[Q] What needs to be done before I upgrade to FroYo? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
Please forgive me if I am asking a question that has been asked and answered many times before but I have searched and I can only find bits and pieces of the info I need.
My question is (as a bit of a noob)... What steps must I take to ensure a good backup of my SGS before I flash from Eclair to FroYo?
I am on stock JH2 here in Canada. I am rooted and have downloaded Titanium Backup (free version) but I have not done anything with it yet as far as backing up my apps, etc is concerned.
The reason I ask this is that I have read in one thread or another that you should backup your phone with Titanium (if rooted) but I am lost at how it works from there. The same thread also advised that once you upgrade to froyo and you restore your apps that you should NOT restore any system data as it may conflict with the new update so... How do you restore apps without restoring the system info?
Also... I am looking to update through Kies using the Registry Patcher tool so... Should I backup the device, do a factory reset and THEN upgrade? Should I also then factory reset again AFTER the update is complete?
So sorry for all the questions but if you are feeling helpful then I would much appreciate your advice and help on this.
Thanks in advance...

[Q] Must i uninstall the oneclick lag before the official 2.2 update

Hello there must i uninstall the oneclick lagfix before i do the official 2.2 update?
Or can i update with it installed?
And can it be done without kies because i cant get that to work.
Best regards
+1
I would like to know this too - before the official is out, so I can get it when it's hot.
Also: is unrooting necessary before updating? I really like the added functionality from my rooted device, can I keep that?
I'm also interested in a definitive answer to this.
Also on a somewhat related note, will a batch titanium backup be enough to restore my apps, settings, etc. to pretty much exactly how they were before updating?

Well... isn't the firmware the only thing that changes?
Or will all the apps be deleted? (If not, why do you care about backups?)

Fairly certain that Kies updates wipe everything on the phone - equivalent to a factory reset.
May be wrong however
It seems you are right - damn.
"Another thing should be noticed is you must back up all important data before updating your phone, or you will lose all data."
all-samsungphones.com/lastest-official-firmware-update-for-samsung-galaxy-s-i9000
So... what to backup. All apps... will SMS messages be lost too? How about GPS settings, or stuff thats stored on the internal SD card?
Titanium Backup is godsent for factory resets. Yes it restores everything but Its advisiable to just restore the apps you installed and not the system settings.
Screwed up a few of my factory resets.
As for contacts, back them up on Google and for SMS you can use SMS Backup+ (note the +) which can backup your sms on gmail automatically and restore them! its so awesome
and no it wont touch your internal sd. Titanium backup files are stored there though
Thanks for the reply... however, SMSBackup+ doesn't work for me (keeps crashing), first app to do that to me, EVER.
Anyway, could anyone tell us about the root and lag fix needing to be removed or not?

it shouldnt be necessary but its advisable to remove OCLF,
for voodoo, its a must.
Its sad that SMSbackup doesnt work on you, there's alternatives out there but i prefer SMSbackup+ since it uses your gmail account which means its on the cloud
im not sure of the other alternatives but I certainly saw a few that saved to your SD card and can restore from there, im not sure how well they work though
Well, in that case, I'll leave it be for now (lagfix and root) seeing as Voodoo isn't yet released for Froyo:
"What about Froyo?
Current Froyo builds are leaked development firmwares, not meant to be released.
Of course Froyo is the future for Galaxy S and as soon as Samsung will release a stable firmware and the corresponding sources, Voodoo improvements will be ported to it."
Once that happens; bye bye OCLF.
lagfix
so we can update to 2.2 with the lagfix installed?
Yes I want o know this as well, I have OCLF 2.2+ do I need to UNROOT my sgs AND "undo OCLF" AND "remove ext2 tools" ? All of them or just one ?
Can someone please answer this

YES, UNINSTALL ONLY THE LAGFIX (means restore EXT2 and uninstall the lagfix!)
NO NEEDS TO UNROOT! since the new kernel will be overwrite and you will have anyway an unrooted kernel again!
DONT FORGET TO WIPE ALL and hard reset...is the best safe way to a successfull flash! make a backup maybe titanium backup ... is a good way for the appz and dont forget to backup your contacts
then u can restore all!
I never had problems doing it in this way!
I went to the voodoo irc channel and the people said it was unnecessary to uninstall the voodoo lagfix before the firmware update. What IS NECESSARY is that you 'DISABLE LAGFIX' before doing the update.
lagfix
But i have the one click lagfix installed

[Q] BELL i9000m users: is the Froyo 2.2 update ready yet ?

Does anyone have any info regarding the froyo update for Bell Canada users ?
is it avail yet? via kies?
I haven't rooted or lag fixed - strictly stock here.
Whats the best way to back up all my apps -- can Titanium pro do this ?
Titanium Backup is one of the best IMO. But you'll need root acces to run it. If you want to know why! Because Titanium also back up your paid apps and system apps. Be carefull about system apps as you really don't want to restore them on a different firmware than the one they've been back up from. So make sure you only restore apps you really installed yourself. When you will be ready to restore your apps on froyo just go trough the list and make sure you uncheck any apps you don't know about cause it could cause you problem to restore gtalk from eclair on froyo (exemple). Once you start the restore process on Titanium Backup you won't be prompted for your approval for every application by android as you would be if using another program to restore them. TB will install all of them on his own and even restore their market link. Once complete just restart the phone and open the market to see all you installed apps again and be informed about available update.
This is really the best available program to back up and restore apps but you need a rooted phone. Don't worry about warranty you can always unroot a phone after your procedure.
Regarding the availability of froyo update just do a little research and you'll find an approximate date cause it's not there (officially) for now but should be soon.

Thanks alot buddy. I just downloaded the Z4 Root app. Does this work with i9000m ? can anyone confirm ?
If so I'm gonna root my phone this aft. and back up my stuff!
When updating, i hear the best thing to do is a factory reset after update.
Once I boot back into the phone with Froyo, do I install Titanium Back up ? then open the app and hit "restore" ? I'm assuming it would look on my SD card for my "old" back up of apps ? I can only assume it doesn't back up stuff to a cloud/server.
Also, is this internal SD it backs up to or external SD
There was the first week of December floating around, and now I don't even know anymore.
Seems everybody has it now except us...
Yeah a good number of us I9000M users have updated to an unofficial bell ROM leaked a week or so back.
If you want the official rom, the last I heard was mid December.
If you do the unofficial route do some reading before hand before you decide. Many I9000M users have had corrupt internal SD cards, which result in a trip to a bell store for service.
You have been warned !

[Q] Backup phone(before root) 2.3.4

Anyone that know a backup app/program that can backup all my data so that I can root my N1 2.3.4?
Not really up to the whole factory reset and do all customizing again... :/
I can backup my SD easy with USB cable but the internal memory is a different story.
Thanks
Maybe downgrade?
Hello XDA-Community!
I got the same problem as TheWierd - I am running stock 2.3.4 on N1 with no root and locked bootloader. I would like to change to a custom rom to have more fun (and mainly because i am running out of internal memory, so a forced move2SD would be cool). But i dont want to lose some app data like savegames, settings etc.
Is there a way to have a good backup before flashing the new rom? so getting root without unlocking the bootloader and therefore wiping the whole device? (e.g. is it possible to downgrade to 2.3.3 and use gingerbreak oder superoneclick?)
Thanks for any help!
PS: I don't want to hijack your thread, TheWierd, just wanted to state, that you're not the only one how's got that problem

No problem mate, would think that more got this problem but no real info about it.
Find Sh**loads of threads with the answer "Titan Backup" etc. replies...
Like they don't know that you need root to do that...
Hehe - ya, it's like an infinite loop - you want to root your phone, but in order to root it, you must unlock and therefore wipe it, before you can wipe it you want to backup the data, in order to backup you need to root your phone, ... etc.
I hope anyone can help here
MyBackup Pro is about as good as you are going to get. You can add a few SMS backup apps and stuff also, but you can't backup everything without root...
Hi again folks!
thanks for the info, danger-rat - I thought as much!
So i just did it yesterday. Flashed CM7 and I'm very happy with it! Ya, I lost some savegames (Stupid Zombies, Alchemy, etc.) but I also could backup some other data and settings.
It was really easy to flash it. Well, so I'm out here!
Kind regards and thanks

[Q] Reflashing, Modem, Nandroid backup, etc

so i have this question. I have a Galaxy Tab bought in the philippines. when i bought the tab it was already able to take in any carrier here in our country, i dont know if it was correct to say that it was already jail broken. (able to handle any carrier's sim) Im still new to the android world and tried upgrading my tab already.
as of today, I am now using the MODACO rom for the galaxy tab. only issue though the 3g is not working anymore after upgrading (or maybe downgrading) from the stock rom. before i upgraded my tab, The gps is working, 3g working, gallery working, camera working, practically everything is working smoothly without noticeable lags. then now, after upgrading to modaco, the gallery is not working, gps still working, 3g not working, camera working, now experiencing some lags when multiple applications are running like, music + browser and causes me to force close. At start up, i noticed a pixelated flash resembling the recovery menu but it was only like a 1/2 a second flash and would start normally but sorry im a perfectionist, I don't like little things bothering me but if all else fail, I just stick to what I have and bare with it.
browsing the forums i saw that CM7 (cyanogen mod 7, correct me if im wrong) is better than modaco but with camera feature being down, I wouldn't like my camera to be disabled especially when my cousins like to take ALOT of pictures of themselves and other people coz they're vain little buggers. so, which ROM/OS/MOD is the best of the best out there.
I'm thinking of returning my Gtab to the store where i bought it and claim my act of god insurance just to replace my gtab and stay using official everything just for the sake of undoing my "mistake" of upgrading to a Custom Rom even though im still very very veeryy noob at the android world.
FOR CLARIFICATION:
How do you flash/reflash?
What is Flashing? (and i dont mean the naughty kind)
What is a ROM?
What is a MODEM? How to know your MODEM version?
How to know your PDA and CSC?
What are PDA and CSC?
What is a KERNEL?
What is a BASEBAND?
What is a NANDROID BACKUP? Is it different from a Titanium Backup /w root?
What is the most updated custom rom as of today?
Your opinion, What custom rom are you using and think that its best for you.
What custom rom is best used just for occasional use?
What custom rom is best used for heavy using? i.e. Texting, Web Browsing, MP3, Video recording, Camera, Gaming, Office Editing(word, excel, ppts.)?
Thanks to those who would answer my noob questions
anybody ? any answers ?
I'm guessing you've done some research... Forum rule #1: Search before posting. Also, you are missing one important question, rooting. Unless you already know this. Anyhow..

What is/How do youFlashing? - Flashing is basically replacing a phone's Kernel/ROM/OS. (see above links)
What is a ROM? - Read only Memory: operating system (OS) and all the drivers and software that comes with the phone.
What is a MODEM? How to know your MODEM version?

*#*#1111#*#* FTA SW Version
*#*#2222#*#* FTA HW Version
*#*#44336#*#* PDA, Phone, CSC, Build Time, Changelist number
What is a NANDROID BACKUP? - used to backup ROM
Is it different from a Titanium Backup /w root? - used to backup system and user-installed apps.
Rooting - gives you "administrative privelege" on your tab. It gives you the ability to open all folders, hidden and system, delete any file, render your tab useless , as well as install many apps that really rock!
What is the most updated custom rom as of today? Depends. The purpose of ROM customization is to have a phone that works the way you want it to, and not the way the vendors (e.g. samsung) do.
Your opinion, What custom rom are you using and think that its best for you.
Overcome (see above). Also, gingerbread will be out shortly, which means, if you want to try the latest official GB on your tab, you have to re-flash the stock (orig) rom.
What custom rom is best used just for occasional use? stock! Overcome! This really depends on your personal preference.
What custom rom is best used for heavy using? i.e. Texting, Web Browsing, MP3, Video recording, Camera, Gaming, Office Editing(word, excel, ppts.)?
Same as above.
Thanks to those who would answer my noob questions.
It took me a good 10 minutes to answer these.. Please click the thanks button as many times as you can. After all, you had a LOT of questions.. See my other posts and thank them too!
well, i just wanted a quick answer or just a database or a list of what i can search about lol, searching through heavy content could be a hassle when you see lots of results but not the ones you wanted. so yea. hehehe.. i pressed the thanks button. thanks for answering my questions XD
btw, if you back up before editing your tab on kies and try to restore it from kies also, will it revert back to your original ROM when you do it. just want to know, also, will it remove the root after doing so ?
also, you didn't answer the NANDROID BACKUP and TITANIUM BACKUP correctly, I mean please elaborate more on this.
how are they different from each other. XD sorry for being so naggy about this, lol. needed some intelligent answers from people sculpted to my needs. lol!
btw, if you back up before editing your tab on kies and try to restore it from kies also, will it revert back to your original ROM when you do it.
Kies will only back up content such as contacts, images, and videos.. and of course can only restore the same. There is no way of using kies to backup or modify roms. To backup roms, you use nandroid. Search tha market for ROM manager for that. Kies cannot backup applications as well. That's where you use Titanium. One more thing Titanium does is removing vendor installed apps that you don't use (bloatware).
just want to know, also, will it remove the root after doing so ?
Rooting will not affect backup in kies. similarly, restoring contacts, pics and videos will not remove root. HOWEVER, it is reported that some rooted device will not upgrade its firmware in kies. This is a different thing from kies backup.
Again:
Kies is for contacts and pics/vids back up. It is also for official phone updates.
Nandroid backup is for ROMs.
Titanium backup is for system and user applications.
XD sorry for being so naggy about this, lol. needed some intelligent answers from people sculpted to my needs. lol!
Don't be sorry, I don't know anyone who wasn't a noob at one time, including myself. Thanks button is always appreciated!
Clockworkmod
Read this one pre.. but make sure your tab is rooted. Use Superoneclick. I gave you the link to this in the first reply.
This is CWM for flashing ROMS and doing Nandroid back ups. This is one of the easiest guides out there.
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...-and-how-to-use-it-on-android-complete-guide/
Hit thanks if I helped!
Wow. Thanks dude. Now i have a one stop referrence easily found via bookmarking. Hahaha. Now, i just have to find a micro sd card large enough for backung up via nandroid. Just found out today that nandroid is actually just clockworkmod and choosing the backup from the backup and restore menu. Thought that it was a completely different app. Hehehe

[Q] Rooting & Unrooting question

Hi guys, i've seen that custom roms are in an early state of developement so i'm thinking of rooting my OB just to remove some useless default applications. Now the questions:
If an official update is released by LG (gingerbread hopefully), do i have to unroot the phone before i upgrade it by pc-suite?
if yes, how could i unroot the phone?
Thank you so much!
It was answered many times.

I have a noob question guys. I root my phone and delete some default apps like Car Home, News, Finance. Now Car Home, News etc is deleted it is possible to UNROOT my phone? Do you think if i UNROOT my phone it can cause a problem/bug? I try to restore some of my default apps using titanium backup but after 30 mins of waiting nothing happens. Still i can't restore it.
of course you can't restore stock apps if you have deleted sources apk without backups. So you must find stock apps, copy them to /system/app (root needed) then installing them

I do backup before i delete the apps using titanium backup, But the problem is when i try to restore the stock/default apps after 30 mins nothing happens. I check my sd card in titanium folder and the backup is still there. I also try to delete some apps that can be found in the market like angrybird etc then i try to restore it and it works! So I'm just wondering, when it comes to stock/default apps why l can't restore them even though i have a backup.

you may haven't write permission. Are you fully rooted ?
The original question from gabrieles84 is still valid in my opinion. As radkor indicated I searched the forum, but there are many methods and can't find a conclusive answer.
I was wondering the same thing. There are a number of methods of upgrading the firmware. Which is safe with a rooted phone?
1. FOTA (from settings menu): in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204903&highlight=unroot+before+upgrade) it is indicated the root was the cause of the bricking. So it is safe to update this way with a rooted phone? Or is this dependant on the firmware and recovery? (my firmware is V10A no CWM)
2. LGMobileupdater (B2C). Is this safe with rooted phone? In my case it tells me there is a new firmware, but I'm not sure if it is safe to upgrade since I rooted with SOC 1.95, unrooting is not that simple in that case.
This will not work in this case, factory reset does not unroot, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16519995&postcount=19
3. KDZ. This post indicates it is not nessecary to unroot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16522163&postcount=23
(I'm not mentioning the R&D Test Tool in this list, since that is only needed in case of a brick right?)
Thanks in advance!
1. FOTA - isn't safe with root - I bricked my phone with that
2. Safe
3. Safe
R&D Test Tool method is the same that KDZU but with a final factory reset.
Then, it's the way to flash devices that doesn't run well after reflash because of data inside the phone in conflict with new flash.
But, IMHO, I¡ll recommend ALLWAYS use R&D Test Tool method instead KDZU because IT'S THE SAME but additionally makes a hard reset, that is what usually we have to make after a KDZU reflash.
Regards.
Just to confirm: yesterday evening I updated my phone with LGUpdater (B2C) from V10A to V10E without removing root. No problems and now running newest fw.
Thanks guys!
