Yes you can update without unrooting. The flash will remove the root. Beware the one you posted is for stock JF6. Find the rom you want to flash and read the op to determine the correct flashing method.
Happy modding!
Being rooted is fine, but you need to disable the lagfix

Not entirely true as it depends on the lagfix. RyanZA's OCLF does not need to be disabled to use Odin.

Use the registry hack found here to get kies to do the upgrade. Remove the lagfix before flashing

As it was mentioned in other threads, yes you have to. I'm not sure though if it applies to all of plethora of lag fixes out there, but it is always a gooooooood idea to remove modifications before trying to do something official with you phone, better to be on the safe side.
As for the JM5 I don't know but I suspect that if Kies doesn't recognize that firmware it will not let you do anything, i.e. if you flashed ROM from other region. But thats only a guess.
Cheers.
EDIT: Bah I've been forestalled :F
I got a captivate that is rooted but this is all I know about it.
2.6.29 [email protected] # voodoo_lagfix_3.0_v1.10
That's the kernel version
Cognition v 2.1.6(atnims v1.10)
that's the build number.
I performed some steps in the terminal emulator to attempt to undo it but basically all it did was task away superuser and superuser access.
I want to unroot this so I can root it in a way where I know what I am doing.
You can not unroot it because there is a rom flashed on it. Search the forum for odin 1click. You have to take it back to stock.

Any one else want to second that answer before I try anything?
Correct, you have to flash back to stock, then unroot.

I thought if we flash back to stock, we unroot the device...? At least my superuser permissions went away.

That's what I thought. If I follow those instructions will I be un rooted or will I be rooted?
Just flash to stock jf6 using odin as suggested and you will lose root...but this is not an htc or motorola, literally there is not much to understand about rooting it, it is just that simple. You do not have issues such as partial root, nand unlock, s-off, blah blah. It is a two minute process and is not even necessary to flash a custom rom if you have cwm update zip on internal sd card
I recently just flashed a new rom and I had realized I never tried the stock 2.2 from samsung and I was wondering what people thought of it and if they were still able to flash other roms or use odin to go back to stock 2.1 and then flash other roms again. Or does updating to 2.2 mess up some of that?
And is it even worth it to try and check it out?
I am running serendipity and my wife has stock. I would not go back to stock if att were to pay me. Her Gps was messed up, bad battery life and other strange issues.

the only thing 2.2 may mess up for flashing roms is it installs 3e recovery which needs signed update.zip packages (can be patched ) , and sometimes you need a new root program.
besides that its... stock. with the 2.2 updates...
Has anyone tried reflashing odin or using clockwork/rooting in 2.2?
I'm thinking i'm going to stay away from it at this point but curiosity my get the best of me....

i sucessfully rooted it using superone click method...but had problem flashing clockwork mode as there is sign verification problem...so i tried to flash back to 2.1 and used AIO method...which bricked my phone...so better to keep flashing good custom roms and be unbricked ....stay away from stock froyo...its exactly 2.1 with stock froyo capabilities...

Yep it does.
hi I successfully rooted XWJV1 using CF root and odin and I realize I doesn't revert 3e recovery to 2e... so my question is how do I apply a "lagfix"?
voodoo cannot be installed via update.zip (unsigned) and I'm not sure what are the effects of flashing the voodoo 3.0 odin package.. does it overwrite the CF root? conflict with it ..? anyone tried this?
thanks!
Have you read the informations in the JVE thread? in the first post?^^
I'm pretty certain there's even a link to the thread you're looking for.
here's the post that is quoted in mentioned first post

Yes take the xwjv1 cf but no cwm...
to have it you have to flash a speed kernel ...or a kernel with cwm

Here is the link to the Heimdall One-click for 2.2
It was found in the sticky for the OneClicks master collection in the Development Section.

It's functionally the same as Odin, just an open source alternative. You can do everything that you can do with Odin.
Its annoying to get work on windows though. IMO atleast.

The drivers are a bit wonky, for sure. They only install for one USB port, so then you need to remember which one works every time you flash. I've had mixed results, mostly due to my complete lack of patience and my familiarity with Odin. I just don't want to be the "Just use Odin" guy
Na man I get it

I want to go to stock 2.2 so that I can install GB... but the Heimdall one says it doesnt wipe user apps... would it be a problem when upgrading to GB bootloaders and then upgrading the ROM?
thanks

If your upgrading through kies to kk4 official, it takes care of everything for you. It has bootloaders in it, no need to flash separately. As for user apps, why would you WANT to wipe your apps? I've went from jf6 to kb1 to kk4 with kies and never lost an app. And I was rooted when I went to kb1
