i recently rooted my phone and when i try to upgrade anything on my phone from xda it cant. it is telling me that the updates are cancelled. when i first rooted my phone it had the green android icon but now it just comes up android in blue, is this a problem.
Sounds like you flashed a ROM with an alternate boot image (Cyanogen, maybe?). One of the most common mistakes that people make is assuming that the phone is not doing anything during the initial load, which takes a long, long time.
Do you have adb? If so type adb logcat while the phone is booting during the "blue logo." If you see the phone is loading up a bunch of stuff (and the stuff doesn't repeat itself), WAIT! After a while you will come to your home screen.
i do not know what adb is sorry for being so new to this. is this an application or etc... all i know is that i downloaded jf updater and everything changed to the way the phone was right before i rooted it.
thanks for helping

The blue android text during boot up is because you flashed an ADP ROM, this is normal, don't worry.
When you say an update what do you mean? Do you mean a ROM (update.zip) or the update t-mobile just pushed out? I assume you're talking about the latter, don't worry about that update, you don't need it.
Btw, what's with the green text? Kinda annoying to read...
sorry about the green. the rom upadate.zip and a update from jf updater. how do i correct this problem.

I'm not really sure what you're asking. To root just follow the guides in the development section..
sorry for any confusion
sorry for the confusion, if have already rooted the phone. I was just wondering what upgrades would you all advice me to get. For instance what are some good applications that everyone is using.
Good applications is really a personal prefrence. All I can say is play around and find the ones you like.

tell me what u are looking for. loking for a hero rom? they do run a bit laggy but it looks nice
or do u want speed and a different look.?
apps are a personal preference but my fav apps are phandroid, tech buzz for android news. atrackdog is a must have! use it daily to find updates for ur current apps since the default update notifier doesnt always work. ringdroid to make ring tones. and opera min..internet browser built for speed. u might think its gay at first but its speed is awesome and u just have to get used to it.
Personally, I would recommend you start by picking a good ROM to put on your phone (I recommend Cyanogen's)...then tweak and hack away XD
Soooo folks , my Baby has arrived yesterday and now i have following Question:
Anyone know how to root this shard? Same as Hero? .... I don´t think so...
Thx for Answers
how did u get it so fast. where did u buy it from?
I think rooting the Legend would be like for the Nexus One, because it's the first 2.1 OS to be rooted, anyway why would you root it if no dev made a ROM yet?
We will have certainly modded ROMs with fully working Live Wallpapers but give them a little time

Depends allways from your Provider, when is your Provider West-EU u can use Market without restriction....
If the Legend is not Rooted we can't install APK games and apps?
It's exciting to see the Legend finally released. But I'm waiting for the Desire
About the apps. I'm sure we can install any apk files on the Legend. As for the paid apps bought on the Hero, you can get the apk file from your Hero using Root Explorer. I have purchased one application and the apk file is located in /system/sd/app-private folder.
The problem here is that if the developer relases an update to the market you won't be able to update your app!!!
So I found my Apps in Hero in /data/app so i can install them to Legend... thats important for first time and later when Rooted then i will use Market...
Bootloader mode, may be helpful for anyone ....
Does Anyone has a solution for rootingthe phone and activate then Market Enabler... Here in Belgium we have the same problem...
is it possible to root it without reinstalling a new rom ?
thx
Yes, i mean it will be possible , we need to wait a bit ... i´m in contact with one dev that working already on the solution ...
Stupid question, but what does rooting does? Is it like gaining full admin rights? Also what is the market activation thing people talk about?

Rooting gives you access to functions that're normally shielded from the end-user. Yes, this means you can do more, but you should also be aware of the risks. First and foremost tampering with the software in the device will always void your warranty. Moreover if your machine somehow has vulnerabilities, and they're exploited, they'll not only have regular access but they'll have full admin access to your phone. It happened to the iPhone, which resulted in ransomware being installed on some iPhones (hacked ones where the terminal password wasn't changed by the owner upon rooting it). So it'll give you plenty of extra's, but do read up on what you're doing.
MarketEnabler is an app which allows you to set different regions for the market. Then you'll be able to download apps which might not be available in your region (developers can control in which regions they want to sell their apps, and some regions don't have paid apps yet).
I'm not worried about warranty. Besides you can always flash a official rom back right?
Checked up some more on rooting and it doesnt seem too usefull yet? Removing default apps you dont use and move the cache to SD card seems to be the most usefull at the moment. And maybe running apps from SD though that doesnt seem fail safe and google is working on that anyway right?
Sorry for the questions. I get plenty of experience with WiMo but this will be the first time I get a android phone so its kinda like having to learn things all over again
On WiMo its sooo each Just flash and find you .cab's and your good to go. About that, does android actually have some decent copy protection? or is it like wimo where you only need a .cab or the iPhone that also runs whatever you want after jailbreak?
When i look in the settings menu there's also an option accesibility only its shield of.
Does a root give me acces to this option?
I'm currently thinking of getting a Vodafone-branded Legend since it's much cheaper here in my region.
How are the chances of getting rid of the branding (it's software-only, just 2 links on the home screen and a boot animation) and to upload the original rom image to the phone? I want to have the latest updates on the phone when they're released by HTC...
Your going to need a hacked SPL to be able to change the boot image... and as this phone has just been released I'm guessing your chances are very slim at this point in time..
What i mean is to replace the complete ROM with the stock ROM from HTC.
What i've heard is that future updates will probably be released later for the branded phones, so i just want to have updates for the ROM as early as possible.
Most probably it's too early to make any assumptions here.

Well, for the Legend there aren't too much options yet, but for the Hero there's a ****storm of custom ROM's, from leaked 2.1 ROMs to AOSP (Android Open Source Project) vanilla Android builds ( means without HTC's modifications). So for me (not a developer), it's a matter of waiting 'til the device gets rooted and some custom ROMs start popping up. 'Til then: no, rooting won't do you much good .
I would like to get into the scene of rooting my phone now and exploring what it can do. Maybe there's not much it can do that I am expecting, but I won't know what its all about until I do it and get familiar with it.
So I was wondering if anyone could help me out and tell me the best/maybe easiest method to root my phone? It is the HTC Hero with software build of 2.31.651.7 and Firmware version 2.1 -update1
If I am able to root it, which rom would you all suggest I try out as a noob? I don't really want the Sprint TV or Amazon MP3 bloatware. I would like to be able to keep stuff like my gmail, Androidd market, Sprint GPS iff it matters. I would also like to be able to do some customizing in a similar way like with Launcher Pro Plus.
Am I able to root, and if so, can someone help me to be able to root my phone today?
Thank you for your help and time,
Whiteice

If you want to theme (i.e. decompiling framework and rebuilding) you need a DeOdex rom.
GMail and the Market are in every rom and I am pretty sure Sprint GPS is installable from its apk.
But once you have root access you can get RootExplorer and Navigate to /System/App (if its in the same spot as the evo) and delete the bloatware from your stock rom.
I would also like to know the root method of choice for the Hero.
I need to root someone elses phone.
Edit: These might be worth a look.

So when I install a custom rom, does it install the Sprint APK file for me, and then from that point I choose whether to install it or not? If that is the case, does it do this will all the default files and that is how you choose what you want to keep and delete?
Thanks,

Most roms have their bloatware removed and usually gets put in a folder on your SD card so you can install what the rom dev removed.
If you install an OTA based rom it will usually have the stock apps with some of the useless ones removed.
But if you use an AOSP rom, like Cyanogen, there wont be any HTC or Sprint apps.
It's really up to the rom dev to decide what they want in their rom.
Once you flash the new rom you can use RootExplorer or ADB to delete those apps that you don't want.
Is that what you were asking?
Also I found another root method:
SuperOneClick http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682

Yes I think you answered it. Now I just need to know how to root, and what to do when I root to load a custom rom. I also need to find out which rom would be best for me to start out with?
Again, I would like to be able to load some of the default bloatware and rid the rest and then load up some programs from the apps market.
Thank you again,

I would recommend rooting and exploring your current stock rom first untill you feel comfortable with installing a recovery, nandroid backing up, using the recovery to wipe/flashing the new rom.
When I first rooted my phone I was told to
spend a week reading how to root.
Root my stock rom.
Spend a week reading about new roms and how to flash and backup.
THEN try to flash a new rom.
Asking "Which rom is best" usually will get you flamed, It comes down to personal preference.
Here is the wiki of roms for the hero:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=CDMA_Hero_ROMs
First rom I flashed on my evo was a Fresh rom.
It's pretty stock with some tweaks done to it.

And hopefully someone will be able to answer which rooting method to use.

Not a problem, I know where you're coming from. I was terrified to root when I first read about it.
I'll try my best to answer what I can.
And if Unrevoked works with the .7 version, It basically does everything for you so it's really simple.
If you can check your Radio Baseband version and it's one of these, unrevoked should work.
But we should wait for someone to confirm.
(Should be in Menu -> Settings -> About Phone -> Software info)
HTC CDMA Hero, running radio baseband versions
1.04.01.09.21
2.41.04.02.02
2.42.01.04.23
2.42.01.04.27

Again, thank you for your time and patience. I really want to do this and want to do it right. If something would go wrong, I wouldn't know what to do.
My radio baseband version is 2.42.01.04.27
Will wait to hear back or see if anyone can confirm it working.
What is unrevoked? I am guessing it's kind of a "one click" type thing that will root the phone, or is it more then that?
Thank you,
Whiteice
*EDIT* So I read your link and read up on it a little. I have a basic understanding of what it does, but again, this is all new to me
You know, the more I think about it, the more I think it would be easier to ruu back to .5 and root from there. I know for a fact that unrevoked will root .5, as its the method I used. Also, I've heard good things about regaw's root, too.
Just follow the directions EXACTLY and you can't go wrong.

I posted in the other thread of his and HAD recommended manually with ADB but now I would recommend using SuperOneClick. I've been searching google and it seems to be the more popular one. Have yet to read someone using Unrevoked.

ADHD, huh? Then you might be better off with a one click method. ADB method, while not difficult, requires a fair amount of reading and exact typing, or you get a hero shaped paperweight. Superoneclick seems to be the option of choice.

He must not have read it when he joined. Hypocrite.
My Evo made me Swype this from the XDA App.
Try the xda wiki page for the hero... has all good information linked in one place.
i have been thinking abour rooting my phone for awhile but i have a couple of questions.
1. is there any prep i need to do before i root.
2. will i loose anything if i root.
3. do i need to save my stuff on the computer like pics contacts videos etc.
4. what will happen with my apps settings and all.
5. how do i choose which rom to choose and how do i tell the difference between them.
i think thats all for now thanks in adavance
I had these same questions just three days ago. I was able to root my device with one of the guides here on the forums. Rooting is pretty straight forward and for this portion you wont have to do anything crazy except backing up pictures and essential files should you mess something up.
As for roms, I used the cognition 2.3b8 that can be found on these forums. That and because you can install it using rom manager. Good luck and read the guide. Also check youtube.
Pretty straight forward since they have the one click root/indoors for our phones...google one click root for captivate or on here and if u need more help you tube it up...good luck
1) No
2) No
3) No
4) Nothing
5) Nobody can really answer this for you. Check out the different ROM threads and decide which one you'd like the most. I can tell you that I've used most posted here and my favorite, though highly modified by me, is Assonance. For installing a new ROM then numbers 3 and 4 will change to yes and unless you don't mind losing it, don't expect anything will be saved, but back things up beforehand. Always.
Before loading a ROM download and get used to "Titanium Backup" and "Rom Manager".
Just download z4root ..search the forums..its an EASY app that let's you root your phone from the phone...just run the app and click root ...it will reboot and that's it

ok last question i think. i have launcher pro plus and ive changed my icons to how i like them will i need to redo everything after i root and install a rom or will it stay the same and just change the internal stuff?
and z4root wont let me do it cause it says my phone blocks apps not in the market place.
I'd run the one found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739304
Very simple to root your phone doing it this way. And worse comes to worse you could just copy the update.zip into your SDCard and run it under your recovery menu on your phone.
You will not lose your setting or icons in launcher pro by rooting.
Please explain your comment on z4 root. What are you doing that gets you to that comment.

I have custom icons for my LP+ and I don't need to do them over as long as I use Titanium Backup and backup LP+ and data.
Does rooting do anything to the market ID? I basically want to root so I can eliminate the pre-loaded bloat, install non-Market apps, and do full backups. Will this interfere with getting any AT$T updates, especially Froyo when it eventually is released?

device Id will probably change, but all you have to do is while on the stock rom download android id changer from market and save your stock device id. Then after rom is flashed install android id changer and load your id and change it back to the original.
You will likely have to be at stock in order to use at&t ota updates.

Like I said, I only want to gain access to other apps and controls. I do NOT want to flash a custom ROM. Does rooting alone change the Market ID or is that only a consequence of ROM flashing? Also, all the instructions direct you to put the phone into USB debugging mode, b ut they don't say whether to turn this off when done rooting. Is that done automatically?
No rooting does not effect your id. Rooting is easy and safe. It is what you do after youroot that can get sticky
I give you a week or two tops, then you will be asking what is the best custom rom

So, I've upgraded my Nexus One with the OTA from Google and I've lost root, is it anyway to root my device again? I want my crack back!! preferably without unlocking the bootloader, something like universal androot, or z4 root (none of them work, at least market versions), thx for your answers

I guess the only way is to unlock the bootloader. Why do you want it locked anyways? I guess your warranty is long gone + HTC doesn't check the unlocked bootloader as far as i know.
After unlocking you can install a custom recovery and use su.zip ( its there in the android dev section ) and flash it.

In guess I'll havce to unlock my bootloader then but I havent done it before so im kind of scared, just find it way more complicated doing it that way that whit the mentioned exploits, like universal androot: click root, install room manager, enjoy
You're kidding right? It takes 30 seconds to unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery, and another minute to install a custom ROM and reboot. I had mine done as soon as I took it out of the shipping box.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO UNLOCK THE BOOTLOADER. All you have to do is roll back to a build of Froyo. Search for PASSIMG.zip. Apply that through the bootloader. Then you can root using Super One Click or any of the other methods and flash a rooted GB ROM.

..But an hour to learn about and set up the SDK first Once done though it makes life sooo much easier and gives you a lot more versatility.

That.
An hour might be more or less - depends on a user.

I have to ask the question, why go to all that bother just to not have a unlocked padlock on the bootscreen when it really makes no difference?

I think I can make it in less than an hour, lol, anyway, i just wanted to root again because i thought that after OTA the call wonkyness in CM7 got fixed, but it seems is still there, so I'll stay with official GB for a while or untill my abstinence syndrom comes back, and in that case ill try with passimg method just becuase it is a pain in the a55 to setup the SDK (I've done it before, too much data to download and Im currently reliying in thetering to have internet at home).Thnx for your answers.

The only benefit is aesthetics, if it really matters to you. I don't much care for the lockscreen, lol. Aside from that, you're right..unlocking the bootloader isn't any worse. It's just personal preference. My point is that you never HAVE to unlock the bootloader.

To not have a ****ing unlock padlock
Also I don't like thing the easy way. I like "flash_image" instead of "bootloader"'s way of flashing images.

OMG!! Don't even mention it!! I can't stand open padlocks!!! they make me feel dirty!! like I have to wash my hands 20 times! LOL.
Seriously, I don't know, I just find it easier with exploits.
Having the bootloader unlocked is the easiest way to do anything.

Still, for people who just want to root it with a 1-click method, what's the way to do it for 2.3.3?
I used rageagainstthecage for 2.2, then used SuperOneClick for 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 ..... What now with 2.3.3 ?
EDIT: I should mention that most users (like me) want to root their phones without flashing this and that, losing all data/preferences along the way. We just want our phone to be exactly how it is now, down to the last shortcut ...... but rooted!

It's already been stated, use PASSIMG.zip method to downgrade to 2.2 or whatever you'd like then root. There is currently no way to root a 2.3.3 ROM with any sort of 1 click.
There is, but it's not 1-click - having unlocked bootloader allows you to flash SU and change permissions accordingly.
Those demanding 1-click will have to wait until there is any 1-click solution - and this might take time.
I just tried unlocking my bootloader but it says I'm missing AdbWinApi.dll ... I have it though. I've used the SDK for rooting before without any errors like this. Must be my day...

If you upgraded a rooted device - you can also try the "RErooting guide", in one of the threads where you've asked if it's wiping the whole device. It doesn't. But it might not work without unlocked bootloader - I'm not sure that locked fastboot allows you to boot non-stock, even to memory using "fastboot boot" command. If it does - it's a rooting option completely overlooked until now.
