Google Maps with GPS and Tether. - G Tablet Themes and Apps

Here's how I got my gTab to do GPS navigation using the GPS and 3G network from my Droid1 (android) phone.
Warning! This takes time to get set up, do us all a favor and don't try to do this while driving. We need you here to discover other clever hacks
Oh yeah, this absolutely sucks battery from your phone. make sure the phone is plugged in.
You'll need to set up two connections between your gTab and data phone: Wireless Tether and Bluetooth GPS.
I'll assume both devices are rooted. I don't know which mod I have on my phone, but on the gtab, I have TnT Lite v2.00. If this works on other mods, please post.
Setup on the Phone:
Install WirelessTether (free from the market) This creates a wireless Ad-Hoc AP that your gTab can connect to for internet access.
Install ShareGPS (free from the market) This outputs the GPS signal over bluetooth your gTab can connect to for GPS data.
Setup on the gTab:
Patch /system/bin/wpa_supplicant - see here for details - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961 This allows the gTab to connect to Ad-Hoc (as opposed to Infrastructure) wireless APs. I personally extracted the file from the zip file in the link and overwrote the one in my gTab using Root Explorer.
Go to Setting->Applications->Development and check "Allow Mock Locations"
Install Bluetooth GPS (free from the market)
Once you've got the apps installed, you can try it out.
Pair your phone and gTab:
Turn on Bluetooth on the phone.
Settings->Wireless & networks->Bluetooth Settings Check Discoverable
On the gTab, Settings->Wireless & networks->Bluetooth Settings Check Scan for devices.
Click on your phone to pair
Click "Pair" on the Pair Request popup on both the phone and gTab.
You only have to do this part once.
Start the Tether:
On the Phone, Start Wireless Tether. Press the screen to start the tether.
Turn on Wi-Fi if it's not on already
On the gTab, go to Settings->Wireless & networks->Wi-Fi Settings
connect to (*)AndroidTether
Start the GPS Sharing:
On the Phone, run ShareGPS - Wait for a GPS fix, you'll see a LAT/LONG on the screen.
On the gTab start Blutooth GPS, Check the box for "Enable Mock GPS Provider", Select your phone and Press Connect
You should now see GPS data in the Main Tab.
Click the Map Tab and see your location on the map! W00t!
Start Google Maps
You know it from here. Navigation works, but I think the mic might not be up to the task for voice search.
Big Thanks to roebeet, and eveyone else for making this possible.

Very cool! Works great on my phone, Evo, w/o mods since Android tether has infrastructure mode and tablet with CM B4.
You werent kidding about battery use. I have 4G going, BT, and Wireless. Power usage fluctuates between 550 and 750 Ma.

sweet! thanks, I got the bluegps for droid which works on my N1. If you have N1 you do not have to install all those ad-hoc crap.
Here is what I did with my N1
N1: install shareGPS beta (free)
g-tablet:download and install blue-gps for droid
google bluetooth gps and click on sourceforge version
1) turn on bluetooth on both and pair with g-tablet.
2) turn on gps on N1
3) turn on tethering on N1
4) enable mock location on G-tablet
5) open maps and navigate!
then you are done!

why do you need to hookup the wifi on the phone and tab - if you are using GPS via bluetooth?? that makes no sense to me..

Google maps requires a data connection to work for map data.

ah.. thanks for clearing that up

Hmm, I'm not seeing any "enable mock GPS provider" in free bluetooth GPS version. Is that a feature of the paid version?
I'm connected and my EVO is sending data according to ShareGPS but Bluetoothe GPS on the tab just sits and waits for a fix.

Katmandu421: you need to enable that in your settings -> applications -> development menu.

Is anyone looking at getting the GPS data by WIFI? Since we have to make a WIFI connection to the phone anyway, it would be nice if we could transfer the GPS data using the same method, thereby reducing the number of components that could cause problems.

Actually bluetooth gps is the best solution since there are myraid of bluetooth gps devices out there. Moreover, gps data via bluetooth is proven to work. Wifi would require you to set up another port to handle gps information. I suppose it can be done...

Droid Inc + SkyRaider Sense 3.3.4 + gtablet = AWESOME!!
thanks for much for starting this post.
I got my gtab sync-ed up with my DINC and I'm LOVING!!!
thank you!
for those who want to know....
the rom on DINC is [ROM] SkyRaider Sense 3.3.4 Final [UPDATED: 11/16/10]
the rom on gtab is ZPad Clean v2.x
very very happy!!!

Just a quick FYI
Using a Droid(1) w/
Wireless Tether
ShareGPS
G-Tab (tnt2) w/
Bluetooth GPS (app)
About every 5 seconds or so, my tab would show me out in the ocean for a millisecond, and then back to the location. On the droid within ShareGPS>Settings> set "Create NMEA" to ON. This solved the problem immediately.
When I connected my TeleNav GPS (instead of the Droid) i didn't have this problem as it already transmits NMEA data.
thanks for the tips guys !! The lack of GPS is one of the few things i was disappointed about having to live with, NOT NOW !!! yaaahoo..

Ayyone tried this with the Navigon app? It downloads all maps to the SD so it should elimiinate the need for Wifi. Obviously would not get traffic updates but the less devices running in the car for me the better.

Thanks, works on my Hero with 2.2 Black Mod

hi im trying to install the bluetooth gps on my gtab but is not showing up on my market i try to install by using the titanium backup did not work too, so can anybody help me

i had the same issue. installed to my phone, pulled the apk, transferred it over (yes, that's the easiest way), and on the FINAL step of getting this to work (upon clicking allow mock location on the tab) -- force close of the bluetooth gps app. i'm rebooting, but i dunno if it's going to work...
anyone else on tnt_lite 2.2 having this issue?! sucks. wouldn't be an issue on cm6.1b4 i'm sure....

i first paired my phone and allowed mock locations within the ANDROID settings before launching bluetooth gps.. I had a similar issue before doing this.

i JUST thought about doing this -- i'm going to flash default settings for tnt, turn that on, then flash back and hopefully i'll be good to go
edit -- that did it. looking good now, although maps is flashing at me in a strange manor, probably due to being indoors and my evo being unable to lock on too strong. either way, kudos for the advice!

Something's wrong...
I can get connected (shows tablet connect on the phone), but my GTab doesn't pick up my location. Am I supposed to to the patch on my phone too? (HTC Hero CDMA rooted, stock. TnT 2.2 on the tab.)
Thanks in advance!

what does the bluetooth gps show, any data coming in at all ? Also, read post #12 and see if that helps

Disable Data and Keep GPS? How do you do it?

I have two questions really..
I live in the Netherlands and have an always-on internet subscription... but when I travel abroad I want to do the following:
1) Turn off all data transfer so I don't get charged for things that want to update or whatever
2) Keep the GPS functioning
Using the connections manager, I turned the data connection off, but this didn't work at all. It would just connect through the phone line anyway. I resorted to deleting all the internet settings from the phone which was a difficult, lengthy and frustrating process, and I ahd to put them all back in when I got home.
Also, after I did that, GPS did not work anymore. I could not find a setting anywhere to turn on or off the GPS by itself... is it linked to the data connection? I couldn't actually turn the data connection on in the connection manager when I deleted the settings... I couldn't access the GPS at all from any program unless I had the data connection on, and working. Is that right, and... isn't that weird?
Yes, it's weird. I faced same problem. Solutions?
To totally prevent data connections, you have 2 choices:
1- remove GPRS/3G configuration from provider
or
2- nodata! That's what I use
About the GPS not working while in fligh mode, I turn on bluetooth and then GPs works
or alternatively rename the access point name...
e.g. mine is "orangeinternet" I stick a character in front "xorangeinternet" and thus it fails to connect if you do accidently start up an app that tries to connect.
I know it works for Orange - cant confirm it with other providers but I suspect it will be the same.
Can anyone else on other provider networks confirm?
nodata is quite handy
Nice, I'll try nodata!
The GPS eludes me though.
Use "Advanced Config 3.2" Available on this site.
Menu->More Settings->Connections
You can disable each network connection. does not affect GPS
To use solely the GPS you need to install a specific GPS enabled stand alone software on your phone, such as TomTom or IGO.
Otherwise you will be using a AGPS data connexion which is expensive abroad.

actually it does... tomtom7 doesn't work if you're in flight mode (no problem with igo8 thou).

[Q] WiFi Only GPS Questions

I was curious as to why there is a button in the notifications menu to turn GPS on and off. I started to look in to it and discovered that there is indeed a GPS chip in the wife only version, or there seems to be anyway!
My question is, what does that chip exactly do? Does it only pick up your location? I can't seem to find any places around me with wifi off. I'm assuming that means all the map and location data is delivered over the internet through 3g or wifi. Is there anyway to use my device as I would a regular GPS device? I know it has all the features but can they work through the GPS chip like they do in a GPS device? Or is there anyway to get this to work?

Ok the wifi is mainly just for accessing networks either open or via ssd and password. You can also connected with mobile AP if your mobile has this option.
The GPS on the other-hand is for mapping and location based services like navigation etc (you can use copilot and several other gps based apps with the P1010). Some of these apps will also piggy back any Bluetooth and or wifi connections that are available for further triangulation if needed. So if you have any apps like various weather and navigation then the GPS is required (but also your location can be shared via your wifi and opt in to give this info through google).
Hope this helps

you can find your location via wifi, enable your wifi and turn gps on, you'll find your coordinates, but not that accurate compare to 3g

GPS still terrible on 2.3.4 sprint tab

First of all, yes I searched the forum, and google, and tho I might have missed something, I think I've tried most of the reccommendations out there (short of a custom rom because those are in short demand for the sprint tab.)
I did a wipe / odin to 24, updated to 28, then 2.3.4. Gps still sucked, so I flashed rooted 2.3.4 and tried 3 or 4 gps "fix" apps for this thing, none of which have made any difference. I can get gps but it takes FOREVER, usually around 5 minutes. Often it will find 6 or more satellites too, but just sit there and not lock on or whatever to any, then randomly it works. I've tried every combo of toggling gps, soft reset, and hard reset.
In texas I had the same problem on froyo, now I'm in Costa Rica... I'm assuming since gps stands for GLOBAL positioning sys that where I am shouldn't affect it. But its just SO darn slow ilby the time it starts working its useless.
and I test it outside on sunny days with open sky, so I know that's not the culprit. Nor ia it in a case when I try
Any thoughts or ideas at all would be MUCH appriciated as I really need to start using my tab for mapping.
Thanks!!!

I think you're doing it wrong son. Try these settings. In wireless and network, mobile networks, uncheck 3g data. In location and security, check both use wireless networks and use GPS satellites. I assume you are using wireless tether from phone to give tab internet. Turn wifi on obviously. You do have the modded wpa_supplicant file for ad hoc for the tab right? I tried timing myself after doing all those settings I said and how long with GPS tools app and Google maps to get a lock and it was immediate. This is coming from never have using the GPS since the complete back to stock with ea24 all the way up to rooted gb.
People are saying to put the tab into airplane mode. If you want to use the GPS or things like weather bug or radar now, you at least need to have location from network enabled for it to assist in finding your location. You're not pulling data from the tower, the tower is helping the apply to locate where you're at, along with the GPS. GPS alone and wifi didn't work for me. When I enabled the settings I told you about, the GPS apps immediately came to life and worked great.

I'm in costa rica with a cdma sprint tab, so 3g is always disabled, and because there is no service I disabled network location because I figured it couldn't get that data with no signal, and my location kept going to some random location around the world. And when I need gps I'm out far away from wifi hotspots too, so not worried about that setting I don't think.
Wifi hotspots only, no tethering, and I don't have the wpa supplicant file, but again no tethering so I'm assuming that is not nessicary.
And in Airplane mode it never gets a lock. At least on froyo it never would. I would turn airplane on then activate gps and it never ever found a satellite. I researched it and I thought in airplane the gps couldn't function until airplane mode was disabled again, even if gps toggled...
I appriciate your input, but I don't think its going to work given my circumstances.
Thanks!

[Q] Is anyone able to locate yourself with GPS alone?

With data from network I can identify the location instantly. However, if I uncheck "Use wireless network", I have never located myself on Googles Maps. Is it a defect on the GPS?
Thanks in advance!
Google maps doesn't includes world map installed, it only store some caches.. you still need network to download map data & network based location, GPS is used for more accurate result & yes it's true p970 gps is not so good.

Thanks for your help! In fact, I already have cache of Google Maps, then turn off the wireless connection, to figure out the performance of the GPS alone. It sucks!
BTW, I used HTC Touch before and its GPS could identify the location very quickly.
have you test with the GPS fix (in hidden menu) ?
Actually you are wrong, GPS in very good in OB.
I used it for a trip of 700 KM and it has difficulty only the first time when it aquires a position (this is normal if you don't use AGPS) like 3-4 minutes...
On the road I turned off GPS by simply locking the screen (IGO8), and on relaunch the GPS position will not take more than 30 seconds. I don't have any data on my contract so it was purely GPS!
The first time it's normal to take a very long time because a large number of sattelites have to be aquired to for pin-point accuracy. Afterword I think it works with 2-3 visible sattelites!
My previous phone was a HTC Diamond, and it was exactly the same if I dind't used the GPS app every day that downloaded sattelites in advance.
It works but it's slow (as it should be). For me it's around 1 minute in hidden menu. Best place for testing outside hidden menu is Compass app (If you don't have data connection for maps)
For hidden menu:
1. Go into the LG hidden menu (3845#*970#)
2. Go into GPS Test
Test it (you need activated GPS of course)
if it's really slow, try this (I think it's if you use network to pinpoint but everyone is suggesting it, so I will too)
1. Go into System Settings
2. SULP Setting -> SLP Server Setting
create new:
Nokia (slp address: supl.nokia.com, port: 7275, no cert and no TLS setting)
If it still doesn't work, try other variants (LGE SUPL, Spirent, etc).
Thanks everyone!
It works now! The. GPS is quite sensitive!

In the gps test in the hidden menu, there's not such option as gps fix.
Me too, I'm interested in using my gps without the assistance of the network cells. I've already tried the three supl servers and it doesn't seems to work for me. So, if someone knows how to use it without network assistance I'll be really grateful.
Thanks in advance.
It should work out of the box.. afaik, you don't need to mess with the SLP servers unless you are using some sort of assisted GPS mode (with wifi or 3g connection). I'm using it straight out of the box (after installing the fresh firmware) and it works normal in the car (1-2 minutes first fix, a couple of seconds for any other subsequent fix). Getting a first fix while on foot does take a bit longer, but that's true with all the other non-android devices I've had. the OB has normal (no more, no less) sensitivity when it comes to GPS.
i think there it`s a problem in OB mine has problems with gps too , and already o try`d all kind of apps and even use the gps standalone from the fresh new update soft and nothing , fix the gps for the first time and after then i can`t travel with standalone gps

Discovered Real BT Tether No Spoofing etc.. Required

i have a Verizon Note 3 Stock/Root Rom and Gear with NULL Rom but no Nova launcher. i install NULL for the extra features but like the stock look and feel. this should work with NULL installed period regardless of your setup.
i have used Network Spooker, PdaNet, etc etc etc trying all scenarios trying to get the best results with the least amount of work to set it up and having to reconnect etc...
i am posting this just 10 minutes into my testing and so far so good.
here is what i did and with others help perhaps we can figure out if this is the best way and how it may or may not work with Gear Connection Bridge etc...
1. on Gear i put it in airplane mode
2. on N3 i turned off wifi and BT
3. on N3 i went into settings > Wireless and Network > More Settings > Tethering > tick BT Tethering
4. on Gear leaving it in airplane mode i just turned on BT and connect to N3
5. on Gear Settings > Bluetooth > tap the settings icon next to your phone device name > scroll down and tick Internet Access
7. on Phone you should see in Taskbar "Tethering Active"
8. on Gear open Browser or whatever to test
6. DONE
i have no other items running like Spoofer etc.. and everything seems to work perfectly. i now wonder for location how Gear Connection Bridge will wok?
also wonder what a day or 2 of testing battery will look like?
please let me know if this works for others
Looks great

well at least for me on Verizon (not sure what carriers matter) i could only get internet access with Xposed Network Spoofer set to "Wifi" then PdaNet+ running on N3 and then PdaNet Tablet running on Gear and it was a lot of steps to get them all going. it did not work "out of the box" for me on Verizon as you were thinking.
if tethering wasnt an issue for you this will mean nothing but to me it was HUGE and very excited to figure it out.
lets see if others agree that may look at this and maybe im just nuts and this post was pointless
Some phones need wifi connection off before you can use Bluetooth tether, but other than that if you have the option on your phone to do Bluetooth tethering, then the profile will appear whenever your watch is connected

well i would never get the profile to appear and when i simply selected BT Tether in phone settings it would just turn itself back off again shortly. it wasnt until i set Gear in Airplane mode and with BT on phone off and then selecting Tether on phone that the option ever worked. trust me i had hours testing this in every way posted here
anyway it works for me now and so maybe others will benefit if they were having issues like i had.
I used Tasker with BT auto connect on the gear. When the gear connects to the note 3 blue tooth with is automatic Tasker will signal BT auto connect. Now I have sprint so I used BT auto tether on my note 3. So in other words I can reboot either device and it will automatically tether the gear. I can turn blue tooth of as well then back on same result if you are running Tasker on the note 3 also. The only issue I have is if I turn tether off on the note 3 from the settings then back on. I would have to re-enable it manually on both. But I think there maybe a way to have Tasker on the note 3 send a blue tooth packet to the gear that Tasker there can see and respond to. Any thoughts or suggestions?
