Does anyone know why this happens? Whenever I turn USB debugging on, my comp cannot recognize the device...whenever it is off, 2 drives show up which is exactly as I intend to happen. However when it is off, nothing happens. Anyone have a solution to this?
Mine did that also not sure what the deal was, I ended up removing all drivers in windows and reloading them - didnt fix. then I put a new kernel on my phone being one was there to update from what I had in it started working again. The drives would show up in both debugging and non-debugging mode but I could not access them. I can only assume this was the phone causing the problem. I suggest starting with drivers and checking all phone settings before any further actions.
Mount the drives for mass storage. Post in Q/A next time.

Hey guys,
For some reason, I can't mount USB unless I'm in debugging mode.
I plug the cable into my phone. The phone will bleep. I'll see the little USB logo and in the pulldown, under ONGOING, I can see it there, but usually there is two lines of text, but I only see one. When I click on it to be presented with the mount option, I hear the bleep when I click it, but nothing comes up.
Or maybe my PC isn't recognizing it unless in debugging mode? I have all the drivers installed. I'm positive I do, because it was the only way to get the super one click root. I've never had problems mounting.
On a side note, maybe it is relevant, my wifi connectivity has gotten really bad the last few days. My connection has stayed the same, and I've check all the usual PC settings, power cycle, etc. I can't check my Twitter, I can't send emails with attachments. Uninstalling and reinstalling the Samsung drivers didn't work. When in debugging mode, and I plug in, I did notice in the device manager, there would be something "ADB" popup. That's what's not showing itself in non debugging mode.
I'm not sure what I could have done. Any ideas? Thanks!
Go in to settings, usb settings and choose mass storage, if it's set to ask on connection it sometimes doesn't bring up the mount option in the notification bar, you'd think it would mount auto magically but it doesn't.
Edit; sorry didn't read the whole post, sounds like a driver issue..

I figured that much. The combination of things I've attempted so far regarding the drivers has not been successful.
Mounting USB on Rogers
Hey there I've noticed the same problem until I actually pulled down the top menu bar at the top where the USB symbol is. You pull that down and look for the USB settings icon tap that and choose MOUNT and or UNMOUNT.
Hope this helps....I only noticed this on Eclair 2.1 and not on Froyo where it actually brings up a dialogue box.
Just a word of advise, when you unlcok it with the unlock software from here beware you might end up with a generic or false IMEI number as I did.
I get the drop down, and I see the USB option, but clicking on it does nothing. The PC won't recognize it.
For those who are having this issue, the only way I've manage to fix this is:
1. Uninstall Samsung drivers and delete extras manually.
2. Restart PC.
3. Reinstall driver.
4. Restart PC.
5. Plug in device and give it a few minutes.
I'm on Windows 7 64bit. I've had to do this twice so far, and it worked both times. Hope it helps.
I had this problem also and after looking around I found several people that suggest switching to a USB port right off the mobo. After doing this it connects every time.
hey guys.. my friend bricked his phone so im here trying to help him. i used a jig and was able to get the phone into download mode, but when i plug it into my pc, it doesnt get detected by odin. the drivers are installed on the computer, because when i try plugging mine in, it detects it. i am not sure what exactly hes done to brick it but any feedback would help. without using the jig, the device does not turn on at all, so i dont even get the phone!pc or whatever the error message is, or that the battery is being charged when plugged in. thanks
If you haven't already tried it, try plugging the USB cable into a different port (preferably one that's directly on the motherboard). If necessary, also reboot the computer, start Odin first, and then connect your friend's phone.
Also, if your friend's phone was on CyanogenMod, you may need to have the Nexus drivers installed for it to register properly.
after it didnt detect his phone, i plugged mine two seconds later into the same port, without unplugging the usb cord from it, and it detected mine.. so i cant see that fixing the problem, but thanks for the advice

I see what you mean. The only reason I suggest a different USB port is that sometimes the computer you're working with can be stupidly finicky (I know this from personal experience), and you can plug in the same phone 8 times in a row - the first 7 times, nothing, and on the 8th time, it connects. It's also possible that his phone will be willing to connect to a port that's on the right side of the computer instead of the left side (or whatever other trivial thing the motherboard decides it wants). As he isn't able to do anything on his phone right now, swapping USB ports isn't going to hurt anything, and may possibly give him the connection.
I mention the drivers thing because if your phone is on an i897/i9000 rom and his was a cm7 rom (or vice versa), the computer would detect whichever one it had drivers installed for, but not necessarily the other.
Good luck either way, though.
Have you tried heimdall?

Try reinstalling the drivers. It has worked for me every time odin doesn't want to detect my phone, especially in download mode.
Try cleaning the USB plug on the phone... I cleaned mine last night, with a monitor wipe (clorox wipe type style but w/o all the acidic chemicals) and my phone is finally being detected in Heimdall on my mac. (canned air was not enough)

This is one of the most pointed solution, is possible that your phone's usb port has been damaged on some pin with the jig
thanks guys.. i will get to trying your ideas right now.. let you know how it comes..

i did try it before.. but i think im going to try it again. last time if i remember, it said it worked, but it didnt fix it.
and as for other suggestions.. when i plug the phone in, i hear the sound that the phone is detected, that quick "duh duh" notification, so the usb connection must be fine.. hopefully heimdall might help
I am getting tired of going into the settings every time I want to mount my phone. Any other way to do this? If not, to Tasker I go...

yea, drag the notification bar down after plugging in the USB cable, and you can turn it on directly from there.

That option was never there when I would plug it in. This is what I always did on my old phone.
It only work if you ticked USB Debugging Mode in Setting/app.

No matter what I try, I can't seem to get USB debugging to turn off. I am using the stock ROM, rooted with SuperSU installed.
If I disable USB debugging and disable developer options, it turns itself back on anyway as soon as I plug the cable in. Do I need to start from scratch to fix this? Google found lots of other people with the same problem on different phones and no fix =/

Mine seems to be intermittent but I don't recall it happening after rebooting the phone. I also haven't bothered rooting yet, but I did have this issue when I first plugged into my computer. Try reboot?

MTP mode vs camera mode?
Does kies recognize it?
Also as strange as it sounds, you may toggle developer options and usb debugging on and off. I did this on a family members ASUS tablet that displayed the same issue and then the PC recognized it. I was just trying everything I could think of.
Edit: I just realized you said Odin and not just connecting as a normally powered on device. Do you have it in download mode when connecting to the PC with Odin running?

unfortunately i cannot get the phone to bootup as to get into the hidden menu and turn on the MTP that way and yes if i am trying to connect to the phone to use odin i am in download mode when i try to connect.. the phone does not want to connect to the computer no matter what i do ive finally managed to get it to download mode and now am going to try and flash a different custom rom in the hopes it will boot up.. if it will do that i ill try and get mobile odin.. but even that hasnt been working. when i install a new rom and click on reboot the phone just shuts off. the phone wont turn back on after that unless i leave the battery out for several minutes then put the battery back in and press the power button. upon doing that the phone instantly boots to recovery.
This happened to me.
I even replaced the USB Port (Then dropped the phone while it didn't have the frame on and cracked the LCD)
The phone's USB port still didn't work and I had to replace the phone.
it is a very, very odd bug with this phone that multiple people have been experiencing but no one knows the cause of it.
It may just be faulty phone. Several people recently have had this bug.
my phone was made in Korea, Region: USA-Revision Q8R2.

So. Sadly, the only way as of right now to fix this is to get a new phone.
I tried a lot of things with my phone before I broke it to attempt to fix the USB port.
And the issue also lead to slow charging (220mA) and when I plugged it into the wall it would say USB Charger not AC Connected
Are you using the oem cord that came with the phone. I've experienced issues using non oem cords.
Yes sir I've tried multiple OEM and non OEM cords still won't recognize the phone

Did you try ask the different USB outlets? Did you try a different computer? For me USB 2 works, but not 3. Also I've had trouble with those on the front of the case. I always use the ones on the back. Just throwing a few things out there. It's possible you have a bad USB port on the device.
