heres the thing my usb cable broke no way of fixing it or buying another one till payday the phone is not completely bricked,i can go into the recovery menu but i need to be able to flash an update or rom from sd card the phone powers on shows att screen and stays on att screen while you can hear the galaxy s sound so the phone boots but it stays on the att screen basically like having a bad digitizer where you cant touch anything.ive searched for about 2 hours on a way to flash from sd card without a usb cable.any ideas?
do you have a rom on the internal memory?
do you have a MicroSD card in your phone?
do you have an SD adapter with a card reader?
if so you should be able to install from CWM
no rom on internal memory yes i have an adapter i think if i can get the clockwork mod update.zip i can fix it but cant find that file.need someone to post it for me lol
The cable is standard USB to microUSB - you should be able to borrow one at work, from a neighbor, walking into any phone reseller. As for buying one, any discount electronics place (frys, microcenter, etc.) should have one $5.
Lol I know this everyone here wants 20 for one sucks living in a redneck city, radioshack Walmart and staples is all.

my captivate cannot turn on at all
NO galaxy s, NO atnt screen, NOTHING
dead like without battery (but i am sure the battery is half full cos i tried it on another phone)
computer won't recognize it when usb plugged
cannot charge at all, no charging screen
SO NO download mode, NO recovery mode
tried all those remove sim, remove sd, remove battery, turn on odin first, connect to pc, having 3 buttons (actually all possible combinations) press, power button release, everything i could found on forum...
the only thing i didn't try yet is the 301k resistor
have a fd making that for me, will try that soon
but i doubt it will work since the situation looks very bad
so my question is...
has anyone with the EXACT symptoms, able to unbrick at last?
if u r those who able to unbrick becos ur captivate was still able to turn on
please don't reply, i really really appreciate ur help
but sorry urs wasn't really "brick"
and those solutions aren't what i looking for
if you want to know what i did...
all i did was trying to flash to Cognition v2.3b6 from a stock 2.1 following the wiki
i watched it formatting, copying files, ... , and then it try to reboot
but instead of successful reboot it stay dead forever
great...
tested even with the 301k resistor now
no luck
Yeah sorry man. Looks like you got a bad phone. Time to call att
i wish, but i didn't buy it from atnt
no receipt no shxx
and i am in canada
You know you still have the manufacturer's warranty. One year. Call Samsung and they will refurb it for ya. I got mine in Canada too. No receipt required as long as you have the original barcode on your box.

You're not holding onto the resistor with bare hands right?
I just get the same problem.
waiting for the solution too.
Have you tried a new battery?
This is my captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine.
your Phone most likely not bricked.
I Actually had this same problem. I really thought my phone was bricked. I would pull the battery and put it back in and nothing but a black screen. I ended up having to go into download mode from another computer. If you do this install drivers first and try to go into download by pushing both volume up and down at the same time then plug in usb cable to computer with odin opened up.

the 301k resistor tested on my gf "still" working captivate
it works
I end up took it to some cell repair shop to fix it
they said they had to replace a chip inside
and it cost me cad$150
anyway now it's fixed
but i think i am going to sell it since i don't have much faith in it anymore
i can't keep a phone that i can't flash it just becos it might never boot again
to those who have the same problem
GOOD LUCK
Doesn't it really work with the JIG?
If it doesn't work, I would not try.
If I just give the phone back to the ATT to fix it or change another one, how much should I pay?
thanks.

in my case the JIG doesn't work
but i do suggest you try it
if the JIG doesn't work for you, then it's really brick i guess
Thank you, I will try it.
我干脆说中文好了,据说关机之后,拔掉电池,然后连接usb,按挖煤键,此时再插入电池,你就能看到挖煤了界面了。。。可以试试。。。good luck。。。
I planing to buy a milestone second hand.
the guy says that the phone doesn't want to format the memory card - he says it's from the software. so he is selling it pretty cheap. the phone is in warranty till august 2012.
i intend to buy it, root and flash custom rom and i think this will fix the issue.
do you guys think this can be a hardware problem though?
or maybe the memory card is in bad shape and he doesn't know it?
You can always format the memory card using a laptop or a computer..
If the card itself is in bad shape, buy a new one, they aren't that expensive
he sais the phone cannot format the card and shows that the card is not formated ( i'm asuming he tryed formating on the pc and still dones't work).
can the problem be from the hardware?
It can.
Easiest way to find out is meet with the seller, and bring a fat32 formatted microsd card with you.
If the phone can read it, then go ahead and buy it. If it cannot (and the seller is telling you that you cannot return merchandise), then you might be taking an uncalculated risk there.

thanks for the info. i will test it with the card from my htc tattoo.
but if the problem is from the software, than a custom ROM can fix it i guess. well it's maybe a try and risk case and i'll have to sell it afterwards.
well i had this sdcard issue as well. Neither my phone nor ubuntu could format my sdcard. A new 8 GB card for 9,50€ solved it for me so maybe its the same for you

Wait, the warrant is up to aug 2012?
AFAIK, Motorola only issues 1 year of warranty.
You should ask him again

If you are looking for true custom ROMs then I would look else ware due to the Milestones looked bootloader.
i was just looking arround for a phone better than what i have - htc tattoo. i love the little thing and don't need anything extremly fast/new or fancy. milestone is nice and the price is good. i just hope this can be worked around with th e sd card
Yeah, just get another one.
Before formatting sdcard you chose an option-settings/sdcard and phone storage/unmount sdcard for safe removal. Then you can format sdcard form the phone itself.
I am pretty sure that's the issue because it happened with me too.

wrong thread
Take with you working sd card an try to format it with phone if it can't format it do a hard reset and try again. When you do hard reset and if the phone can't format card I think this is hardware problem may be the sd card slot is damaged. If everything is ok buy it Milestone is very good android device.
I think I killed it... USB got unplugged while reverting to stock ROM. (don't ask) No button combos seem to do anything other than go to this screen...
Phone... !warning...PC
Can't power off with button, have to remove battery. Is a jig going to bail me out or do I have to talk to those replacement people?
Thanks, Will
.99 at radio shack and a spare USB cable and it's healed!

You will need a JIG - you can build one yourself for a couple bucks or buy one off Ebay or mobiletechvideo (8-9$ with shipping)
Sorry I can't be more useful but you got to a point where it's your only solution

Thanks for the quick response... seems like they'd have an actual BRICK icon! I didn't realize what a boat anchor my old Fuze was till now.
I have got myself into download mode from that screen without a jig before. I took out the SIM and SD cards, and while holding volume down and the power button, I plugged in the USB (Odin was already started) then inserted the battery. It took a couple of trys but it worked.

Not sure that will work as he might be missing or have lost button combo with that bad flash.
@ OP - Go ahead and try it, you never know. Although, I still suggest you get yourself a JIG (or build) as it will save you from soft brick pretty much every single time

Its not a sim card jig ... Its a USB jig.
here is what you need to unbrick the phone:

Is there anyone in WV that has an sd card maybe even a micro wall charger anything really? i got a used droid but no sd card or charger just a usb cable. Its gonna need alot of care screen has hairline crack from top to bottom but still works great. I dont have this yet i just bought it offline. But i think its worth bringing back to life lol. Please anyone PM if they can send something out to me. I cant get around out here im in a rural area. Thanks
I've looked everywhere all over the internet to see if anyone has experienced this issue with not many answers. A while back my Micro SD slot would not read after a few events that I'm not sure which one may be the cause. I have a 32gb Sandisk Class 10 it works and was the proper format when I had it in the phone, it works fine in other devices and phones but not my phone. One event I had was that my phone got extremely hot one day when I was using it outside on a very hot day. Had to turn it off for a little while. But the other event is that I used the test 4.4.2 one click odin back in august. After those few things my micro sd slot never worked again I flashed to an official 4.4.2 using odin and have root but still not able to see the sd card at all. I want to know what I can do, phone is out of warranty. Is there a software issue or would I have to replace the Micro SD/Sim Slot. Is there anyone that would be able to fix this. Could I just replace the logic board, and If that is the case could I replace the logic /mother board with one from a tmobile phone, unlocked bootloader.

At least if it's an SD card issue, getting a replacement is as easy as going to http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/list/kw/microsd microsdhc/ opening a live chat and asking for one.

Hard to say. Stock 4.4.2 should read the SD card, no matter what was there before. (If my many-times-bricked phone can still read the SD card with almost stock 4.4.2, yours should too.)
or would I have to replace the Micro SD/Sim Slot. Is there anyone that would be able to fix this.

It could be the slot. I'd ask around for recommendations where you live. Some shops are great, some just ruin your phone. (I know - I owned a few before I retired. The "techs" who just wanted to start repairing phones, with no training, made "dime a dozen" sound expensive. [Not that I ever hired one. You want to work for me, here's a phone that doesn't work. You have 30 minutes to call me from it.])

Probably. Not "you", though - someone who's opened a cellphone before, at least a few times. One wrong pinched wire and you'll need another motherboard. (The battery has enough power in it, when fully charged, to weld the plastic case to the wooden table - figuratively speaking. Pinch a wire with full battery current available to ground and you'll let all the "magic smoke" out of the phone and it'll stop working.)
...
Well I have opened up a few phones before its not that hard. As far as getting a local shop to swap the slot out that my prove to be a little hard considering were I live the people here are 10 years behind technology. Plus I think it would cost me as much as just buying a new logic board. What I really want is to flash a new rom to my phone I can deal with the 32gb of storage, but everytime I upload a rom and flash it from safestrap my internal memory goes to 0mb available then I have to odin reflash even when I load up via adb, when I restart the phone pass safe strap I just go into a black screen never does anything after that. Right now I'm just running stock 4.4.2 root
Well I think I answered my own question, just bought an OTG cable, I forgot about using a flash drive
