[Q] Plz help with getting froyo on my Galaxy S Vibrant - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone. Great site, I'm new here. I got a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant I9000M from bell a couple of weeks ago. I was wondering how to get Froyo on it. I have never mod a phone before, but I have experience modding consoles. My battery on the phone seems to drain very fast even when not using it. I can only get about 1/2 a day on a charge. I'm hoping froyo could fix that.
At this point, should I wait for the official Samsung/Bell release in about 2 weeks? Or should I just go ahead and do it now? I'm worried the bell update will be full of bugs...
I have tried to see if I could get my phone in recovery mode and it worked, by holding Volume up, the home key and Power buttons. Is this the same as the download mode? I don't know where to go from here... witch Rom to use, where to get it and how to get it on my phone.
I also don't know how to backup all my apps/etc. I have kies working but dont see options to backup apps. Should I do a factory reset before starting anything? What is ODIN and is it safe?
Sorry if this as all been asked a million times in the past. I'm just looking at getting the most up to date info to get Froyo on my phone with the less hassle possible. I would appreciate direct help or some links to tutorials. I have looked through the forum, but have a hard time to find what I'm specifically looking for.
Thank you all in advance for your help and time.

Galaxy S problem out of the blue

Hi guys,
I'd really appreciate any help as I'm rather dependant on my phone right now.
I bought an unlocked galaxy S in Holland. I've been in the UK using my phone for the last 3 weeks without any problems. My phone is running 2.1 update 1. The only modifications I did was a lagfix and root. Since doing those, I've used it for 2 weeks without problems.
Today I finally got my UK sim only card so I swapped out my SIM. It worked fine for a few hours, until I tried to input the internet settings for my UK provider. The phone kept rebooting every few seconds, so I removed the battery and tried to power on.
Since then, the phone will boot up with the galaxy S animation, but it will stall there with the lights flashing (normal boot up sequence). Even after a few minutes it is still like that, and eventually the screen turns off and only the touch sensitive buttons light up.
I have tried to do a volume down+home+power and it puts the phone in a downloading screen which leads to nothing.
I can't seem to be able to hard reset. Worst of all is that I can't return it to the shop for replacement since it was from an internet shop in Holland and I now live in the UK.
Is there anything I can still try?
thanks a lot. it would be a disastruous 450 euro paperweight if I cannot solve this
My phone did that few times, I just flashed rom back on with odin. Lots of tutorials around

I am having trouble locating the original eclair rom on the internet, especially because the samsung-firmwares site seems to be down/private. Do you still have a copy or link?
I have also read that people with stuck bootscreens shouldn't flash.. somewhat conflicting stories.
Any help is greatly appreciated..
Just go in recovery volume up+home+power, after the screen turns on take your finger of the power button. Once there do a wipe-factory reset.

Thanks for the tips guys. I tried the volume/home/power thing and this time it did work (had tried it several times already).
did the reset and the phone booted up afterwards. I have internet connectivity via my 3g and also via a wifi spot however it tells me it cannot establish a reliable data connection to server when i try to add my gmail account.
I've tried both over wifi and 3g. I'm now trying a reset of the phone via the menu in android.
also I noticed there is some XEN error. Not exactly sure what that is.
edit: the reset via the menu fixed the Gmail sign in problem.
Is android just really this unstable? I've always only used the default firmware so I have no idea why suddenly all these things started happening. It's pretty troubling really.. especially since i've just lost a lot of contacts.
I don't think android is unstable, but rather Samsung not taking the time to tune the Os for the SGS as it has some rather annoying bugs. Just last night I had to factory format my phone. It seems I need to do it every damn 3 weeks. The first 3 times didn't bother me too much but not this is getting out of hand. I will never buy another Samsung device as long as I live. Right now I'm downloading JM9 rom to install on this thing. Freaking annoying
well, if devices with pretty standard hardware require fixes or hacks to make things work properly... then its unstable in my mind.
I really hope I won't have to do it again--- a phone should just work, it shouldn't be like a damn desktop OS in that sense.
I'm also still wondering what the deal is with the official froyo version. I still hven't seen it appear properly and it won't show up in Kies either. GPS is extremely bugged atm.
Galaxy S doesnt have standard hardware.
Its samsung screwing up the software

[Q] Galaxy S not booting, black screen!

Firstly, may I apologise, I know this has been covered, I've trawled the internet for hours but just can't seem to get an answer.
I recently updated my UK, unlocked Galaxy S to Froyo via the registry hack, all was fine (ish). Because Froyo had been delayed in the UK and wasn't as great when it was running on my phone I thought it would be safer to revert back to 2.1 and wait until the official UK release came out (I know some will ask me why I did this, I just felt that Froyo was held back for a reason and I couldnt get an answer as to if I could update to the UK version if I already had the Scandinavian one). So I did the reg hack again and was offered 2.1. Everything seemed to go smoothly until the phone rebooted after downloading from Kies. Now the phone's animation starts then the flashing S symbol displays for an extended time. After that, the screen goes black. If I touch the two touchscreen buttons they stay on but do not go off. If I hold the power button the phone turns itself off and when the phone is powered off and I plug it into my PC with a USB, the battery charging sign comes on.
The phone was rooted and I did have the OCLF on but uninstalled that and un-rooted before changing the firmware so it was back to stock.
Before I get 20 people telling me to put the phone in download/recovery mode I must tell you that I can't. My phone has never been able to do it. I've tried every single way and button order suggested. I'm not the only one who's phone won't do it either so it's not just me. The only way I ever saw recovery mode on my phone was when I used the one click root on the PC.
I'm at a total loss. Debugging was turned off because Kies won't let you do anything with it turned on and so ADB recovery is out also.
Please help if you can.
Many thanks,
Ryan
Boot to download mode, do a repartition with Odin and 512 pit flash, remove battery and boot again to download mode and then do a odin firmware flash to which ever firmware you want.
thanks intratech but I can't boot the phone into recovery or download mode (sorry should have stated that). Believe me, I have tried every combination. I did a lot of research and discovered that there are quite a few people for whom that feature was disabled.
if the 3 button combo is not working on your phone, you should not do these risky stuff actually
take a look at this thing

thanks Noobproof. I remember coming across that thread last night. Although I consider myself ok with software, soldering and slicing just isn't my forte. I haven't got a clue about soldering, etc. I've just come back from the Carphone Warehouse (Samsung suggested I go there as they are the service centres listed on the Samsung UK website). The engineer had the phone for half hour and said that the "board was faulty". Haven't got a clue what he meant by that, unless he meant the internal SD which a few people have had go on them. Anywho, he told me to ring Samsung and send it in for a repair. I did that and need to send my phone special delivery to a company called regenersis in Scotland.
I knew rooting and flashing custom roms was a risk, that's why I never touched Odin, etc. I used Kies to upgrade to Froyo and Kies to downgrade back to Eclair. You would think that sticking to official Samsung software would be safe. I must admit, when it was going well I loved my Galaxy but more and more I'm starting to wish I'd opted for the Iphone. It just seems that there have been so many glitches and bugs, I mean, why should there ever be a need for lag fix in the first place? I often found myself keeping my fingers crossed when downloading simple apps as that was usually touch and go!
Feeling a bit deflated now. Was hoping some clever boffin had designed a software solution that would recognise the phone and force it into download/recovery mode.
Ah well, thanks for taking the time to respond anyway.
Best wishes,
Ryan
You know i was very happy when i for the phone for the first time and while i was doing a research (i live in turkey and there is no stock android market here) i came along this forum. And i have learned that i havent got the 3 button combo. I downloaded the 3 button fix abd took the phone to samsung centre.
They told me that they cannot flash it and i made a huge fight then they accepted and i have my 3 buttons. Never give up your phone. I dont think the internal sd is faulty it is just corruppted if you can access the recovery menu you could fix it. Any way you have to find a service centre that has an anyway jig box other a jtag box otherwise they will have to replace the motherboard. Good luck

[Q] Captivate Not Booting

Hello,
I have been keeping up on these forums for awhile now and have learned it should be hard to brick the Captivate, well that's what i fear may have happened.
I hope you guys have ideas on how i can fix this, What happened is.
I followed the info from this tread here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734871
I was flashing the I9000 rom to my Captivate, i have done a few roms before with out problems.
This time i flashed the rom from the US section and flowed the instructions on the I9000 rom and Odin3 did a reset to reboot the phone and that's the last time i seen anything on the screen.
So i thought it would be best to let it keep going and didn't touch anything, then Odin3 gave me the Green light and said passed but the screen was still black.
So i unhooked Odin3 and pulled the battery thinking maybe i just needed to reboot it, but nothing came back.
I have tried to put it back into download mode but have not been able to, its acting kind of like its not turning on now.
I have tried holding down volume up and down and inserting the usb cable after i put the battery back in but that does not work any more.
I have read that the volume buttons on the I9000 roms are backwards so i thought maybe that might be the problem but am out of ideas.
I hope you guys have some ideas, ill own any one a beer for help on this.

Not long enough to know this belongs in Q&A, apparently.
Yea sorry about that i was reading in that section didn't notice until after i posted.
So is it possible that the bootloader got jacked since i see nothing on the screen?
I have to question why you used a thread that was posted in July...
If you can't get into Download mode using any of the button combos, you'll need to make a Jig.
If that doesn't work, you're **** out of luck.
Jig? 10 char
Well the date of the thread does not seem to matter, but a Jig would only seem to work if i had a boot screen and just had flashed a crippled loader.
But looking into this further i found that the fing bootloader was packaged into the I9000 rom, now since that seems to be what i flashed i can see why that killed it.
I wish i would have known this before hand but i guess lesson learned unless some one thinks that should not matter.
I will have to send it back but i should be ok on that with ATT, but i will stay away from letting the Slb.bin stay in the flash next time.

[Q] Black screen, phone unresponsive

Hi,
I have a I9000 on TMobile in the UK. Not rooted, just been upgraded to ICS with the official firmware.
Ever since then I've been randomly getting a black screen - i.e. phone doesn't respond to any of the buttons to turn the screen on. Only way to get the phone to work again is a battery pull. Haven't installed any apps from prior to ICS, and prior to ICS I didn't have this problem.
I'm guessing no one's going to have a simple answer to this (although it would be great if anyone does, I've searched and haven't found anything) - but any tips on trying to identify what the cause is? Could it be a bad app maybe?
I tried logcat but didn't really understand it (!) and I wasn't sure if it would record what happened before a battery pull anyway.
Any tips to help get the bottom of this would be much appreciated
Many thanks
Andrew

[Q] Cannot get phone to boot

Hi guys,
I recently used rom manager and flashed the wrong clock work mod to my phone, more or less trying to get cm7/9 on my galaxy s captivate, now my phone does not get past the 'Samsung SGH I896' Screen, hard reset does nothing, tried all the key combinations, I work in technical support for all types of phones, and yet I don't know what really can be done with this. I suppose I may be sol. Any input would be appriciated thanks guys.
Try to get your phone into download mode by:
Breathe
Taking out battery
Plug phone into computer
Hold down vol+ and vol-
Insert battery
If it goes into download mode then flash back to stock and stop using Rom Manager. It has nothing for our phones. You can find one-clicks back to stock in this thread
If you can't get it into Download mode that way, you'll want to build/buy a jig.
Thanks for the input, Ill try that out.
If you can't get into download mode, buy yourself a jig to force download mode. works like a charm and they're only about 5 usd
Well then, I've got it into download mode now im just like durr, I have no idea how to get the software on there through kies, I watched that video and im not afraid to admit im a noob at this stuff, my carrier is rogers in canada how do I get the software back on this phone. The one click's aforementioned are for american i897's and I don't think they'd have the proper carrier settings on them.
Excellent, after perving the forums a bit I found a one click fix for the phone and now its fired up and alive again thanks guys <3
You're in luck my beaver-lovin friend.
Another Canuck on the board made some One-clicks to fix problems like yours.

Yeah I noticed those, I work for Rogers WCTS at there corporate centre so these experiences are definitely beneficial. Atleast now I know how to force this phone into download mode, I bet ill save a 100 phones at my job doing stuff like this now xD
C9
Well. You could also try using Odin to flash it? Have you looked into that?
