Hey Guys!
I've been on XDA for about 6 years now and you guys have always helped me out alot with ideas on how to tweak my ever changing smartphones (I think 6 in 4 years?). I've always wanted to contribute but couldn't figure out how until now.
I've been a professional artist/illustrator for over 15 years. Working on projects ranging from kids cartoons to movie projects (Check out Disc2 of the Finding Nemo DVD. Special feature: Mr Ray's Encylcopedia? I created the thing Photoshop. Then the 3d guys animated it in Lightwave!). And for the next 2 or 3 months I should have some free time. Which gave me an idea:
Free custom wallpaper for cellphones, desktops, laptops. Free illustrations you guys can use anywhere (except commercial use).
You guys can tell me what you guys would like me to illustrate. Anything. Seriously. Girls, comic book characters, animals, architecture, you can even send me pictures of your loved ones if you want (but i prefer stuff that would appeal to as many people as possible) and I will pick several at a time and draw them whenever I can. I specialize in comic book characters and girls by the way.
Now here's where I think it's cool. After I draw it, I'll upload it to my blog and this site and you guys can download it and use it however you want for free (as long as it's not for commercial use). I'll even resize and crop the final art for you if you guys give me the dimensions you would like the art to fit into (ex/ phone vs desktop sizes). And another bonus: If you reeeeally likes the artwork, you guys can buy the original. I think that I'll only ask a minimum of a $20 donation (should cover supplies and lunch), but basically it will be for whatever piece you want. If you're very happy and would like to donate more, then please feel free and it will be very appreciated (trying to make this a good Christmas for my family). It will be a "set your own price" kind of thing.
This is going to be an ever evolving experiment. So we'll see if we need to change the concept as we go. But my core goals are to contribute something (free) to you guys and give an opportunity to sell some cool artwork too. So everyone wins. So please tell me what you'd like to see me draw in this forum or on my blog and let's try this out!
Thanks guys!
Here's some stuff to give you an idea about my style(s):

:: Suggested guidelines for posting your requests ::
When posting your requests please include the following information:
1.) Your request. Feel more than free to also include additional info (why you would like this particular piece, what mood you'd like it to be done in, whatever you'd like to add)
2.) Type of device the artwork will be used on.
If Laptop or Desktop, please include screen size (15.6", 17", etc)).
If Cellphone, please include model name (example: HTC Evo, Samsung Captivate, etc). Same for tablets (example: Samsung Galaxy Tab, iPad, etc).
This should help people identify if the wallpaper is good for their phone/tablet more quickly (since most people wouldn't be able to identify the proper wallpaper by just the dimensions)
3.) Size of the wallpaper you're going to need it to be. Width X Height.
(example: 1280x800, 600x800, etc)
Do you do graffiti? Like the lettering in general?
If so could you do one with like an android figure and.under that the word android on there in graffiti letters. Any style.

I played with graffiti style a really long time ago, but I'm sure I could totally do that. give me a couple days. Are you hoping to use it on your phone wallpaper or desktop/laptop?

I'm always looking for interesting dark wallpapers for my android... I like odd subject matter..
. Like impossible situations or colors, serene dusk or daybreak views with something interesting ...like leaf too bright or tree with snow while ground has none or plant emerging from rock, dark metallic fractals, etc. Just like the abnormal, but like the dark colors for phone... Any colors for desktop

Hey Guys,
I'm eating at Macaroni Grill Restaurant right now and they have a crayon and the paper table cloth. Which can only mean one thing: Instant request time!
Please comment on my blog under the latest post what you'd like to see me do a quick sketch of and I'll do it right now! Then I'll take a semi decent picture of it (dark lighting in here) and upload it for everyone's enjoyment. I'll leave the sketch for them to keep here, but I think it's a fun idea to try out. So please comment this request on my blog and I'll see you guys in about an hour

Can you make me a logo? Id like to have the same as my avatar but with a different color scheme.I couldn't do that lately...See if you have time and can help me out with that!
Galaara,
let me see what I can think of. This one will probably take some more time since it's more broad.
Shr,
What color(s) would you like to use? I can do it, no problem!
And looks like the restaurant experiment didn't work out. That's what I get for posting a call to action in the middle of the night! Haha

Hey, just had a look at your website and WOW the green lantern wallpaper is amazing..you got skills.
I'd like to make a request, if it's not too much trouble:
I'd like a Thai Boxing wallpaper for my computer (1280x800), preferably a dark background (but not too plain) with 2 silhouettes, one head-kicking the other, kind of like this http://popularmyanmarnews.com/epaper/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/muay_thai.gif but with more color, making the wallpaper stand out.
If you don't really know what a head kick looks like in action, i'd recommend you watch from 2:30 to around 2:50 here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6zI4Y_P7S0 (watch it all to appreciate how asweme thai boxing is ).
Also, maybe if you're not sure about the style of the wallpaper you could search for muay thai wallpaper in google images. Add your own touch/ideas to it
Sorry if it's too specific, lol.
@Alex and everyone
New art is up! Android Graffiti
If you guys want other sizes for the phone wallpaper, let me know on the blog and I'll be happy to do it for you guys.
@shr
I'm going to have to think about how to approach your request, because it's something you specifically want and since it's your logo, nobody else can use it. The idea behind the PixelReason blog is for me to make cool stuff that can be used by anybody. For specific logo requests and things like that, if I were to take up the work, I'd probably treat it like commercial work and have to charge for it. But I'll think about it some more and let you know.
@me_
I like the idea. I have something that just clicked inside my mind as I was re-reading your post and I think you'll like it. This one will take a little bit of time because I'll be busy for a few days but also because I need to do some research on muay thai to get this right. Oh yeah, and I have one request in front of yours, but I'll probably work on both at the same time
and headsup:
I'm going to be giving away the "Green Lantern brings the Android Invasion" piece within the next few days.
The original requester of the piece will have a few (very few) days to get first dibs. If he doesn't respond in time, it will go to whoever posts the request on my "Giveaway" post first (which won't be up for a couple days). The only thing I require is a minimum $20 donation (to cover postage and supplies). And if you want to donate more, it's definitely appreciated.

Guys, I want to ask for a favour.

I got speaking with the guy that invented this thing, and was mightily impressed. You'll be able to read my review soon... but this is the gadget:
The Alpha Grip:
It's a keyboard, compressed onto a gamepad like device. The keys are positioned around and under natural finger positions, according to usage and linguistic frequency; others are positions under the controller and used with rocker type switches.
It's difficult to describe, but the thing sits naturally in your hands and you have full keyboard access, in an exceptionally innovative, ergonomic design.
And, there's more - it also has a little trackerball that sits under your thumb position, so you can control both mouse and keyboard functions without ever taking your hands off the device.
It is complicated, and takes some getting used to, but when you are used to it, it's amazingly neat and geeky. I used to play all of my FPS games with a nostromo N52, but this thing lets you even further automate your gaming, macros and keyboard layouts. It's not quite the perfect game controller, but it's damn near close.
It is wired USB. Wires are baaad.
Unfortunately, it is not wireless or bluetooth etc, which is something I've spoken to the inventor about implementing. So, it's not quite ready for our phones yet, but as and when it is, wow.
However, I use it with an OQO mini computer and it's a perfect marriage, compact and highly productive (once you master the learning curve and get used to it). I guess you could use it with an xbox 360 and ps3 too, which would be cooool (although I've never tried). It emulates a standard USB Keyboard and mouse, so is highly compatible and doesn't use special drivers.
Anyway, enough blurb, I'm not selling this thing, I'm not even reviewing this thing here - you'll be able to read a full review from me eventually (and I'm in no way commercially connected or benefited from this).
However, my favour:
AlphaGrip, the company, have superb technical support and customer care. I like the product, I like the company. But you've probably never heard of either.
So: Yahoo have a competition on right now running between various small businesses that need more attention. I think Alphagrip needs and deserves this... so, have a look at the Yahoo page, and see if you think AlphaGrip deserves a vote. You don't have to buy the product, or even like it, but just decide if it deserves some of your mouse click love to get a gadget a bit more attention.
Gracias.
Yahoo Competition
V
PS. If you do buy one, tell Mike Willner, the inventor, that I sent you. I'll try to put in a good word for us and get us a deal.
EDIT: guys, I've just heard back from Mike, and he says that when you're buying the AlphaGrip, if you say that you're a member of this forum and write your XDA forums user ID in the comments section of the purchase page, you'll get $10 off the price.
And if you also mention that you've also voted on the Yahoo competition (quote something from his video interview to prove you've seen it), you'll get an extra $5 off! Go out and buy yourself a free lunch on Mike...
He said that they are certainly interested in doing a wireless adaptor or an all smartphone compatible version, so winning the competition will help get them the resources to do that. Hurry up and click already!
Guys, I want to repeat. I don't work for these guys, and aren't commercially linked to them in any way. I've just found Mike and his guys (and gals) to be a refreshingly helpful and conscientious tech company. They don't over inflate their claims, but make 100% solid and innovative stuff.
its got my vote.. im not a gamer but love me some gadgets, can see that thing being very useful
Thanks shogunmark!
I have to say that I'm quite a fan of non standard input devices. My all time favourite is the Microsoft Strategic Commander. If you've never seen one, it's basically the thing the little dude in Flight of the Navigator uses to fly the UFO. It kicks ass, but it's a bit too clever for it's own good. It actually has one axis assigned to flexing space/time, like too much Prince of Persia!
Day to day I tend to use the Nostromo n52 (not just for games, but general productivity work with appropriate macros, keyboard hooks and Windows PowerPro - my all time favourite app)
And I've also reviewed the Wolf Claw, which is more conventional, but useful for WASD users. I'm not a WASD fan personally.
BTW, I finally managed to spend some time with the Wii this weekend. It's not a particularly accurate input device, but novel - has anyone considered porting the open source Windows Bluetooth Input Interface to WinMob? It'd be cool to play doom on your phone on the Tube. Way to get shot in the head...

"Ok, Monday morning, what to do, what to do?
We need to think of a device that has 1% useful therapeutic design, 99% obvious sexual function. We've done massagers, infra red heaters, relaxation balls...
I know, The Knobbler. Reaches the parts other double ended stimulation devices cannot reach."

Hey guys, would any of you consider using the AlphaGrip or any of the above toys, including those for external application only?
One game pad I haven't owned is the Saitek Pro Gamer Command.
I played with it once on a display model and found it tacky and clunky. I much prefer the ergonomics of the Nostromo.
Do you guys ever use these things? Like I said, Nostromo is great for FPS, but you can also configure it to do stuff in productivity apps like PhotoShop, Word, VS2005, Winamp etc (although of course you can do that with pretty much any input device with appropriate software).

Geez, what have I got myself into?! This thread degenerated in a hurry.
finally 21 and now i want software to help me get drunk in delicious fashion soo does anyone know of free software with mixes based on ingredients and such?
Here is one free one that I know of, however it is in no way the best. It actually references an online database to pull the drinks, so you would need a data plan to utilize it. It can be downloaded from freewarepocketpc at http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-pocketender.html
The best one that I have found is not free but was only like $14 USD and is fantastic. It is from Town Compass, but it is quite inclusive... Here's some of the info: http://software.techrepublic.com.com/abstract.aspx?docid=490101

After looking through what was available, I'm a bit appalled by how horrible most of those apps look (and work).
I'm a former (and possibly returning) bartender and used to be a regular on one of the bigger online cocktail forums...so trust me when I say that most of the apps I saw are abysmal in both looks and function.
If there's enough interest, I'd consider throwing together an application to do this all much better. Any thoughts?
AvantGo
Try using www.avantgo.com and add the "Drink Boy" channel. You'll get good recipes on a nice interface that you can view and search for offline. When you're online, it updates itself. I've had a lot of fun with it.

I would definately be down. I totally concur. Half the bartender apps are outdated or are a bit difficult to navigate through. Being an amature bartender, I use my database quite a bit, but yeah if there was a program that would allow you to enter in your liquors on hand and priovide you with possibile combinations... Damn... That'd be sweet....

I freely admit, since I'm out of work right now, I'm fine with being a whore
I've already got a bit of this started, but I'm working on another project first that I think will get a lot of wide-spread usage across the forum. But I'll get back to working on this one very soon.
In the mean time, are there any particular features anybody is looking for. I'm sure it'll be easy enough to figure out all of the features the drinkers want, but what about bartenders? Tell me how often you think you'll be entering drinks, what extra features do you need. Will you actually be using this while at work...with your fingers?
I know this is in the Raph section, though it belongs in Q&A or D&H, but does anybody here want a QVGA version, or dare I ask, W(Q)VGA? If this app is going to see finger-based controls (which I'd expect to make sense), it's not really going to work out having small windows controls, so graphics/resolution will be considered for the first version.

I used to be a regular contributor to the forums there...The biggest problem is that the drink database is absolutely cluttered with incorrect entries and missing a lot of common recipes.
When I start building a collection of recipes, there's actually a couple of people from that forum that I'm going to ask for help/collaboration. I'm also going to throw them a heads up to ask for any thoughts from them on what they would like to see.

lol, from me, it'll be at least a couple of weeks. I'm in the middle of working on another app that'll be quite a bit more relevant on this forum. But I will be coming back to this app shortly.
I'll post more info to this thread when I start it, and then I'll create a release thread in D&H (and post a link to it here) when there's a reasonably good start on a beta version.
You can help out by giving some ideas of what features you'd like to see in it.
this is very cool that you'd consider putting an app together, pour...the best reference app/source I've found is that DrinkBoy channel on avantgo. That said, my advice would be keep it very simple. Not only will this, hopefully, take burden and time from your investment to the group, but I don't think I'd be looking for anything other than:
-thorough database with accuracy on both contents and how to prepare
-a "my favorites" option for quick look-ups and personalization
-organize at the root based on main ingredient (e.g. rum, vodka, bourbon)
-a search option with fuzzy-esque searchability (e.g. southside, southsides or southsider would produce the same drink recipe)
I guess these may end up being more work than I thought but an accurate db, easy search and browse engine with a "my fav's" organizer would be PERFECTION for me!!

I kinda suspect, with luck, my app will draw attention from hopefully every group....the college students, bar patrons, and even bartenders from different types of places. For that reason, a "simple" app might not be too likely. Simple interface is definitely part of my plan, but the application itself is going to be pretty powerful and probably meant to cover a lot of people's uses.

- Favorites will be very easy to implement, so this is pretty much a sure thing.
- The database itself is a subject I intend to take more seriously than a lot of people probably expect (more on that in the future).
- I've got several ideas for searches/filters, each will be fleshed out as I build it. I'm aiming mostly for live searches and the first will be using quick ingredient filtering.
- fuzzy search...I'll see what I can do, but that's one I know very little about. Some quick googling turned up some information that's possibly VERY usable, but it's all written for the the big brother .Net Framework while the Compact Framework gets no love. I'll bookmark some of this stuff and see where I can go with it after I've released a first version. As much as it might be cool, I can't justify porting Lucene.Net to the compact framework for this project. In the mean time, I can use a "Sounds Like" mechanism that would probably do pretty well for an early version. I'm also a little worried about performance.
As a note, I'd previously said that I wouldn't be starting this until I finished another application. I feel a little dumb for not seeing it sooner, but I discovered Sashimi exists (though I haven't started testing it). While it sorely lacks about half of the features I planned to build, it does a far better job at the other half of the features I had in mind. I'm going to try out Sashimi for a while to determine if there's enough reason to build my app (or possibly a configurator/extension of sorts for use with Sashimi, if possible). As a result, I'm going to put that project on hold and move on to this one.
Second note...err, request actually...I'm ok with graphics...sometimes...But I want to make this app graphically attractive and possibly add skinning ability. At the very least, I will need a few decent looking icons for a few things, at the most, it might turn into an entire interface design. One of my goals is to make this app roughly comparable to something people might expect to buy form the iPhone AppStore (after all, everybody is *****ing about the lack of pretty WM apps). So, if anybody has decent graphics skills and is up for helping out, drop me a line and we'll bump some ideas around when I get to the right stage.
wow i had almost forgot about this thread glad to see something has come of it!
definetly excited to see what you come up with
Is this program still in active development? I hope it is because it sounds like it could be really nice/useful!
NOTE: I've noticed that people have began to repost this thread on other forums. While this normally does not bother me, this was not a sole work and many have contributed to this. So if you have reposted this, please give credit.
One of the greatest strength of Android is user customization. This is what makes our favorite OS unique. No two homescreen are alike. Widgets, wallpapers, and icons, almost everything you see can be replaced, themed and modified. However, the number of themes and widget are many that it becomes daunting and a little bit intimidating. So without further ado, this thread will help you maximize your ability to theme and create your very own take on the Android experience. Enjoy!
Ever wonder how to make your Android home screen look like this?

This thread is dedicated to show you how widgets can help create a look to your homescreen. Keep in mind that some might not be free and some have been modded (transparency, color changes etc.) to look different from the original.
ICONS
There are many icons lying around the internet. These are my favorite as they give the phone a minimalist look like so:
They are provided by Ultralinx and can found here http://ultralinx.blogspot.com/
Launcher
There are a number of launcher available but the two most popular are ADW launcher and launcher pro.
The launchers can change the features and outlook of your homsecreen like so:
(Awesome dock Courtesy of zHk3R )
See this Lifehacker article to find which suits your taste and needs http://lifehacker.com/5627286/battl...launchers-adw-vs-launcherpro-vs-helixlauncher

thanks for this, i often search for new widgets but it would take years to find exactly what im looking for in the screenshot thread. i can see this helping many new and old users alike. especially ones like me who dont really participate in the forums and just kinda skim through every so often
one suggestion i have is that you categorize the widgets that you/others post in the first post.
example:
clocks
-digital clock by maize
-weather widgets(flip clock)
-LED clock
-tajim
weather
-weather widgets
-weatherbug
-accuweather
-the weatherchannel
etc..
Beautiful widgets seems to be a commonly asked after one, as does genie widget, and music player widgets.
thank you too!, i couldnt figure out what the name of genie widgets was, ive been trying to figure it out for some time! i just never want to ask cause i feel like im being bothersome
@fliparsenal
Thank you for the credit dude and you did the right thing for giving a link to my blog instead of just the thread.
Do you think you could post this screenshot up and say what everything is, they're my modded apps and EVERYONE keeps asking about them...
Just give a link to my blog.
Cheers buddy.
There are some widgets here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=753151
If I could make a suggestion, it might be a bit easier to do a screen capture of the widget itself using snagit or something similar and then providing a QR to the market link and a link to the mod if applicable.

No need to say sorry, everyone has a life outside of android...I think
BTW the first screenshot, I think you might want to remove it. It's a WidgetLocker Mod. I won't be able to share it because it's not a free app.
commonly used app though
how do you get the fonts in the first few pics? from what i've seen, the fonts don't look like that with the stock program.
You might want to switch out the gtasks code. It doesn't take you to the app, it takes you to a key that unlocks the app, but not the app itself
I feel absolutely disgusted towards you right now. The fact that I had to accidentally view that filth on that 4wall link because I trusted this forum enough, and maybe you as a poster enough that I didn't think to skim over a wallpaper link to expect a "little warning" next to it telling me I may be horrified at what I may see on the other side of it.
If I am the only person on here who feels I should spit in your face for the level of respect you have for some one else on here, than I will. Simply just because you may be okay with viewing that, doesn't mean any one else is. And just because there's a little warning in parentheses right next to it doesn't make it okay either! There are people on here underage. There are also people on here who aren't underage and just don't want to tarnish their mind with that insignificant crap thats in there.
Makes me sick. I never have seen any one bring that kind of garbage onto this forum before this. I never will look here the same. Thanks.
Have a good day.

I would advise you to next that next time you follow a direction that you should learn how to READ, the warning was clearly posted and it is up to individual discretion if they deem themselves mature or not. There's a wallpaper thread here with scantly dressed women why don't you go spit in their face too? On the second thought, keep you nasty slime to yourself, rather not spread your idiocy to other members.
traceit the fonts came from the themes. However there are a couple of fonts lying around the forum. Do a search.
E_man, I'll take a look at it thanks.
I can't tell if you're serious or not. If you are just trollin' then haha (skip the rest)
If you're actually serious, man, how stupid are you? The link that he posted had tons of good materials for wallpapers. He even notated that it was NSFW due to "PORN", I don't know how more clear you can get than that. You go out of your way to click a link that says it contains pornography and have the nerve to be "offended" at the images of naked chicks? So what if there are underage people on here, if they click a link that says porn, i'm sure they know what they are getting into... if not, then welcome to the internets.
be a little more smart when you click on links next time. Just because you can't read, doesn't mean you can take our your sexual frustrations on someone who is contributing to this thread.

I suggest remove the wallpaper link also, your (OP) link is direct to porn wallpaper and it is not a original home link but rather a search you did and contains not only nudity but sex scenes image.
I try search, it contains too many pornography, even just a simple word "blue" "red". I am finding blue or red wallpaper but it link to non related wallpaper.
I believe this is a bit over also (even with noted "may contain pornography" and it is not may, it is contain a lot), XDA is not a porn site.
Some more it is not related to your thread title "Commonly Used Widgets".

To be rather honest, I don't care what you guys think. I knew I would hear you guys say that because I opened my mouth. I am not idiotic, I just stand up for what I believe is right. Even if it means getting called out by some random internet strangers. You may think that I sound like an idiot, but I find it disgusting that we find pornography acceptable as a society. So you can find it as my fault for not seeing your "warning." Thats fine. I never said it wasn't my fault for accidentally clicking. But I did say that just because you put a warning doesn't mean it's okay. So whether you wanna still blame me for this or not, is honestly the least of my cares.

With all do respect sir,
When you buy a pack of cigarettes there is a warning label "smoking kills"
When it does happen that a person dies because to much smoking. You don't blame the company but the person itself.
When there is a sign warning don't put hand in the machine, you don't put it right.
When you buy a game and its rated 18+ its giving out as a advise
So when the OP writes
My Persona favorite 4wall (NSFW may contain pornography)
He puts op a warning and you are the person that opened the link. Maybe out of curiosity or something.
I do believe that people should stand for what they believe in, but if you think about it what you did. In my opinion its not his fault but yours. Some people enjoy pornography while others find it disgusting, why do you think its a multimillion dollar business.
Also i also agree with you that XDA is not a pron site.
But when i opened this topic or any other topic i did not see any porn at all. I did see the link he posted and is did not open it. If i would open it it would be on another website not XDA.
I mean this in all respect to you sir
I’m sure most of you in here are familiar with the midNIGHT rom. I hope most of you are also familiar with ptfdmedic and his blog on lostandtired.com. If you’re not, I would recommend it.
Johnny and I were talking about a week ago about doing some icon set’s and making skinned Launcher Pros to match. We started working on the icons in the development thread I started about 2 weeks ago here. Now when you get people working together on a project, ideas just seem to start flowing. One of the ideas was to do some sets based on an Autism theme to try and do our small part to help spread Autism awareness. We both did a set using very different ideas, so the end result is sets that don’t look at all alike.
Our thanks go to:
ptfdmedic – midNIGHT rom
Timberwolf – Taking the time to answer questions
darren.wlsn1 – Just because he’s DW.
I would also like to thank Johnny Bravo. I couldn’t ask for someone better to work with on something like this.
ZiggSVO for providing the puzzle lockscreen, and talking me into updating this
Sbrissen & Maddoggin for the lockscreen mod
qbking77 for the new base
All of the midNIGHT rom beta testers: chadit, megabiteg, Science Guy, dnathan13, d/\sh, wudstock54, capitaltpt, flyers2114, jmkasperek1
Check our page at PPCGeeks
Autism Awareness Theme:
Here is what's included:
Themed framework-res.apk
Themed twframework-res.apk
Settings, TSMParts & androidpolicy.jar for the lockscreen mod
There are also 4 sets of Icons that can be used with desktop visualizer.
The instruction for the icon sets are further down in the OP.
Just so everyone knows, this is my first publicly released theme for an android device.
I hope you like my work.

The icons in the set work very well with Desktop Visualizer which you can download from the market. Just unzip the files somewhere on your SD card.
To install Launcher Pro you must uninstall any previous version. These have been resigned so you cannot install over what you have. You can backup your setting then restore then after install. Everything except widgets will be right where you left it.
These icon sets and launcher pro can obviously be installed on other devices besides the Epic.
Here’s our first version.
Here’s the second version.
Give us some feedback and let us know what you think. And please, go give Johnny Bravo some love by clicking the thank button on the next post.
Johnny's wallpapers and boot animation coan be found on post #2 here.

I read ptfdmedic's blog www.lostandtired.com almost every day, and one of the things that I have learned is that many children with Autism never really grow up mentally. A 12 year old child with Autism might have the mental state of a 3 or 4 year old. So when Shane mentioned his idea to me about creating Autism Awareness themed Launcher Pro icons an idea just flashed into my head. What is more reminiscent of a child than crayon drawings? I have two daughters, one is 7 and one is 8, and I asked them to help me with this. After trying to explain Autism to them (which I'm not sure I did a very good job, but I will keep trying) I asked them to help me draw a set of icons for my phone. They both love playing games on my Epic, so both of the jumped up and down and said "YES!" I grabbed a big bucket of crayons, several sheets of paper and opened the laptop and showed them all the icons the Shane had made and asked them to draw them. The three of us spent all afternoon drawing icons and they had a great time. Then I scanned them and used Photoshop to build a frame and put a set of LP icons together. When I loaded them on my phone my kids thought it was the coolest thing in the world that something they had drawn was now on my phone.
I could never come close to understanding the struggles that parents of autistic children go through, but Rob's blog helps me see through his eyes. I urge everyone to that installs these icon sets to please share the story of where you got them. If someone says "cool icons", don't just let it end there. Explain to them why its made up of puzzle pieces, and what it stands for, and then give them Rob's website www.lostandtired.com. If we can explain to just one more person what autism is and how it affect the lives of the families it touches, we will have helped out.
***Update 3/20/11*** Added custom boot animation. Thanks soooo much to optmsprim2 for helping me with the format.

Amazing job guys. I'm going to download now. This is a perfect accent to go along with a perfect rom. Thanks for all of the hard work that you all put in to make people like me happy with their phones and also getting some info out to people about a very important cause. Thanks.
Just wanted to stop by and say thanks to you guys for doing this and helping to spread Autism awareness (which I will also do with "Thanks" button). It's nice to see people do something on here like this. A project that actually means something to alot of people, not just a specific phone community/forum. They are a little too colorful for my style of themes I usually run, but regardless I am going to download them anyways, just so I can show all my other real life android nerds at work and such. Very nice concept and they came out great!
P.S I bet you had a blast with your daughters on that project! Not only were you helping others, but I'm sure they enjoyed the time spent with you just as much. Great post overall. I Love hearing things like this.

Johnny and I both thank you for that. I hope anyone in this community that has had any interactions with ptfdmedic or knows of his story is as moved by the guy as we are. Helping him get the word out about autism in this way was the least we could do.
I must say I will probably use some of those icons in my next ROM in tribute, looks good...

I fully support Autism awareness and what not, but let's please stop referring to this as (direct quote) an "Autism theme". Sounds like a theme based on Autism.

I'll respond on here even after replying to your pm; I meant no disrespect at all and I appologize if I have offended anyone or caused a ruckus of sorts. Just from a grammatical point of view, referring to the theme as an "Autism theme" is nonsensical and doesn't convey the message that this theme is intended to put across. Once again, my appologies to anyone I may have offended, I know plenty of people with Autism and I fully support spreading awareness by any means necessary. It is most certainly a serious subject and not to be taken lightly. I was simply pointing out the incorrect usage and connotation of the term "Autism theme".
Please disregard my statement if you wish, and I would be more than willing to delete my post if you, OP, feels it is necessary.

It is most certainly a serious subject and not to be taken lightly. I was simply pointing out the incorrect usage and connotation of the term "Autism theme".
Please disregard my statement if you wish, and I would be more than willing to delete my post if you, OP, feels it is necessary.

Our thoughts when putting these pieces together for every thing on the OP was that most people know what the ribbons, puzzle pieces and hearts stand for. Johnny and I were just trying to do something nice and give back at little for all of the time and energy ptfdmedic gives in all aspects of his life.
I have a couple friends that have childeren diagnosed with Autism. The daily battles they go through are something I don't know if I could deal with.
While doing this I got to make myself more aware by reading the information on the pages I would visit while gathering ideas for the theme.
In no way was it our goal to make light of Autsim in any way, shape, or form.
If anyone takes offence to anything in the thread, I appologize. Feel free to pm me so we can discuss it.
Thanks.

Word up Xda...
In this thread i'd like to share and find out about your advice's, tips and tricks to be a stellar icon designer. Whether its for android, your computer desktop or any other devices.
Beginners or advanced creators, whats your advice's? what's on your mind...???
Tips
Persistence means something in the icon design field, be ready for the long haul if you wanna leave a trace.
Create nice previews of your icons, first impression counts a lot.
Quality is Very important, create with the highest resolution possible.
Find the thematic you want to go for, and stick with it consistently throughout the icon set.
Accessibility will help you, make a simple pack with your .png images in it, and also explore new avenues like creating a icon pack app for the market or even be part of a theme. It will be appreciated because users have different taste.
Don't forget! Make sure a user can see what the icon means, its easy to get caught up in a design that very nice but unusable. Icons are suppose to be functional, so if you make the symbol too small or too distorted its useless...
Maybe your a designer, not a developer... stop trying to do everything yourself and make associations with others. It will let you focus on you main task (making awesome icons) and the devs can do theirs (creating awesome apps). Believe me its the only way to have a complete product. Remember make associations, don't just hire someone to help... A partner is more likely to give his best than someone simply hired who wants his paycheck and then move to another project. Never underestimate the power of involvement.
Tricks
Use Photoshop for the final render of your icons.
In Photoshop, use Actions and Scripting to automate some process.
In Illustrator, use Actions and Scripting to automate some process.
Go beyond, right now im mostly using C4D a 3D software to help make my icons objects and have more possibilities.
Learn Python scripting to automate some process in your 3D software.
They are plugins like EyeCandy for Photoshop that can extend manipulation beyond the realms of generic Photoshop filters.
The size of icons on older Android devices is 72px by 72px, on newer devices its 96px by 96px but create more than one size because you'll need a big version of it sooner or later, i recommend simply doing them at 200px by 200px to start with and ideally you would go 512px by 512px, yes really...
Start with a vector (I make mine with Adobe Flash, or/and Adobe illustrator) then import that vector in Photoshop, that way you'll be ready if you need to make a bigger size later, vectors are really crisp and infinite resolution.
Test your icons in a phone, sometimes it looks very different than on your computer screen, often its a brightness contrast issue.
Test the icons on a black and also a white background, users have various wallpapers.
Advice's
There a preconception in this field that icons should be free, no matter how much work goes into them. If you intend to generate funds from them, be aware that its 1 paid icon packs per 500 free ones out-there... YOU WILL HAVE TO WORK HARD.
Be original, its not easy to come up with something new, yet its not impossible. Do your research before you jump in and study the style you intend to use like its your high schools final exam. its worth the effort.
UPDATES, be ready for them...
Trends are fun to mimic, but in the end it won't save you. Inovate!
Listen to user requests, its your ultimate guide to what you need in the icon pack, one requested icon is worth more than 10 nobody cares about.
It may be tedious, but redraw each icons yourself so that you have the best quality to start with, simply copy/pasting images is not recommended, and very hard to manipulate.
Piracy is rampant in icon design, but the way i think about it is that piracy is simply a competing business. They happen to sell at the price of $0, so you can't beat them on price, but you CAN beat them on 1. convenience and 2. content (piracy takes awhile to get up to date unless you have a hugely popular pack which gets pirated within HOURS of release). As long as these two points outweigh the price difference, you'll be ok.
DON'T give up! Keep trying as every endeavor faces roadblock at one point.
Rule of thumb for posting online: Treat people as if they were standing in front of you. Be consciously polite. Assume people's intentions are good. Remind yourself that your lucky to be alive, and grateful to be in the presence of others. Though I'm sure I've wavered from this philosophy on occasion, I'm not proud of those moments, and try to get better.
Templates
This is a Photoshop template i put together for you to study... if your new to photoshop it may help you with layer styles etc...
good advice tips tricks will be added in this list... its work in progress.
also
if you have tutorials it be nice... ill look for some too
Nice, I shall be keeping an eye on this thread. Currently using Illustrator for bits and pieces, mainly t-shirt vectors at the moment, but I've done a couple of logos too. Would really like to get my head round Photoshop, but it's quite daunting. Ultimate goal would be to have a completely unique personal Icon set that when happy I could release into the wild.
nice

Good that you know illustrator! cause its all about vector! you import it in photoshop to achieve a clean look... ill have to add this to the advice's.. THANKS
Its the photoshop part that I struggle with, although to be honest I haven't actually tried to use it that much, I've been spending all my time learning Illustrator and trying to achieve something that I find acceptable in that. Guess its time to move on to the next step.
I thought that I would show you lovely folks the icons that I designed for my website. I made a couple of others after them, such as the camera and www icons. The plan at the time was to build a whole set based on these, but I have still not got round to it.

photoshop
I have added a photoshop template for you to check out...
This is an awsome start for someone to begin messing about with an original/variation of an icon set.
thanks.
and im even going to throw you a "thanks" from people who wont even say "good job" or "thanks". damn haters!
How do you add a template to Photoshop? I've had this trouble many times and dragging a template onto Photoshop didn't allow me to do much with it. I wanted to use the template but change it out with something else.
well

This is only a photoshop file... just click it and it will open with photoshop.
Take note that the version of photoshop you have matters.
For example, this is a photoshop cs5 file... if you open in up with, lets say photoshop 7, it may open but will be messed up since layer styles (which is an efx if i may say so) wasn't introduced till later version.
What version are you using?
I'm using Photoshop CS5 Extended.
I've been downloading a bunch of extension tools like Eyecandy 6 for it. Gotta be able to have several different styles and stuff to create unique icons with it. Eyecandy 6 is great but just doesn't seem to have a whole lot in it. So I went ahead and got quite a few more extra extensions for it.
My other question is, where can I find more icons to replace/switch out? I was at your website and I didn't see stuff like Terminal Emulator and other stuff. I could adb pull every single app off my phone, even from data and system/data, and find the icons from all of them in their respective folders but that would take forever.
I've basically been looking around to see if anyone had uploaded a huge set of plain, original icons that I could get and use them to replace or switch out.

Photoshop plugins are great, ill add that to the list...
but of course they won't do all the work for you, you will still have to tweak them until you get the desired result. A good trick is to know what you want beforehand and then work until you have you goal meet. Don't let plugins of efx control you, but rather control it.
And now for the icons model. I KNOW ITS HARD, but you'll have to redraw anything you wanna use, it may seem harsh and tedious but that's the best way to go. Ill go even further and tell you that REDRAW is the key to a good icon set. No way around it, don't waste time looking for sources just get to redraw (in illustrator for example) right away and your time will be manage much better this way.
It wont take forever... but it wont be instantaneous either.
Redraw in Illustrator? I have no skills in drawing, lol. I just know how to switch out or replace icons, use the plugins and be crafty with it, tweak it of course. And add anything else to it.
Which Illustrator do you use? I could give it a try. I just don't think my lack of skills in the drawing section is going to get me anywhere on that part.

You can use Adobe illustrator, or my favourite for free hand vector drawing - Adobe Flash.
Is it bad that I vector all my stuff in PhotoShop with pentool, never really learned illustrator. I imagine I am doing it the hard way, but that often is my technique, as I don't read tutorials and try to create and recreate styles on my own.

Pentool is good too, the reason i do vector with illustrator is because sometimes you may want to import these vector in something else than photoshop... for instance lets say you want them in a 3d software like 3dStudioMax... you can import your vector there and do the work, with the pentool you have to stay in photoshop... i think...

I'm pretty sure you can import Photoshop vector into 3dmax.
Frostman...whatever works for you and your comfortable, have at it. I have no idea how illustrator works. Guess its time to open it up and do a couple of tuts to get the hang of it.
And Congrats THAPHLASH for getting on the portal again.

I think u can import vector masks as I had done it to c4d for the text on this piece I did a while back.

I don't even know what vector mask is and why it's that important to have. I didn't even know Photoshop had a vector on it. Photoshop use to be easy to use in the early release days. Now it's got a thousand more stuff added to it AND all these so-called "art laws" implemented into it. Like if you try to do one thing on it and then do something else to it with another tool it'll pop up some warning saying you can't do that without finalizing something. Wtf?
Art, to me, should have no limits and no rules, even by means of using Photoshop to create it.
I guess my high school days of Graphics Art classes is a thing of the past and cannot be used much today to implement into the designs of whatever I'm creating or fixing up.
Tha Krom
Today i was asked:
ThaPhlash, I am a big fan of your work! I am also a big fan of your chrome effect. 0_0 Wow. So smooth! Can't find a tutorial out there that can get me that level of smooth and shiny.

So im gonna answer here so that everyone can benefit...
For those i have used an incredible Photoshop plugin called eyeCandy.
I allows for many customization of that effect and many others, i encourage you to check it out. And purchase it so to encourage further development of this tool.
