[Q][INFO]Rooting and Unrooting methods of choice? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off, the Hero I am trying to root is not mine. (as you can tell from my signature)
So, I am not familiar with the Hero's development world.
Rooting Part:
I've found multiple methods of rooting and was wondering which way is the best and most complete way of rooting this phone.
The phone is currently running 2.31.651.7.
I would like it to: Root, S-Off(Permanent Root), Install a recovery, Nand unlock, Busybox, and SuperUser App.
Here is my list:
Manual Rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
Unrevoked root method. http://unrevoked.com -> Confirmed with .5 only. (Thanks user7618)
Universal Root App: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598
z4root app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833954
SuperOneClick: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 -> Confirmed to work on .7 (Thanks Firehawk_1066)
Important parts of rooting that the methods above might not do:
Install a Recovery.
Download "ROM Manager" from the market and install from inside of the app.
Install BusyBox
Download "BusyBox Installer" from the Market.
SuperUser
If you use a "One Click" Method this should be installed automatically.
Alternatively, you can install from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828
Nand Lock
The Sprint HTC Hero is Not Nand Locked, so there is no need to unlock it for /system r/w.
Now for the Un-Rooting part.
If I ever had to take the phone back to sprint, how do you remove root from the phone and set it back to S-On?
Update:
Un-rooting seems to be as simple as running the official RUU file to revert everything back to stock. (Thanks theimpaler747 & user7618)
[Guide] UnRoot using the stock RUU: http://theunlockr.com/-how-to-unroot-the-htc-hero (Thanks theimpaler747)
Unrevoked's Root is Permanent, making it safer to accept OTA's and Immune to RUUs. S-Off with other methods may also be permanent.
The RUU's can be located HERE (!!Make sure you get the correct CDMA Sprint version!!)
Code:

[COLOR="Red"]You[/COLOR] are solely responsible for your actions and what you do with your phone.
If you brick it, [COLOR="DarkRed"]you are the only one to blame.[/COLOR]
Use your resources and do it correctly![/B]
[I]Don't let this discourage you from rooting.[/I]

Thanks everyone. :]

Unrooting is easy. Flash the sprint 2.1 ruu. As for rooting, I used the unrevoked method on .5. Cake and pie.

Does the RUU reset it to S-On?
and do you know if UnrEVOked will work on .7?
btw, love the "Hot Froyo-on-Hero action" signature.

Well, like you, I'm not here for myself but for a friend as well so my expertise isn't the greatest but we both own an EVO and both phones seem the same when it comes to rooting(when doing it manually).
From what I've read the z4root and superoneclick seem to work but I prefer to do phones manually with ADB. So, I would try the first link by tehdarkknight and if you run into to trouble then try a different method.
It won't install a recovery but you seem comfortable flashing a recovery so that is all good. I flashed amon-ra's 1.6.2 recovery for my friend and had no problems.
It also won't install busybox either but that is easy just download titanium backup and hit problems. It will install busybox for you...which you might have already known.
If you have any other questions just ask...

The ruu sets everything back to stock, so if s-on is stock, I would assume it does. I can't say for sure, as I have never unrooted.
Don't know if unrevoked works on .7. I know when I rooted I had to ruu back to .5 to make it work. It's possible, I suppose. Not much help there, huh? Thanks for the sig mention.

I think you are correct on unrooting.
The evo guide basically has you flash the full ruu to unroot if you didn't use unrevoked.

Good, now that that's covered.
Which "One"-click method would be most efficient, easiest, and works with .7?
(For other beginners that might find this thread.)

S-OFF is permanent, as described in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=759955

I used superoneclick v1.5.5 on my sprint hero with the same version you have. Worked 100% and it has an unroot button also so you can root and unroot all you want.
I did unroot just to test and it does work.

Wow, since it's that easy to unroot I might use that method.
Thank you for the confirm.
Does superoneclick protect your root from future OTA updates? Like accepting the most recent 2.32.651.2 OTA?
And did unrooting turn the boot loader back to S-On?

I dont know if it protects from OTA updates...I doubt it. I dont have the newest update because of this reason.
I dont know about the boot loader either. My test consisted of unrooting and then trying to use programs which require root like LEDs hack and Rom manager but all of them told me I need root access so to me thats says im unrooted.

After reading a bit more here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682.
SuperOneClick uses the same root exploit as the manual one, just automates it.
What interests me is what process it uses to Unroot.

Since the Hero isn't in the list, it must not be Nand locked?
Can anyone confirm? (Are you able to flash a custom rom or write to /System?)

Got some answers on the SuperOneClick Thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9368111#post9368111
Modified for Q&A Readability.
Q: How would I unroot manually?
A: remove the su binary and the superuser apk.
Q: Is the Sprint HTC Hero Nand Locked?
A: no.
Q: Can I flash a new rom after using the app?
A: yes, you can.

You can also RUU to unroot

Added some updates to the first post.
If I missed something or someone or I updated the OP incorrectly please message me or post here so I can update it.

LOL, nothing like flashing a RUU to get rid of the boredness. xD
But seriously, Did you use Unrevoked to root?
Or do the other root methods also turn S-Off?
They would have to since the root remains though a reboot, right? (Semi-Rhetorical)
I asked on SuperOneClick's thread to see if it does.
You make a good point, thanks for bringing that up.

I'll gladly help, but first, I'm gonna have to ask a couple questions, how did you root your phone? did you use z4? and are you s-off? if you don't know that that is, I can explain. Under the assumption that you have gone with a temporary root (s-on), you can go here and follow the instructions in the OP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804692
Hope this helps, Happy Thanksgiving!

If you go into h-boot, it will tell you either s-off or s-on. To get there, power down the device, hold the down volume button and the power button and the phone should boot into h-boot.

Root only.

I'm waiting for this device.
I want make the root, only the root without set radio to S-OFF (enable to use TitaniumBackup).
It's possible? if yes what?

If you have Hboot 1.16.000 (which you do if you're phone is manufactured after May 2011 or you've accepted the OTA update) none of the above options would work.
The only option is unlocking the Hboot, so that you can install a custom recovery and a custom rom (pre-rooted):

How to temp root?
Hi all, is there any guide for temp root? Most of what I've read about temp roots were posted around April 2011. I'm running stock HTC 2.3.3 and I want to get temproot in order to run Titanium Backup before attempting the HBOOT 1.16 downgrade. I can manually back up my Angry Birds saves, but not the other saves since I don't know the file structure.
I've tried psneuter and GingerBreak 1.2, both didn't work.

Hi, thanks for that, zergRush did work for shell root. Nand is still locked though, so I cannot install su or busybox in /system/bin, so Titanium Backup is still no go for me (no root access in TB).
Any other ideas?

Thanks nonverbose. I tried it and while there were no error messages, Titanium Backup still wouldn't work. Something about su not having full access. My SD card was automatically unmounted too, and when I mounted it again from Settings -> SD Card and Storage, I lost the root. I did manage to get Root Explorer to work, so I can manually copy out my savegames.

Newbie to unlocking bootloader rooting and getting s-off

I have an HTC ONE on verizon.
I have been reading up on unlocking of the bootloader, rooting and achieving s-off, I have a few questions that I am hoping the XDA community can help with.
1.I am on 4.3 jellybean on my ONE will the new tool for HTC devices?
2. I just checked and the new software for the one 4.4 KitKat is out for my version of the one finally! My question is would the new tool still work if I took the 4.4 OTA update or would I loose the ability to use the new tool?
3. Also I know in this process some where that you loose everything on your phone, can someone recommend a method and/or an app to backup all of that stuff so that I do not loose it?
As for backing up your data, I'd suggest Helium. Since you're not rooyed, you will need a companion app on your computer.

anyone else ideas?
Noobies should not attempt to root or modify
Dont take the kk update and use firewater to unlock and get s-off. Once s-off flash a recovery and use it to backup the phone. Make sure to move the backup to your pc. Then reflash stock recovery and take the ota. Then reflash custom recovery and flash superuser with it. You would then be s-off stock rooted kitkat.
On the other hand, if you don't want S-Off (I doubt you need it), you should OTA-upgrade first to get the newest firmware for your device, then unlock and root. You should still be able to S-Off after that if you want.
If you go this route, you will lose all the contents of the phone. Helium (buggy as it is, it mostly works) a backup of SMS/call log/contacts (if they're not stored in a Google account), and a backup of /sdcard is approximately everything. Also take screenshots of what your desktop looks like, just in case you have a hard time getting that back.
You can take the ota first, it has been confirmed that firewater works on the new ota.

I agree. I doubt you will need S-OFF. You really only need it if the phone didn't allow flashing kernels, radios, and images with S-ON. But since you only need root with the HTC One, I'd suggest to stay away from S-OFF. A simple typo could brick your phone if I'm not mistaken.

I just Ulocked, rooted and S-offed my Freshly OTA updated to 4.4.2 One. No problems or issues.
I used :
HTCDEV to unlock
CWM for recovery and root
and FireWater to S-off
Had some hiccups along the way but nothing that came close to bricking it. Just had to change a few settings and permissions.

[Q] Can you just patch a stock ROM to be rooted if you have S-OFF? Or use OTA updates

I honestly can't believe I am asking such a rudimentary question with how long I've been here, but it's always been "htcdev root then s-off exploit" before.
Now though, I have the option of just simply installing Weaksauce to get a temproot... then running that Firewater adb script with that temproot to get S-OFF, essentially getting S-OFF without needing a (permanent) root first.
To be honest, the only reason I even want root right now is to install that app/patcher that removes the SD card restrictions KitKat added. Again, before since I had to use htcdev first I would root, then install a rooted rom, then get S-OFF, so I already had a permrooted rom before I gained S-OFF. If I already have S-OFF(that means I have full access to the entire flashrom right?), would I still not have root access because the rom itself doesn't give me that access? And if so, can I just modify a permissions file or something similar, or would I need to flash a rooted version of the stock rom? I know those exist, but since I just got this phone I don't want to heavily modify it's software just yet. I know it will still have bloatware, and as much as I hate it, almost all of it is uninstallable on the stock Sprint M8 rom (wish I coudl get rid of Sprint Zone and Sprint ID though).
Well, that, and the other reason is because this phone basically came out less than a month ago, and already had a firmware update from Sprint, it is sure to get more updates down the road. Would rooting and getting S-OFF prevent me from installing official updates? (I don't want to have to wait for a modified version to become available, and if I was going to go down that route, I might as well just use a custom rom). Or could an official update lock me back to S-ON and require me to run the exploit again (providing they didn't also patch said exploit in the update)?
Oh, and oen final thing, because I constantly hear that changing the battery (admittedly, not an issue with the M8) or doing this or that breaks Google Wallet for security purposes, would doing any of this stop Google Wallet and it's NFC features from working?
Weaksauce doesn't work on the Sprint M8.
And of course you can still take OTA updates while S-OFF (as long as your system is completely stock and you have the stock recovery).

Oh, I was under the impression that it could
So then my only option is the htcdev unlock? I really want to avoid basically telling HTC "Don't let this IMEI have any warranty service" if I can. I still won't have any issues getting S-OFF if I use the htcdev method though, right?

No, HTC Dev won't interfere with you gaining S-off.
So, does anybody know about the Google Wallet thing?

Google Wallet and all its features should work just fine.

Fin is correct, that was an issue with the EVO LTE when it first came out, people were not first disabling Wallet before they flashed, and this caused an issue with app reinstallation. I believe that was resolved many updates ago for wallet.

Thank you for the detailed response, It's a great help when people also explain why something does or doesn't work in some way.
So basically, to summarize, for a Sprint M8 I can only use the official dev unlock, and even the temporarily root methods don't work, but after I use the dev unlock I can run firewater to get S-Off?
I am going to have to install a rom with root access after I use the dev unlock though and not be able to rely on the Stock rom through aren't I? I can still get a rom that is 100% the stock rom, just with root access though, right?
Would I have to worry about anything or an OTA resetting me to S-ON? Especially if it can fix the exploit that currently allows for S-Off?

Yes, use HTC Dev to unlock, install a custom recovery, then flash SuperSU for root access. You can then use Firewater to gain S-off. You can stay on the stock ROM, just be warned that you'll get update notifications if you aren't on the latest OTA update. Having said that, you won't be able to install said update unless you reinstall the stock recovery.

It's only the recovery that matters? Not the S-Off or having Dev unlock or anything else? And only for installing a stock update, not running it after it's been installed?
Isn't that easy to flash and re-flash? Can't I just easily re-flash back to a stock recovery, install the OTA, then flash back?
Oh, and can I lose S-Off in a future update or something this way? Or is it permanent once applied? (Although I know you can hex-exit the bootloader to make it look like it's still S-On, not sure if I want to do that since it sounds extremely risky).

It's that easy, yes, and no, you can't lose S-off by applying an OTA update. Take a look at the thread in the link below for more info:
