrade to gingerbread the only thing I have to do is return to my original rom backup with Rom Manager and rooted again with the androot?
Thanks for your replies.

Yes that should be it.
Actually...
To use ROM Manager, you have to install a custom recovery and with a custom recovery
you won't be able to get the update OTA, since the update will reboot after download
and try to install via the original recovery...
But of course the update will most certainly be posted here as a update.zip that you
can install via ROM Manager...
//Nik
ClockworkMod recovery will install the OTA update as it doesn't check signatures.

I'm sure that within 24 hours (or 24 minutes) of the first release, a repacked update.zip for custom recovery will appear. If you're coming from Cyanogen, take a nandroid and Titanium backup first, then wipe data/cache, before proceeding.
Keep in mind we *don't* yet know if any root exploits remain in Gingerbread. They may well have patched up the "rageagainstthecage" exploit by now. If your bootloader is locked and you want it to stay that way, and you still want the option of root access... then wait for the custom recovery update.zip and use that.
Thanks to all for the answers, I don't think gingerbread have much changes like cyanogenmod 6.1, but in case Google announces tons of surprises with gingerbread I known the best way to return back to get the update.
Thanks

Help!

So I'm trying to root my friends hero and install a 2.2 rom since her stock 2.1 is really slow and freezes a lot. But the whole process is so different from when rooting my Epic 4g and I'm completely lost! Is there anyone who can simplify the instructions for a dummy like myself please! Lol
I'm pretty new to this and just went through rooting and installing the new Gingerbread (2.3) ROM this last weekend. Very happy with it and it's been stable and fast. If you still want to go 2.2, the backup and rooting should still be the same. Here's what I did while it's still fresh in my memory.
Step 1
Before doing anything make sure to back up data from the SD card like pictures and music. Also back up the call log and SMS.
http://android.riteshsahu.com/apps/sms-backup-restore
http://android.riteshsahu.com/apps/call-logs-backup-restore
You will also need to install HTC Sync, the Android SDK, and USB drivers to your computer, because you may need to fall back on it for several steps, or fix any mistakes.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
http://www.htc.com/us/support/hero-sprint/downloads/
Step 2
Rooting - the Z4 method is supposed to be easier,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
but this is the one that worked for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
Step 3
Once you do have root, install a recovery and Nandroid your current settings to have a working install you can return to if need be. I used ClockworkMod and updated to version 3 for Gingerbread, the regular 2.5 version should work for Eclair (2.2) ROMs.
ClockworkMOD, start with ROM Manager from the Android Market. You can flash CWM right from the ROM Manager and then tell it to reboot into Recovery so you can do the backup and flash the new radio and ROM.
Taking ClockworkMOD to 3.0.0.5 for GB
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=929628 (Method II worked for me)
http://romrepo.info/wiki/index.php?title=Flash_the_ClockworkMod_Recovery
Step 4
Flash your Radio
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853868
Step5
Next you can install the ROM you've chosen. You'll have to download and copy into the root of your SD card so the Recovery softward will find them.
Eclair 2.2, find the ROM you like. I chose 2.3 so I can't really help you here. You may want to try out the Cyanogen Froyo.

ASOP Gingerbread 2.3

Step by step 2.3

Also, don't forget the Google Apps
http://romrepo.info/wiki/index.php?title=GApps_Info
and Sprint Visual Voicemail (VVM)
http://romrepo.info/wiki/index.php?title=Install_Sprint_Visual_Voicemail
From there, you can do other mods like themes, play with CPU speed, download all the apps you use, and restore the SMS and call logs you backed up earlier.
I can't stress this part enough. Read the instructions that are posted with every step, several times. I spent a couple days familiarizing myself with each step and making sure I downloaded and copied everything I would need to the SD card.
Hope this helped, good luck!
Very concise set of instructions. Thanks.
I used z4root to initially root my phone, then I used clockwork to recover with cyanogenmod 6.1 stable. Also make sure you get the google/android Apps (like market and voicemail). z4root was fast and I rooted about 2 weeks ago, so it should theoretically still be up and running.

[Q] Nexus One stock GRJ22 (rooted) with apps2ext?

I'm currently running with a rooted version of the latest stock firmware on my N1, and I love the stability and all, except Google's apps2sd implementation is really dumb.
With only a dozen or so apps I am already getting low storage errors.
I've tried flashing in DT's apps2sd but unfortunately it didn't seem to work at all. Are there any other options for me to get apps2ext support without switching to a custom rom?
Try Link2sd in the Market.
It may be better, it may not, but it's worth a try...
Hey SmallWalrus,
I am running stock 2.3.4 unrooted Nexus one. (yes, that is GRJ22)
I have never rooted a phone. Can you please point me somewhere which shows how to unlock and root the N1 with my specs. My phone is pretty old. I am only rooting it because this is a spare one and I now have moved to SGS2.
PS: using a mac and Linux machine. If not then please show me a windows one. i'll try dual booting my macbook pro.

Have you unlocked your bootloader? That was how I did it though, there is no other way to root 2.3.4 without doing this at the moment.
That is what i want to know. How do i do that safely?
Well there is a way to safely root your phone without unlocking the bootloader, I did those steps recently and they worked fine for me.
1. You need to downgrade your phone to Froyo. Get the FRG83 image from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Nexus_One/Roms
Rename it to PASSIMG.zip and copy it to the root folder of your SD Card. Boot your phone into the bootloader and flash the image. This will wipe your device, so be sure to make a backup of your data and apps first.
2. Use SuperOneClick to root your phone. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
3. Now you need to flash a custom recovery. I used the Clockworkmod one, because flashing it is very simple: install the Rom Manager app from the market, it has an option to flash the recovery.
4. Now you are set to flash custom ROMs, either through Rom Manager or the Recovery. You should however do a Nandroid Backup first, in case anything goes wrong in flashing the ROM. Boot into Recovery and you should see a menu item saying Backup or something.
It's really not a big deal as it sounds, I can't guarantee that this will work for you. You should know what you are doing and if you feel unsafe about any of these steps, make sure to search the forums or the web about it, before you execute it.

Sorry, I didn't see your question until now
Actually, it IS very easy to do this, you can find the instructions here:
http://android.modaco.com/topic/299078-how-to-unlock-the-bootloader-on-your-nexus-one/
It does have some warranty implications though, but since I am already using an import set I don't care. According to some, HTC usually shuts one eye and fix your phone's hardware failures even if it has an unlocked bootloader, but YMMV.

[Q] SU has been removed ROM Manager does not find Disk Image

I rooted my device months ago, when my device was running ICS. When Samsung released Jelly Bean update, I downloaded the chinese version and flashed it using ROM Manager, before doing this I had backed up my current rom and saved it to my external SD card.
The Jelly Bean ROM that I had flashed to my handset drains my battery within a couple of hours, so I am looking to restore from the backup I made.
My problem is, when I flashed the ROM, my SU Binary files have gone missing from 'System/Bin/SU' and ROM Manager and Super SU no longer works. I don't know if this has anything to do with ROM Manager not being able to find the Back-Up Disk Image I have on my SD Card or not?
My question is, what is the easiest way to fix this? Can I root my device based on the ICS method I used originally, or will this not work due to having a different ROM? Can I just download the Binary files, then drag and drop into the system/bin folder? If so where can I get the binary files from?
Or can I restore my handset to the back-up I created and stick with custom ICS?
Many thanks in advance
At first get root back

Without root ROM Manager cannot do any thing.
It's normal that you lost root after flashing a new ROM, except if you flash using Odin Mobile and choose keep root option.
Now at first you have to get back root, either follow : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360,
or flash a Philz kernel associated to your new ROM. That kernel includes root and is safe.

Thankyou. I will have a read through.
I think I may have stumbled across some other posts relating to the same problem I am having. It seems to be the sdcard0 issue.
The best you can do is to install safe kernel from phillz, make full wipes, install firmware of your choice and then root it again. I suggest you this bcs when you flash ROMs, w/o doing wipes your batter life wont be so good.
