I'm a happy Nexus One user and I just bought my wife a T-Mobile G1 from ebay. I'll need to replace the digitizer and the (white) housing is pretty seriously scuffed up. I figured as long as I was taking it apart to change the glass, I might as well put a new housing on it. I'd like a standard HTC-branded one (as opposed to T-Mobile). My questions are these:
1. Can I put the guts from a US T-Mobile G1 (with the round buttons) into the housing of the G1/Dream with rectangular buttons?
2. Does anyone have experience with the non-OEM replacement housings such as this one?
Thanks!

You're probably fine with aftermarket. Not the most complicated of parts.
As for the round buttons... square holes problem.... that would depend on whether or not you can fit a square peg into a round hole. There are some other (minor) differences between the "square" and "round" ones, one of them is above the touchscreen, but I *THINK* it is just molded differently there.... should probably still fit. The button area definitely won't fit though....

Thanks for the reply. My thinking with the round/square buttons was that if the PCB is the same between the models, it should work as long as the new housing also includes the physical buttons. Typically, the buttons are just activating contacts on the PCB and as long as those contacts are in the same location, it doesn't much matter what is pressing them. I guess my question really is whether the boards are significantly different between the models, to the point that the differently-shaped buttons would not be able to activate the contacts.

Hi,
I've been looking at replacement housings for my PDA as it's a bit scratched and fancy getting a black one instead of grey.
I've spotted some good looking ones on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260078879244&fromMakeTrack=true
Anybody tried these?
If so, how are they?
Cheers,
Martin.
Just note: The 'case' mentioned is for Magician phones, i'm not sure if thats the same as that of Charmer.
i know they look the same so might be a good match?! only thing i know for sure though is that the front plate is made of metal on magicians and plastic on the charmer.

The Charmer and the Magician are having the same front panel, camera cover, and battery cover. BUT the middle black plastic housing that sit between the panels(as shown in the attached picture), is NOT the same(reset and microphone places exchanged):
Funnily enough, my TM MDA compact II has a metal front cover.
Same here, my Charmer has a (scratched) metal cover.
If I'm only changing the front and back panels and not the middle section do you think it's worth a shot?

yes it will fit. i made it myself.
Thanks for that, just ordered one now.
I'll post picks once it's fitted.
I'd also like to change the housing of my mda compact ii but Im not too sure whether I'd be able to do it.
Are there any step by step instructions available? and what are the possibilities of ruining all this.. Because everytime I open something im never able to put it back together properly
so anyone else replace their charmers casing? the only problem i found is with the battery cover doesnt quite slide up all the way, leaves a tiny gap. anyone know which part of the cover needs to trimming so it goes all the way up?
You need to trim the small clips at the bottom of the cover (near the headphone socket) as they're a fraction too long.
My touch screen stopped working on my phone, but the screen is still visible. I'm assuming it's the digitizer. I was wondering if anybody has done or tried replacing only the digitizer. Does this work, is it better just to replace both? Any suggestions? Thanks.
Save yourself the headache
Just replace the complete screen unit (lcd + digitizer).
The digitizer is held on the screen with some super strong adhesive that is nearly impossible to get off cleanly. Also, there are three (4?) thin ribbon tabs that have to be soldered to the board on the rear of the lcd. Unless you are really confident with a soldering iron, it is extremely hard to do.
I replaced my screen unit in about a half hour. Make sure you go to the wiki and find one of the excellent disassembly guides before you start.
Thanks
Thanks, that's exactly the information i needed to know. I found the fon logix video. Is it only a t6 tool i need, or do i also need a t5. I have seen conflicting info on this? Thanks again.
I got my scren unit from ebay, and it included a torx driver and a plastic case tool. I honestly can't remember what size came in the kit, because I used my own torx set. Im pretty sure its just the one size, though.
Good luck!
You might find this information interesting.

Disregard ............
i always replace only the touch screen. okay i've done it aprox 30 times. But i never broke one.
if you decide to replace only the touchscreen, there are 2 types. thus check which on you have, and i found out that sometimes reassamble, and cleaning can help.
good luck.
torx is 5 and 6, 6 for opening the back of the phone, 5 for the screen part removal of the body and opening it. you need an opening tool!!
adhesive
is there a terrible adhesive between the screen and digitizer, as the second poster mentioned? how difficult is it to deal with?
just cut away with snapoff knives. It wil break in more pieses. (the glas that is) just be carefull, and take your time
Thanks
Thanks for all of the info, i went ahead and purchased the screen with the digitizer and tools. One thing i have noticed though is the d-pad has stopped working also, i'm using a custom rom so i'm not sure if it's just that or it's something else. i will prob re-image after i replace screen.

Well, guess I was a smarty pants and bought my stuff before consulting XDA...as such, I ONLY bought the touchscreen rather than the entire new unit. Cheaper, yes, but I had no idea about the adhesive until just now. My only question is, once I remove the old screen from the LCD with a razor blade, how do I affix the new one?
Anyone?
i would love to know this too because i have to also replace my digitizer!

I used rtv gasket maker the transparent blue one worked well.
you can find it in automotive section. Actually any silcone will work.
also can use double sided tape but needs to be very thin
I've already changing my digitizer, but it doesn't seem to work. So I've change the whole part. cost me $20 more on ebay.
my advice is to change the whole package with the lcd too.
I have always preferred the look of the Euro HD2 with the all white keys as compared to the white/red/green keys on the T-MoUS. I saw on ebay you can buy the replacement keys the other day and am pondering changing my T-Mo keys for the Euro version.
Has anyone done this? Is it a huge process or somewhat simple if you are mechanically inclined? I am a machinist by trade, and know a thing or two about electronics repair as well, and always done my own repairs whether it be a DVD player that broke, or my cars. I just dont want to take my HD2 apart only to find out I have to also replace a circuit board or some kind of "snap together" crap because it inevitably breaks upon cracking open the phone...
Here is a link at the bottom that will be pretty self explainatory. In a word - DON'T ! If you are doing it just to change the color of the keys the risk of really messing up something when you open it and put it back together is pretty high. Nick or break one of those flexi cables and its all over - try to find a replacement part. The risk of over driving one of those screws and stripping the plastic threads is pretty high if you don't have a light touch. If your phone is still under warranty you break the liquid/tamper seal over one of those torx screws and it won't be unless you can find a replacement (they are available though some Chinese/Hong Kong sources).
I've done cable/screen/case replacements on my TYTN's and TILTs and stopped at a Fuze. The Tilts and TYTN's were a piece of cake - plenty of room within the case and the connectors were pretty sturdy. You have to be pretty careful not to manhandle anything keep a static loop on you wrist thats grounded to guard against static. Most of the newer phones that have laminated screens you have to heat them (Fuze) just to remove the screen/keyboards from the case. Fortunately the HD2 doesn't appear to have that problem. On Mike Channon's website he doesn't have the official HTC disassembly guide yet and I wouldn't do anything until thats posted. It will outline how to do everything and how to put it back together. The guide is pretty good but it doesn't show the key removal or a close up phone of how they are attached. With the HD2 I probably would touch mine (still under warranty/insurance) unless it was not covered and I had to replace a component that was necessary for the phone to function.

Thanks for the link! You make some good points though I have the skills necessary. After looking at the pics it seems pretty straight forward. Similar to other devices Ive taken apart. I can skip about half of it because Im not completely disassembling, just need access to the buttons. If I go for it I will post up the step by step as well, minus all the extra crap.

It just seems a big hassle just to change a few buttons, thats just my two cents. But if you really want those white buttons, knock yourself out man!
Hi y'all.
I am devestated. This morning my N1 hit cement. The glass is cracked in the bottom right corner and on the top left. It doesnt affect usability, but definitely affects me.
I was looking for replacement glass on ebay. There are glass/digitizers combo but they dont seem to be made by HTC. I have 3 questions
1) Do the glass/digitizers on ebay perform well?
2) Is it possible to swap in a used screen from a dead N1? DO i need the adhesive strips etc
3) DOes anyone have glass to sell?
thank you all. I am an adult man, and I am honestly really bumbed
Does anyone have any experience with this supplier?

Anyone actually done a glass swap? How was it?
no one? halp

1. Yes. I have purchased 7 for mytouch 4g from ebay and amazon with no issues (they work). I got 1 that had 0.15mm (I'm talkinreally small) bubble but it caused no issue and could only be seen by close inspection with the screen off
2. yes...from a dead N1 I would think it easier to swap the main board and avoid lcd/touchscreen removal from the frame...if you remove the lcd/touchscreen from the frame an adhesive (3m double stick tape is commonly used) will be needed.....place don't use glue...out makes a huge mesa and is entirely unneeded overkill
3. Ebay... Under thirty bucks....some local repair shops do this repair fir $20 + parts
Oh yeah. Glass swap is easy(but I do electronic product refurbishing fora living)..take your time as the cables and connectors can be delicate. You must also be careful not to get dust between touchscreen and lcd or fingerprints inside the touchscreen
Ok great. I have found some OEM ones on ebay and that seems like a good direction.
Is there a write-up anywhere of how to use the doublesided sticky tape so that the screen lays down into the frame perfectly?
Thanks for your reply!!

To apply tape I
1.remove old adhesive from frame
2.remove protective plastic from touchscreen (lcd side)
3.lay touchscreen on table finger side (the side that faces out) down
4.place strips of adhesive (double stick tape) onto touchscreen black border region (leave aprox 0.2mm gap from visable area)....do not cover flash, front cam or light sensor areas (if applicable)
5.place touchscreen with lcd side down
6.you can now user razor blade to trim excess along the the edge of touchscreen
I have never doe a n1...only mytouch4g and hd2 but I am sure it is practically the same
Dust is not much of am issue....you will probably introduce more dust trying to clean our blow out the dust....you can buy that antistatic air spray (this may be helpful but but needed if carful)
Also make sure you get the right one. There is the OLED and the LCD one...
You can see which you have from the back of yours (not sure if there is another way to find out) I bought the wrong one for mine so if you need the LCD one, drop me a line...
I just got a busted up HD7 and I ordered a new LCD and digitizer for it. The phone is in pretty good condition but the faux chrome around the screen is scratched up and I hate scratches. I want to buy a new mid frame or complete housing but the ones I see on ebay look a little differnt from the one I have. Some do not have the opening over the ear speaker on the mid frame and none of them come with the speaker mesh tape at the top and bottom of the digitizer (yes, it's just some cheap tape!)
My other concern is that I do not know how to remove the volume buttons. The replacements housings I see for sale do not have the buttons with it. I only found the button flex cable for sale, not the actual buttons. Just wondering if anyone else has done this.
Wow. 77 views, 0 replies. You guys are all software and no hardware
I did find a mid housing with the buttons already installed with the mesh for only $15! I'll post pics when I do this and do a tutorial of how to replace the digitizer.
there's an HD7 accessories reserved area for harwared minded people

When you take phone apart down to the LCD it becomes apparent how to get the buttons off. You have to use a pair of tweezers or a needle to pry them up and out. Do not grab them from the middle, grab only the edge.

Thanx for clarifying because I never did change the housing, so I never pulled that flex cable out.
